I'm really liking elec/ice. Chilling Aura works better than I expected with the sleep patch and -end toggle, not to mention the solid single target damage, which also works quite well with sleep. Early on, when you get stunned frequently, having to retoggle is annoying - but the closer I get to perma-dom the less annoying that gets .
  2. Yeah, the numbers look great. And this is definitely a character where I have time to "throw my hands up" and bring down some debuffage.

Unfortunately, he's just not that fun to play at the moment. The horrible jack AI is part of that. But mainly, I got distracted by my elec/ice, which is much more fun for me... I'm guessing the elec/ice will probably be my next 50.
  3. I think it was closer to 80 by the time that week was over (and I'm still doing some on other servers I missed). Don't ever want to do that again!
  4. Multiple red name posts in a thread that isn't a forum game or a goodbye?

I don't even know what to do with that anymore.

    I hope it continues...

Other than that...all the news sounds great, but I'll echo a comment I saw somewhere that I would like to see something about the actual "direction" the game is heading.

Oh yeah, and PLEASE no ncsoft launcher - unless it has or will undergo a major overhaul. I tried that thing in a few different betas and it was horrible. Also, I'd hate to give up all the switch options we have grown used to over the years!
  5. I've teamed with a friend who runs that combo and his Tarantula definitely seemed to put out the damage. I have the Mu pet on my fire/storm, and his tarantula seemed to be stronger, just from a damage standpoint. Could all just be a perception thing of course, as we weren't running and damage trackers or anything.

I'm torn between /scorp for power (defense shield + damage pet + -res debuff) or /psi for theme on my ill/rad. Really torn. I've started taking him redside, just in case. I suspect I'll probably wind up /scorp, just because I love pets.
  6. Also, I still:

    • haven't done a single shard TF, STF, or CoP.
    • haven't gotten a blaster, defender, corruptor, stalker, tanker, or kheld to 50.
    • haven't got my oldest(?) alt (bs/regen) to 50 (41).
    • haven't tried pvp.
    • miss street sweeping.
    • couldn't hit the inf cap, even if I combined 80+ alts of inf.
    • am amused as I recall how I tried to make two separate ff/elec defenders into blasters (one in beta, one right after launch).
    • avoid missions in Oranbega like the Plague.
    • haven't figured out exactly why cut and paste doesn't work for me (something to do with my Dvorak kb layout, I suspect).
    • love this game.

This is pretty much me in a nutshell. I generally forget to make new costumes after the first one.

I finally used the big inspirations in the tutorial for what seemed like the first time just last week... I figured it had been long enough so what the heck, might as well.

I deleted my original fire/kin sometime before issue 1, around level 26. I've finally gotten around to rolling one up in the last month or two and worked it just past my original.

    Also THIS:

Add to that the new(ish) giant arachnos room of obnoxiousness, which may be even worse.

I have a trio of demon/pain and it is pretty darn boring (my only mm team that isn't 32+ yet), slightly less so than say, a trio of /ffs would be. I have much more fun with my trio of demon /pois/dark/therm that I'm taking through the task forces.

    re: OmnipotentMerlin:

Yeah, that would probably make quit playing the game for a month! The only combos I can play with nin these days without getting super annoyed on are /dark & /storm. My first mm was nin/pois...which may be even more annoying than nin/ta, depending on what you are fighting.
  9. Just some random praise for the combo:

I played my elec/ice through praetoria when it launched, then kind of left him at 32 for new projects... I recently came back to focusing on him (l35 currently) and remembered what a fun combo this is. I've been trying to get into /ice forever and this was finally the ticket. The combination of the second non damaging aura + hard hitting single target attacks with the aoe sleep works like a dream.

It seems like it's probably not the most uber combo in the world, but it is a ton of fun and has lots of synergy.

I'm planning on picking up Soul Mastery, primarily for Soul Drain, but also because I've never taken the Seer pet and extra damage can't be bad.

For as much negativity as they generate, the Gremlins are actually pretty decent, at least when it comes to soloing. Only up to +1/2 right now (my accuracy is lacking due to mainly being slotted with basic IOs), but the damage they provide is very noticeable, especially on bosses - AND they don't have the horrible ai issue that seems to be plaguing Jack Frost right now.

Multiboxing MMs is "easy mode" multiboxing (with controllers being #2 probably, IMHO) due to the fire and forget nature of pet damage. I've mutiboxed many mm combos and they are all easier to manage/play than say, dual corruptors like Phire has (for me at least).

Generally, I play them very similar the dps+buff combo where you play a more intensive set (traps, dark, etc.) on the primary and actively target and buff/debuff, then run a low interaction set like pain, thermal or ff on the second with leadership toggles.

Two of my favorite trios are: Thug/trap + thug/ff, thug/dark & dem/pois + dem/dark, dem/therm. Both are slightly more intensive as far as mm trios go because I'm actively managing 2 of them with only one on "mostly afk" mode.

  12. Having just finished my first 50 permadom (fire/stone), I'm thinking about going back and finishing my ice/psi (currently 43ish).

How does this look for a somewhat affordable (only 2 purple sets - the cheaper ones!) perma dom build?:

I realize that Chillblain & Tk Thrust could be swapped out for lotg mules, but I like having the extra control options (root for AVs and TK for soloing). If I find I can't afford the purples, that's probably what I'll do (that and swap flash freeze for a 5 slotted manticore/psi lance).

  14. Very nice. I like how everything matches <.<.

I do the multi mousing thing too, and it definitely gets tricky with multiple targeted aoes - currently running a fire/earth dom + bots/traps mm + some other random - definitely a lot of back and forth at the beginning of a fight.

[Edit: I just realized that you said "ambi" and have a mouse on both sides! Impressive. I keep them both on the same side and just move back and forth. I don't think I could do one on each side.]
  15. Thanks guys.

Here's my current build, looks like I was wrong about my defense #s, it's 3 to softcap S/L & 5 for E/N (probably part of my problem):

Very casual build. Next time I respec him I'll pull out Permafrost (put Winter's Gift: Slow Resist in SS), Stealth & CJ (probably grab it again at 49) and replace with boxing/tough weave, which should cap me to S/L/E/N with 1 EA.

Of course, this is only at level 40 with minimal $$ invested. If that works out OK I'll carry him on to 50 and invest in some more serious ios & perma HF.

I'm definitely torn between defense and recharge slotting so far.

Yeah, the whole less damage over a much smaller area makes me really wonder why they put it in the set - hence my quest for trying to find a build that would actually use it.

I think I'll take the standard advice and just stick to hotfeet now.

I happen to have a fire/earth permadom (@41ish)...but so far I've found the auras superfluous & hard on the end. I dropped Mud Pots, and may drop Hot Feet as well.

Pretty much, for a /fire blaster you going to either have to use BFs as preventative care (see that sapper/mez? pop a BF and smash his face) or get used to retoggling.
I do have a spines/fire and a spines/dark (no spines/elec yet though. HrmmM). But yeah, I'm specifically looking for a blaster build I can enjoy the aura damage with. I'm thinking it's not going to happen unless you build your blaster around regular teaming.

So far, I'm going for a rad/fire and pbaoe focus, but I'll still be skipping the first aura.

re: StratoNexus : That build looks nice! Stacking the auras with the DP pbaoe nuke would be pretty sweet. HMM. Maybe I'll build a box duo or trio around that. Thanks.]
  18. Very nice, I love seeing other dual boxers. I may have to roll up a similar duo... or trio.
  19. I really want to find a build I can happily make good use of both auras on (which pretty much any primary), but I'm not having much luck. With some leftover characters on the test server I've tried a few variations, but re-toggling both after every stun gets really annoying.

I suppose, for a duo with someone with a mez prot buff?

Thanks Samuraiko - it looks like the takeway from that thread (just read the whole thing) is: Do not use the 10.10 ATI drivers, and "maybe" really old NVidia drivers work better than the current ones?

I'm running 260.99 on all 3 of my systems (XP, 7HomePremium64 & VistaHomePremium64) and it's only the Vista one with the issue. I will try some driver rollbacks and soon as I have time.

Hmm. I can do base & base editing just fine, and I can also change my graphic modes.

Are you running windowed or full screen? Did you try switching to the other way? You may be able to use TweakCOH if you can't change the settings in game (I haven't used it in ages, not sure if it still works).

re: Bonehead: I've done that a few times times now .
  22. Since I've had issues finding tanks for various TFs, I've opted to go back and work on my own lately. My first project is my currently 40 ice/ss - I took him for his first spin on the ITF last night. And, while I wasn't totally bummed, I was a little annoyed to be one of the only deaths on the TF because one of the kheld mobs in mish #2 got 2 lucky hits in on me.

My current (bargain) build is softcapped to S/L/N/E with 1 application of EA, and at about 18% f/c & 11% psi. I do not have tough (but I'm going to respec into it) - but I don't think that would have helped much with the kheld mobs. Is the answer here just taunt+hibernate?

One thing I was pleased by is that I did not notice any cascading defense failures as I frequently do on my defcapped /shield brute (who generally does a good job of tanking the ITF).

Anyway, what's the current state of ice/ tankers? Was my underwhelming experience par for the course with ice tankers? It kind of seems like it would be for a set with high defense and no resist to the relevant damage types. How do we fare on the Tin Mage & Apex tfs?
  23. I was (and still am) pretty happy with my veat names, especially compared to some others that haven't aged as well:

Crab: Octet (one of my all time favorite name to powerset matches)
Bane: Dungeon (kind of crab and also the whole darkness lurking thing)
    Fort: Perchance (fortune->chance->)
Widow: Twylight Widow (the weakest name, but named after my first villain to hit 50 way back in the day - Twylight)

I just rolled up a new veat (in preference to spending the money to trick out secondary builds I just rolled another... maybe not the smartest thing for an altaholic!) and named him Nephropidae. He will be a ranged bane/melee crab.
  24. Hopefully the time invested into this post will draw some dev attention but...these days the dev tracker is vacant of all but publicity announcements and farewells so. Bleh.

Did you PM this to the two new powers guys? Synapse & Black Scorpion I think...

As far as your analysis goes, I think you're on the right track with the whole "vision" of the original set vs. how it actually plays out. It "plays out" very poorly compared to the other sets, but I can definitely see some neat scenarios as to how well it "could have" worked in a world where we actually got to pick the individual powers the pets were using. HAH.

I wonder if the angle on full auto was just the case of someone forgetting a digit (it has happened here before....) and no one caring enough about MMs to compare the two sets and fix it?

I won't post suggestions here, because the devs haven't even acknowledged it as a problem and, when they do, they'll probably do their own thing... but I think i've posted some in the main thread. Anyhow, best of luck & thanks for taking the time to post this!
