Just give it a miss then mate, or dont worry about the odd death while chatting.
[/ QUOTE ]
Oh, I am giving it a miss. That's a given. In this thread I'm just explaining why I'm giving it a miss. -
[ QUOTE ]
I can see the logic here, but generally that's not how PvP usually works in any game. Not just MMOGs mind you, but anything multiplayer that pits human against human, that's why I like playing multiplayer games locally on the console, if your mate is being a *******, you can just whack them.

I used to play Delta Force a bit, several years ago. My absolute favorite part of that game was when I could find a nice, unassuming spot with a good view to lie down and act as spotter for the rest of my team. "XY: Two ufs, east of you, moving southwards." Of course, always while I lay there I had my ears peeled for footsteps nearby, and I always had to worry about counter-snipers finding me.
That's how PvP ought to be in my book: periods of calm and deliberation and communication, interrupted by moments of pure chaos and panic. -

If I'm moving about, I can't chat. If I can't chat in a MMO, well... they're supposed to be social, aren't they?
[/ QUOTE ]
Go and stand in the base and chat, now you are just making obsticles up aint you.
[/ QUOTE ]
No. I want the time and ability to talk to my team, to make IC taunts and curses, to roleplay, to have a fun, lighthearted conversation while I'm playing. Not before I'm playing, or after I've played -- during. In PvE there's enough time between mobs to do this, and, depending on the team and your role in it, sometimes even in the middle of the fray. In PvP? "Can't stop. Stalker might get me. Can't stop. Stalker might get me."
It's one thing to be too busy to chat because things are exploding everywhere and the game takes all your attention -- but being too busy to chat because maybe, possibly there could be a potential stalker around? Meh. Fenris take that. I find this kind of gameplay inane, irritating and stupid. It holds no appeal to me whatsoever. -
[ QUOTE ]
Yes true it does need to change but i would like to know what the non pvpers who have posted here think should be done given that they dont take part and dont have a clue for the best part on what they are talking about
[/ QUOTE ]
If you want more people in the PvP zones, I'm afraid you're going to have to listen to the non-PvPers and to what appeals to them as they're who you have to recruit. -
[ QUOTE ]
Ok i didnt mean moving forward literally, i meant moving about.

But there is nothing that can be done about that, all that means is if they realy want to pvp they will learn how to counter a stalker and if they dont well then stick to nice safe pve
[/ QUOTE ]
Which is just it. Most players don't "really want to PvP" anymore than most people "really want to eat lutefisk." They're usually willing to give it a try, but if they don't like the tast, they're not going to preservere and work at it until they've grown accustomed to it and no longer gags. -

*shrugs* Perhaps, although there's certainly a lot of things they could have done better. The fact remains, though, that CoH's PvP is a lame duck, and seems destined to stay that way.
[/ QUOTE ]
Thats your view on it but its far from the truth
[/ QUOTE ]
So what is the truth? Massive uptake of PvP among the playerbase? Siren's Call overflowing with players on Thursdays night? Large changes on the horizon promising to make PvP mainstream? CoH's PvP well reknowned compared to the PvP of other games?
Come on -- PvP has had plenty of time and attention given to it over the last couple of years. If it was going to take off, it would have done so already. It's a lame duck. It limps along, but empathically does not fly, and there's nothing to suggest it'll fly in the future. -
[ QUOTE ]
Given that the hero ATs where not designed with PvP in mind, there was no way to implement PvP in a way that would be balanced, without completly changing everything that had already been done in the game.

[ QUOTE ]
Well thats fine, carry on getting 2 shotted by stalkers.
[/ QUOTE ]
Or I can, you know, just avoid PvP in City of Heroes. Like pretty much everybody else.
CoH's PvP is unpopular with most of the playerbase of CoH proper. That's not the fault of CoH's playerbase, but of the PvP implementation -- the latter exists for the former, after all. -
[ QUOTE ]
Stalkers aint hard to get around, just dont stand still, i dont know how many times thats been said.

Have I mentioned how I loathe games that requires ADD movements? If I wanted to run and jump around like a loon, I'd join an athletics team. -
[ QUOTE ]
To me it seems a lack of knowing how to play and the feeling of knowing how to lose...
[/ QUOTE ]
I, and I suspect most of the non-PvPers who participate in these debates, understand how we'd have to play to do well in PvP (Which is not to say we understand all the details or that we're good at it -- just that we know, from attempts and from reading about PvP, the playstyles that are workeable.) The point is: it doesn't appeal to us. We don't like those playstyles, they're no fun.
The reason we don't participate in the marathon isn't that we don't know how to do well (nor because we don't like competition or can't stand defeat) -- it's because we don't like jogging. -
[ QUOTE ]
That's your opinion, not a fact. Doesn't mean just because there is no 'rewards' as such from PvP, that people don't find it fun.
[/ QUOTE ]
It's a fact that I don't find PvP in CoH fun.
Are there people who play PvP in CoH? Yes, of course. Is PvP in CoH popular? No, not really. Why not? Well, I'm egotistic enough to suspect that the reasons I do not find it fun might also be the reasons why many other players don't seem to find it fun either.
So, yes, on a discussion about the popularity (or lack of such) and reasons for same of CoH's PvP, I do believe it is a relevant point, even though it is certainly based primarily in my subjective experience. -
[ QUOTE ]
The reward is FUN! You missing the whole point of playing this game?
[/ QUOTE ]
I find PvP in Dominions, Chess, Delta Force, Tekken and loads of other games fun. I don't find the PvP in CoH fun. Thus, no reward. -
[ QUOTE ]
You adapt. If you're melee and you come up against a ranged player and get your backside handed to you, you find a way to overcome that. It gets you thinking.
[/ QUOTE ]
Why am I reminded of my boss cutting my deadline in half and telling me "don't think of it as a problem, think of it as a challenge"? -
[ QUOTE ]
About PvP balance. This game is balanced totally around team.
[/ QUOTE ]
The trouble is that it's not structured around teams. There are no PvP incentives for teams, no advantages in going up against a similarly sized team, no score for teams (hell, there isn't even a kill count) and no in-game concept of team victory. Two teams go up against each other, the hospital works towards turning the whole thing into a long, dull slog with no clear outcome. Sure, one team maybe had more faceplants than the other but ... eh, so what?
PvP in City of Heroes, and in particular on a team, just doesn't have any sense of accomplishment to me. -

All the Scandinavian countries will get adverts telling them not to be so smug about their superior social support system and far better schooling.
[/ QUOTE ]
Oh, we already have those. You might have seen them too. They're called "The Olympics" and "The FIFA World Cup." Takes the smugness right out of us.
For a day or two. -

He's just... I don't know, but I find him highly unattractive (and the muscles just make me gag).

No bonus points for him being a gamer and long-time roleplayer? -

"Just so"/"Exactly". -

I wonder if there will be a chance to get our hands on these cossie parts a bit further down the line, another variant on the wedding pack perhaps?

As I understand it, they're not costume parts, but a costume power -- like the ones you got from last year's Halloween event. -
Okay people, waterboarding's off. They're ready for that one. We'll have to do with the blowtorch and the pliers.

Besides a few that got deleted in their teens, my only blaster so far is Patrick Bodmin, a bitter, middle-aged catboy (well, cat-man technically) of an AR/Fire blaster -- which seems to be one of the more unusual combinations. He's currently at level 41, busying himself in the Rikti War Zone by single-handedly hunting down and neutralising Rikti cells.
He's fun; not the highest damage output perhaps, but lots of AR cones for distance and fire for melee. Slow and steady, no endurance problems even without stamina, lots of skills from the power pools. Soloing missions on Unyielding I average about 1 to 2 faceplants per mission, and there's little in the way of real downtime. -

Yes, yes she does. Buck Godot's pretty good too. And "New What's New" -

A "bookmarks" or favourites would be nice too but probably not as useful.

Alternatively, a right-click on a piece of salvage in a receipe to load it into the "buy" field in the auction house. -

Or just one of those little old men in a scruffy jacket with a wooden plackard around their necks that says "THE END OF THE WORLD IS NIGH" in beg red letters.

[ QUOTE ]
Ironically, I believe they did actually increase the spawn rate of many GMs when people complained they never saw them.
[/ QUOTE ]
Yes, but I think the real problem wasn't the low spawn rate as such, but how briefness of the encounters. Blink, and you missed them. With forewarning (like the change in sky colour before a Rikti raid, but even longer, as GMs would be rarer) people would have time to find out about and get in place to take part in the GM event. So even if they were rare, most people would get to take part in them when they do occur. (And they would be much bigger spectacles, too.)
Heck, if they make the GMs rare again, they could even have "GM weekends" with frequent, guaranteed spawns as a draw in addition to XP weekends.
