That worked after restarting the client. Thanks, Bill.
  2. I just tried the 9.8 drivers. They don't work either. Leaving DOF, Water effects FSAA and Bloom disabled from COH and setting them from the CCC, there's still no change. FSAA just won't enable.

I've been looking for a 5850, so I've been lurking around various tech forums. It seems that the 9.11 Catalysts are rather borked. If you're running the 9.11s, try finding a copy of the 9.10s and see if that helps any.
Yep, it's the 9.11 drivers. I downloaded them from the website and didn't even touch the CD that came with the card. The CD has the 9.8 drivers, I can try those.

    So I just...

Piece of advice, if you can spend $30 more, get a Radeon HD 5770 card. It should be quite a bit faster than the 250.

Even with DOF and WE disabled, I still can't get FSAA to work. Either by selecting it ingame, or by leaving it disabled ingame and setting it from the CCC, the pixels remain as blocky as ever.

It's quiet. If I concentrate on hearing it, I can hear the new fan; but during the weeks I had the 9800 GTs, I could hear the fan on that card spin up and make a whole lot of noise. Not this card; it makes about as much noise as a harddisk spinning.

The "low" temperature in COH may be caused by vsync being enabled; I don't like the occasional "tearing", so I enable vsync and my fps are capped to 60, which probably doesn't let the card get enough load to really get hot. But the NVIDIA jumped to 80°C under the same conditions.
  7. Just bought my first ATI card, a Radeon HD 5770. I can't seem to get FSAA to work no matter what I do, enabling it from CCC does nothing. I guess I'll just have to wait until Going Rogue to get proper performance out of this card, but at least I know it's coming.
  8. Ah ha, never mind, I found it. It's in the "ATI Overdrive" tab of the Catalyst Control Panel, where the overclocking settings are. I hadn't even looked at the CD that came with the card, I just installed the drivers from the website.

My case has an adequate fan in the back but no fan in the side panel. It has the space to put one on, but I didn't feel it was necessary so far.

The 5770 is sitting at 37°C idle. Running around in COH it doesn't seem to even reach 60°C, which is great. I'll have to find something to really stress the board with, but COH is 80% of my gaming, so if it runs at 60°C, I'm more than happy.
  9. I now have the Radeon HD 5770 on my system. Ended up paying $270 for it.

The card is 21cm, 8.25" deep. I had space on my case for a "brick" card, but I don't like how they look, so I'm happy about the size of this card.

It has a humongous fan, it's the bottom one in this picture:

I can't find the temperature sensor in the ATI control center though, and SpeedFan isn't displaying it for some reason. Little help figuring this out? I want to know how hot it runs.

Water effects in COH don't work, neither does FSAA. But I knew that would be a headache already. FSAA doesn't seem to work even enabling it from the Catalyst Control Center.

It's quieter than the 9800 GT was. Definitely much quieter than the GTX 260 I heard.

More on my experience with the card as I play with it.
  10. I was PM'd this article: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2009/..._card_review/1

Performance is near identical. Temperature testing says that 5770 also goes over 80°C under full load, so no difference there. Power consumption is a huge difference, 270W under full load. So I'm leaning towards the 5770.

Thanks everyone for all the tips. I'm going to get the card tomorrow at 2pm, so still time to show me some more stuff to change my mind or cement my choice...
  11. Quick reply before I head to work, with my system specs.

The two 9800 GTs were from XFX. The distributor where I bought them told me they had many of those returned as faulty, on a variety of systems.

The power supply is a 550W PowerCooler. While gaming, it only has to feed an Asus P5KPL-AM SE motherboard, an overclocked Pentium Dual Core E5200 (Wolfdale core, running at 3.25GHz per core, stock voltage), 2 sticks of Kingston RAM, one 500GB SATA HD, and one PCI card (wireless adapter).

The 9800 GTs were crashing even with the processor at stock speed, 2.5GHz.

Temperature inside the case is not an issue, I clean the humongous fan of my processor every few months, and it has plenty of breathing room. The 9800 GT would jump to 80°C after fifteen minutes of gameplay, though. The card itself ran hot, not the system.

So the question is: do you want ATI or do you want Nvidia?
My history of purchasing video cards goes like this: GeForce 2, GeForce 5200FX, GeForce 6600 GT, GeForce 7600 GS, GeForce 8600 GT, GeForce 9800 GT. So you can see there's a preference for NVIDIA, which was based on: (1) I hated the driver interface of the Radeon cards that I saw, (2) NVIDIA was supposed to be the better performing company. Right now, I hear the drivers are doing a lot better and that ATI are making better cards, so I have no "wants" one way or the other. I've switched between AMD and Intel processors plenty of times based on performance alone, so I don't have a "fanboi" mindset for either company.
  12. Could you guys with a lot of video card know-how and experience drop by this thread and give me a hand? I'm trying to decide between a HD 5770 and a GTX 260. Any insight is appreciated.
  13. I intend to stay in Windows XP as long as it takes and the main game I play is COH, so DirectX 11 is not a concern whatsoever. Temperature and power may be, though. I believe the 9800gt crashes may have been temperature or power related.
  14. My last video card upgrade went awry and I had to return two GeForce 9800gt in a row; they would work fine for a few hours and then crash the whole system. This has put a dent on my confidence with NVIDIA, and I'm seeing lots of reviews pointing that ATI is developing the better boards now. So I call upon our resident forum gurus (BillZ, are you there?) to give me advice on my next purchase, since I've been without a video card for weeks now, and playing with the integrated Intel chipset blows chunks.

It comes down to two boards that are at basically the same price, $265 vs. $269:

XFX ATI HD 5770 (Juniper XT) 1GB GDDR5
    http://www.netwaveargentina.com.ar/p...id_product=190

XFX GeForce GTX 260 Core Edition 896MB GDDR3
    http://www.netwaveargentina.com.ar/p...?id_product=53

The performance comparisons I've seen put those two cards neck to neck. I'm looking for some testimonials from people with these boards.

    Do they run hot?

How much power do they drain from the PSU?

    Are they noisy/quiet?

Anyone had an issue with them and had to return one?

    Any other comments?

I'll be getting the board this wednesday, so any advice will be appreciated. I'm still leaning towards NVIDIA, but I'm very open to changing my mind.
  15. Hey Rougue, welcome to COH.

Unrelated to your specific problem (yes, the updater can be a pain sometimes, but once it's downloaded the entire client once, all future updates will be a breeze), if you have Windows 7 make sure to either run the game always as Administrator, or to disable User Account Control. COH writes a lot of files to its own folder, and if you install the game in C:\Program Files, Windows Vista/7 complain every time it tries to write in there because it's a "protected folder". If you install it elsewhere, say C:\Games\City of Heroes, it will complain a lot less.

If you don't want to disable UAC, and you already started installing it in the default folder under C:\Program Files, you can move the game by doing a little bit of registry editing; the installation directory is stored in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cryptic\Coh under the key "Installation Directory". Move the files to a place that's not "protected" by UAC and change that key to point there, and it will save you future headache.
  16. The 50-player cap is the reason why I don't do Hami anymore. Either the zone fills up too quickly and I can't get in, or at a client crash I restart the game and appear in The Hive 2 and am unable to rejoin. The day the game keeps track of what instance a character was in and puts me back there when I reconnect after a crash, I'll try Hami again. That, or suddenly enjoying 100% connection stability with the NCsoft servers, which just won't happen being 10,000 kilometers away.

Secondary reason is that it's just too darn repetitive. I enjoy the mini-raid in the Lady Grey TF a lot because there are no blooms, you just beat him up once and you're done. Two blooms would be good. Three might be okay. Four are really boring. Maybe if they were spiced up with monster ambushes to ease the repetitiveness of it; first mito bloom, crystal+rock monster ambush, second mito bloom, fungi+grass monster ambush, dead hami+bunch of hami buds. I actually miss the hami buds a lot, they were a fun bit to right on the big event was over.

The concept is "I got tired of all the muggers outside my window, I'm grabbing this baseball bat, a manhole cover, and cleaning this town." Nothing very fancy :P

Checking the list of names, it's not a hobo character or a street-saavy character, just a guy who got fed up with all the small-time crime going on in a city full of freaking superheroes, and decided to take action. Nothing is grey enough for *him* to ignore.

Edit: checking the suggestions and running 'Beatdown' through Google, I found "beatdown - 9 definitions - A severe beating delivered with the hands and feet; a pummeling so bad, the recipient needs to use his health insurance"... I think I like "Pummeling Leo" :P

Sorry Cat, but in this case I'm going to side with the assumption. The AE farming frenzy was bad enough that a lot of my globals were hiding to avoid getting constantly invited to farm teams, and relied on globals/coalition/global channel to get a team. Now that the farmers are gone, those people are now searchable again.

Like I said on my previous post -- I'll admit the population has gone down. But the people who left are not people you could invite to a team in the first place (unless you were farming) so they're very inconsequential when it comes to measuring population you actually are going to interact with.
  20. Re: "population collapse", those 400+ extra people that were on Freedom during the AE farming are inconsequential to actual teaming. They did not want to join a team, they wanted to farm. Nerfing AE farms means people whose only interest was farming the AE are gone; this is true. However, those are players that I did *not* want to team with in the first place, so it's no loss.

    The Name Thread!

Okay, I'm sure this will be particularly easy for you creative people.

I need a one-word adjective that describes someone who fights crime using a baseball bat (axe) and a manhole cover (shield). It will be used in the form <Adjective> Leo. For example, my other characters are Doctor Leo, Archer Leo, Radioactive Leo, Slicer Leo (claws scrapper)... I just can't think of a single word adjective that describes "beats up things with a baseball bat and blocks attacks with a manhole cover".

It's not about finding pennies in the couch. When you know you have to spend on something, even if you are sure you can't afford it, the best way to go about it is to bite a bullet and spend it. Once that money is gone and you know you can't count on it, you'll find ways to somehow reach the next paycheck, even if it means rice and noodles for a week. I don't think an online game is worth going that far, but I do believe that if you were told "if you do X you'll get Y", and you don't do X, then you have no right to complain about not getting Y.

    End. Of. Story.
First, I didn't call your particular story a sob story, I said that if they made an exception for your "unforseen circumstances beyond your immediate control", then they would also have to make exceptions for every sob story that comes around. It's not a good way to handle customer support.

Second, personal issues do not change the fact that you did not meet the criteria for the promotion. The days you get paid are out of NCsoft's control, too.

This is one of the few things keeping me intrested in this game as stated above. If the beta access is denied, NCSoft can expect me to not be renewing my sub on the 28th.
Then I guess you won't be renewing. The rules were clear and simple: maintain the account active for 3 months. Lucky666 may have been too blunt in putting it, but he or she still speaks the truth: you did not meet the criteria for this promotion, and therefore are not eligible. If NCsoft were to make an exception for you, they'd also have to make an exception for every sob story that comes around. No exceptions means the rules are fair for everybody.
