We just spent an hour running this Task Force. For the second attempt, we had 3 controllers in the team and couldn't hold them. Your change is extremely unwelcome. And what about teams without controllers or dominators? You're just saying they're shafted?

Sorry Castle, you went WAY over with this change. You need to lower their protection if you want any teams other than 8 controllers/dominators to be able to do this.
  2. Oh, actually it's worse. Castle just posted in the patch notes.

So now you know, if you're not a controller or dominator, don't bother trying for this badge. 50 points of hold protection for a team of 8? What the heck, Castle?
  3. After an hour of going through the Task Force with the challenges set up for Mo run, we were stopped cold by the green mitos, which still regen like crazy and won't drop their shield. Avoid.

I ran the Cathedral of Pain while it was live; it was just a really hard trial. With the right resources, it was done in 15 minutes (of course, you had to gather 20 people to run it with). The big deal about it was the Items of Power, which got you great bonuses that could stack (you could have multiple IOPs in a single base) and were given to everybody in the supergroup (so they would be a great supergroup recruiting tool).

If the Cathedral of Pain is brought back with the bases in the current state (ie. not raidable) then it's unlikely it'll grant any item of power, so it's all up to what reward it's replaced with. Merits are the obvious choice.

Yeah, but it's more complicated; you need to use both HTTP::Cookies::Mozilla and DBD::SQLite (because FireFox cookies use SQLite). The IE path is easier.

If I could run it from my own personal website, I'd be good to go.
You can run it from your own personal website:

    * Find your IE cookies folder [after being logged in and remembered by IE and making sure it wrote them to disk]. On XP, it's C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USER_NAME\Cookies. In Vista/7, I think it's C:\Users\YOUR_USER_NAME\Cookies. It's a hidden folder, so you need to enable hidden files first.

    * Copy index.dat and YOUR_USER_NAME@boards.cityofheroes*.txt to the same folder where the script is. If you use IE as primary browser there might be a lot of text files in there, just copy the ones with boards.cityofheroes in the title.

    * Open the script in Notepad, then:

** Delete the line use Win32::TieRegistry....
    ** Delete the line my $cookies_dir = $Registry->...
** On the next line, change "$cookies_dir\\index.dat" to just "index.dat"

    * Immediately below require 'rep_comments.ini'; add the line print "Content-Type: text/plain\n\n"; so the webserver knows that the script is outputting plain text.

    * Delete the line sleep(5);

With those modifications, the script will load your IE cookies from the copy you made, and you can run the script from any web server, because the cookies are stored with the script. The password is not stored in plaintext, so your game login can't be obtained this way; but you run the risk of someone finding what folder you're running it from and gaining access to your forum account. You really want to risk that?
  8. At this point I don't think this is getting fixed until GR... the release schedule for i17 and GR is pretty aggressive, they might not have time to publish any bugfix builds until i18.
  9. Zloth makes a good point. I keep forgetting it. AVG in particular tends to screw up with COH on a regular basis.

Oh wait, you're serious. Let me laugh even harder. *HISTERICAL LAUGHTER*

IE stores its cookies in plain text files in a shell folder which you can find in the registry at HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Exp lorer\Shell Folders\Cookies -- It does not seem to care of what security zone or settings you're using; all the cookies land in there, in simple text files. In my case, there's a text file called leandro@boards.cityofheroes[2].txt which contains the cookies "bbuserid" and "bbpassword". Copy that file, and you're logged in as me. There's absolutely nothing preventing you from accessing that file; not even User Account Control, because that file is stored in the user folders, which aren't a protected location.

At least it doesn't store anything in plain text. Regarding the version number: cookie storage hasn't changed since Internet Explorer 5, back in the Windows 98 days.
  11. For some reason people are sending me PMs on the boards or global messages ingame instead of posting here about the Perl script. People, I'll see the complaints here faster :P

So far people seem to have trouble getting the script to recognize IE's cookies. This can be caused by two things:

    1) You need to select "Remember me" when logging in. No cookies are created if you don't tell the site to remember you.

    2) IE has to write the cookies to the harddisk before the script can read them. Usually just closing IE will do that. But if you're using a program that has an embedded browser, that might not be enough because "some kind of IE" is still open. If you can't figure out which program it is, restarting the computer will take care of that.
  12. That particular pigg is 91MB. Try deleting it, AND delete the file Coh.checksum in your City of Heroes folder; it should force the client to reverify and download that file again.

In case you know how to do a MD5SUM, this is what the Live files are supposed to be; the last patch was small (1.7MB) and should not have modified THAT MUCH. Find the files that changed, delete those, and let the updater get them again.

  13. Please note that prior to downloading patch files, the updater might say "Downloading file manifest" with no progress bar and apparently stuck. This is normal; just let it sit there for five minutes and it'll move to the patching phase, which does have a progress bar and reports download speeds.

Work as in run? Yes. But it won't display anything, because the server doesn't have access to the local cookies for another domain. You'd have to give it your username and password, and I'm not willing to make anything that asks people for their COH username and password.
  15. OK, for the guinea pigs willing to try this thing and see if it works in a system other than mine, install ActivePerl (some of you might already have it, DropStats uses the same scripting language) and then download rep_comments.zip here. Unzip it in any folder, preferably one that has no files already in there, and double click it.

It will use the Internet Explorer cookies for login information, so if you're not logged into the boards from IE, you'll see this:

Getting the forum user ID ... ERROR: Not logged in?
    Died at C:\Perl\rep_comments.pl line 68.

After you log into the boards using IE, it'll go more like this:

Getting the forum user ID ... OK: 375909
Searching for new posts ... OK
Getting reputation for post 2843123 ... OK
Getting reputation for post 2843108 ... OK
Getting reputation for post 2841769 ... OK
Getting reputation for post 2841458 ... OK
Getting reputation for post 2840360 ... OK

And it'll create a file called coh_reputation.html in the same folder, which will be the one I put a screenshot of above.

I used Internet Explorer's cookies because everybody in Windows has access to it, so it's not an endorsement of the browser (I use Google Chrome). If anyone here uses a flavor of Linux I can make it use Firefox's cookies.

Note that the search returns only the last 20 items in the first page; for me that's not a problem because I post only a few times a day, but if you post a whole lot, you'll want to run the script at least once every 10 or 15 posts to make sure all your posts are found. If you post that much you'll also want to increase $chkposts in rep_comments.ini

By default the script includes all your posts in the HTML, including those without any rep, so you can make sure that it's searching correctly and finding your posts. To make it output only the posts with rep, set $allposts to 0 in rep_comments.ini

Hmmm... Not in the current version. It needs your board username and password and stores it in plaintext, and that's seriously insecure. I don't mind it on my computer, but it'd be irresponsible to spread that around. I'll see if I can make it use the web browser cookies instead.

I don't miss that at all. Maybe because I hacked together my own version:

If you select not to turn on ultra mode at startup you won't get to use the I16 graphics engine instead of the new one.

"Turning off" or "disabling" ultra mode means disabling the 4 new graphics options the devs collectively refer to as "ultra mode". But you'll still be using the new I17 graphics engine, even in safe mode.

I'm just trying to explain there is a difference between the I17 engine and "ultra mode". They are not the same thing.
This is what I was referring to. I think Captain Fabulous made the point a lot clearer than I did.
  20. People here seem to be thinking that Ultra Mode is an "addon" to COH that can be easily disabled and is isolated from everything else. It's not. It's part of the pipeline that renders the game, and while you can disable features of it, there's no such thing as "disable Ultra Mode". If you are crashing now and weren't before i17, there is a problem somewhere in the graphics rendering pipeline; but blaming Ultra mode is like getting run over by a car and then claiming the wheels are the only part of the car responsible.

Remember that there were changes made to the graphics code that had nothing to do specifically with Ultra Mode features. Antialiasing is not an Ultra Mode feature, yet it was fixed for ATI users after being broken forever. There are likely a lot of changes to the graphics system like that which cause problems, and they're not Ultra Mode's fault.

People with Intel graphics were hit hard by this, losing access to their shaders until yesterday's patch restored it. In the same way, reporting (with a DXDiag log) what hardware is having incompatibilities will help the devs come up with a solution.

To those being affected and nothing seems to work: keep your cool, post your DXDiag logs with a description of the problem, and be patient. There are many things that need fixing; your issue will get solved too, but the devs are human. They need time to track down the bug and fix it.
  21. Wait, so it's fine to auto-update on Windows XP? The computer I play COH and use Mids in has Windows XP. And my Windows 7 machines ALL have UAC disabled, precisely because it causes so many troubles when writing to "protected" locations.
