This is only true for shield scrappers (and the highest I could get on mine is 90%). IIRC shield tankers actually do hit 90% DDR without the Hami-O exploit, and expensive builds can incarnate-softcap without compromising rech.

SR ought to be a hugely powerful low/midgame tanker primary but I have my doubts about it in the endgame. I expect an IO tanker to be able to survive things that other characters can't, and I suspect that there's too much stuff that ignores def in the lategame for SR to do it anymore.

I have a similar concept with my fire/dark corr; I colored my fire to be the same as my dark, and it's a Darkfire corrupter.
I thought about this, but I'd really prefer it if she were a real phoenix, as in the self-immolating firebird of legend. So fire powers that are real fire are preferable. I'm still interested in any random/alternate ideas people might have for why a phoenix would be able to give people really bad headaches - I have thoughts of my own but there's always a better idea floating out there.

For builds I would agree, but to me a character is a bit like a story/performance/creative work etc. It's something that you can share with others and has an effect on them. So while it's not the only thing I look at, I do consider what people will think of the character when deciding on name and concept.

The reason I brought up that Marvel character is, discussing this with people in-game, a fairly common response I got was "well, Marvel Phoenix has fire and psychic powers too, so you'll be OK." So it's something I'm wary about.

I'll color all of them warm golden light.

My first character ever was a fire/fire blaster, one of countless fire/fire blasters that are phoenixes of some sort. Lately I noticed that, with each iteration of her build, as the power of the character has increased, the emphasis on the /Fire side has decreased to the point that all I have anymore is Ring of fire, BU, consume, hot feet (which I don't have the endurance to run) and fire sword/FSC (which I rarely use).

Therefore, for powergaming reasons, I'm thinking of rerolling as Fire/MM and portraying the Psi attacks as spirit energy. I keep wondering if this will feel 'right' for a phoenix, though. On one hand, you don't normally think of phoenixes as psychics, except for that one Marvel character. On the other, I do like the idea of shredding souls as an avatar of the cycle of life and death. Thoughts?

Note that I'm not asking for playstyle or game mechanical advice. I'm interested in how natural the concept of Fire/MM as a phoenix feels to others, and whether people will keep thinking of that Marvel character when they look at her powersets.
  4. Gravity's problem is that it has approximately the same amount of control that Fire has, minus all the damage and plus some retardedly long animation times. To fix it, you'd need to increase its damage to match fire or give it enough control to significantly outmez fire.
  5. The value of controllers is that they (the good ones, at least) can be built to excel in many fields - damage, personal survivability, debuffs and controls. The synergy between all those strengths makes them powerful, and in situations where one of them doesn't work, they have other strengths to fall back on. They're incredibly versatile, can cope with a huge range of circumstances, and they don't have to put up with a retarded form shifting mechanic to do it. If I wanted to make a 'do anything, go anywhere' character, a controller would be one of my first choices.

That said, these are just the game mechanical reasons. Liking is a pretty subjective thing. You may just decide you don't like the controller playstyle and that's perfectly fine.

A mixture of both tends to be better than only one or the other. Try to get ~32.5 ranged def and permahasten (range softcapped and permahasten would be best, but I find it tough to build for).

It does help that Paragon implemented lots of new rewards, and added an entire tier of rewards reserved for the longest-paying veterans (that you can still buy your way up to), which probably sweetened the deal enough to deflect most of the whining.

But this isn't anything new. People have expressed outrage over merging the markets, giving squishies mez protection, and buffing Fiery Aura. In the end all of those got implemented and the people who nerdraged over them either dealt with it or moved on.
  8. There's no game mechanical reason, no. The only thing FF has going for it is incomplete mez protection from the dispersion bubble. KD, KB and some highly situational gimmicks don't hold a candle to huge permable recharge bonuses, AoE -res, a smattering of controls, heals and the ability to softcap every position. Even if time manip doesn't exist, forcefields has long been overshadowed by better, more versatile powersets e.g. Cold.

    Ranged Knockback

The pessimist in me says this will never happen, not because KB is any good, but because turning all that KB into KD would make a lot of those sets significantly more powerful than they are now.

That said, the dev team has made a lot of changes recently I never thought I'd see (changes to ally shields, market merge, mez protection on squishies, ability to cancel buffs, making the +movespeed in SB optional, buffs to many previously sub-par powersets, etc.) - so maybe they will look into it one day after all.
  10. How did you manage to get 95% DDR? With 3x Membranes in active defense and all the toggles ED-capped, I could only get 90% DDR.
  11. Grav is weak in the sense that it has roughly the same control power as Fire but without any of the damage. It also suffers from some unreasonably long animations. You will really feel the lack of control ability; Controller mezzing power is peanuts next to that of permadom Dominators.

Cold is a top-tier lategame secondary but doesn't offer a lot of mitigation (especially early on, before you get sleet for KD). The main mitigation is -Rech which I found to be hard to depend on.

Altogether you're in for a harsh first few levels. That said, whether or not the character will be strong enough to be playable is pretty subjective. So give the character a try and, if you don't find it worthwhile, it can always be deleted.
  12. A low to mid-ranked set. Cons include redraw and really long animations (fatal in trials where you have to move and react quickly), esp. Executioner's Shot, the slowest T3 blast of any blast set. (edit: after some checking, it's actually the second slowest, the slowest one being Sonic's.) The nuke is is very hard to use reliably without high def or one of the secondaries that floor tohit e.g. Rad.

The main selling point is the crashless nuke, which has longer recharge than rain of arrows, is PBAoE rather than ranged, and is weaker because you cannot spike the damage with Aim like archery can.

It has some nice tricks, such as the powers accepting a lot of procs, a unique -Dmg debuff from chemical rounds and KB that can be toggled on and off by switching ammo. Changing the damage type through switch ammo is mostly a gimmick with little real effect in actual gameplay.

Can we please get something implemented where we can click on her and donate some inf/merits?
  14. Snagged:

    Ragnarok
    Skylark
    Gladiatrix
    Arc Angel

Which was basically all the names save one that I really wanted.

Didn't bother snagging globals or names I already have elsewhere.

I appreciate that they tried to make a costume that actually makes female characters look kind of toned and athletic, but the matching leather panties costume piece doesn't have this skin texture on it. Both really ought to.
  16. Support phantom has a half strength, 60 second duration AB. It's non-permament and the recharge is such that the support pet will cast it on you twice during its duration.

They're not bad since the AB counters slows and end drains and is a big heal over time itself. Phantoms are actually fairly decent single-target damage in exotic damage types (i.e. not S/L/E) and they fly, which makes them less liable to get left behind/stuck.

Not on their own, although Controllers get very good mods for them. You need to supplement them with IO sets and APP powers. My experience is 32.5/45 defense (i.e. roughly 1 small purple less than the current softcap) is the minimum for acceptable survivability outside of trials and inside trials, respectively.

Even a smaller amount of defense may be worth having to stack with ally buffs and to prevent you taking extra damage on trials. I've transitioned to only carrying super/large inspirations on my characters, who all have about 15-20% def to all (in addition to 45 ranged or S/L/E). If I hit a tough spot I eat a super purple and am instantly incarnate-softcapped to everything.

Don't forget to back up IO defense with resists, debuffs, controls and overwhelming damage, and not cripple the rest of your build to softcap anything. Just as controllers that rely too heavily on mezzes to keep them alive are doomed to fail, defense as your only form of mitigation doesn't cut it because there's too much in the modern game that bypasses def.

Cold is a better hard target (AV+) killer than Rad is, because controller Sleet has more -Res than controller EF, and you get further -res from Heatloss.

Plant Control. It's one of only 3 primaries I consider non-sucky for Controllers (elec not considered, as I'm not familiar enough with it to judge), but the pet looks awful and doesn't fit most concepts I would have for a plant controller.
  20. Soloing an AV (I'm going to assume without Lore pets) takes much less than any of the things listed above. A level 50 AV only regenerates in the range of 96 HP/s, well within reach of even the weakest scrappers, and some are extremely easy to tank, e.g. Chimera from the old Maria Jenkins arc, who's probably outdamaged by most IDF bosses.
  21. I'm largely happy with the endgame as is. Incarnate powers could stand to be less laughably trivial to get, and they ought to provide a nearly-constant benefit (e.g. interface) rather than only be available once in a long while (e.g. lore). But anything that makes my characters more powerful is a good thing, and it's nice to see developers encourage multipurpose, generalist builds by giving all characters abilities they don't normally get from their powersets.

    Fire/SD question

It's weird in the sense that I don't see a 6-slotted Gaussian's set in build up, a must-have for all positional defense builds. That gives you 2.5 def to all positions. You also went above the softcap on melee defense so I'd take out one of the sets that gives you 3.75 melee def. You can use the slots freed up to boost your recharge further.

On what to drop, personally I'd drop Aid Self and rely on Rebirth destiny to cover the heals. There's a fair amount of DoT in incarnate trials which makes Aid Self less effective. Rebirth will also be boosted by your spiritual alpha which is a plus. Take the radial one, it gives a huge regen bonus as well that's much more useful than the miniscule +MaxHP that core rebirth gives.
  23. Missed the mark. Non perma AM and lingering rad, tough/scorp shield/choking cloud badly underslotted, and the build isn't actually softcapped because some of the def from stealth suppresses when attacked.

Black Assassin's build is good if you want to stay in melee range and use choking cloud. If you want a ranged defense hoverblasting build, try this. This is just to show you how to get the def/rech, you can finish the rest yourself. Perma-LR/Hasten/AM, 45 ranged def. You have 6 power choices and 5 slots to spend.

Remember to toggle on the spiritual core paragon.

  24. Does power boost benefit the ally shields from Cold? I keep remember hearing that it doesn't, but don't remember exactly why.

My cold corr doesn't have any powerboost so I can't test it.
