  1. I know what you mean re the Tanking bit. I was pulling off stuff over the X2 XP weekend that amazed me! 8 to 10 even level mobs all around (I'm LvL 19 btw) me and my biggest prob was endurance (obviously) but even then it was only after a prolonged fight.
I have a Regen scrapper on the go at the moment and admittedly hes a lot lower level but ATM I think Regen will be hard pressed to match DA.

The only thing DA lacks is a knockback protection which makes fighting council a royal pain in the butt but the power pools can get you around that.
  2. Thanks for that but can you elaborate on why this is so and when you would take it?

My plan was that the slows of the Storm set as well as the imobilises from Blind and flash would hold folks in place while the Phantom Army and The Phantasm splat em. Is this not viable?
  3. The Demon of Darkness shall join you to meet Synapse at the time you have appointed. The mechanical minions of The Clockwork King shall feel the force of my fists. They, like others before them will learn to FEAR THE DARKNESS!

(Demon of Darkness is a LVL 19 DM/DA Scrapper by the way. I am not normally a role player type in CoH but when I meet folks who are I tend to play along to make them comfortable, especially in a team of mostly non RP types. I look forward to seeing how the mix pans out on Sunday! Incidentally this will also be my first ever TF )
  4. Am I just missing them becuase they hide in their Cloak of Darkeness or are there very few double dark scrappers out there?

Most of the time I see Dark Armour with another primary, usually Claws or yet another kuji kiri ninja type with Martial Arts/Dark Armour. When you do see Dark Mellee it tends to be paired with Regen or Super Reflexes.

Am I something of a rarity with my DM/DA scrapper and if so, why is it such a rare combination?
  5. I have an Invulnerable/Battle Axe tanker on the go at the moment, around LvL14 but to be honest I think I have screwed the power selections a bit. Having posted in this thread previously on the build to date, most folks tend to agree,

I "could" bin the build and start again but I have decided to perseve till the 20s and get the respec mission done in order to sort him out. Below is my proposed build which I will respec toward.

What do the top tankers think of the selection and slotting?

  6. Ok taking this one stage further, as an Invulnerable/BattleAxe tanker, which is more important, Taunt or Unyielding?

Also, while Taunt is available at LVL 4 does anyone think this is a little early to actually choose it because you probably dont have all the defensive stuff you need at that stage to handle athe aggro it can bring?
  7. I have recently downloaded a hero builder and have used it to plan the future development of my Illusion/Storm Controller who has just reached LVL 20.

What do you think of the power selection/slotting?

All comments, criticisms and advice much appreaciated, thanks.

  8. What level of security clearance are you recommending for your recruits Midnight Rose?

I know a few heroes who may well be interested in assisting and if they have the experience you are looking for I'll point them your way.
  9. Lady_Leprechaun

    Market Day.

Ok how many of you can relate in some way to this scenario?

You have collected a load of good enhancements from your last mish but your toon can't use em. You REALLY need a particular DO/SO to make your toon rock but don't have the INF to buy it. Sure, you could sell those enhancements you can't use to a field trainer, but you only get a pittance for 'em compared to cost and chances are you can STILL barely afford the DO/SO you want.

Ok I propose a solution. Wednesday nights 19:00 till 20:00 GMT is Atlas Park Market Day!!!!!

Come to the square under Atlas statue and announce what enhancements you're offering to trade. Someone may really need what you don't want and may just have the perfect enhancements for you in return! A simple trade swap like that frees up one of your enhancements tray slots, gets you the power ups you really need and best of all does it WITHOUT COSTING YOU INF!!!!

Even if you can't get EXACTLY the enhancement your looking for you can sell the ones you dont want for more than the trainers will give you. As long are your prices are competetive compared to the trainers full price equivalent then the newbies/lowbies should be queing up to buy!

What does everyone think? Is this workable? If I get a good level of support on here then I will set a date for the first official market date and post it for all to be aware.
  10. I am still pretty much a novice at this game (been playing around 4 months) and am FAR from an expert on builds but......

Isn't ANY power 6 slotted for damage a bit like using an Apache Gunship to trim back the trees in your garden?

Also, with SOs isn't there some kind of "law of diminishing returns" thing with slotting more than 3 of em in a power?
  11. Thanks all for the advice there. I have taken Hover as a prerequisite for flight but to be honest am happy to wait until later to get the full travel power In addition I could choose swift as my 1st entry in the fitness pool which makes me a little faster on my feet for the time being. If teams want me that badly they will wait till I get there!

I did not consider dull pain as I was not aware of the increased HP leading to increased regen of other stuff. This is something I need to think again about.

I am also thinking Hasten may not be quite so urgent as most of the defence powers are toggles not clicks. Basically it is just gonna be a second panic button after Dull Pain, to be used in the event of a detoggle attack getting thru.

So my next powers will probably be Dull Pain at 12, Taunt at 14, Swift at 16, Health at 18 and Stamina at 20. That lot should allow me to scrape by till 20. I can then get another Invulnerability power (maybe Resist Energies or Unyeilding) at 22, Flight at 24, Hasten at 26 and finish off from there.

    What do we think?

By the way, whoever said Tanker Builds were tight was not kidding! Also, while I did get the Primary/Secondary back to front I took that info from Prima's Official Strategy Guide which also has it [censored] about face. That inspires confidence in the book doesn't it?!
  12. I have a BattleAxe/Invulnerable Tanker on the go at the moment,currently LVL 10.

At these lower lvls I felt I needed attacks more than the defence stuff so took Gash,Chop and Beheader. Taunt will come later when I feel safer about handling lots of aggro.

From the secondary I have Resist Physical Damage, Temp Invulnerability and Resist Elements. I also have Hover from the pools with a view to getting Flight.

With an eye to the future, I am considering not bothering with any more attacks till much later and just getting the secondary powers (plus Fitness pool stuff and Hasten). The plan is to simply stand there and soak up damage, with the occasional use of the 3 attacks, while the team does the splatting.

Is this realistic/practical or, like the title of the post says, am I being naive?
  13. Ok peeps, some advice needed here from those in the know...

I have an Illusion/Storm 'troller on the go, currently L13. So far I have Spectral Wounds, Blind, Deceive, Flash and Supes Invisibility with Gale and Snow Storm from the secondary. I just took Hover at L13 with a view to getting Flight.

So where do I go next on the main Pools?

Group Invis seems to be unpopular from what I've read on the forums.

Steamy Mist seems more useful and fits in much better with the character concept but does not stack with the Invis I already have.

In either case they both strike me more as being Defender powers than 'troller ones. Should I just skip em both, get pool powers for now and wait till Phantom Army and Freezing Rain come along?
  14. Fair point re the other blaster secondaries and I should probably have included this counter in my original post....

I feel that most of the others (ice in particular) allow you a greater degree of mob control. This control limits the amount of melee agrro you atually face. Fire does not seem to have this element (pun intended) to it.
  15. Before we start I should make clear I have a fire/fire blaster at lvl14 and hes fun to play. (Debt bigger than my mortgage mind you!)

Ok, we all know Blasters are the ultimate squishies in the game and melee as a blaster is NOT wise. This being the case why does the fire secondary seem so melee/close up orientated? Whats the idea in making a Blster do things that are harmful to his continued upright status?

    Any thoughts?
  16. I asked for advice a few weeks ago on appropriate power sets for a "knight in Shining armour" themed tanker I was planning.

I was thinking of Ice Armour but a few people suggested Invulnerability would be a better choice. i have now made the Character and BOY were they right.

So, a brief note to say thanks to everyone who posted in my earlier thread for the great advice that allowed me to get just the effect I was after.

    Cheers!
  17. Thanks all, more great advice especially that mammoth post from Shannon.

I teamed with group last night doing Frostie and payed a lot of attention to what the Tank was doing, keeping in mind all the advice given here. I really began to see how the tank works and how its different to a scrapper.

I am now really looking forward to rolling the new character and getting him going.

Thanks again all for opening my eyes!
  18. Thanks all for some helpful advice there.

Since making my OP I have had a bit more thought about the concept of this character and I think Storm is going to be the best fit for the character.

Ironically however, with the concept I have in mind, Grav may not be my primary choice after all and I may have to go with illusion.

Any opinons on the viability of Illusion/Storm as a combo?
  19. Thanks all for some excellent advice there. Particular hanks to Moraelin!

I am an impatient cuss and am looking for early effectivenes in this character so from the info in your post I can pretty much rule out SR.

I accept that the magic origin means I could justify any and all weird powers but I kinda figured on him simply having his fighting abilities enhanced to superhuman speed and skill, hence the "pure" broadswaord focus. Regen/INV/SR would all fit wih this of course but I think, to be honest that its gonna likely come down to REGEN in the finall call.

Thanks again for all the help folks!

Catch you all on the flipside!
  20. Hey folks, thanks for lots of great advice and also great PICCIES!

I have had another thread going for advice on how best to use a tank (ie not a big slow scrapper ) and between the two lots of posts I am now fairly happy and have a concept and choices pretty much fixed.

Still not sure how I'll take to tankin mind, I fear it may just be not my style but even if this is the case, I'll definitely keep the toon this time and just lvl it slowly.

For the record I think INV/AXE is gonna be the choice.

Thanks again one and all for the help!
  21. Hmm, thanks for the points toward the guides folks they are very useful.

Have to say that from the sound of most of what I have read and from your posts the role of the tank is "Punch Bag".

I ditched the original tank toon as I found him dull and I kinda figured that was my inexperience. From what I'm reading though, the archetype may simply be not that proactive for my style of play.

I hope not coz he will be one of four linked toons I am planning after the I7 release and I want them all to work. I will certainly give him every chance and unless I find I REALLY HATE tanks he will definitely not be deleted, just not played much or lvled.

    Thanks again all.
  22. I have a thread going on with advice for a tank build, thanks to all who posted on that but now I need some other advice.

My 2nd ever toon was a tank and I ditched him as boring by lvl 7ish. I think I expected to play him as a bigger slower scrapper which of course he wasn't.

With I7 I intend to try again but.. How do I play? What exactly DOES/SHOULD a tank do?

    Help?????
  23. Hi all,

When I7 comes on line and I have all the cossie options I intending rolling up 4 toons with a linked backstory. One of these is going to be a magic origin Scrapper with Broadsword as his primary set. What I am wondering is my best choice of secondary?

I want the character to be fairly "pure" in terms of his sword being his main attack. This means dark/fire/ice stuff is probably out of the picture. I was thinking regen would be useful but someone else has suggested elsewhere that Invulnerability might be better.

Any thoughs and pointers are greatly appreciated.

    Thanx in advance.
  24. Ok, this is taking an interesting turn.

It actually sounds as if INV may be best choice to fit with the "shining armour" image although I ruled it out as I thought it would be too "bland". Re the weapon, mace strikes me (pun intended)as being slightly more "in concept" than axe but I think I will compromise there, as axe sounds more effective in game play.

I do want to strike a good balance between solo/team play but I fear I will have a steep learning curve to get out of the mindset that a tanker is just a bigger slower scrapper. I suspect thats one reason I got so bored of my original Tank.

Again, thanks for all advice and any more thoughts are always welcome.

  25. One of my main toons at the moment (Harlequin Healer) is an Empathy/Psionic defender, only on lvl 13 so far but no real trouble soloing yet.

Like you, I enjoy the "healing hands" on approach so most of my powers are EMP ones with a few PSI offence powers. Even with this build I am soloing fine.

Looking ahead to future power choices I can see that the post about being a buff machine might be true. The higher end EMP powers do seem to be buffs not true heals. This being the case I will probably focus on more PSI/offensive powers for a while thus making her even MORE viable as a solo performer.

So, in answer to the original question, DEFINITELY YES!
