    Totally Jealous

Learning to draw superheroes and learning to draw real life are two very different topics in my opinon. The former requires imagination, something you don't need to bring to real life, because all the details are spelled out for you... and I'm not talking about color theory because that too is subjective.

There are plenty of sites out there that have online drawing communities which help beginners, and I believe these require an almost "second job" thinking if you are gonna push yourself to become better.

That said, I'll state it again as a personal choice, if you "add" manga thinking to your everyday drawing, not as a substitute, but as an addition, it can only help your story telling ability. *

There is no substitute or shortcut for drawing for real life, you just have to do it.

While many sites offer great tutorials, it can't beat having feedback for your mistakes, or inspiration for your hopes. My advice is to check out some art sites, they usually have seperate forums for drawing, figure work, and or illustration.

When I use to moderate at Wet Canvas, we started a weekly art event to get people motivated and in practice. It is now an entire forum unto itself, so I'm quite happy to have been the father of that. However those events were geared towards mid level abilities that were stagnating. WC also offers a lot of great threads on learning, but whoa you'd have to cypher through all the kerrrap like on any site.

If you want some industry inspiration, check out the sketchbook threads on Concept Art.Org. Also if you can find the Andrew Loomis books, they seem to be popular with beginners...

In my search for that, I found this... scroll down to the Fine Arts section and click on the drawing links.

    Hope that helps...

I can see why you might not want to use it.

I like CBC for making stories out of the screenshots I take in COx. My only wish is that it would allow me to create my own panel layouts to place picture into.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I tried the trial for about a day, but I seem to remember on the forums of their site, there was a download for doing just this thing... making your own panel layout that is...

    New Sketches

Okay couldn't help myself, all I really had was the head, and a very different body, because I was drawing from memory... anywhere here is the rest of him after refreshing said memory...

    Pallequin Ink

Apologies but coloring will have to wait for a while, I'm backed up on my list even more now...

Forgot: the flaming sword and glows on the face and body will be done in Photoshop... I left it bare on purpose...

    My First Tablet

Try this star, on one layer make a thick edged rectangle, say 5-10 pixels wide for the outer line. This is so your brain registers a work space and not the blank page of dooooom.

Then make a new layer over that, and draw something primarily in the rectangle. It's okay if you go a little bit outside the rectangle, but try to stay in as much as you can.

Think of it like those penmanship books, except instead of writing letters or numbers, you're making certain kinds of lines. Also try writing your signature with your whole arm on a blank page, then compare that to just using your wrist and fingers to writing it inside the rectange. You should see a huge difference.

    Hope that helps.

Edit: and thanks for the advice on a place to shop LJ... i'll have to check them out when i free up some more funds for art suplies!

    [/ QUOTE ]

You could always do some quick pencil only sketches for art supplies,
that is if you can find a store that mails out say 10 packs.

    Hmmm here's a My Simon link for a 5 pack a 10 pack and a 100 if you're nuts...
Those are some pretty affordable prices for perspective clients I'm thinking...

    Btw looking good brother!

    New Sketches

Spending the next few days sketching hopefully the rest of my que, so that I'll have nothing left but inking and coloring after this week.

That said I won't be taking anymore requests, I've kind of overdone it by clicking every cool costume you guys come up with... so that's my own fault.

Anyhoo, sorry for the sketch dump, but I didn't want to start 20 threads. I'll try to make an additional siggy line when I'm done of all the sketches, but for now, here's:

    My First Tablet

HA! My wife has the same exact problems, here's what I tell her:

    1) Don't think of the 4 x 5 as being finite, it's "Tablet Space", so your brain has to adjust to the laws of physics being broken.

    2) Your mind and your hand, arm, wrist must be one young padawan (this brings out all kind of french curses at me) for the pen/lightsaber of woot goodness to work.

    3) Duct tape your forearm to the table surface and just move your wrist. It's a reverse of that Kill Bill scene where she tries to move her toes. You're trying not to move anything else but your hand.

    4) An inch on the screen is a micro-nano inch on the tablet, get use to it, the tablet will mock you everytime you try to break that constant.

When you finally get all of that done, you will one day look at your mouse like the tricycle of art tools it once was... and you'll want wait for it... a bigger tablet!!!

    Have fun!

    Xer'Tul sketch.

Xer'Tul you fool, never tell them how long it takes or that you haven't done it in a while, now the art have you! There is no escape!!!

    *breathe*

See this is how it starts... first loads of compliments, then requests out the wazoo, then you're up all hours of the night drawing TA & Rowr, while you're hopped up on 4 gallons of Folgers wondering when they invented daylight and is it ever gonna come, well it's NOT!

Not for you, now get back to drawing!

    *continue breathing*

...but since the only hotpressed I was able to find was 140lbs (and I use a LOT of water when I paint) buckling has been a major problem.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Graver have you tried ASW Express online, they have:

ARTISTICO "TRADITIONAL WHITE" 300 LB HOT PRESS WATERCOLOR PAPER - 30 SHEETS for $199.99

That's a decent price for Fabriano paper, and if you've ever used 300lb over 140lb, it's a world of difference. It's so damn nice, it makes me nervous to paint on such a beautiful piece of paper, cause I'd hate to waste it if I flub. But at $6 for a 22 x 30 sheet, you get over that quick though... anyway always buy paper in bulk, cause running out sucks...

  16. Great color... very inspiring!!!
  17. Great pose on the Comrade Hero, hope when I get to you I can do something as worthy...
  18. These are great Mardun... I too made some alts this week.

One called Lady-Judgement (notice the clever hyphen), a broadsword/regen scrapper which just got accepted to the Sisterhood of Paragonian Knights... as did her evil twin, an electric/electric brute called "Bad-Judgement" who got into the Rogue Knights.

I will post drawings as soon as I stop myself from playing, just hit 18 an hour ago with my scrapper, and I gotta say, I love the yummy goodness of Whirlwind Strike... feel the pain!

nuh uh, it wasn't really mine, it's everyones, I'm just a nut for posting faster than the speed of "where the hell did that come from", sides I keep TA waiting indefinitely, so he gets free sketches ad infinitum. I really like the gold and had I seen this sooner would have included some...
