For me, it's Desdemona, Mirror Spirit and Vanessa deVore (Carnival of Light version). As far as I'm concerned, 'Nessa can leave her mask on.
-
Penny's powers were insanely cool, and her outfit was pretty darn good too. But can we get some love for Vanessa deVore's top?!? That thing was awesome, with the lace-up centerpiece and the fringe on the bottom! I want THAT!

Quote:I ran this a few hours ago and two words popped into my head as soon as the cutscene started (and it does look nicely filmed, at least):
KNOCKOUT ARROW.
She's using mental powers, and unless I missed some key part of City Lore, the general rule is 'knock out the psychic, knock out the psychic attacks'. There's zero reason to kill off Psyche aside from to make Penny Yin the new uber-psychic.
For me, this was just your generic mission runs (why were the Nemesis even there? I didn't get Part Two at all; it was just padding) with a 'shock twist' cutscene at the end. I actually /slapped Manticore as soon as I ran back to him because his big pancaking mantle was obviously cutting off the flow of blood to his brain.
I'm not afraid to say that I've been spending more time playing other games of late than CoH because the quality of the writing in these arcs just turns me off. I feel like there's no faith in putting my character on the spot to even have the illusion of affecting events, so I'm either too late or in this case two maps away so I can't do anything about the outcome.
It's really, really hard for me to be invested in the story or even feel like I'm important at that point. I pretty much expect another big scripted event to wrap up SSA #7, and this 'book'. Bring on Volume 2 and hopefully a lift in quality.
S.
+1.
Let's not stop with Stun Arrow. How about Cryonic Arrow? EMP Arrow? Surely Manti didn't burn all his inspirations getting through Oranbega; I'd hope he'd be carrying at least one wakie. Maybe a temp power Rez Other, like what comes in the Super Packs? Or how about taking an NPC with one of the many powersets capable of rezzing others? Or maybe even one of the players with a rez power!
Really, I've enjoyed most of the SSA missions until 5 and 6. However, now the forced actions we have to play along with and the utter incompetence of many of the signature heroes are wearing far too thin. This is stretching suspension of belief too far at this point, even for experienced and open-minded players. A snippet of conversation in teamspeak while running the final leg of SSA mission 6 last night, with names redacted for anonymity:
Player1: another ritual?
Player2: yeah
Player1: i'm sure it will go smoothly with no complications whatsoever
Player2: LOL
Player3: lol
Player2: I'm sure
Player1: because we all know these things never have disastrous, unexpected consequences
Player3: right
This is about where I stand now. Looking back at the SSA missions and our new Valentine's day mission arc...
Mission 1--Mysterious villain's magic ritual using big obelisk drains Synapse's powers and nearly kills him, empowers a Lost Boss and nearly empowers Echidna.
Mission 2--no magic ritual. Yay.
Mission 3--Magic ritual set up to "kill" Alexis Duncan-Cole. Not really needed, but it's establishing a pattern.
Mission 4--Magic ritual using the Dirge of Chaos sets up Malaise's attack on Sister Psyche, nearly killing her and allowing him to force himself into her mind.
Mission 5--Magic ritual drains Statesman's powers, allowing Wade to kill him.
Mission 6--Magic ritual to supposedly help Sister Psyche take control of her mind again goes horribly wrong, leading to Manticore killing her and inadvertently sending her powers to Darrin Wade.
Widow Maker arc--Magic ritual goes horribly wrong, nearly killing the player character protagonist.
Well. At this point, even Flambeaux can figure that when someone says, "Hey, let's try out this magic ritual to try and accomplish _______," the proper response is, "NO." So why are these supposedly best-of-the-best NPCs doing something incredibly stupid without preparation, without backup, without assistance, against a master villain who has proven smarter and more cunning than anyone has ever given him credit for... and doing the same dumb things over and over again? Logically speaking, there is no reason, and at this point, "to move the story along" just isn't good enough for me. I'm at the point that as much as I want to see the end of the story and the final outcome, I just can't justify my main character--with nearly eight years real-time experience as a Hero--being either so incredibly stupid or so astonishingly naive as to go along with plans like these.
However, reading Redlynne's post on page 11 explicating the theory that Sister Psyche and possibly Manticore himself are setting up Wade gives me some hope. Maybe, just maybe, we're seeing one of the Heroes start to out-think Darrin Wade, and that would give me some positive feelings for this arc again. I really hope this is the case, and the little bit about the speech balloons really does imply something like this. Red, I hope you're right, because otherwise this arc is going to go down as a case study in Supergroup incompetence. -
My Electric Melee/Super Reflexes brute with a background as a professional Lingerie Football League player approves of this thread's suggestions. Proper shoulder pads in particular would be awesome, although there are some decent approximations possible.

What really sells a set for me is the overall combination of buffs to the power, set bonuses and proc effect as well as proc fire rate. For me, like many others in this thread have pointed out, Posi's Blast is simply the best set choice out of a group that runs from weak to fair/good. Targeted AoE sets are starving for new non-purple choices, even more than the other categories.
My suggestions:
Valkyrie's Strike
Acc/Dmg
Dmg/End
Acc/Dmg/End
Dmg/Recharge
Acc/End/Recharge
Chance for Damage Resistance Debuff on enemies.
Bonus for 2: +3% to damage
Bonus for 3: +2.25% to maximum Endurance
Bonus for 4: +2.5% to smashing/lethal resistance
Bonus for 5: +3% to ranged defense
Bonus for 6: +2.25% to maximum Health
Fusionette's Fusillade
Acc/Dmg
Dmg/End
Dmg/Recharge
Acc/Dmg/End
Acc/Dmg/End/Recharge
Chance to gain +7.5% endurance
Bonus for 2: +7.5% resistance to To Hit debuffs
Bonus for 3: +2.5% to Recovery
Bonus for 4: +3% to damage
Bonus for 5: Knockback protection of 4 points
Bonus for 6: +2.5% to ALL damage resistance AND +1 to Threat Level (for Blasters, Corruptors, Peacebringers, Warshades, Soldiers of Arachnos and Widows only); +2.5% to energy resistance for all other Archetypes. -
How insane would it be to want some of these little trees as MM or Plant Control pets? Because they're adorable.

Quote:Pretty sure that the Rule of 5 renders ANY bonus beyond the fifth irrelevant, regardless of whether it's the same bonus value or a different value, resulting in only the five highest bonuses counting toward a power or attribute. So a sixth +10% recharge reduction and a +8.75% recharge reduction would both be equally extraneous if you already had five +10% accumulated.2) If you already have 5 epic sets in your build you may end up with overlapping set bonuses thus going beyond the "rule of 5" limit and "wasting" set bonuses (a biggie would be the 10% recharge bonus). If you already have 5 epic sets you can avoid "catalizing" the ATIO set and get it's not inconsiderable 8.75% recharge bonus on top of the x5 10% recharge bonuses you're getting from 5 epic sets.

Quote:These two made me LOL.4) The Carnival of Shadows has bought all the good shoes for women, so go stomp on 40 of them until you find a CoS chick with the right size feet and swipe her shoes

I love this. Are they going to get a ceremony, or some in-game recognition at least, I wonder? I'm not exactly clear on how much of the Valentines' info is tongue-in-cheek and how much is a preview of What Is to Come, but I'm getting the feeling that it's a significant amount of both.
-
This is what impresses me as well. Going beyond the unprecedented step of letting players vote for what we want and throwing in extra bits and pieces based on our reasoning behind our votes? That's just astounding. Applause and accolades all around, guys and gals. I'll buy this set the day it goes live, guaranteed.

The power supply is something I always suspect when very odd crashes start occurring. The fact that you completely replaced your graphics card without resolving the problem makes the power supply even more of a suspect. However, there are still lots of other little things to consider.
Have you overclocked anything? Replaced the RAM? Use an uninterruptible power supply that might be throttling the power throughput just enough to cause problems under heavy load? It sounds crazy, but I've had it happen to me. If you've changed any hardware before the problems began, the motherboard could have been damaged, which can also cause weird and unpredictable crashes.
Are you having trouble with any application other than CoH? -
It would have made much more sense and been more fitting if States had died as part of a heroic sacrifice. Such as...
<cue Statesman stepping onto the triggger of the ritual>
Darrin Wade: "Do you have any last words before you die?"
Statesman, in obvious agony, struggles to his feet despite the pain coursing through his body as his powers are stripped away. "Yes... Wade..." he managed to force out through clenched teeth. "You're not... the only one... who can use ritual magic."
<Camera pulls back to reveal the ghostly figures of Numina, Kelly Nemmers, War Witch and Archmage Tarixus, all hovering at equidistant points of a circle surrounding the entire mountain top. As Wade looks at each of them in turn, some of the rock slides off of the side of the mountain top, revealing glowing runes.>
Numina: "You have shown us that you are indeed a much greater threat than we had credited you, Darrin Wade. But your glee will be fleeting."
Tarixus: "Very, very fleeting." (with appropriate cackle)
Kelly Nemmers: "The power of Statesman has been a force for good and justice for nearly a century, Wade. But all of us--and even Marcus himself--would rather it disappear from the world forever than fall into the hands of one as wicked and depraved as yourself."
War Witch: "Which is why we came up with this particular ritual. We had a very good idea of your plans, and this was our final failsafe we had prepared with Statesman's help over the last week: a magical working that would only be triggered by Zeus's power being ripped out of Marcus Cole's body. A working that would use such an event to destroy not only the subject, as you had planned, but the caster as well."
Tarixus: "You see, boy, no one wants you to have the power of Zeus. Your predilection with the Shadowgod already made you dangerous, but letting you have the power to breach the dimensions and bring the Beast here is unacceptable."
Numina: (to War Witch) "Marcus can't hold out much longer. I can feel the Incarnate energy gradually wrest itself free due to Wade's magic."
War Witch: "Then it is time."
Statesman, slowly walking toward Wade, gold and crimson energy splashing around him (voice subdued but firm): "I would sacrifice my life to save my daughter, or to bring her back. Just like I would sacrifice it to end your menace once and for all." As he finishes, Statesman grabs Wade's shirt.
Darrin Wade: "You fools! This masochistic exercise will destroy all of you, too!"
Kelly Nemmers (with a spectral smile): "Hadn't you noticed, Darrin? We're already dead."
<Cue the entire mountain exploding, followed by Statesman's cinematic reunion with his wife and daughter.>
Now THAT would have been a good, heroic, climactic ending. You like that one, Oz?

I was previously not aware of the Wand working on Conscripts but find this bit of knowledge incredibly cool. I also find the fact that someone in development/programming planned this out without ever making mention of it or reference to it even more incredibly cool. I'll be trying this out myself soon. Thanks much for passing this bit of knowledge on.

Chainmail shirts, sleeveless and long-sleeved.
Chainmail bikini top and bottom.
Chainmail skirts.
Patterning on "With Skin" pieces. -
I always have to go with the Leather skirt if I'm trying to match to Sleek costume pieces. It's close, but it would be ideal to have a Sleek Skirt category.

A for me. Love the retro look, the spot for a unit patch on the upper arm, and the boxy regulator/controls on the chest.

Quote:I completely liked the American version of "Dragon Tattoo" better than I did the Swedish version as well. I thought it flowed more smoothly, had more punch and gave us a more plausible ending as well. Please understand, I really liked the Swedish version. I thought Noomi Rapace did a great job bringing Lisbeth to life. But Rooney is more what I think of when I think of Lisbeth: small, quiet, full of pent-up rage but also very afraid of much of the world. Rapace embodies a confidence that I just don't get from Lisbeth's character, and that always created a teeny bit of disbelief when I watched the Swedish version of the movies.I disagree, I thought Rooney Mara made a better Lisbeth... I'm sorry for the sacrilege I'm making for all the people who are hardcore fans of the Swedish version, but I have to admit I liked the American version better in all respects.*
*I also felt the same for Let Me In when I compared with Let the Right One In.
As for "Let the Right One In," I'd be hard-pressed to pick either version as clearly superior to the other. Chloe Moretz did a terrific job (as always for her) and the pacing/editing of the American version felt better, but the glimpse of CGI we got was weak and didn't do as good a job as the Swedish version in capturing both the attack on the neighbor woman and the subsequent aftermath. Like in the pool scene, sometimes less is more; both versions did a fine job there, with the American version showing wisdom in not messing with what already worked. -
Roller Skates.
Make it not as fast as Super Speed but with a slight +Jump, so it falls in between SS and Ninja Leap both for speed and jump height. -
Quote:I want one too.You know what I'm fixating on? She has a belly button. When can I have one of those?
Can we talk about navel rings, too? Maybe a mini-mini-cape rig for belly button dangly chains?
(Okay, that last part was mostly a joke, but a simple piercing option would be really cool.) -
Some of my favorite examples of writing in the game:
Veluta Lunata's arc. I think if this was easier for people to find and obtain before they outlevel it, it would be talked about much more.
Vernon von Grun's arc. Funny, original, and off-the-wall nuts. Perfection for a mad scientist theme.
Mako's and Ghost Widow's patron arcs.
Seer Pia Marino's arc. Great example of explaining the game universe's lore and background without sacrificing storytelling or dumbing things down.
Peter Themari's and Westin Phipps' arcs. When evil plots make even villains cringe and hesitate, writers are pushing the envelope in a very lovely way.
Keith Nance and Jenni Adair's arcs. Maybe my favorite blueside arcs at the moment.
Admiral Sutter's task force. Annoyance of the Durays aside, the writing and plot are great. Dialogue in particular rocks.
Matthew Habashy's arc. It's nice to have an alternative to the same boring lvl 1-5 intro missions, and a good ending is an unexpected plus.
Warrant's storyarc. Very, very well done. Nice way to draw people into Praetoria's backstabbing politics.
Antimatter's arc. The slow dawning of the amorality present through almost all of Praetoria's power structure makes the ending even better.
IVy's arc. I can't explain why I like it so much, but I do.
Katie Hannon's and Blind Makwi's arcs. I still dislike the forced ending, but it grabs you from the start and keeps throwing shocks at you. The reveal about the truth behind the Apparitions gave me cold chills. Very well done. -
Quote:This is a genius suggestion. Two thumbs up.For the next year, have 12 heroes from each server fill in for Miss Liberty (one hero for each month on each server). That would be a lot of contest winners! The characters must not only look the part, but have a bio that shines, because trainer bios are now readable. (Which is awesome!!!)
Devs could pick from the runners up in the upcoming Freedom Phalanx contest. It would give a lot of depressed finalists a pick-me-up!
After that, the role can either be filled with an established lore character; or...maybe even better, each server could vote for a winner from the year's 12 trainers. This would give each shard of Primal Earth its own trainer! -
Quote:Numina's outfit is very conservative, and the Vindicators have Valkyrie, Mynx, and Luminary all dressed conservatively. Well, as much as Luminary can be dressed. Is there a female member of the Freedom Phalanx that DOESNT show skin? I'm just saying now is a good oppotunity to set a different standard for how comics envision female heroes. Or not. But they dont ALL have to show skin, do they?
As for Penny's possible hero names, we already know Bad Penny belongs to a villain (with an amazing bio, btw). I suggest Psi Princess. -
Honestly, this does seem like the most likely outcome for such a fight. But I'd expect Fusionette would last two or three more seconds than Flambeaux, if you can count that as a win.

Quote:Verrrry interesting theory. In fact, this makes a lot of sense. I think that would be a great place to take their ongoing story, and it could provide an upcoming point of happiness in a season of loss for Paragon City. If it does happen, my bet's on a girl they name Alexis.I was thinking of why Sister Psyche might not be there and thought about stuff from SSA #1, and a thought occurred: Maybe she's pregnant and unable to do the heroing stuff for a while. We did see when we were in her head that she really wanted to have children. Maybe with the maturation of Penelope, she saw that she could leave the mental/psychic stuff to her for now and start a family with Justin. Just a thought.
As for Penny's new costume, I actually like it. I love the little straps and buckles! Wonder if they move with her body as she moves?
