You need to be careful about the power supply when considering upgrading the video card. That machine is somewhat limited in that regard, having a 300W power supply. What I've been looking at for my new machine are PSU with at least 370W on the 12V rail alone.

This was the cheapest Gateway machine that I could find that provides a turn-key Ultra-Mode option: DX4831-07

That iBUYPOWER Phenom II X4 based machine linked upthread is a better deal.
  3. I answered the "is there a worthwhile AGP upgrade" question for myself a couple of months ago.

The best available AGP video card at the moment is the HIS Radeon HD 4670, which benchmarks out at around 80-85% of the GeForce 9800 GT that is the nominal entry level UM card. In other words, it'll probably handle most of the UM features at minimal settings.

Whether that's worth $125 (at NewEgg or TigerDirect) or not depends upon what the alternatives are. For me the answer was "not worth it"; as it's my 2nd machine, has a 7600 GT in it and it will be replaced entirely some time this year. If the machine still had its original FX 5200 in it, then I'd be upgrading even for just the few months.

[Edit:] The Quadro FX 3000 benchmarks out at about 25% of the GeForce 9800 GT.
  4. CoT can pose several problems to melee. First, the Spectral Lts use a power called Chill of the Night that debuffs your ToHit VERY heavily. Second, the Behemoths have Invincibility, which buffs their Defense considerably for each foe in melee range of them. And third, the Earth Thorn Casters can use Rock Armor, which buffs their Defense versus Smashing and Lethal attacks.

The first thing to do is turn down the difficulty so you aren't fighting +2s. Next, the best thing would be to find a Defense power that you use with a free slot for a Kismet +ToHit IO. That directly counters a portion of their Def/-ToHit. After that, slotting up Crushing Impacts would be very helpful as the 4th Set bonus is +7% Acc and the 5th is +5% Recharge - a very handy bonus for a Stone Tanker.

2 SOs should be enough for PvE. What are you fighting? That sort of frustration cries out "Spectral Daemon Lord!" to me.
  6. Well, UM testing is still in Closed Beta, so no one can give you an informed answer.

I believe this thread provides the best answer you can get at this time.

    [Edit:]

After scanning the thread my guess would be that the answer is "no".

She's right, powers don't begin to recharge until they are done with their cast. The icon should in fact have the "activating swirl" around it while being cast and not "grey out" and shrink until that is done.

One of the first characters I made was a speedster; a DM/Reg Scrapper named Oscillator.

He used to have Whirlwind, and I used it a lot when it was KU. He's long since respec'ed out of it, and I never took Flurry. For a while he had a buzzsaw build that didn't include Shadow Maul, but with the buff to DM I switched him back to a build that fit his concept better. I rarely play him any more, and his principal use is to act as the SG leader for our Reserve.

DM works pretty well for a speed concept with power customization. The main exceptions being Touch of Fear and Midnight Grasp. I think SR, Reg or WP are your best bets for a secondary. I'd lean towards /SR today. I took /Reg because it fit my concept of a time-manipulator and was a much, MUCH better set than /SR at that time (I0 that is). Nowdays they're comparable, and for DM I think /SR is better. It also gives you a leg up on high combat mobility (back then movement didn't suppress and I used SS and Teleport in combat).

Aegis: Psi/Mez Res and Force Feedback: Chance for +Rech are procs that grant Set bonuses.
  10. I stuck to one character for a change too. I played a DP/MM Blaster solo (I teamed with an Empath for Carson's Tsoo hunt and that's it) and leveled to 36 doing a run through the Hollows, FL and Croatoa with character maintenance and a side trip to Striga mixed in.

    Mid's problem!

Sounds like it could be a permissions issue. What is the error message that you get? And have you tried a fresh install instead of an update?
  12. Click on the "Team" menu at the top of your Chat Window and it will give you the option to quit the TF.

[Edit:] If you prefer typing to clicking you can simply type "/leaveteam" (not including the quotes, of course).
  13. Well, the DPS should be around 175 (actually, I missed the BU proc in Focus in that calculation and am too lazy to go back and add it in) and the mitigation should be OK for those tasks. END usage... PB uses about 0.12 E/s in this build, the toggles (with Tough off) 0.72 E/s, which leaves 2.95 E/s for attacking. That attack chain uses... 2.90 E/s (2.84 adjusting for the fact that you won't be attacking while PB is activating). You might have to use CP on occasions when you have bad luck with the +END procs (or if you turn on Tough). It looks capable of solo'ing AVs and Pylons to me.
  14. Does Flashback mode count an arc as belonging to everyone on the team as a TF does?

I'm pretty sure the Ouro TFs do, and that they're just using normal Flashback setup, but I've never paid attention to the few times I've used regular Flashback while teaming (I almost always solo those).
  15. My post wasn't a very good one. I just typed what I was thinking instead of adjusting it to be appropriate to yours. I listed that PSU thinking it might work for you too and was wondering if Father Xmas thought it might. Obviously it won't.
  16. It looks like you have some restrictions I don't.

What I did was look at my 12V supply currently and found estimates of the video card's draw both new and old, then looked for a PS that increased my 12V rail by at least that much.

It looks like you've only got that one choice though...
  17. I've been considering a similar upgrade and was looking at this PSU. What's your take on that Father Xmas?
  18. A single target attack with the same attack time would give an additional +5.9% Defiance damage buff over what Melt Armor does (which gives a normal AoE buff of +4.0%). That's only around a 2.5-3% increase in Damage since you're already going to be over 200% base thanks to slotting and other Defiance buffs.

It also only last 9s, but assuming you have such an attack available then it has a 100% up time versus Melt Armor's 20% base. And even that assumes you can use all 40s of the MA debuff - that is all of it versus all of the targets for 40s. That's just not going to happen. It's unlikely many, if any, target is going to survive for more than 25s. Most will be down in less than 15s. So the effective up time of Melt Armor is probably less than 10% of base Recharge except in AV and EB fights. The very place you want to use single-target attacks. In an AV fight the cost of using an AoE in your attack chain is about the same (-2.5%) as the buff from using a very well-slotted Melt Armor regularly (+2.5%).

The closer you look, the worse the Blaster Melt Armor appears.

Thought I would grab bonfire and melt armor but i don't have any experience with either one.
I would welcome some relevant input.
What are the ranges like on those two?
Is the Melt armor De-buff serious on AVs and EBs?
    Is Char better than Bonfire?
Tune in next week, same blast time, same blast channel.
    Oh, and thanx.
Char is better than Bonfire, especially with Tesla Cage already available and Power Boost to make the Hold last. Bonfire is an OK filler power if you don't have slots to spare, and if you're a non-flier it can be useful for a range only Blaster, but it really isn't a frequent use power and fast foes such as Crey Power Tanks or Warwolves often run right through it between ticks. It also has a 3.3s cast (Arcana-sec that is), so it doesn't make a great power to use when in trouble.

Also, Elect/En is definitely a build that benefits from using melee; both to give a good single-target attack chain and to use the Power Boost+Short Circuit combo to sap stuff. So Bonfire doesn't have a particularly good synergy (though Power Thrust is good for sending stuff back to the right side of the bonfire).

Melt Armor does a piddly -9.75% Res. AVs are about the only place where I think it might be worth anything at all. Most of the time the -Res is less useful than the 1.7s or so that it takes to cast. It ups damage if DPS * (fight time + 1.7s)

  21. The clipboard is just temporary storage for the Operating System. You can view what is on it, but you really don't need to. Just use Ctrl+V on Windows systems (I believe it's Command+V on Macs).

If you really want to view the contents on Windows you can run the clipboard viewer that ships with iy by using the "Run..." option from the Start menu and typing in "%windir%\System32\clipbrd.exe" or right-clinking on the desktop creating a shortcut that points to that program (%windir% is a system variable that points to the directory where Windows is installed).
  22. Use the export options in the Import/Export menu at the top. Use the Official Forums (vBulletin) Formatting Code (select that in window on the top right of the Export dialog).

I usually use Orange and click the boxes for "Export Data Chunk if..." and "Export Data Chunk as well..." and typically the "Export Bonus Totals".

Once you've done that the data is on your clipboard. Paste it using the normal procedure for your browser and OS (typically Ctrl+V).

Preview it and mess with the settings till it looks good to you.
  23. If you have a -Jump power and a narrow doorway you can block his path, but it's far from fool proof. Best to bring a Dom or a couple of people with Immob powers.
  24. The ability of all NPC teleporters to 'port to locations that are out of their line-of-sight.
  25. I have an Elect/Inv/Body build that ports pretty straight forward to Spines.

The design goals were 60% Rech for pseudo-perma DP, 37% S/L Def (soft cap with 8 in range for Invinc), 250% Reg and at least 2.5 END/s surplus over toggles.

You'd need to reorder powers for Spines. The only set that really has to be replaced is the Chain Induction slotting with whatever you put in Impale. Decimations for the +Rech might be a good swap. END use might require swapping the Oblits out of Quills. Maybe 3 Eradications and 3 Cleaving Blows for some E/N Def. The Kismet in CJ turned out to be a bit of overkill with the 6 9% Acc bonuses and Invincibility. Oh, the FF +Rech proc won't go in Throw Spines, but it's not a big deal anyway. Even a Range IO would probably be fine there. The 2 Hecatombs in Charged Brawl were added in place of a Mako proc and CI A/D/E to get the DPS up high enough to overcome AV Regen. Though even with that this build isn't going to be solo'ing Pylons or anything. It's a pretty costly build too, as even without the Hecas it was around 900M.
