  1. Have you seen some of the bases people have made? I'm pretty sure wiping all current bases would result in quite a few long time players simply quitting the game, never to return.

Take this for example (from a quick google images search):

Yeah, I'm pretty sure more time was put into that base than most 50s.

It can carry a connotation of age, but is often used with no regard to age. Hell, the only person I've ever known to call other people "kiddo" was younger than me... and called me "kiddo" as well. I'd say it's far more likely to carry a connotation of implying you're less experienced, than actual age. And even then, it can be used merely as a term of endearment, with nothing more implied.

When a term can be used multiple ways, why are you intentionally choosing the one way that it could conflict with your RP? You're a creature of indeterminate age/93 year old man/jello-o/etc being called "kiddo" by some youngish punk soldier type... obviously she wasn't implying you were younger than her.

I'm pretty sure he means an NPC group (like the Malta group), not a SG.
  4. Hello Malta.

    (and several other groups)

Considering Twinshot's personality, I'm pretty sure she'd be much more likely to call a 93 year old "kiddo" than a 12 year old... especially if she thinks it'd bug them.
  6. Listen, kiddo, just because someone calls you "kiddo" doesn't mean they're saying anything about your age.

(see what I did there? )

In all seriousness, kiddo != young. It can be used that way, or it can be used the same as any other term like it.

To make this explicit: Even a completely free account has access to City of Villains.

Is it that you made a Hero character, and you can't take that Hero to the rogue isles? Because Heroes can't travel there. Vigilantes, Rogues, and Villains have access. Likewise, Villains can't access Paragon City, because only Heroes, Vigilantes, and Rogues have access.

Using the alignment system, you can turn your Hero into a Vigilante (and then a Villain, and then a Rogue, and then back to a Hero if you so desire).

Alternatively, is your issue is actually that you can't click the "Going Rogue" button on the character creator? If so, when you bought Going Rogue, did you actually create a game account then or only download the game via Steam?

So, City of Heroes performs a hell of a lot worse than it should. Just look at World of Warcraft, which ALWAYS plays better than City of Heroes despite it being Blizzard's first MMO and Cryptic and NCSoft having made many more.
You would think "experienced developers" would have the better performing program, but that is definitely not the case with City of Heroes.
And no, you can't argue it was because of increased funds available, at least not before launch. Cryptic likely had more resources and making a program run as good as possible is essential to making as much money as possible.
    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

    Oh, wait, you were serious?

So here's the deal. Cryptic Studios first game was City of Heroes. They weren't "experienced developers". Not in the MMO space, not in any space. They would have also had very limited funds available to them (being, you know, a start up with no product).

Now, lets take a look at Blizzard. While it's true that WoW was their first MMO... you kind of go completely off the path at this point. Blizzard has had a very long history of making games. They've also had some... lets just say, "hits". They made Starcraft, which has been incredibly popular (there's a joke that it's Korea's national sport... knowing a few Korean nationals... I'm not sure if it's a joke). They made the Diablo series, which has also been a very popular RPG with a huge online component (not "massively", but definitely MORPG). And, there's also... you know... Warcraft. Warcraft was huge before World of Warcraft, with Warcraft 3 / TFT. They also had many other games (check out their WP article!).

So Blizzard had the experience (including in online RPGs!), and they definitely had the money. They also had an already-existing rabid fanbase, which catapulted WoW to completely transform the MMO market from 'niche' to 'mainstream'.

So, what is it you were saying?

(fyi, I installed Oblivion recently... seeing as the box is still on my desk even... it looks like garbage in comparison to CoH)
  9. Personally... I've always figured the Devs intentionally would let some stuff slip through. It's a good way to do viral marketing (at least within the CoX community). Of course, the downside being if they accidentally let leak something that they're still unsure about and just toying with or things like that.

Although, seeing as it's the i23 beta, now doesn't seem like the right time to bet letting things "leak" because we've got lots of info from the beta itself.

    That's awesome!

You're completely correct. It's been... at least a half dozen issues since they made the change.
  11. Sounds like an oversight if I ever heard of one!

Yeah, I was going, if anything, for the exact opposite, that it's easy to rationalize basically any origin if you're willing to be even slightly flexible with either your concept, or your definition of the origin.

The handle is wrapped in the finest animal hide that you could find in your county, giving you better grip (as compared to nothing), and thus better contol (aim).

The edge was sharpened by the local blacksmith to be... sharper... allowing you to slice objects better.

Your armor includes a belt loop that you can put your sheath through, allowing you to easily draw the sword.

In other words, 'yes' to all. My point, though, was asking what switches a human over from being 'natural' to 'tech'. Using a large stick as a blunt object, at one point in time, was the most brilliant idea any human had ever had... but now no one would think of a person carrying around a stick they found outside as a "tech" hero. In other words, the divide between "tech" and "natural" is "whatever the hell the person wants it to be"!
  14. Random list of reasons why this is a bad idea:
1.) Server mergers are a sign a game is dying (it'll be horrible PR for CoH)
2.) Some people like low population servers
3.) There's several high population servers, each with up to 48 character slots
4.) Name clashes. If I become "Kitsune Knight_1", I'm going to personally stab you, and every other person that has suggested this
5.) What do you do with the people that have more characters on the combined server than the maximum slots? If you're going to merge servers A & B, and I've got 25+ characters (or even slots) on both servers... are some going to just vanish? Are you going to raise the character count (if you do, then what's the point?)
6.) VIPs get free server transfers (random aside: do those stack continually? I can't recall...)
7.) Because you used the shades icon (every time, always the same icon!)
8.) It would take a massive amount of work, for questionable return

And those are just off the top of my head!

    Edit:

50... doesn't that number seem awfully round to you? Several issues back, the Devs modified the search window to not show how many (unhidden) players weren't shown like it used to. So all you can conclude is there's at least 50 non hidden players currently on blueside... there might be 50, or there might be 50,000.

Pondering about what the future holds is half the fun!
  16. Yep, it must be bought (then again, it might be a VIP-only set, and it's not yet flagged... or it could still be in testing, and someone hit the wrong flag for it!).

I really hope they don't limit us by the selected origin. Like was already said, lots of characters cross over in origin. Hell, my AR/Dev Blaster I created as "natural", because I didn't consider any of the tech to anything special (if you run around with a sword, does that make you tech? :P).

This is not the sort of entertainment I'm interested in, and I don't much care for the kind of entertainment I AM interested in being painted as somehow inferior.
And I'm pointing out we've gotten the kind of stories you like in spades, and nothing else for around eight years. Getting something different is a good thing.
  18. Great, now I gotta reinstall the beta client...
  19. Screenshots or it didn't happen!
  20. From my little investigation into the inner workings of Hero Stats, it actually reads the network data being sent to/from the server to gather the data. Not something incredibly easy to reproduce... but, since the source is open (and in a .Net language), you could build upon that (I don't think Hero Stats has anything like a plugin mechanism).
  21. Funny, I would have considered the "dork age" to be pretty much the entire history of comics.

So, if I'd just stayed in bed and let Malaise kill her, would anything have been different?
And this is the way you can describe 99% of the content as a Villain. You do something, and, nothing changes. Nothing you do matters, because it's just magically reverted. There should be give and take. It shouldn't just be all about maintaining the status quo.

If you played through the SSA as a Villain, you would have been working with Malaise to shatter her mind. You beat up Johnny to record the song for you. You plant the tape that screws with everyone's mind. Then, you go into her mind to break her. And, shockingly enough, you somewhat succeed.

Yeah, this. There's a huge number of stories in the game. A huge number are... kinda crappy (I'm looking at you, old blueside launch content!). But a lot are very good, and often little known.
  24. I'm big on Tech / Magic / Natural. I go by whatever is the biggest source of their abilities.

A huge percentage of my characters are natural in origin, simply because they do what they do largely via their own natural abilities. They may or may not have some tech toys or magical artifacts, but those are don't make the hero, they're just accessories.

My latest character is Tech origin. This one definitely fit, oh so naturally. A Street Juices / Energy Aura Stalker, named Ada of Lovelace. I'll leave the rest as an exercise to the reader.

I've never been fond of either mutant or science origin. Both seem rather lame to me.
