As was said a few times, the 'activation' features of Vista/7 are also in Windows XP. You're already getting to enjoy them (unless you have a 'volume license' copy... which means you likely just pirated it), except, from every account I've read, a much harsher version. I've been running Vista/7 for years, and yet to notice the activation except upon the very first install. Unlike XP.
Quote:People were talking about you choosing Windows XP 64 bit edition. The horrible bastardization of a Windows Server variant, that was largely DoA because it wasn't shipped by virtually anyone (certainly not on a consumer system), and had horrible driver support. According to Valve's Steam Hardware Survey, Windows XP 64bit has less than half the number of users of OS X Snow Leopard... That's not even the current version of OS X! Mind you, to upgrade to the latest version is a grand total of $20, and can be done with just a few clicks of the mouse (it can be bought in the Mac App Store, downloaded, and installed very quickly).Um what? Buy an upgrade copy of Win7 Premium. Partition my new drive. Install 7 in one partition. Done. At least according to the instructions on dual-booting I've found. Doesn't sound all that expensive or painful to me.
And that's presuming I even get Win7.
That is what people were talking about as a bad idea. And, personally, I'd still recommend against installing Windows 7 into a second partition. I've done that in the past (with prior versions of Windows), and there's a lot of software that does not expect that and will freak out (because virtually no one does that). Swapping the HDs, IMO, is a far better testing solution, as it'll let you avoid any incompatibilities.
Where 'game' is 'game by company that has paid $MANUFACTURER (Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo) a huge amount of money, gone through a very lengthy/arbitrary approval process, and then laced the game with absurd amounts of DRM'. You can't run any game unless explicitly approved by $MANUFACTURER, or any other software. You might not realize it, but all modern consoles are just general purpose computers (the PS3 was even advertised as such!), laced with huge amounts of DRM. Actually, scratch 'modern', consoles were general purpose computers since their birth, just laced with DRM a few generations after their birth.
From the rest of your description, it doesn't sound like you have any problems with DRM itself, just poorly functioning functionality. You'll get DRM either way, except consoles just ensure you can't avoid it. -

Every one of my Stalkers would take this pool. Even if they did zero damage. Of course, Stalkers wouldn't get this pool, just like they didn't get Shields and Titan Weapons... -
Mind you, this is how all crash nukes work (at least ones I've checked, which is most Blaster nukes and the Warshade nuke).

Quote:If you had been VIP for more than a year (seeing as you first registered for the forums in '06, that seems likely) you'd have more than just 2 slots. I had about 14 slots on my home server, and several 'global' slots while I was Preem.i agree also about freedom not really being free, if the devs. could at least allow IOs to be used by everyone or at least premiums then that would really make it work, i tried going premium for a while but in less then a week i hated it, only able to use 2 characters and all my IOs were grey out, it was a terrible experiance and there needs to be more freedom for freedom/premium players
As has been said countless times, IOs weren't added to the game till many years after it came out. None of the content in the game is balanced around you having them, they aren't necessary at all. Plus, every character over, IIRC, 10, can simply swap to a second build, which you could use as your 'SO' build.
FYI, IOs can be used by Premiums, if you're far enough along in the Paragon Rewards. When I drop to Preem, there's not too many things I lose access to (the base 12 slots per server, incarnates, and a couple powersets basically).
Freedom has been a major boost to Subscribers/VIPs, by giving them far more stuff for the same cost (along with the flexibility of deciding what they want).
Freedom has also been a major boost to those unsubscribed. You know, being able to play the game at all -
Inertia.
Plus, on Freedom, you don't have to wade through the bodies of the ERPers -
Quote:SC still has activity on Freedom (and maybe Virtue), but PVP has only been in decline since the revamp in, what, 2008?
1) PVP
Quote:2) Redside
Quote:3) Rogues and Vigilantes
Quote:4) Skull guy?
Praetoria (gold side) has some really good story arcs, unfortunately it makes red side look like blue during double XP weekend. It's basically 1-20 (you can't leave until 20), although First Ward (20-30) is open to all and takes place in Praetoria. Night Ward (30-35) is coming with Issue 23, and will also take place in Praetoria, and is open to all as well.
All the Incarnate Trials so far take place in Praetoria as well. Issue 23 is supposed to be largely the conclusion to the Praetorian Invasion storyline... which should mean The Coming Storm will be arriving not too far after. -
A nice thing about Thugs/ and Demons/ (maybe also necro, haven't bothered to check) is they can slot all the pet aura procs, including the recharge intensive pet procs. This means all your pets would have an additional 25% defense to all, and 30% resistance to all (with the non-catalyzed 2nd MM ATO proc, probably at least 35% res to all with the catalyzed version).
With a secondary like /Traps, that means all your pets would be softcapped to everything, even if they have zero innate defense (Bots/ have the bubbles they cast). I'd lean more towards Demons/ in that case, since they grant res shields, which wouldn't be wasted against the majority of enemies (ones that don't have +tohit or -defense).
Of course, once you have enough survivability that you're not struggling to survive, any additional survivability is likely coming at the expense of increased performance. -

Quote:Windows XP has the exact same restricts. Vista/7 is less anal in this regard. I didn't see any of the reviews you were talking about, just a bunch of positive reviews and the usual occasional nut job.
As to the locking on OEM/System Builder, go look up some of the reviews on Amazon. I'd rather not tempt fate by purchasing one only to find out that if a hard drive dies, I'm out that money for the OS.
Quote:I will not support gaming companies that are actively trying to destroy my rights.
Hell, Sony deserves an extra special insult here, with marketing the PS3 as being able to run Linux, then retroactively striping out support (from the pre-slim models) just weeks after they made an official statement that they weren't going to remove the support! Hard to top that. -
Windows XP 64 bit edition is simply an awful idea.
Support is nearly over, it's not actually XP (it's a modded Server 2003), and it has crappy driver compatibility. It's basically the worst of all worlds.
And as was stated, if you object to PC gaming due to DRM, then you shouldn't even touch console gaming (the DRM on consoles makes Steam & co look like open source software by comparison). -
I wouldn't really recommend dual booting... there isn't a whole lot of benefit to it, and its tended to be a bit messy in my experience.
What I would do, though, is pull out your current hard drive, and put the 'new' 1TB drive in as the primary master (or SATA 0, since the system probably isn't that old). Then, install Windows 7 on it.
That way, you'd have a totally clean install. You can then install all your programs and test them out. If everything works fine (I'd imagine it would, but never can be totally sure till you try), you can then plug in your old hard drive as a secondary drive.
You can then pull the files from it at your liesure.
Quote:It really isn't. Home Premium is actually quite a good option, having pretty much all the features most everyone (for values of 'everyone' that isn't equal to 'enterprise') would want.I could get Professional for about $20 more than Premium. Would that be worth it? -
I want Sam's + Thirty-Seven's versions.
The damage might need tweaking down, but only if the cast time is brought down massively (5 seconds is absurd... 9 seconds is simply insane). I'd really like it to have an animation similar to Caltrops, except with a second or so of fiddling first (giving it ~2 seconds cast time). That'll give you ~4 seconds between activation and first possible detonation for Trip Mine.
As for the OP: The penalties are far too big IMO. 25 base damage for trip mine? I also think it'd work better to use the excusive mechanic (as is used by some SoA powers), so you could pick either the fast or slow version of each, but not both. Still, I don't think /devices needs extra compromises. -
I've been playing on both Freedom and Virtue quite a bit.
Freedom has for the longest been my home server, but the (interacting) population is definitely down quite a bit, along with all my globals being virtually dead (I double checked to make sure I was still in all of them and with them on tabs!).
Virtue feels more like Freedom used to back in the day. Atlas always has a fair number of people, and I regularly see stuff forming (unlike Freedom, where I can go afk in AP 1 for 30 minutes and come back and see zero broadcasts/requests).
I've actually been thinking of transferring my Warshade over... I'm definitely tempted.
(Freedom's decline was also years after i13... claiming it happened then is just silly) -
I'd say Home Premium.
Professional's extra features are targeted at business/enterprise users. Encrypted File System might be desirable for some users, but I'd not trust it for too much (I'd much sooner trust TrueCrypt). There's also Windows XP Mode, but VirtualPC kinda sucks *** (I'd rather run even VirtualBox...). It can use a theoretical max of 192 GB of ram... but building a system with > 16GB ram isn't exactly... common.
IMO, pretty much everyone that buys Ultimate is completely wasting their money (unless you use MUI... but the number of people doing that has to be very small).
Edit: 64 bits, of course. No point in upgrading if you stay 32 bits. -
Did that seriously just happen? I thought that sort of thing only happened in poorly written movies and fan fic? Dx

Please also post a HiJack This report. It's quite possible that some third party piece of software is interfering with CoH.

Quote:Marvel didn't need a case to do serious harm to Cryptic/NC. They could have tied them up in court for years, wrapping them up in red tape out the wazoo, draining them dry from the massive legal fees. And I wouldn't really call it frivolous, there was quite a reasonable chance Marvel would have won. Trademark law also requires paranoia on the part of the holder, so it's also partly required behavior.the cowardice of NC caving in the face of Marvel's frivolous lawsuit notwithstanding.
If Cryptic had tried to fight it, CoH likely wouldn't exist anymore. -
Quote:That's how it came off to me as well. There's pretty much only one possible result of making a comment like that to someone... and apparently that's not the first time he's made a comment like that. The GMs will handle things however they see fit when these things are reported. But it looks to me like you were picking a fight.
If you're trying to warn new players, you need to make sure it doesn't contain snark.
I think what the GMs do currently is working well enough. The obvious copyright infringements get genericed quickly enough, and that's pretty much all that's necessary to keep themselves protected. Mind you, I've never had a character genericed in all my years playing and rolling alts, so I'm not trying to protect myself or anything. -
The number of erase cycles has actually been remaining steady with the last generation shrink. It's also influenced by the quality of the process.
There's also quite a number of different ways to boost the longevity even at a given number of erase cycles... the companies investing countless dollars into this tech wouldn't be doing so if they thought it had five years left before it hit an insurmountable wall. -
Don't try to map to tray slots, simply bind to the powers themselves:
/bind k powexecname Brawl
Then it won't matter where you throw the power icon. There's quite a lot to binds/slash commands, you can find fairly detailed info on ParagonWiki. -
Eh, yeah, you're right now that I think about it. I just remember playing for so many years with the scroll wheel only scrolling things by one pixel at a time (IIRC, pohsyb added the ability to adjust the scroll rate... but mine didn't get set to the new default of 20 automagically) that I instinctively think it doesn't work at all.
-
At the very least, I noticed "BabylonToolbar" in the list of BHOs... that's a known piece of adware. I'd suggest installing MalwareBytes and/or Spybot: Search & Destroy and do a full scan of your system.
The only two other things that stand out to me are ESET and McAfee. I've not heard of their "Smart Security" suite (and finding information on it was surprisingly hard), and McAfee is well known for being utter trash... either of which could be causing problems. -
I'd prefer they just make it so that two more servers could fit on the screen at once. There's a lot of space that could be utilized for the expanded selection box. At least the scroll wheel works on them (one of the few places in the game it works!).

Make sure "Only show free costumes" is not checked. There's been many reports of it causing owned items to not show up.
I haven't purchased the capes unlock, yet I can still see them in the costume creator (I just can't use them till I unlock them in-game).
Edit: Too slowWhile you can't use the in-game /petition (i.e. "live" support) as a preem/freem, you should still be able to use the support website.
-
Quote:The capes should always show up if you don't have that checkbox clicked to hide purchasable items. Do they still have the paragon market button on them? If not, then you've got them unlocked. If they don't show up at all, something else might be going on (or you've got the checkbox checked, which doesn't always work wonderfully well).
It took my points and gave me nothing.
