Quote:It wouldn't be unusual to think that they'd try to get a good sample of the entire player base. First get the people that are good at testing/reporting bugs, especially the ones that have worked well with the devs in the past. Once you have the core testers, then you can pick little samples from across the board, including the people that have never reported a bug/been on the TR before.Thing is, that's just not true. I've had friends in previous closed betas who not only hadn't ever posted on the forums, but had also never installed the test server... I doubt they'd ever reported a single bug. At the same time, had other friends who has been in the game longer, frequently went on test, frequented the forums, and reported bugs every time they saw them... and they did not get in.
My theory? They're picking some people at random just to mess with us so we have no idea what their methods are.
Then again, they might be doing something different now. Who knows. Just looking forward to being able to poke around for myself.
I would be quite shocked if the devs used a 'purely random' or 'entirely hand picked' list of players. There's going to be some that are hand picked, because they've shown themselves to be useful, and then some that are randomly selected to hopefully try and smash the game in new and unique ways. -
I assume by 'avi' you mean an mpeg-2 video in an avi container? If so, MediaCoder (free, open source, available on SF.net) should work fine for that, and doesn't include any watermarks or any of that junk. I've used it quite a bit to encode loads of mpeg-2/avi videos into h264 video files... the reverse should work fine as well.

After a patch was rushed out that caused an easy DoS attack, exactly what you wanna do is come out with a new patch as fast as possible without bothering to go through Q/A. Yeah, I can't see any problems with that.

Quote:Except the person I was responding to that thought that NoScript blocked PHP because a prior poster said a 'PHP script'.
Yes, but no one was confused about that.
Quote:However the most a server side 'script' can to is prompt the user for an action.
Saying that a server side 'script' can't infect you is a bit silly. Less likely? Sure. But no where near the impossible that you keep trying to claim. -
That's a false assumption. If there's a node somewhat close to NCSoft's servers (but still not under their control, could be their ISP, or even their ISP's ISP) that's already crapping out, it's quite reasonable to assume that when there's greatly increased traffic going through it, that it'd have even worse performance, resulting in more issues.

Those sites don't list vulnerabilities. They list publicly disclosed vulnerabilities. There's a massive difference between the two.
Those sites won't list any vulnerabilities that are unknown.
Those sites won't list any vulnerabilities that Mozilla Corp/Foundation knows about and is sitting on until they fix them (they'll only release the information once they fix it or if they believe it's being actively exploited in the wild).
Those sites won't list any vulnerabilities that are known only by the black hats.
Those sites also won't list any vulnerabilities that they weren't told about. It's not unusual for a bug to be fixed without realizing the bug could have allowed possible remote code execution.
And I only mentioned libjpeg as an extremely nasty and rather high profile example from a while back where something that had nothing to do with Javascript/Flash/Silverlight/Java/etc caused arbitrary code execution. -
Quote:That's what's called a vulnerability. Bugs with Firefox's JavaScript implementation are by far the most common (just look at their bugzilla, looks like they average 5+ JS vulnerabilities that have to be fixed with each release), but they aren't the only ones. Just recently there was a bug with how Firefox handled text, potentially leading to a remote code execution vulnerability on both OS X (CoreGraphics) and Linux (pango). It's also quite common for bugs to be discovered in the image-processing libraries firefox uses (I remember a particularly nasty vulnerability in (iirc) libjpeg a while back which impacted all browsers (that could handle images) on Windows, OS X, and Linux). It still doesn't make sense, someone had to click on something, the most PHP can do is send a prompt for a download or upload, it can't do it automatically or arbitrarily.
But whatever..
JavaScript/Flash/Java/Silverlight/etc aren't the only ways for your system to get infected. NoScript isn't a panacea. -
In case you didn't know, PHP is a server side scripting language. NoScript does NOT (and can not) do anything about that, it can only disable client side scripts(+plugins).
NoScript doesn't protect you against attacks that don't depend on third party plugins (such as Flash) or JavaScript (such as one that exploits a flaw in their handling of jpegs). -
Quote:It would, depending on how exactly CoX handles full-screen mode (and actually, it'd likely cause a minor spike if it's re-enabling itself right when you're checking it).
Unless of course it reactivated as soon as I tabbed out of CoX.
Quote:Quite frankly, disabling it has had no ill effects, and therefore I deem it completely unnessecary to have. -

First off, if you have a nice amount of ram (say, 2GB) I highly recommend against disabling super fetch, as it does decrease load times for programs (although there's a temporary slowdown on a new system while it's still initializing and learning).
Secondly, if you have a decent video card, you're better off leaving the Desktop Window Manager enabled, because it'll improve the performance of most normal applications (they'll be rendered by the GPU instead of very slowly by the CPU), as well as prevent windows from having to repaint themselves if you move a window above them. DWM also automatically disables itself when it detects a full-screen application running, so it shouldn't actually cause a decrease in performance.
But, for systems that only meet the minimum requirements some things that might normally improve performance can often be counter productive, so it can't hurt to try and see. -
It can take quite a while to download the game (it's just under 3 gigs in size). You really don't need that fast of a connection to play the game, so I wouldn't worry about that... it just generally takes a while to download.

Quote:You can only bind it with ` via a bind file (since the game mangles them in the chat window it seems). Also, there were no patches to the game between when I used my old system and the new one, so I doubt that's the cause. I'm fairly certain it's something specific with this new laptop... but exactly what I'm not sure... maybe I should try killing all the asus utilties and trying again, it's always possible that one of them is mangling the keycode, causing CoX to not appropriately processes it (at least in the bind buffer, but not in the chat buffer...).Weird. I have a popmenu bound to TILDE on a few of my characters, and it works just fine. I remember attempting to bind it to ` and not having it work...
Maybe it got changed recently, and won't accept new binds as ` but will let old binds using ` as the 'name' work?
Edit: Also, just to be clear, this isn't only impacting new binds. It's impacting all the prior binds I setup using ` on every character I tried. -
I think the themes could use a few modifications, such as better contrast for threads with new posts (for some reason I have trouble telling if it's bolded or not, especially on the hero side). They could also tweak the theme a little so it's a bit more compact, right now it's a bit spacy. Also, I'm not a huge fan of pictures in signatures... especially the huge *** ones I've already seen a few people with.
All in all, I think it's an improvement... assuming the whole 'it freezes up for minutes at a time' issue is fixed without simply having to wipe half the posts every few days... And the post features randomly failing... And all sections under the 'Brute' section get wiped... and deleting a single post deletes 90% of the following posts... Long as all those problems are gone I'll say it's an improvement
Edit: WOOO! 11,000 posts! And what's with changing profanity to *** instead of [censored]? I miss my [censored] [censorings]! -
I had always used ` in the bind files and that worked perfectly fine on multiple different machines, it's only on this laptop that the key simply seems to be completely ignored by the game's bind system. When trying to debug it I even tried using 'tilde' (which is technically ~, or shift+`) and that wouldn't work either.
As for the drivers being out of date, I simply haven't bothered to update them yet, mostly because the video is working perfectly fine (I'd be rather shocked if it was related... although I'm probably gonna eventually update if nothing else solves it).
I'm tempted to try remap the ` key to something like F13 to see if I can isolate where exactly the problem is... Also would be a good excuse to brush up on my C# to write a program that catches ` and sends an odd key if CoH is the active window...
Quote:Otherwise, I've no idea. I don't use that key for any binds, and unless it's bound by default to something in the game already I wouldn't even think to use it since it's a bit of a stretch for my fingers to easily reach it.. -
Oh right, roadrunner and not comcast
Still doesn't load for me...Oh well, grabbed it another way

Since I moved to a new laptop I've had a problem where the grave accent key (`) wouldn't work in any binds, including ones I'd already setup, as well as trying to bind it in Options (it simply ignores the keypress). I'm on Vista and my keyboard layout is 'US' (so I don't have any deadkeys defined), and it works perfectly fine in every other application I've tried (including opening the console in other games).
Anyone got any suggestions for things I could try? Also, does anyone know a working link to CoH Helper? All the ones I've found just lead to a comcast page that'll never actually open.
(plus, what's with the white pixelated boarder on my faces?)
-
The graphics card in it is rather low end, and it's also an ATI card (nvidia generally works better with CoH/OpenGL). It should be able to play CoH... but it's doubtful it'll run all that well.
-
Could you also post the CoH Helper log, that says some additional information about your system (such as processor and drivers).

No, they are available. You can buy level 10, 15, 20, etc IO recipes at the ticket vendor. You can also of course roll for the salvage. I just checked right now. I honestly never realized you couldn't buy those because I'd just go with IOs.
[/ QUOTE ]
I would like to see a screenshot of what you are talking about then. I have checked both Ticket Vendors in Atlas Park and neither have any common IO options that I can see.
[/ QUOTE ]Common IOs on the ticket vendor... in Atlas Park.
Remember, you have to set your level to a multiple of 5 (because common IOs only drop on multiples of 5). -

Can't you use Tickets to buy the common IOs in place of the DOs?
If there's a workaround... then its priority drops.
[/ QUOTE ]
No, that is not available. If we could use tickets to purchase common IO recipes or common IO's already crafted then yes I would see the missing DO's as a lesser priority. However as it stands, characters level 12-21 using AE are stuck trading their tickets for Training Enhancements.
