    Old pen and paper term.

    Edit Add:

It is basically a code phrase that refers to when a GM makes a unilateral veto of a rule or set of rules to prevent a player action. It is also known as NYMDYD <where the D is dungeon instead of game>

    'Who is Jack?'

He brought us this game, he poured a lot of himself into it, and I've no doubt some of the good things we have are his doing. The problem I had was with his game theory and NIMGYD attitude, he was fixated on the idea that players secretly want to lose. I still remember (though not verbatim) the story about him losing a dozen or so times to a chu-boss in a handheld game and rush he had when he finally beat it and how he wanted to make encounters in CoH exactly like that.

    Time Cards

As silly as it sounds, 7-11 and Wa Wa both have them. Also remember most Nc Soft cards work.
  4. The tool tip on supremacy just says damage will be shared by all henchmen in range in defensive mode will share damage. But it seems half the time they are not sharing damage even though they are less then 10 ft away and in defensive mode. Things that seem to turn off the damage share are giving attack orders <even though I've got it set so they stay in defensive mode> and if they leave and then return into my supremacy range. So what are the true requirements for the shared damage? Do they have to start combat in my supremacy range? Must they not be given attack orders? Ect.
  5. Just because I feel frictions, they did merge the forum servers, I didn't say they merged the game servers.
  6. Yes you can. Info here

The _NA is due to the forum mergers between the North American servers and the European Servers.
  7. I am not looking at the wiki or anything, but I know when I was combing through missions some missions appear later in Ouro then they do on the contacts. It's possible the arc in question is one.

Also I know that I've gotten souvenir in mission arcs I've "Failed" a few red side ones are different if you succeed or not.

    Cosmic Powers!!

To add even if the "cosmic powers" are not off the charts the other problem with them is they are seldom or ever defined. The hook of cosmic powers is that they can do almost anything, if the wielder possesses the imagination and will. How do you fit that into a ridged structure like an MMO?
  10. Right now I'm running the most team unfriendly build I've ever made, a Bots/Storm MM heavily slotted for knock back. I'm having more fun then I've had in a long time, watching people fly around, tossing things to the ground, even keeping EBs and Bosses on their butts. I had an Energy Blaster slotted similarly once, but the amount of chaos I can generate on the MM is unparalleled.
  11. I knew their was a reason I never filled out the bios on my characters between my dyslexia and general lack of ability to write good, I know you'd all just mock me.
  12. I have my exp turned off right now 1 bubble away from 15 as I try to finish two 10-14 contacts, and the level 10-15 mayhem mission.
  13. In a mission <so you don't afk out> you find a mob that cannot beat your resting regen rate but does a good amount of damage, you then rest in front of it and walk away.
  14. Sad thing to me it just sounds like he is regurgitating Max Brooks a Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z, but pretending it's backed by MATHS.
  15. I take it as soon as I can unless there is a "must have" power in the way, which I often find quite rare. Though sometimes I don't take the tier one power till 12, then the travel power at 14.

Of course if you stick with paper and AE missions you can go probably to the level cap with no travel power.

Edit add: Also even under the "normal" play, many people have played to the the level cap with no travel power, though I shudder to think about it.
  16. While I can't say for specifc cards, it is a resonably well documented fact that CoX doesn't like ATI cards.

All of those things are game theory and not business policy.

PSO right off the top of my head, though it didn't have unique names and was all about the items, but on most other points it matches up quite well, fast leveling, action oriented, solo friendly, quick travel times (actually non-existent travel times), and encourages alts up the wazoo. The naming issues has been a part of most MMOs since the first MMO got over 50,000 subscribers. There is a web comic out there called The Noob about an EQ style MMO and the character is sitting in front of his PC trying to find a name for his character after getting ten or so names rejected he says "Oh for f'sake!" and his character ends up with the name "Ohforf". So "every" MMO with more then a small handful of people generates a perceived naming issue. At the one year mark almost every MMO's message board has a thread or two about name purges and most beta boards have a thread or two about solutions to the "naming problem" . This naming problem isn't created by multiple Alts or an Alt friendly game it is created by the nature of Unique names.

Yes they do reserve the right to do whatever they want and one of the things companies with subscription services generally want to do is make it real easy for customers to return, deleting names and accounts makes it difficult for customers to return, thus the industry standard is to not delete names or accounts.

The fact that players generate more characters, AND use more names per account makes the management of this issue more of a priority than for other games.

I am sure at the very least they will run the current script before GR.

I suspect they will assess and modify that script based on profiles of inactive accounts and the amount of names that would be freed up, but wont go too much further than currently as they will want to entice former customers back with the shiny new Box

I am pretty sure they are going to run their script for GR. I would be very surprised if they didn't. The issue I have is a lot of players are gunning to get higher level names targeted, up to and including level 50 characters and the specific argument I was replying to made it sound like name purges are standard operating procedure, which is clearly not the standard business practice of MMOs.

I have no problem with their current purge system heck I think it should be run at least once a year. I also have no problems with purging non-upgraded trial accounts be it every 3, 6, or 12 months. I just think that the names most people are "gunning" for where taking in the first year and held by people above 30 and the current trend is to try to "convince" the dev's to target those names, which as I and others have stated is a bad business practice, more so in light of the fact that a major expansion coming out.

I challenge you to name at least three other MMOs within the past 10 years that have had this "Perceived character naming issue" and purged names.

The truth is, the industry standard is to not purge names or old accounts. The times that it has happened it is due to massive exodus and is usually part of the death throes of said MMO.

I will grant that name purges may also happen for non-paid accounts or non-subscription MMOs, but that is a very different environment. One that is not concerned with re-activation so much as keeping a constant churn in player base to push micro transactions, ad revenue or new box sales.

Of course this ignores the fact that the Dev's stated after the very first name purge that very few names rolled over and most of the ones that did where in the under 6 category.

I'd kinda like to keep the name he's HAD for the entire 33 months of his existence.
Then perhaps you should have KEPT him on the server he had for the entire 33 months of his existence. You moved the character and created the problem, not the person who was using the same name you where using, regardless of if their account is canceled, they are taking a break or in some other way indisposed. Maybe it also would have been a good idea to make sure the name was available before you transferred the character.

As my old editor used to tell me, "Failure to prepare on your part should not constitute an emergency on my part." Just substitute "my" with "Devs" or "Other players".

To be perfectly honest, I wouldn't expect my character to even still be there, much less have the name available.

I tried WOW about 5 years ago, I have considered going back and giving it a try again. If I do so, and my character is not there, or the character is there but the name is gone, I am not petty enough to quit just because of that. I was raised to work for everything I have and to appreciate what I have. I am not entitled to anything but my freedom to do what I want, to make my own choices.

Maybe you won't but I would. I know the name of all my WoW characters, EQ characters, Horizon characters, Auto Assault characters, Tabula Raza Characters, iRO characters, PSO characters, EvE characters, SWG characters. . . I am also pretty sure that all the way up to the date those games go down for good my characters will still be there. Most MMOs have recuriting pushes and advertise the fact that your characters are waiting for you. Heck EvE at one point sent me an E-Mail from my most played character complete with stats and an invitation for a free weekend. Name purges really are bad business choices for MMOs, because far more players will be driven away if they find out their characters have been modified then will quit over frustration that they can't get a name. Sure some games may end up with characters like Ohforf but people will still play.

Also there are lots of names floating around, I got Cattleya on Virtue for my plant controller, sure I couldn't get Phalaenopsis, Orchid or Dendrobium, but Miltonia, Orchidaceae, and Catasetum are all available.
  22. I tend to be more likely to play what I wish I could be.

Of course this is scary because I tend to play goal orientated chibi's.

<Being a little shy of six feet, 200lbs and ADD makes the above pretty impossible.>
  23. Like so many things, I just ignore Twitter.

Honestly there is nothing the Devs could possibly twit about, that I care enough to read, that won't be regurgitated on these boards in one form or another.
  24. For me up to 12 I just slot what I find, then at 13 I run off do the IO tutorial grab my free IO, spend way to much Inf filling out my IOs in an 2 hour period, then plot out my IOs then I just fill out my IOs as a level till 32 when I upgrade everything to 35 IOs, then just fill them out as a I level again. Though I do it that way because I don't like seeing my enhancements red out, there is just something counter intuitive to the idea of "hey I just leveled and now I'm weaker!"

You know I used to work in an art store matching paint colors for people who brought in 10 year old lead miniatures. After a while you just stop arguing with them that "No that is not violator purple, but it is eggplant with a gun metal dry wash." and just hand them the five year old bottle violator purple.
