This has been one of the most interesting threads I've ever read on these boards, and I'm thrilled that there are other players out there that are still as interested and involved with the game's canon and lore as I am. I may not find any RP opportunities anymore, but it's great when you can build a character that fits with the game and have a good understanding of where they sit in it.
I think the questions I have about canon are the ones that no one wants to answer because it kind of points out how badly our game suffers from ADD.
Who Empowered Romulus? It wasn't just some random Nictus, so who was it? Doesn't Imperious allude to continuing conflict on that front?
Why were the khelds (probably the most significant experience of the human race and planet earth, contact with entities from ANOTHER GALAXY) just sidelined and aside from TS, who is a convoluted mess and disaster, never mentioned again?
These are just personal gripes I suppose, as I would much, much MUCH rather have seen the kheldian conflict be the focus of some of the endgame's raidgrind hamster wheel than the Praetoria thing which it doesn't seem like anyone wanted, was interested in, or cared about even when it began. I would love to have seen the focus on khelds bring about a complete teardown and rebuild of the kheldian EAT to correct the nightmarish horror they are and bring them in line with functional and completed ATs.
That, and the Nemesis thing. Exactly what is Nemesis now, anyway? -
Quote:The only troller powers that will be hit hard by the proc changes are the AoE Immos. You can still make uber proc builds. For me the best Primary for proc abuse is Plant and for secondaries /Storm
If you want pets try /Storm. You have psuedo pets but don't have to worry about them dying or agroing stuff.
I have a high end (and I mean high end) Plant/Storm build if you want an idea of the kinda of firepower I am talking about: Perma Hasten, Procced up ST/AoEs, Mez protection, Incarnate ranged softcap, etc.
Umm yes please? -
Quote:The above is the correct response and attitude. It delivers the same amount of dedication to the lore that the development team did. They didn't care, I guess we shouldn't either?
"The ONE thing I want to know": Why do I bother?
The lore is SO screwed up, inconsistent, and sometimes directly conflicting,
that I don't think it's even possible to make coherent sense of it anymore.
I used to enjoy the lore...but it jumped the shark a long time ago.
At best, I find these days that I can only look at small pieces (like a short story),
and deliberately ignore trying to fit them sensibly into the bigger (ripped, torn, and
moth-eaten) tapestry that is the Game's Lore these days...
YMMV.

Thanks for the advice and especially for the build. I'm not really used to working with controllers, and I'm hearing things about how the devs are going break procs and disallow useful builds that rely on them or something. Hopefully that's not going to happen for a while, because this build looks like a lot of fun.
What do I want to solo?
Itrials.
Well not really. But everything else I can manage to. GMs, AVs, etc etc. I can do that with most of my toons, but they largely focus on an entirely different playstyle. My experience and understanding of control toons is obviously lacking, and I wanted to experience as much of it as I could.
The build above has that idiotic robot spider in it, and I hate those things with the intensity of a thousand stars, so I'm going to see if I can find a way to get the same benefit with a different pick. To me the arachnos pets are fail, fail, fail. I hate being forced into an Arachnos pigeonhole if I want a pet. -
Wow. Did I do something stupid or the build just so bad no one has the heart to break it to me?
-
Hi there, just like the title says. I was trying to build a plant/dark that could do enough damage to solo. This look like it would work? And if not, can you recommend what fixes I need to make to it? It's a variation of a build I found on this board but without the mace pet (kind of hate most of the arachnos pets).

Thanks you guys, I really appreciate it. I guess as far as concepts go, I was aiming for the old Jessica/Firestar kind of theme, but as you have already pointed out, this combination is much better suited for melee range. As I've already got a toon that kicks major *** at the melee cap with this set, guess I'll have to shelf the concept.
It was just an idea I guess, but I'm grateful to you for slapping me upside the head with reality.
So then... ON TO REWORKING MY FORT! MUAHAHHAHAHHAh -
Hey all,
Been back a few weeks now, tried out my SJ/WP scrapper (IN LOVE), tried out a few builds for Dark/Dark dom (Thematically WIN, kind of meh for efficiency and damage, but still in LOVE), and now I'm trying to restore an old project that frustrated the hell out of me.
I'm trying to build a viable ranged def capped rad/fire blaster. Don't really care what EPP he has, just really need to get him built, I'm approaching that stage in his levelling life where I need to start thinking about his finalized build. I'm not going to post what I have so far (because it's embarrassing), and I've got a previous build for his sets for capped melee def, (which, give the number of AOEs and PBAOES, really, really worked). But for thematic reasons, I kind of wanted him to be a ranged version.
Anyone had any luck with this? Please, (begs) pleased post a build or two!
Thanks for your help you guys. -
And made the changes you suggested, although I did still finagle the def cap out of it. Having that Midnight Grasp slotted as well as the life tap power makes a world of difference in an attack chain, you were dead on with that. Thanks for your help mate, cheers.
-
Ok, going to take another look here tonight. Actually slotted him already, figure no one was interested, but it won't hurt to slot out his second build and see which one I like better. BTW, I've only been back a short time, how do you get this 'dom' set?
-
I guess I should also state the goals of the build, which are ranged defense and perma dom, as they are not a given for everyone. Sorry about that, and again, thanks for your help.
-
Hello again folks!
Been gone a while trying out a host of other games. lol, a lot of them. Couldn't figure out why they all seemed to fall short of CoH, since outdated and clunky graphics are such a turn off for me. After a few months, realized it was the system. The base system of how characters are built on this game may have its' quirks, but over all it is rock solid. I came back about a week ago and haven't regretted it for a second. Actually re-upped my account after I saw the incredible changes to Dark Astoria and was told the Praetoria arc was finally, mercifully over.
Since then, I've been back in bed with my favorite at, the dom, and have created one as my new main to go through the new DA material with. I would very much appreciate your help in pointing out where I'm retarded in this build, as I'm sure it's in there. Thanks much for you assistance folks.

Quote:If you'd like, I can post my main villain's spec, and I have to tell you up front, it is kind of a challenge. Your lack of AOE damage, as already mentioned is not nearly as big a handicap as it appears at first, though. With the exception of the Incarnate trials, which invalidate Mind control completely, you are going to be hoverblasting your way through mission after mission in relative safety fairly early on in your career. This is the first villain I made aside from my namesake, and is to date the villain I have played the most often. His NRG powers are basically RP'd as blunt telekinetic force, so he fits a theme that is easy for me to enjoy. Send me a PM if you'd like his build or have any other questions. I've been playing him since CoV launch and still love him to death.I need to do something Dom while waiting for new Dom stuff and I have never played a Mind character. I dont want /Fire because I already have enough Fire toons. I was thinking Mind/NRG would be a good combo especially since I already have a set of fortunata purples and a confuse set of purples on another toon I am stripping because I dont play him much.
My thought is to make a Mental/TK character and this combo seems to fit that concept well.
Anyone play one that can share some advice, tricks or tips?
Thanks in advance. -
Mock all you like, be as deliberately obtuse as you like. It really doesn't change anything. I have never understood the kind of mentality that is ok with being stepped on, and will do anything they can in order to deceive themselves into thinking it isn't happening.

We'll see. I'm going to check out this 'alternate' path.

Quote:I suppose that it really isn't worth it, when you get down to it. I don't think the problem with it is that there isn't enough of it. The problem is that they gated the only progression behind it and then played dumb about the bait and switch tactic. I know, I know, we have an obligation to pretend that's not what happened, but like GR, it really is.Is it really worth it to rail against the trial system? If you don't like it, don't play it. They're releasing non-trial content now for everyone that doesn't want to deal with them, venting such vitriol does nothing except maybe make you feel a little better when someone head nods.
This is how the designers have set up end game content. Most of the problems with it are simply that there's not enough of it yet, which is being alleviated with a wider variety of trials and the new non-trial options, which we're told will also be expanded with further new zones and even Incarnate additions to older zones.
The only reason there IS alternate progression is that the pissed off 'minority' I guess we're pretending it is now, wouldn't shut up about it. And to the above guy that said the customization was this game's selling point I have to agree that it is TOO. Those two things together are what keep me and the few people I know still playing this game playing it at all.
As for the future, from this point I'm pretty sure they'll be certain to include a meager offering thrown together at the last minute to placate 'those people' in their corner over there that don't appreciate being scammed. -
Well that... Is that...
It's really hard to not think the worst of the Paragon Market when stuff like this keeps happening. -
Hmmm.. more like a 'here's a rancid beef sandwich, let me just pull down your pants and rub the dead reeking decay into your skin, and then backhand you with broken glass embedded in my knuckles' kind of thing.
It's pretty shady to pull a switch on the playerbase that's remained staunch and loyal throughout the frankly absurd ups and downs this game has undergone over the years. At least one of that magnitude. While I think the Itrials were probably inevitable, the shady, underhanded fashion they gated all the incarnate progression behind it was just an insult. The excuse 'well, we never imagined anyone would want to TEAM or SOLO their way through the incarnate path' holds absolutely no water with me. That should always, always be priority number one with this game, it's the selling point that has kept people coming back to the game for years. -

Quote:Someone's obviously doing something to move the team/league along. However, pick almost any team or league not assembled from people who had to sign up ahead of time and I would bet you dollars to doughnuts it's a few people carrying the team, the great majority just tagging along and at least a few not contributing much of anything at all. That's just the nature of the beast.
Just for reference, I ran a Bastion TF earlier today, and they were happy to have a Brute on the team with the presumption I'd be tanking. Considering this is an Energy Aura Brute for whom I haven't had enough slots to emphasise defence OR offence, that wasn't going to happen, and the team didn't really need me anyway. I could have fallen asleep and they'd have run the TF just fine without me. As a point of fact, I had to leave for a few minutes mid-mission and they went ahead just fine without me and another person on the team who was AFK over something about a furnace.
As a point of fact, I can only recall ONE team where my presence was expressly, obviously necessary pretty much as far back as I can think, and that was a team where I was the only melee - an Axe/Shield Brute - with the other members either very low level or having not built for offence, to the point where I essentially HAD to be present for anything to get killed and often so that none of us bit the dust. Granted, my memory isn't as clear as it used to be, so at most I'm looking back two or three years, but even so - that's two or three years and all of ONE team where my presence was even relevant.
It's interesting that my experience with this game varies so much from yours, Sam. However, I tend to play the kind of toons that are very noticeable when they're absent, SOA's being my favorite AT to date.
As far as the devs 'loving' their itrials... Find something else to love doing. Find another way to get reinvested in the game. Find whatever made you look at Dark Astoria and use that same focus on the Shadow Shard redside, use that focus on doing something that MATTERS with the hazard zones. BUILD hazard zones for redside, ffs. It's only been... oh...FIVE YEARS since any meaningful new environmental content was added to redside, if you discount the Mercy Makeover... which actually just moved a few NPC's around and didn't really make anything over.
Stop trying to force this raid progression on a playerbase that largely doesn't seem to want it. Your freems, the new people you're trying to attract here, don't have access to it anyway, and the way they're discussed in game they probably aren't going to want to. The player being forced into it as the only form of meaningful progression don't LIKE it. It's an insulting slap in the face after seven years of focus on team and solo content. What was the huge selling point for this game? EVERYONE CAN SOLO. What is it now, I wonder. -
Quote:LOL excellent point! No, the raid thing is balanced around the philosophy that some people will have strong IO builds and Incarnate powers. If you're not one of them you get to mooch off the people who are. Also, if there is a new episode of Mythbusters on you can plant your fingers on the number keys and watch it and mooch off the people who are paying attention.

Quote:God help us.You do know that the Trials are the core endgame content and are never going to end, don't you?
We've already got 4 that are live, 2 more in beta, 1 more coming with the next Issue, strong hints of an 8th one for fighting Tyrant, and then there's ther whole Coming Storm to deal with - the endgame system has no end, so there's no end to the Trials.
Quote:They will be - but because they're easier to do than the Trials, they'll give slower progress than the the Trials.
The Trials take longer to start, need more organization, and have harder enemies than solo content - so they give the best rewards. -
Quote:Okay. I have heard both sides of this argument, and been on both sides. I could NOT solo him on my rad/rad corr, but soloed him with ease on my Claws/WP brute, which I found hilarious. I had imagined it would be the other way around, but my brute's inherent regen outhealed the damage from the lava we both stood in.This is pure BS. When people were whining about this I soloed him on an Elec Blaster with no secondary or pool powers, using just minor damage attacks to defeat him, with only SOs of 2x acc and 3x DMG. 0% RES, 0% DEF, no heals, not even a high damage attack.
Trapdoor is slightly harder than your average enemy just because he's an EB. People not understanding how to deal with an EB is not "devs balancing around IOs."
I'm not going to say one way or another, so I'll instead change my wording. THE PERCEPTION was that Trapdoor had been balanced against IO's instead of SO's. Please don't fling your hate at me, I didn't program him, or populate the boards. -
Quote:I suppose I don't really mind it because, given the limitations of our ancient and out of date engine, it's a wonder they got it to work at all. I don't mind it that much, I can use my imagination.Great concept but the execution is bothering me even though I keep trying to pretend.
It's too bad the animation couldn't have actually been a jump. I'm trying to think if there are other animations in the game like this or lack of to try and figure out why it's being treated this way.
Love the idea of Hulk/Neo jumping into the fray landing fist into ground sending the mob into the air... and the attack itself is mathematically satisfying... but watching this "Vicious Descent" go down as a Teleport instead of a Leap is unsettling.
