Quote:This is about my experience. And, as Pine mentioned, story arcs give a bonus at the end that can help skew things toward stealthing a little. In my experience, killing through missions is almost always better XP if the character can do it at a halfway reasonable pace. I find sneaking through them while pausing to kill groups when my good powers are recharged to be a nice compromise.Viable? Yes. Efficient? Not as much.
Fastest is to team with someone who is farming or a big fast group that steamrolls over everything and everyone. The mission complete bonus is not nearly as large as the exp from wiping out multiple large groups of enemies. But it is significant.
Stealthing, I recommend turning on bosses, and pausing to take them down from time to time as you search through the mission. They are worth by far and away the most exp per hp of damage dealt, so they are a good way to get a lot of exp in a short bit of fighting. I do this with my stalkers and it works pretty good. -

Quote:In that case, we're pretty much agreed. I do usually try to keep 1-2 purples up on my softcapped /Shield scrapper against enemies with -def, since being able to take an extra shot or two before dipping below the softcap makes all the difference in the world.Which is exactly what I meant when I said "if you're talking about characters without defense, you're pretty much hosed."
Softcapping from nothing or almost nothing with purple inspirations is a non-option. Load up on reds and just kill 'em before they get you.
The point I'm trying to argue for is "You don't need DDR to make a softcapped build useful." Purple inspirations are exceedingly effective at maintaining a softcap around defense debuffers. -
Quote:Oh, dammit. CANNOT UNSEE.I enjoyed I, Jedi; even though once he starts setting up in that pirate haven-city and scouts it all out I began to get a sense of deja vu. Then comes the comment about how pirates are superstitous and cowardly, plus he had Elegos as his servant or dare I say butler, and his cover was basically a drunk buffoon celebrating his pending promotion to the Pirate Queen's lover. But at night he suits up and use his security training and Jedi powers and theatrics to strike fear in the hearts of evil!
Kept waiting for a scared criminal to ask "WHO ARE YOU?" and for Corran to get in his face and say "I'm BATMAN!" -
Quote:This. But also not having anything to do. Newspaper and scanner missions don't count as 'something to do' by my metrics, so this most commonly happens when I don't have any active contacts and have to grind those to get one. (Between those two, the only things I can really tolerate heroside are Faultline/Striga/Croatoa/RWZ, TFs, and Portal Corp missions.)Contact sends me 2 zones away to talk to someone. I talk to them. They send me back to the Contact. The Contact sends me back to the zone I was just in for the mission(!?). We have backwards-engineered Rikti Tech, but we can't even use our bleeping cell phones? I understand when I have aquired the physical MacGuffin, that I need to take it somewhere. I just hate stupid "Go talk to Frank." missions.
"We must warn Captain Super right away! Go see him in China!"
"I could just text him..."
"THERE'S NO TIME!"
Also, really steamrolling teams. I like the team to have a little trouble. Not constant teamwipes, but if all I need to do is walk forward and try to hit an AoE now and then before four Shield Charges and two Rain of Arrows hit, I'd be getting a more challenging and interactive time by playing Pong. -

Quote:Same here, really. If I had my druthers, I'd just keep a bag of them around to eat a handful every hour or so to regulate my caffeine levels. Ironically, I got into tea to start slowly weaning myself off caffeine, since a mug of tea is liiiiiiittle less of it than a Diet Mountain Dew.*sees a buncha wimps cryin' about how chocolate-covered coffee beans are so strong*
Geez, seriously? Man Cards, now. Had a bag of those things once, think I got more of a rush off the chocolate
Sweet tea is an abomination unto nature. Unsweetened iced tea is okay.
For Real Tea, Darjeeling >= Orange Pekoe > Green Tea > Earl Grey, in my opinion. As people said, doing it loose is better than tea bags, but tea bags aren't horrible if you only want a cup at a time. Also, I highly recommend you get a water filter if you drink tap water, since the taste of fluoride can really screw with it. -
As far as fighting at range, as people have said, it depends on the set. On my Traps/Dark or Rad/Rad Defenders, I spend most fights constantly jumping in and out of melee range. On my Cold/Ice, there's almost nothing for me to do in melee, and my personal damage mitigation is low enough that I'm usually quite happy if I can avoid all the AoEs going off around the tank. Somebody standing at range isn't necessarily being too squeamish if they're blasting back there. A lot of the sets don't have many very good reasons at all to enter melee range.
For damage, well, you have an entire set of nothing but damage for a reason, and none of the primaries require so much attention that you shouldn't have time to throw out an attack or nineteen now and then. If a Defender isn't using those, something has gone wrong at some point. -
Quote:True, but when fighting groups like Longbow, where every single spawn can do substantial amounts of -def, softcapping yourself with purples before every fight usually isn't an option for a character with no native defense. That's a lot of purples. On those groups, I usually rely on my powers to keep me alive and burn purples before hard fights or during fights that turn out to be harder than they looked as damage control. The latter case is really what I was referring to above, suddenly realizing I'm taking a ton more damage than I expect and noticing that my defense is at -40%.You have to use the purple inspirations proactively, that is to say, before you get debuffed. Using them reactively only recoups the defense lost, leaving you at the softcap and at the mercy of the next lucky shot which is bound to come. You can rarely ever recover from a cascade failure once it starts.

That too. What little of theirs that I've heard has convinced me that I really need to get my hands on their discography when I have time. Reminds me a lot of the Nihil - Adios period of KMFDM's stuff, which is my favorite.
-
Quote:And here I thought I was the only one who liked that book. A lot of people seem to hate Corran Horn as a Mary Sue. Yeah, Rogue Squadron Jedi is probably a bit over-the-top, but I still don't really mind him. This is a very good point. A lot of the EU stuff that focuses on non movie characters is quite good. I, Jedi is one of my favorite.
This is an important one... For years leading up to the NJO, it seemed like every. Single. Book. was "Oh no! Renegade Imperial warlord Admiral [name here] is threatening galactic stability!" There was also a very good chance they had the superweapon of the day. Ysanne Isard, Warlord Zsinj, Admiral Daala, Admiral Thrawn, Moff Disra... Frankly, by the time NJO came out, I was ready to accept just about any other threat. Not to say that some of those weren't awesome, but by that point, it had been done to death. -
Quote:Have you listened to any KMFDM? They generally have one song per album making fun of themselves (I recommend Intro for the best example of this,) as well as lacing some running jokes through most of their discography. Most industrial leaves me cold, though, but I do like My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult; they have a sense of humor.
As for me, somehow, the three genres of music I listen to most are industrial (mostly industrial metal,) dance, and ska. That accounts for probably half of my music, with the rest of it being a mix of everything under the sun. KMFDM, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Prodigy, Streetlight Manifesto, Devo, Electric Six, Fluke, Gogol Bordello, and Powerman 5000 are all pretty high on my list. -
Depends on the set, but generally, yeah. I've still run into quite a few situations where I have to pop 3-4 small purples just to get back to 0% defense on non-defense sets. Having enemies debuff you to -50% defense hurts.
-
I'm not sure if I'd call defense debuffing rare... I think it's both more common and more severe than people tend to realize. Any time you see a non-pistol gun or blade, it probably has -def on it, and that covers a lot of enemies right there. Longbow seems to be one of the worst about that, since most of their troops have assault rifles of one sort or another--I monitor defense on my /elec brute, and it's rarely above -40% against Longbow. Ironically, some groups seem to get less defense debuffs as they get higher level, thanks to their mooks with guns getting replaced.
-
I would like certain powers to give you a 100% chance to hit in some situations, like when using Aim or snipes against an even level minion. Maybe removing the 95% cap against inanimate objects too. But for every power in every situation, not really.

Quote:And the Council Penumbra guys, who are basically schmucks with SMGs, are the Council's special operations division, tasked with covert ops, assassinations, and espionage. Even the lowest level recruits receive some special training, particularly in stealth and evasion techniques." Not to mention Cor Leonis Archons being "in command of small military cells, completely cut off from their compatriots - both for the sake of security, and to encourage independent thinking." when you can fight them by the dozen. But on the note of descriptions in the text not matching what we see in game, let's look at the Thorn Wielder from the Circle of Thorns, this is their official description: The mighty Thorn Wielders are the elite guardians of the Circle of Thorns. They wield the sacred Thorn Blades, enchanted weapons that leave a taint of foul magic on anyone they strike.
Particularly this part: The mighty Thorn Wielders are the elite guardians of the Circle of Thorns. -
First that thing saying that a majority of players never finish games, now this. Apparently the vast majority of people just log into games, screw around for a few hours, and never touch them again.

All of this. Cold/ is a very good all-arounder. Mine remains my character of choice for teams facing hard content.

Quote:This'd be pretty useful. I have had some times when I've wished I could change it. Mostly when a character who's supposed to be big and scary is suddenly limned in sparkly rainbows.I've not followed the subject, if it's even been brought up before, but have there been any requests or Dev comments on maybe one day customizing the actual Domination visual effect? I know they plan to let us customize power pools, patron powers, etc. and would love to be able to change the rainbow sparkle effect of Domination buildup and activation. At the very least change the colors. At the very best change the theme - fire, elec, etc. similar to Aim variations.

Three stacked trays. With vet powers, two Wentworth's porters, temp powers, and macros, those can start overflowing, in which case I make a fourth (square) tray to sit between my chat window and the power bar, holding all my rarely-used stuff like teleportation powers.
-
... I just now realized that thanks to gleemail, my marketeering character can now be all my characters at once.
-
The people who beat me here covered most of it. Traps takes a bit to mature. Even then, I find it one of the least effective sets at keeping your team alive despite themselves. If the Blaster is jumping headfirst into a spawn that can kill him in ten seconds, there's not a lot you can do about that. If a more durable character gets there first and soaks up the damage for the rest of the team while you set up, things usually go pretty smoothly.
By the time you have all your toys, you can probably run into most x8 spawns alone and gift-wrap them for your team. I'd stick it out until at least Poison Gas Trap to really start judging Traps. Seeker Drones is also very nice as a pitch-hitter tank.
(I've always thought PGT, Seeker Drones, Acid Mortar, or FFG should have been one of the first two powers to give you more low-level team defense.) -
Quote:I've found this very variable. I usually don't marketeer at all until a character is in the mid-30s or so (too much of an altoholic to bother with it on a character there's about an 80% chance I'm going to delete sooner or later) and just list everything I get that's not particularly valuable for around its vendor price. In the 20s, I'll have anywhere from a few million to 100-ish million, depending on how lucky I get with drops, how much I team, and whether I fight more magic vs. tech enemies. What I don't understand is how you get to 27 with only 3.5 million or so. I mean, by the time you hit the 20s, you are likely going to be getting the occasional rare drop that will sell for that much inf, so by 27 you should have gotten at least 2 or 3 of them and have about 10 million.

Quote:This is pretty much exactly how I played my AR/Traps Corrruptor (and very similar to my Traps/Dark Defender if you change a few power names.) Similar to /Devices blasters, I found the durability to scale with setup time--if you're willing to spend a while setting up a mine field and all, you can turn EBs into kittens. My general strategy is as follows:
1. Seekers to take the Alpha
2. Drop an Acid Mortar
3. Jump into the middle and plant a Poison Trap
4. Jump out and use Flamethrower -> Full Auto -> Buckshot
5. Mop up the survivors using Burst and Slug with the Web 'Nade/Ignite combo against tough enemies
On a spawn-to-spawn level, I just found it kind of slow by the time I hit the 30s. I could mow down minions and mop up lieutenants without needing too long, but boss fights (especially against lethal-resistant things like Freak Tanks) would just go on and on and on, so I eventually gave up on soloing it. But:
1. This was before the Buckshot change.
2. I didn't have Ignite, since I can't stand the redraw from cycling Ignite/Webnade.
