  1. Since the power the Tornado uses to apply the defense debuff is auto, I would expect it to check once per 10 seconds, like a damage aura or rain power does.
  2. Volcanic Gasses is a funny little power, just about up there with Carrion Creepers in terms of complexity. I'm trying to figure some things out about it; for the purposes of this, I'll use the Dominator numbers, because that's really what I'm interested in. As far as I can tell from its City of Data writeup...

The power actually summons seven pets.
    Volcanic Gas
Pet #1 is Volcanic Gas, which just sits there and spams the AoE fire damage attack. Nobody cares. Next!

    Volcanic Geyser
The rest of the pets are Volcanic Geysers. One Volcanic Geyser is summoned at a time every ten seconds the patch is down. Each Geyser lasts 15 seconds and has a single power, Thermal Vents.

    Thermal Vents
Thermal Vents is a ranged mag 3 AoE hold with a 6 second recharge and a base 7.45 second duration. The hold component isn't flagged as being unenhanceable, so with 95% hold enhancement, I assume that this becomes a 14.5s duration hold. Thermal Vents is listed as having a blank cast time, so I assume that it casts instantly.

    So, various thoughts and questions:
    Performance versus a single target
As far as I can tell, if there's only a single target inside Volcanic Gasses, every casting of Thermal Vents will be directed at it. Assuming none of them miss, this can get nasty fast. If my math is correct, by the 16 second point, the target will be under a mag 12 hold, and it proceeds to waver between mag 12 and mag 15 for the rest of the power's duration.

0s: Geyser 1 spawned, target hit with 14.5s mag 3 hold (Geyser 1). Now has mag 3 hold on it.
6s: Target hit with 14.5s mag3 hold (Geyser 1). Now has a mag 6 hold on it.
10s: Geyser 2 spawned, target hit with 14.5s mag 3 hold (Geyser 2). Now has a mag 9 hold on it.
12s: Target hit with 14.5s mag3 hold (Geyser 1). Now has a mag 12 hold on it.
14.5s: First hold from Geyser 1 fades. Now has a mag 9 hold on it.
    15s: Geyser 1 despawns.
16s: Target hit with 14.5s mag 3 hold (Geyser 2). Now has a mag 12 hold on it.
20s: Geyser 3 spawned, target hit with 14.5 mag 3 hold (Geyser 3). Now has a mag 15 hold on it.
20.5s: Second hold from Geyser 1 fades. Now has a mag 12 hold on it.
22s: Target hit with 14.5s mag 3 hold (Geyser 2). Now has a mag 15 hold on it.
24.5s: First hold from Geyser 2 fades. Now has a mag 12 hold on it.
    25s: Geyser 2 despawns.
26s: Target hit with 14.5s mag 3 hold (Geyser 3). Now has a mag 15 hold on it.
26.5s: Third hold from Geyser 1 fades. Now has a mag 12 hold on it.
    [. . .]

    Does this look correct?

    Procs
Since Thermal Vents is a click power, it appears to me that any hold procs in Volcanic Gasses will be triggered every six seconds per Volcanic Geyser. Carnifax's post in this thread suggests this is true--does anybody have enough experience to confirm it?

You can often get 200 million for 2 A-Merits this way which, given the cost of purples works out to needing about 4-6 alignment merits for every purple recipe.

Now most people only slot 5 pieces of the set and the proc is generally a bit cheaper than the others so you're probably looking at around 50 alignment merits per character to get 10 purples this way.
This, plus, if you run those tip missions at level 50, you have a chance for purples to drop. Over the course of doing tips to get my Dominator her last couple of purple sets, I've had two purples drop.

Also, note what other people have said: Purples aren't necessarily the be-all-end-all IOs. The recharge bonuses are great... if you need recharge bonuses. But they mostly lack other popular bonuses (*cough*defense*cough*).

... y'know, the entire post was a joke (if "These threads just don't list petty enough things for me to be proud of" didn't make it obvious) but apparently not having any catgirls really does make people think they're better than everybody else.

Also, the OP should just say the following:

    *brofist*

These threads just don't list petty enough things for me to be proud of.

I'm proud that I have a bunch of level 50 Defenders instead of Corruptors, because it's a nobler AT.

I'm proud that I always pick Shield Drone or Blue Wisp for my vet pet, because I don't think the oscillators or fairies are aesthetically pleasing.

I'm proud of giving all the poor unloved Detonation, Air Burst, Crushing Haymaker, Essence of Curare, and Ruin pieces a home.

I'm proud my main Blaster is Elec/Elec, because raw damage is so passé.

I'm proud that I have exactly one FotM build character and exactly one catgirl, or otherwise I'd go around acting better than everybody else.
  8. If you work for alignment merits, each of those recipes are 4 days of tip missions, tops. That's how I've gotten them on my characters I want them on--tip missions are a nice way to level up anyway, and getting good recipes out of it is just gravy. I wouldn't call them all worth having in every build, either. My /Elec Brute has no need for more recovery, and most squishies won't get that much from +25% regen (it would be a whopping 1.3 hp/sec for my level 50 Dominator.)

Your local gaming store is probably the best start, yeah. The site Pen and Paper Games also lets you register yourself, along with the systems you're interested in. You can see what other players are in your area, and invite them to games. I actually got invited to two games through the service, so it apparently works... although it definitely works better if you're the one doing the inviting, since that was two invitations in about 18 months in a dense residential area.

If you're interested in play-by-post online games, Myth-Weavers, Plothook.net, and The Tangled Web all have forums for that. A lot of game companies' sites also serve to hook up players and GMs for online games, and there are also some fan sites for specific games, like Pattern Spider for Exalted or Dumpshock for Shadowrun.

If you're interested in non-play-by-post online games, the site rpgloop helps hook up players and GMs for online games played over gaming software like OpenRPG or MapTool (both free.)

Yeah, I've never been quite sure about how I feel about the Freakshow's direction since the earlier issues. Hell, as I remember, they get a lot of their members from bored successful twenty-somethings, but most of the missions portray them as borderline illiterate. I think there actually are a couple missions with jokes about Freaks being illiterate. Maybe Excelsior causes brain damage.

Dark Astoria. Yes, not "a storyline," but a zone with a ton of atmosphere AND story elements in it (COT trying to keep "the sleeper" bound, the BP waking it, and the Tsoo looking for "something" - I know I've made a number of suggestions on it, as have others.)

Darrin Wade, yes. And, again, if we're going "All team, all trial Praetorian invasion," hey, why not some solo/small team stuff fighting another godlike being - y'know, kind of incarnate level appropriate - in the Shard? Ruularu has just been hanging out for quite some time.

See how the Shivans tie into the Coming Storm. They just kind of hang out (and get controlled, sort of, by Aeon.)

Even if we're not getting them as an EAT because of the shapeshifting or whatnot, going through Gadzul Oil, the Blood of the Black Stream and everything they're doing (something about a worldwide techno/magic computer of some sort) would be good for teen to 30s, at the least.

Giving VEATs a decent storyline instead of the travesty they have now might get me interested in actually playing their storyline again.

Redoing (and making somewhat clearer, more "investigative" and easier to follow from contact to contact) the Skull -> Trolls -? Family -> ... ? and Hellion - Outcast - Tsoo messing with everyone - ? lines would be good.
All of these. Dark Astoria and the Shadow Shard are the two zones that always come up whenever this topic is raised, and something needs to be done with the Blood of the Black Stream. Also, the Council/Column war. The Kahn/Barracuda TFs re-introduce the 5th Column, but right now, they don't really have any sort of in-game presence outside the TFs and a few street spawns. Give them some story arcs or something to explain what they've been doing all this time and what their plans for the future are.

True, I'd forgotten about the wrapped-up thing. It's one I noticed a few weeks after Praetoria came out, myself... by the time you leave, most of the storylines are resolved and it seems like you're up there in the upper echelons of power. Which is good for a standalone experience, but makes it hard to tie into the rest of the game as a whole.

Also, Fitness couldn't really cause any problems: You take it, it gives you a free benefit. The Fighting toggles have endurance costs associated, which some builds are much better off avoiding.

  21. One thing that's been apparent to me in my time here is that a good chunk of CoH players are also pretty avid tabletop gamers, but I've never really gotten a good overview of what people actually play, since half of the threads have just turned into D&D 4 vs. D&D 3.5 (don't do that in this one, seriously.) I was actually short player or two for an online Exalted game a while back and went, 'well, I know a few folks in CoH play it, maybe I could ask them...' only to realize I couldn't remember most of the specifics on who played what.

So, I'm curious. What d'you play?

Me: (and feel free to format your lists differently)
    Currently Playing
Exalted 2e (Infernals): And getting close to delicious Devil-Tiger-ness after playing weekly since the Infernals book came out. I'm thinking my character's Devil-Tiger title will be The Apocalypse And What Comes After, since she agrees that a lot of prominent people need to be horribly incinerated according to the current Reclamation's plans, but also thinks that Primordials need to shepherd and protect Creation instead of just rampage in it... since the current batch doesn't seem up to this job, the idea of replacing Malfeas as head honcho is starting to look mighty tempting...

Exalted 2e (Lunars): Well, a game that'll be starting soon. High Conviction, low Compassion Lunar assassin! What could possibly go wrong?

Eclipse Phase: A PbP game, also starting soon. I'm playing a jack-of-all-trades freelance reporter for the Hypercorps. In a liquid metal body. Who infiltrates Martian separatists. And with a literal addiction to viewing other people's memories. God, I love Eclipse Phase. Being wise to its ways, a good chunk of my starting points went to a backup body.

    Currently Running
Nothing! Because after running Changeling for six months, then Exalted for a year, then Eclipse Phase for another four months, I deserve a break. Especially since each year of running Exalted is as much work as seven years of running something else. Just like with dogs! I'm leaning strongly toward running Changeling again soon... if I can find players. My normal group is down to about three players, only one of which actually knows Changeling.

    Also Own
Changeling: the Lost: Probably my favorite game of all time... conceptually, at least. I've never really played in a game of it that lived up to the game's potential, but I still adore it.

D&D 4e: Was my beer-and-pretzels game for about a year and a half, but it eventually died after too many people had to drop out.

Gamma World: I was supposed to run this for my friends, but nah.

Geist: the Sin-Eaters: I like this conceptually, but reading it didn't really give me any campaign or character ideas. Which is weird, because usually I come away from a book with fifty ideas. Especially weird since most people report the opposite, that this was one of the most idea-inspiring books they ever read.

Mutants & Masterminds, 2e and 3e: Makes a nice game for introducing people to the hobby, in my experience. I've created about four characters for 2e, but never been in a game of it that lasted more than one session.

BESM 3e: BESM d20 was the first system I ever ran a game in (yes, it's a trainwreck,) but nostalgia aside, I seem to be one of the very few people who like BESM. It makes a nice light, flexible system if you're not playing with min-maxers. Just ignore all the fluff.

Shadowrun 4e: Shadowrun interests me on a general level, but every time I look at the core book, I get the strong sense that it requires a lot of commitment. Since, you know, it has like six different sub-systems of rules for different things and a good chunk of backstory. (I already have a game that pretty much requires you to write a doctorate thesis on it before you can run a campaign. It's called Exalted.) Still, I give it a try now and then.

Serenity: Never really read it or played it. It's a game that I think I'd enjoy both playing and running, though, so I'm not sure why.

Paranoia: My friend ran a brief campaign of this after I bought the book, and everybody seemed to enjoy it. A great game to introduce people to stuff with, especially if your friends are a bunch of devious backstabbers like mine.

I'm also very curious about L5R, but I have zero evidence that people actually play this game. It's kind of hard to work up enthusiasm for reading a game I'll likely never get to play.

  24. Well, it'd go something like this.

Days 1-6: Lay around in a fugue, trying to get into various single-player games and offline activities and finding myself just instinctively trying to log in to check to markets or run a few tip missions.

Days 7-20: Try out different MMOs and remember that I hate all of them.

Days 21+: Eventually just spend more time on the other stuff I enjoy. Probably read a lot more and start watching more than five anime series a year. Almost invariably, I'd start running a new tabletop game, as I got bottled up with character ideas that would have to go somewhere.
