But those are mannerisms, quirks. When I spoke about interjecting our own idiom in whatever foreign language we're speaking at the time, it was indeed about interjecting natural idiom into whatever foreign language we're speaking at the time.
I do understand it adds flavour in RP, but I keep that I never heard anyone do it. An example are German people, the idea I have of them (and which seems backed by other people's experience), is that they are a really accomodating folk. They go to a foreign country and they make an effort to speak the language, different say, from French, which more than once I've found repeating words slowly and loudly as if they would become more understandable (I'm French, I can get away with dissing them ;p).
It can lead to what is a stereotype of German accent. Which I really thought was a joke, a sterotype, until I happened to meet German people and spoke with them, the portuguese and germany pronouns are all switched around. English doesn't have that.
Example, pretty for a male would be 'bonito' and for a female would be 'bonita'. I'm trying to come up with a simile in English but the language just doesn't lend itself to it. Take it from me, it's just funny.
Anyway, I went off in a tangent. I do believe we're all heavily influenced by the Gambit, Nightcrawler, Colossus' out there. Not to mention the mangas and stuff which even when translated still keep the -chans and -kuns and konichiwas.
I'm not trying to be a hardcase, and it really is *not* something that bothers me deeply, I just happened to be reminded about it with all the posts in this thread and I'm voicing my thoughts about it.
Doesn't make sense to go:
'Nihao!'
'What?'
'It means hello.'
'Oh, why didn't you say hello then?' -
I'm one of those who speaks French and I did feel the itch to send a tell to Loup a couple of times (especially when I see the word Kreyol, which I've only seen spelled as Creoule).
Reason I never did is that I felt Loup's player knew what he was about. I've been exposed to a number of languages, one of which is the Portuguese Crioulo, basicly the same thing but the base language is portuguese which some black people use. Despite myself being portuguese I understood a word in ten, I couldn't make sense of what they spoke
Now what I find myself interested is from where did the whole cult thing of using words in different languages than the one being spoken from came.
Japanese is undoubtly the worst offender. Thanks to manga and anime we get japanese characters in no matter the RP medium. A normal English conversation can have a dozen words in japanese can be placed which leaves non-japanese speaking people having to ask for a translation. Which, when asked for, is provided, meaning the words weren't used by not knowing what they meant in English.
I'm not saying it doesn't add flavour, but I think people have been a leeetle bit influenced by comics and movies. I've yet to find a real person who uses bits of their home idiom in whatever language they happen to be speaking.
I myself am French, living in Portugal, and thanks to the interwebs I'm a fluent English speaker. Yet when I go to Frence to visit I never speak a word of Portuguese even if a word eludes (what's the point, no one would understand it no matter how slow or loud I'd repeat it). Same as when I go to England I never use Portuguese or French in my speech.
Am I just really weird, or..?
P.S. Maybe I should make a portuguese guy and go around, 'Yo pessoal, tudo bem?' as a greet.

Things were going terribly wrong.
Craddling her broken arm on her lap, Lea fought the rise of nausea the grating of broken bones grated caused each time she moved.
So much for posturing about the heroes being arrogant, how easy it was to fall into the same when all seemed to be going well. This was a small planet with big guns and for a while it looked as if they were going to push the Rikti after a series of won battles.
And yet.. And yet..
Heavy stomps of an armored alien came closer to the bench where Lea was hidding under, but the steps carried on without stopping.
The raiding had been a violent push, she had heard as much as three different sirens going off at the same time and had headed to Atlas, it being the closest.
It was a scene of disaster. it had started as usual, powers being fired, small talk, but once the tide of Rikti had begun it soon became a tsunami. Being at waist level she couldn't even see what was happening though at a certain point she noticed far less screams and far far less coloured costumes in a sea of dull green and grey.
It was by then she was starting to get overhelmed. Too many at once, too many fists, too many great glowing swords and ionised gun blasts. As much as she took and tried to use far more came until she had reeled back and disappeared under a pile of Rikti whose fists and swords rose and fell at the crumpled small white form.
It was a big blur of pain of which she just barely remembered a spandex wearing hero unleashing a mighty gale of wind that tossed the aliens away like matchsticks. An eye was almost closed shut and when he grinned there was a bloody gap in an otherwise perfect smile. Unshakeable optism just poured from him and if her ringing ears were able to catch the words his moving lips were forming she was sure they would be inspiring and uplifting. He was healing her and trying to keep the gale going at the same time.. For a few seconds it looked as if it was going to work and then with a spray of red mist his head suddenly disappeared.
His body twitched in the air for an agonizing second before crumpling to the ground and shimmering away. She doubted even the great medical facilities could do something for him.
She was having trouble breathing and the red puddle where the hero had fallen were forcing hysterical tears to her eyes whenever she happened to glance its way.
Then, silence... She risked crawling from under the bench and look over. The aliens, all of them, chillingly moving as if a single unit had stopped and looked at the sky before disappearing in their familiar green glow.
They had left, but why? They had won this one. -
"So, how mmmmuch forrr it?"
Leandrea was reigning in her patience as the jeweller took his time awing and humming while poking the small, flat bar of gold he was hunched over. He was the third and by now Lea's expectations were lower and lower, each one before him had started to ask questions and probing the provenience of the gold, to which her (at first truthful, and then progressively vague) answers weren't satisfactory.
The tiny white feline took the time to examine her surroundings. It was certainly a seedier shop than the first two. Dust was gathering on the flat surfaces, the shinnies in display weren't particulary pretty or in good condition and above all, it was cramped, the shop itself crammed between two buildings of a back alley. On her own she would never have found it.
A throat clearing noise from the bent man made her look back, small beads of sweat were pearling his brow and the little cat found herself slightly disgusted from the display and rank smell.
'Hairless apes...'
The thought remained in her head such as her hands firmly in her pockets. She was small in her previous world, though average in her original one, but in this one she was smaller than a young human child and at fifty years old the patronizing tones and 'little one' comments were wearing thin.
Especially as she was so thrice damned powerless. It was a sobering sight to give all she had against a Rikti and see how it withstood her, she who had been able to put down a building with a single well aimed blast. As it was she no longer could fly (a cold grip at the base of her stomach at the loss of that freedom), her strength was average for her size and her speed was baseline. No blasts, no healing others, no resilience.
With a slight shiver the feline tried to focus on what she *could* still do. She could still absorb energy, she could still digest it and use it in a punch, she could still steal the kinetic energy of a physical blow in order to neuter most of it, or absorb an energy blast in order to deflect most of its destructiveness. And she could use that energy to boost her self-healing. But it was all so basic. New world, new rules, it would take some heavy duty meditating to attune herself to the similar-yet-slightly-different laws of physics.
Leaving the pawnkeeper to his own devices (undoubtly trying to work how to swindle her further, Lea thought) the little cat pondered the last two days.
The Rikti had been coming strong and her initial unwillingness to join in the resistance had been suddenly shattered when a small invasion fleet attacked Galaxy City as she was there.
Joining others who were present she found herself recruited in a small team of.. of... At this point the poetic justic would be saying of grim, hard faced fighters. But in truth other than that deliciously hunky wolf the rest were taking it as some sort of fun adventure, something which Lea attributed to the outstanding medical facilities and what the heroes called 'medi-port' which transported them to the hospital if their vital signs reached dangerous levels. It did remove much of the 'hero' in heroing, but it was certainly safer, and prone to allow truly dangerous levels of arrogance. Few seemed to take the invasion seriously.
The two days and nights had blurred by then. Some of the small team left to be replaced by others, but the fighting had been non stop, the raid sirens had been a constant and she was exhausted as much from the fighting as from running from one place to the other while the others flew, or jumped. The absorbed energy from the Rikti blasts only did so much to sustain her stamina with so little food and littler rest stolen between the raids.
Of those frantic days she only remembered glimpses of those who had shared the battles. Psionic Song, who was like a radio station, picking the mental impulses of the Rikti and chillingly addopting their manner of speech while guiding them to the landing spots. Molly, the pink armed-to-the-teeth teen with a seeming endless supply of bullets. Someone truly huge fittingly called Big Lunk, who easily tore through the Rikti she was barely denting with a sword in each huge meaty paw. And of course, the wolf, Loup Garou as a discreet enquiry revealed, who had distincly chilled his warm smile once she had flirted a few times with him.
Rubbing her gritty feeling eyes Lea decided this world was certainly operating on its own set of rules, so far each little flirt had not only been rebuffed but pretty much had her ostracized by whomever had caught her eye.
"So, where did you get this?" Lea was shaken from her exhausted flashback by the reedy voice. There was greed in it, expertly hidden in a bored tone, but he really should stop holding both hands possessively cupped over the gold bar and sweating so visibly for it to be believed.
'Well you see, this is the fourth world I've found myself in and by now I would call myself a veteran. You can't carry much, and there's always a need for lodging and food until getting used to the new culture. Gold is an universal trade commodity and is always valued as long as it's real, natural, neither man made of magicked up. So I bought it and brough it over instead of money that would be toy cash here.'
"Stole it," Lea said instead, having perfectly recognized the type of pawnshop and shopkeeper she was dealing with.
The man's eyes just about glittered in happyness. -
But I've never seen the Enforcers do any sort of -def attacks. Is the proc working but as a bug or as intended?

I think its much harder to play a good Stone tank than it is to play say a good Ice Tank. With its resistance to slows and its amazing agro capabilities all you have to worry about with ice is surviving.
[/ QUOTE ]
That's something I'm learning with my new tank. Having played a ice/fire and now playing a WP/SS I find that I'm having a lot more trouble with agro keeping.
With my ice/fire I had CE and constant AoE 'splosions, I got so used to it that I didn't think it was any sort of unusual that mobs stayed glued to me (I did take taunt for those outside my aura range).
With my WP (granted that I don't have Footstomp yet) I find that I lose agro pretty easy and some spawns are so huge that they test my limits. Taunt spam is a given, especially as after a few deaths I managed to remember (correctly I hope) that an aura has an agro cap of 10, taunt of 5 and punchvoke will add 2 more to reach the limit. I was relying only on my aura, which coupled with the AoEs of my previous tanker had been quite enough but on my WP, especially with WP's tiny aura radius, simply doesn't cut it. -
Yes, I thought of that but only after having posted. I wanted to say it was to be a mix of farming and TF toon, whatever it may mean. The emphasis was more towards shaving recharge times (without needing to enter perma state) and pushing imp damage, all the rest was to be gravy.
I don't ask for builds as a rule, just putter around and put something up, but the inventions are downright scary o_o
Plus the whole thing about costs and stuff. Something cheap to begin with (I do have 38 million on my I7 tank but I understand it's pocket cash) which later on can be, possibly, upgraded.
Having left at I7 I don't know how much of a replay value has been added since then. I remember reaching 50 and twiddling my thumbs as there was nothing much to do so I just made a new char. Replay value is what would make me push to upgrade to an expensive build since I'd keep on playing the char.
Btw, thanks a lot for the two builds ^^ Unfortunatly my Mid's designer is having fits whenever I try to import the data chunk giving me an 'unhandled exception' with a 'arithmetic overflow'. Google searching has given me no answers, but I'll try to build it and copy the enhances.
Edit: Actually it's only the first one that's having a fit, the second build is imported fine. Very odd. -
Greetings.
I've been playing a fire/rad when I came back to the game about a month ago and she's at level 35.
Since I left at I7 I haven't really ground my nose into the new inventions though I have been buying normal crafted IOs since, on the long run, they would be cheaper than buying SOs.
My plan is to slot IOs with sets at around 40-45 but so far I haven't seen any builds I could cop.. ahem, I could glean some information of.
So does anyone have the patience to post a fire/rad build relatively cheap that shaves recharge times (we loves the AM, we do) and pushes imp damage? I read something about build up procs on pet slots? Or was I wrong?
P.S. I'd apreciate a running commentary on the sets and what they do for the build so I can understand the teory behind it
My thoughts so far: it's working well, but Flashfire is missing a bit too much for my tastes so I'm considering replacing a disorient for an accuracy (so does Firecages to be honest, but it's not as big a concern). I'm starving for slots so I haven't slotted Cinders yet, but honestly I rarely use it and when I do there's usually RI which helps. Soon as I have some slots it'll get the traditional 2/2/2, or perhaps three accuracies as well since Choking Cloud is right behind anyway. Until the imps I had some problems with stamina once AM ran out, but not much, just a matter of timing it when soloing and when in teams I didn't have endurance problems since I was a bit more surgical. Ever since I've taken the imps the problems are completly gone, they are lovely beasties
Here's my current build (I intend to take the psy pool for mez protection once I reach that level)

What's so odd about a AR blaster that carries different sort of ammunition? Or a fire blaster that knows how to use their powers non lethally? How many super powered heroes (in the comics) out there actually kill the robbers they happen to find?
And yet there's dozens of Human Torches in all sorts of different power combos and they all know how to use their powers.
Lots of blade users as well, lots of archers, we don't see them killing anyone in the comics, why would CoH be different?
The thing is, the game itself isn't particulary realistic, so we can't nitpick that much. How many times does the AR or Archery blaster stop to reload? If we play for hours contantly shooting and etc, then what's so odd about thinking there's trick arrows and rubber bullets being carried as well as bullet piercing for the super powered enemies? -
With only the teeensy weeny 'problem' that the first AoE of the supposed AoE set is at.. level 28, and the last at 38.
I don't know about you guys, but if I was to pick an AoE heavy set because I want to play in such fashion, having to wait until more than half my game play to even *start* doing so just doesn't ring right.
Personally, all of Warmace's AoEs should be available right at the start. Or put one in the first powers, another at the mid levels and the last at the last power.
Warmace seems pretty cool. I like KD and I like AoEs, it's a good combo. I'm not too bothered about damage since I'm playing with a team 90% of my time, my job is to keep them safe. But having to wait so long to start doing what I want from the set just keeps me away.
In the end I've re-rolled another ice/fire tank ^^ I liked my first. -
Well, I've already went /fire and it was pretty sweet since the AoEs were decently low level. With DB I'm not being very enchanted by the fact, as you've pointed out, that I need to reach level 38 to get the second (and third) AoE. Not to mention that I need to take a bunch of attacks to get all the combos.
I suppose that taking Icicles might be worth it with a relatively spammable Empower. Anyway, I've played the game, and from all sets only fire and now DB has plenty of AoEs to spam. I wouldn't mind trying something else if all other sets weren't so single target focused with just one AoE thrown in. 90% of a tank's time is spent neck deep in big spawns, so single target hits seem a waste.
I confess I feel like rolling a second ice/fire but I'll see how it goes. -
I'm not sure on how to take that second post.
Some asking around while in the game told me that ice was nerfed (though I only got something about Hibernate's duration (?) being lowered) and that Stone/Invuln was the new God of tanks thanks to those newfangled IOs tingies.
Ah, and that farming has become the new fad. Funny how the game was attractive due to being simple and grindless (barring leveling) but seems to have gone on the reverse route.
I'll ask in game what's the purpose of this farming for IO purposes, since when I last left the only thing left at 50 was to raid Hamidon. If this was WoW with harder and meaner raids one after the other I'd understand trying to become harder and stronger. -
Well, at least time passes but the forums remains the same.
-
Greetings!
After a year's absence I've returned since the game was so much fun. I used to play a ice/fire tank and really enjoyed the AoE goodness I could dish out.
Having heard that Dual Wield had good AoE capacities I decided to give it a go but I can't really find the combos. Though with my limited experience (level 4) I'm not sure if it's really that good for that purpose, considering there's a need to hit two/three times with long-ish animations before being able to unleash said AoEs and this provided if one of the moves doesn't fail, fizzling said AoE combo.
I've been gone since expansion 7, anything in particular which has affected tanks? -
..about the cost of toggles.
I have a ice tank and pretty much all his toggles cost (according to my builder) around 0.21. This with a endreduc SO in them.
Now I was checking brutes and trying to make a build, and as I browsed the different secondaries I keep on finding that toggles cost around 0.10 or 0.13, this without being slotted yet.
Even the vaunted /Dark, devourer of kittens and endurance, is showing as 0.10 for the three shields (though much more for the other toggles).
I don't see the point of putting a endreduc in these kind of numbers, to go from 0.10 to 0.8 is hardly ground breaking.
... or am I missing something? -
I was reading up on the thing about controller secondaries having 30% effecctiveness/power of the 'original' defender primaries, and was curious how much of a cut down it is.
A defender's Fortitude gives about 30% defense/damage/accuracy, so how much a controller's 30% of 30% give?
The same applying to /sonic shields for example, where a sonic's shield would grant around 30% resistance if granted by a defender, then how much by a controller? -
I meant to cap the defense, the hipothetical 3% if we only EA a spawn of five. You slotting would achieve the same I reckon, though the third recharge only shaves 6 seconds. Perhaps 33% more end recovery wouldn't be bad either in a purely statistical view.
-
Hmm, found, downloaded, installed and tested. Seems that by including CJ and Weave the defense stays at 39%. If we include, lets say, a spawn of five for EA to hit, that would add 4%, so 43%.
That's close enough as far as I'm concerned. One *could* add Manouvers to supply those remaining 3% but I fail to see the interest.
Sounds good to me. We go from medium defences to nearly-at-Elude.... perma.
Endurance problems due to having eight toggles running should be minimal as presently I run six toggles, no Stamina and live off EA which I've managed with a minimum of jungling and pretty much ignoring blues.
*With* Stamina, EA *and* Hibernate for emergency end recovery (fighting a single boss who survived the spawn devastation) eight toggles shouldn't be troublesome.
I like it. If the maths stand it seems pretty good. Tough for some resistance to smash/lethal, a butt load of HP, two potent heals and hits coming through every blue moon.
Now if only I could fit back Icicles before level 41...
P.S EA slotted for just end modifiers and recharge. If one would switch from end recovery to defense even a spawn of just five should be enough to top at the cap. Perhaps two recharge/end modifier/defense would do the trick. -
I like Taunt, I find I use it often and saves me to run left and right to pick agro.
On the other hand I was toying with the idea of maxing the defenses (at least using the planner) I can reach the 45% cap.
But for this I need Weave, and I already have Tough, this means I had to fit in Stamina despite EA since I'm playing Staminaless right now but it's a fine line which another power hungry toggle would not help.
I managed to fit it all but at the expense of Icicles which I find I quite like, being always surrounded by enemies and ticking an average of 10-12 seems pretty good.
Trouble is, all powers are counted (though only to level 38, I suppose I could fit it beyond but I'd rather have it now than who knows when (level 31 at the moment)) and to fit in Icicles only Taunt is dispensable.
So, to Taunt or not to Taunt?
The build is :

38) --> Greater Fire Sword==> Acc(38) Acc(39) Dmg(39) Dmg(39) Dmg(40) Rechg(40) -
Could someone point me to that AT defense guide mentioned a few posts back? Because apparently one *can* cap defense then.
-
Hmm, so Weave/Manouvers would only benefit a SR character since it would stack with its positional defences.
In that case Manouvers and CJ would only grant 7%. Not really worth it for two extra toggles. Might as well get Aid Self. -
Actually it's the latest updated SherkSilver planner, but it *does* have some glaring errors like the one you mentioned and Elude still refered as a skill that does not allow to attack or help allies while it is up.
Does anyone recomend a better/more up-to-date planner? -
So, I was testing over the hero builder and kept wondering why people said Weave sucked so bad and etc. Many compared it to Manouvers.
I'll grant that it's heavy and endurance/reward would be badly tipped, but lets not talk about that. With Stamina and Energy Absorption endurance is not really a problem for ice tanks.
According to the builder the defense bonus *is* small, but if it stacks with the ice defenses, then it should reach the cap.
As in :
Frozen armor + Glacial Armor + Wet Ice = 27.6% defense to lethal, smash, negative and energy.
Combat jumping = 3.9% to all, including (and this is my confusion) ranged, melee and AoE.
Manouvers = 2.5% to all, again including melee and ranged and AoE.
Weave = 7.8% to melee and ranged only.
The sum of this is : 34.4% to lethal, smash, energy and negative + 14.2% to melee and range + 6.4% to AoE.
I didn't include EA because it's a random thing, but we could say firing it at every spawn and granting 5% just to round numbers up so it could/would be 39%-40%
Now, does melee and ranged defense stack with lethal/smash/negative/energy?
Because if so it would reach the cap of 45% with some to spare. -
How sucky is sucky btw? My hero builder doesn't state the heal % of Life Drain, but it does recharge every 9 seconds once slotted with two of each, acc/recharge/heal.

Hmm, I could reamove Thunderclap and get Steamy Mist instead. I'm a bit loathe to remove the Leadership pools as their benefit is noticable.
Moonbeam VS Gloom.. Dunno.. I'm enjoying the snipe thus far, great to pull, and with FR making them bounce I can pick my target at leisure and fire.
