My biggest complaint is that we should have gotten the info on the Merit Changes BEFORE the patch went live.
-
Forget the "Have Nots". The "Have Nots" need to get over themselves. They'll eventually be "Haves", if they put in the time too.

[ QUOTE ]
...Travel powers, like all pool powers, have requirments that MUST be met to have them. All Tier 3 pool powers are available at level 14 (requirment one) so long as you have at least one of the Tier one or Tier two powers from that pool (requirment two).
Now what this reward is doing is ignoring not one but two requirements for the power selection. which sets a precedent for other potentially more game breaking additions/changes. For instance, what if you could buy stamina at level 6 for 5 bucks per toon? sure not the best example but the point is simple.
[/ QUOTE ]
The only "requirements" are the ones the Dev Team stipulate. There are powers and ATs that don't follow the same "requirements" as others. The Dev Team is making this decision, so your argument is invalidated by their wishes.
[ QUOTE ]
...I believe 60 month Vets deserve an early travel power, im not disputing the intent of the reward. im disputing the delivery, ignoring the rules of the game is steping into a dangerous area is all im saying. And if only they allow the level requirement to be bypassed we all walk away feeling good about it.
[/ QUOTE ]
No. YOU walk away feeling good about it. I'm certain a 60 month Vet getting this perk would like the option of skipping the prerequisite. In fact, this would make Teleporters much more desirable. A TP'er could skip TP Friend or TP Foe and take Hover or Fly instead.
I am glad you "agree" with the Devs that Vets should be able to get travel powers early, but that's not your call.
Stop presuming to know what all the "Non Vets" think.
[ QUOTE ]
...60 month vets get an early travel at 8 and non vets will have to at least be happy that 60 month vets cant bypass a power pick. everyone happy.
[/ QUOTE ]
This is what set me off....
How does a perk I get affect you, or others that think like you? Nothing is being taken away from you? Plus, if YOU put in 60 months, you get the same perk. It's this envious mentality that galls me.
[ QUOTE ]
...And id like to point out "AGAIN" that the temps are unenhancable and generally terrible compared to pool equivilants. They are also available to everyone, including 60 month vets, so we all can deal with having them until our travel power (at level 8 or 14, either or). So there is no point mentioning something that is accessible to all and subpar by comparison in everyway as an excuse to allow this precedent of imbalance.
[/ QUOTE ]
It is merely your opinion that temp travel powers are "subpar". Compared to the alternative (i.e. Running) all of the temp travel powers are superior.
People didn't demand that they receive these Vet Rewards. They were freely given. Every Vet Reward is available to every player that subscribes long enough to receive them. Do the time and you'll, eventually, receive the reward.
Like I said previously, stop the Vet Hate. -
[/ QUOTE ]
Granted, but the underlineing fact is this allows you to bypass not one but two requirements to get a travel power. Im willing to accept one bypass but not two. I dont think this is unreasonable, to be able to get your travel power at 8 with the Tier one requirement at 6.
My point is if this is let slide then what next; Allowing 6 year vets access to tier one and two secondarys at level 1? Giving Vets free Fitness? The point is this sets a standard for potentially imbalanced decisions making, so I implore you all to consider the compromise I have proposed.
[/ QUOTE ]
AGAIN.
Using what you think *might* be unbalancing perks in the future doesn't validate your position that the 60 month perk is unbalancing NOW.
AGAIN, you can get the functional equivalent at level 5/6 after a safeguard/mayhem mission. The Temp would last until you could get your own chosen power at 14.
60 month Vets had to work with Character after Character from I1 to I7/I8 without the ability to have a travel power to work The Hollows, KR, or Port Oaks with. Newer players benefit immensely from all the changes previously mentioned that were made to make this game even more accessible.
This is a nice perk that, in a post I7/I8 world, is not unbalancing. The prerequisites for the Travel Powers are pretty much so useful that people wouldn't skip them anyway.
Stop the Vet Hate..... -
[ QUOTE ]
I think that its wrong that something that was promised about vet powers is being broken. Of course, that's already happened with the booster packs, so why am I not surprised?
Its cool. I don't begrudge a cool benefit to playing the whole time. But its an unbalancing benefit. A lot of people started later - or started early, but couldn't always afford to play an MMO.
I'd be fine with the unlocking when the later powrs can be taken, but giving people free travel powers without taking the other powers, and at 6? Unbalancing.
[/ QUOTE ]
Ive read this sentiment quite a few times. Ive made this point before, but nobody has ever addressed it, so here it is again.
Pre I8, you might have had a legitimate concern about travel powers at 6 being unbalanced. That argument holds no weight since I8, because all newbie Heroes and Villains can get long lasting Temporary Travel Powers via Safeguard/Mayhem missions. These temps will last until a person can actually choose a power themselves at 14.
This is a huge convenience for a Vet, to be sure. But it is hardly the Game Breaking issue you, and others with your opinion, state it to be.
[ QUOTE ]
Also, what's next? Stamina at level 6 for the 72 month? Without having to take health and swift or hurdle
[/ QUOTE ]
I call Straw man on this one. Stamina at 6 vs. Travel at 6 is a huge overstatement on your part, I assume intentionally, to get people to see your side. Stamina at 6 might be unbalancing, but thats not the point were addressing now.
[ QUOTE ]
I think you guys are making a mistake. And instead of encouraging people, it might just leave you with nothing but the folks who've been able to afford to keep playing the entire time and started on day 1.
[/ QUOTE ]
Personal note: I was unemployed from April August 2004. I had a little money in savings, but wasnt eligible for unemployment. I was able to afford the $15.00 a month to play CoH until I got full time work again.
If you can afford a monthly internet connection, you most likely can afford the 15.00 a month it takes to play CoX. $15.00 equates to one less pizza or a few packs of smokes a month for your enjoyment.
As long as the game is running, anyone has a chance to be a 5 year vet. Put in the time, and youll get the same rewards as the current vets.
I can only speak for myself, but Vet rewards HAVE kept me from straying to other MMOs, as I like having perks others don't have.
Why does everyone (not a Vet) get so bent about long time users getting some perks? -
[ QUOTE ]
How many old timers are there still around to be able to get the 60 months Vet Reward during this year anyway? I'm due for late June.
[/ QUOTE ]
I've been here since 8 days into Retail.
Haven't ever left. -
[ QUOTE ]
Speaking as someone with the 54 month vet badge, I really, really, really hope that 60 is the last vet badge.
They're a horrible idea and largely give things most players should have off the bat (ie boxing gear) and, let's be honest here, people who have been playing long enough to get the higher end badges would have been playing without them (and you didn't 'earn' anything folks, stop acting so superior and stuck up just because you've played a game longer - it's a game, if you feel spending money to earn things in it makes you better/deserving of these rewards somehow, you have a sad perspective on life), and realistically, given the lifespan of most MMOs, it's highly dubious that any player that starts now will even see the 60 month badge before the game is retired, even if they play for the entire rest of the game's lifespan with no break.
[/ QUOTE ]
Why?
Why can't NC Soft be kind to the people that have given them so much of their time and money on CoH? Of course, they aren't obligated to do so, but some Veterans (like myself) appreciate it.
At 60 months, you are looking at about 900.00 or so in Fees alone, not to mention Retail boxes, DVD Editions, Collectors Editions, and the various Perk packages. (Wedding, Cyborg, Valkyrie, etc...)
I'd like to think my contributions to the success of this game (via my money, time, and referrals) have contributed in some small way to the games success. To me, Vet Rewards are NC Soft's way of saying "Thank You".
I wish the "Vet Hate" would stop. -

Massive, epic FAIL. Something so profoundly, massively balance altering as being able to skip a travel prereq being doled out as a veteran reward? I thought these were supposed to be perks and conveniences, not ways for vets to ignore the power rules the rest of us have to follow.
Seriously, this is an absolutely insane change to give to just a small segment of the population. Given that this reward kicks in at 5 years, it's frankly unlikely that most will *ever* get to this reward during the lifetime of the game.
And, yes, I'm mostly annoyed that I doubt I'll ever get to use this. I have about 8 billion builds that would benefit immensely from being able to drop the travel prereq. But, seriously, this is by far the biggest thing they've ever given out in a vet reward, and frankly I think it's way *too* big to give out as a vet reward. I obviously can't say for sure how I'd react if I *was* in line to get this - I know I'd be quite interested in the options it would open up - but I'd like to think that I'd find this a bit iffy even then. Allowing just a small portion of the population to ignore such a fundamental rule seems more than a bit unfair.
[/ QUOTE ]
Yep.
Things like this will only alienate new players and make them feel like they can never compete or catch up.
Things like this don't encourage me to stay subscribed, in fact, they only re-enforce why I should not waste my money staying subscribed because there's no way I'll ever be able to "catch up" and have access to half this stuff. I'll always be perpetually years behind everyone else, even if I were to stay subscribed permanently right now from this point on.
[/ QUOTE ]
*****Sigh. Here we go.*****
I'd agree with your statement IF we DIDN'T have Temp Powers that virtually anyone can get (Via Inf or Safeguard/Mayhem issue) that did the same thing.
It's not nearly the "Big Deal" this would have been if those those Temps weren't there. Plus, HEATs get Travel at Lvl 1, and it doesn't kill balance at all.
Too much drama..... -
******Waits for the incessant whining from non-vets.******
-
That is true, as I once got a Purple from a 47 Fortunata in CoV. At first, I thought it was a bug.
-
Thank you, Synapse.
*Edit* You beat me to it!!!!!! GRRRRRR!!!!
Subjectively, Merits have indeed sapped the fun out of the game for me. Truthfully, I haven't even begun earning them because soloing my Arch Blaster and my Khelds just plain isn't fun. I've been running PUGs/Radios/Papers and getting 0 merits for them.
TFs are a bore without the random recipe roll. Posi is STILL too torturous to run, Dr Q. even more so.
I haven't left, and don't plan to, but I echo the "grindy" sentiments mentioned in this thread.
If merits won't be rolled back or made an addition to the reward table, find a way for a TEAM to earn Merits other than running TFs. -
I too am echoing Memphis Bill's sentiments.
IMO, ANY TF that doesn't offer AT MINIMUM enough Merits for an SO drop is undervalued.
Katie seems to be the poster child for TF reform. I understand your side of it. But, I cannot get over the fact that fighting 10 CONSECUTIVE AVs nets you so few merits.
"Risk vs. Reward" has always been a mantra with the Dev team since the very beginning. If forcing us to fight the 10 AVs in Katie wasn't enough "Risk" to make the TF more challenging, fix the TF before nerfing the "Reward".
I may be in the minority, but I'd rather see Katie and Eden made unplayable until fixed than played with these nerfed rewards. -
Thanks Castle for addressing this issue. I am definitely one of those people that has been turned off from the current iteration of PvP. I am glad you finally have the staff to fix this.
To everyone else that is upset over the wholesale changing of powers in the Epics, adapt. Cross faction PvP has never been equitable. Villains have had to "make do". Melee ATs on both sides have been inferior in PvP since its inception.
As upsetting as it might be for some to lose power choices from an optional pool, that has to be weighed against the need to have reasonably balanced PvP. CoX has never had that.
PvP has always had a different ruleset. Blasters were buffed while Tankers and Scrappers had to be weakened in I4 for balance. Villain PPPs were balanced against each other across ATs, but were not balanced versus Hero Epics.
Now NCNC has the resources to address these glaring PvP issues. I applaud them for it. It's been long enough. Too long, in fact. -

Can characters only use a limited number of Earned Respecs over their careers? Maybe I'm crazy, but I thought at one point a max number of 4 (or some other number) earned respecs could be used by any character.
I seem to remember when the TV trial came out that we were only able to earn respecs from it up to 3 or 4 times, regardless of the level of the trial, or your security level. I could very well be wrong. If I am, then the amount of vet reward respecs would certainly make more sense to me.
[/ QUOTE ]
One can use Vet or Purchased respecs, along with any other respecs one can earn via trials.
I know this from personal experience, as I went through 4 Vet Respecs and 2 earned respecs trying to get my most recent character (Fortunata) just right.
I can still earn (and will use) the Patron Arc respec to finalize things. -
Cool and all, but LH, is there a plan to sell CoX cards for just 15.00 a month? Will the Tabula Cards work on a CoH account too?
Some people (like me) would prefer to pay with game cards, but the extra 5.00 a month for the jet doesn't justify the expense to me.
Especially on the Villain side, as there are repeatable missions to get a Temp flight pack in game already. -
Me too.
Regular flight on my Lvl 50 Tank. -
Can anyone help me make a toon that looks something like this!!!!!
I'm challenged when making female characters.
Thanks for any help you can give me. -

Yes, seriously.
You guys NEVER come to the East Coast.
I've been begging for you guys to come to Dragon Con for ages now.
C'mon! Southern Hospitality is all that! -
I'm thinking Presence on a /MM Blaster might actually have some usefulness. Stacking Fears to hold a Boss. A type of "Ghetto Hold".

Yeah I am totally excited, but yet totally PO'd about this. I would like to see a red name explain why heros get cold and therm and villains get double storm. No emp. And if they even once thought hmmm how would this affect PVP. A bots storm mm sounds fun. but cmon now.
[/ QUOTE ]
Because /emp is lame and simplistic?
/ducks
...
I'm quite glad villains don't get emp, it's too much of a crutch for people still stuck in wow mode. I think thermal is a much more in line with what a set with heals should be in the CoH/CoV world.
I love all the pvp whining, keep it up! Man, I wish they'd never added pvp to this game; the amount of whining clamoring for pvp was so much less than all the random post-pvp whining.
For those that keep saying that villains got shafted - as far as new toy wise, remember that villains have the VEATs this issue too.
[/ QUOTE ]
Don't use VEATS as a reason for anything.
VEATS only made it into I12 because of all the $$$ NCNC got from selling Wedding packs. VEATS weren't even initially planned for I12.
You're forgetting that VEATS only got Villains EQUAL to Heroes. Khelds have been around FOREVER.
If I was a Villain only person, or a die hard PvP'er, I'd be through the roof. Even as a primarily PvE player, I'm still a little sore. -
Have to agree with the feeling that Villain sets that Heroes got pale to what Villains got from Heroes.
I see Cold/Psy/Power Defenders mauling anything and everything Villain side in PvP.
Villain VEATS need to be REALLY good to make up for this. -

For what it's worth I've always had the other new vet rewards on the day they rolled out. Used to be ppl showed up to Atlas when the new rewards rolled out to show of their vet status. For me it was my way of saying "Hey I might only me of moderate skill, but at least I'm persistent. Or at perhaps It just sez I've had no life for longer then most
.
Anyway I still have not seen the new one yes, I suppose I'm waiting for some time in late April then.

Same here. I didn't have it either, even though I used to be one of those people that got their rewards early.
I even /bugged it when I got them too soon.
Maybe they're on their way to fixing the early release thing.
