    Any regrets?

    This.

Although I also have the regret that I didn't join later. The game's too big a time sink for an addictive personality and I used to be so productive before I joined...

I was aware of it for about a year before I signed up - I'd seen the double page spreads in the comics back then, but I was a bit "meh" about MMOs. I'd never played one, and I was frankly a tad mistrustful about a subscription based game.

Then I saw it on the shelf whilst browsing a game shop and figured for something like £18 I could buy it and play for a month - if it didn't work nothing ventured, nothing gained...

I get my 4 year reward in 3 weeks with only one month missed ever.
Spooky - I could have written that pretty much word for word, except I didn't miss a month and got 4 years last week...

Guess the shelf presence worked for both of us (even though we're both UK based iirc).

I usually see zone revamps/makeovers used morewith reference to just 3 areas:
    - Dark Astoria
    - Boomtown
    - The Shadow Shards

Each of these has very, very little content in it. If it wasn't for Taskforces sending you there, and the occasional GM hunt, these 3 areas would hardly ever see anyone.

It's not really a case of people doing all the content in a zone, getting tired of it and wanting new content. It is more a case of "hey devs you've got these great settings with no reason for anyone to go there - so give us a reason".

Saying that, Boomtown could probably do with changes more like Faultline - and that would take a far bit of time.

These are pretty much my thoughts as well.

In the past haven't they restricted transfers to the 2 most populous NA servers? If so, and they did this again in the event of a list merge, it certainly wouldn't be a case of all EU players transferring to them.

Of course I'd fully expect some long-term fallout (of current EU players) and a short-term disaster as I'd expect players to disperse throughout the bigger NA servers upon a list merge in order to see what they're like. The worst scenario (regarding any EU 'community') would be if a dispersal happened like this and a signifiant proportion of players decided not to return to their old servers... but that would be individual choice.

Heck if we wanted to try out the US servers upon a merge it'd maybe be better if we tried to do soen masse to one or two agreed servers.

A list merge only kills off the Union/Defiant servers if their player base doesn't feel it's worth saving and lets it die.

(Not forgetting Zukunft/Vigilance - but I wouldn't presume to have any real idea of what their players would prefer to do).

I'd rather sit on a tropical beach playing CoX than work. But I still work.

To be honest, if I was a CoX dev then I'd rather design new zones than give old zones a makeover as well. A new zone allows you to go wild and produce something totally new. Revamping an old zone pretty much requires you to keep some semblance of the old zone.

If you were a dev which would you rather do?
    • Design something with only engine limitations restraining you, and which you know will get good press; or
    • Design something that has a whole load of other restrictions and player preconceptions attached, and may not create much of a buzz outside of existing players?
Even without the publicity factor, designing without limits allows more fun/creativity than redesigning around existing limits.

Doesn't dual builds help hell of a lot with this? Have your team build and your solo build?

Even an empath defender should be ok if one build is built for soloing. Of course they won't level as quickly as the self-sufficient scrapper or brute, but they won't be unable to solo.

And as for the dark/rad... get them to 10 and run TFs. That should see some pretty quick levelling... (admittedly that should be easier when new Posi arrives - but even as it is Posi isn't that bad).

Or even stick a shout out for a regular super team...

i.e. the biggest problem is having a team build and then having to rely on getting PuGs. If the population was reasonable then it shouldn't be a problem, but just now it is - but there are ways to plan around that.

About 3-4 years ago I was leading teams regularly during the day and there were 2 regular team mates who were retired and in their 60s (not actually sure if one was 70s+ - I know that they'd been retired for many years).

I know that one of them was still playing a few weeks back.

In his original post the U was lower case, so acheived wthout shift, unless shift was used to unshift capslock... Besides, I take the phrase "no u!" to indicate that he has no U key at all - and the key tends to be used regardless of case.

Of course, he may have copied and pasted his U from another post... I'm waiting to see if he makes a 'no Ctrl-V' post at anytime.

And besides, you spelled 'defense' wrong.
Actually that may be debatable - as all things are if you like a debate.

AFAIK defence tends to be used more in British English, whereas I tend to notice defense more in US english. And it happens that I'm English but was referring to an American sitcom referring to an American courtcase...

Having said that, legal uses of english sometimes use specific spellings and I'm not even sure whether the 'accepted' spelling in British courts is defence or defense.

Of course defence and defense are synonyms in both US and British English, so I would still be perfectly correct in using 'defence' if the original Southpark script used that spelling.

    Tell me it's Judgment next...

Morning-wise in the UK at 10:00AM it'll still be 02:00AM in the morning for them. These aren't exactly accurate, I can't remember the precise time changes but we are forgetting the rather large time-scale difference.

    Fury
Other than the odd week which differs by an hour (due to switching to/from summer time on differnt dates) it's East coast is UK-5, West Coast is UK-8.

Ok we won't be sync'd up whatever we do, but...
    • What about weekends? By lunchtime in Europe the early birds in the US should be playing.
    • What about the players on both sides of the pond who play at unusual hours for their locale?
However you cut it, a list merge (or some other way to play with people on the other server list) can only increase the pool of available players.

Oh ok - strictly speaking it could leave the player-pool the same, if the play times of all players in the US list have absolutely no intersection with the playtimes of EU-server players... But wattatheoddzonthat???

It's not so much when they "won't go along with the plot" as when they realise that the plot has changed to mean they need to die to maintain the illusion. (The accident comes first - heat shielding failure iirc)

Funnily enough it was on UK terrestrial TV last week - though in the early 80s it was one of the first films I had recorded on my family's first VCR. I must have seen Capricorn One and China Syndrome at least 100 times each...
  11. Who or what is that about to obliterate the sidekick in the 'not the face' image?

Strangely I like the idea of 'The closer you get to failing, the better the end reward.' Would be interesting to get rewarded more for making things difficult for yourself then pulling the win out of the bag.

Much like freem and retro-CoH I think I want this... Is it too late to abandon GR for this?

You must have a U and as such no u is a blatantly false statement and therefore invalidates your entire argument about the origins of CO and CoX. It obviously follows that the games are made by different companies.

I think that's right... I never did quite master the chewbacca defence.

I wouldn't say "quality" is neccessarily the right word to use.

These are games - assuming that the potential purchaser has the budget available they become a viable purchase/subscription whilst they are fun and playable.

Neither is so appalling that they are unplayable or particularly tricky or difficult to play. Neither is so bug-ridden that it stands out in the market of MMOs. So neither can really be said to be poor quality.

And on the fun side... that's subjective. There'll be people who prefer CO and people who prefer CoX. Neither is absolutely correct in believing the game they prefer is better, but both are no doubt correct in believing their game to be better for them.

Of course the number of people who would play an MMO is limited. The number who'd play a superhero MMO is further limited. The amount of money available for subs from this pool of potential customers is limited.

But, given that you can't absolutely declare one better than the other, the available pie is certainly big enough to sustain 2 games with different approaches/feels.
    Quote:
That said, I think having a direct competitor is a good thing (for both games). It fosters innovation and impells the developers to work harder and faster to make their product good. While CO isn't my cup of tea, I would rather that it stick around.
It's only having to dash off to RL business that stopped me putting similar to this in my earlier post. Competition helps keep both sets of devs on their toes.

    I can smell the fear.

    Good Job Devs!
Look at just about any game forums and you'll see posts asking for any feature ever featured in any other game* and just as many posts asking the devs not to develop the same feature...

Though, perhaps somewhat biased, I reckon it's fair to say that the CoX boards have never (or very rarely) been as bad for this as most other MMO boards.

Both CO and CoX are good games and different enouh to both have a place in the world - there's no real need for either to fear the other.

I know Dark Mirror is CoX I17. I was contrasting to the issue of the top cow comic called Dark Mirror which was, iirc, Issue 16.

    17 > 16

Therefore devs behind the Top Cow dictated schedule if we just compare the issue numbers attached to both comic and in-game issue.

    It wasn't a 100% serious post.

Maybe they have to be different people for some (as yet unknown/unpublished) part of the story...

What if they are nearly the same but from different dimensions/realities and so not the same? What if the midnighters aren't sending us back in time (even if they think that they are) but are sending us back in time and to an alternate reality?

If that turns out to be the case, then maybe Romulus is a clue.

Maybe they'll resurrect the CCG... I quite enjoyed it.
