Try breaking the sprite down both in color count and in size. Pixel Work is not intended to be "large scale"; keep to that regiment. 8-Bit, 16-Bit and 24-Bit were the original basis as things progressed. Multiple items of varying types can enlarge your color count, but when we're talking one character alone, try and stick to 24 and under. Kyo has four in his pants, three in his coat, and three separated between his feet, belt, and hair, plus the possibility that one of those colors was extended to a facial shadow (I'ven't the desire to break open anything to grab the color codes for comparison).
You personally may not feel a large sense of design accomplishment in a simple jacket, but when you're working to confine a character into as few elements as possible, a jacket becomes a big thing. I've an old collection of animated sprites in the hundreds, and the continual design aspect in each is simplicity. How many elements can you bring together in a small, 24 color environment without over cluttering your piece.
Light sources and attitude are developed in that same confining atmosphere. Hard edges created by definitive differences between the dark, the flat, and the highlight in an area give the direction. Four black pixels, one white, and three tan define Kyo's eye and give it part of the character's attitude with a notion to a scowl along with the stance. Your brute has probably over 20 per eye of one color. You generally only want three sources of color per area, sometimes four for clarity. The flat color, the highlight, and the shadow. Some cases for brighter light sources you may put a secondary highlight (like straight white).

And, since I just feel like randomly bringing this up. I found these ingenious inventions at the art supply store today. They're called "Artist Trading Cards". The stock is a collection of 2.5"x3.5" packs (5-20 pieces depending on the stock) from bristol board, watercolor board, canvas, etc. I think in total there's 10-15 different surfaces, envelopes; even tin cases for a few more bucks. Has anyone else seen these yet? I believe they're available online as well.
After having seen them, I couldn't help but pick up a back of bristol and a few envelopes with the thought that it'd be pretty fun to bust out 20 of these things and do physical art-card trades with people of/for different random "ATC's" of art. Drop the card into its envelope into a bigger one, drop a stamp on it and into the mail and swap with anyone and collect the stuff. I really like the idea.
Besides, how awesome would it be to bust out this collection of cards from comic singles, sketches, to mini-acrylic blobs, scenes, etc, that are entirely unique.
Now if only copics didn't suck on smooth bristol. -

In a sense, something like this has no surprise value for me, but merely enforces the belief that anyone can create "Art". In Children, they have the capacity to see the simplicity and structure of objects in relation to geometric shapes and how to build up from the basics; and when taught at that same early age in an environment that grips them, you get kids like Kieron. Honestly, wouldn't it be great if more kids were given the same opportunity? I'm almost saddened by the fact that one or two kids squirm into public view because they clung to an unexpected ability, got the tutelage and let it fly and it's a "rare thing"--that should be something we see more often.

So, I posted this over on DA, but where else is one to turn but the communities they devle into to make sure they know about stuff that gets posted randomly on the internet by crazy people like myself.
But, I was thinking to myself: "Self, LJ is doing a lot of crazy output lately, you know that?" and I responded, "Srs." Self was not placated though, "And he's stealing all the moneyz!" Well, being the greedy little artist that I am, I couldn't stand by and not try to be equally as insane. He's trying to buy a a Television. I cannot say I wouldn't try it myself (but wait...I kind of am, aren't I?) Alas, my poor monitor is dieing (painfully but gratefully slow) and the world of CoH and Art are being closed off from me as time progresses and I am unable to fix (ie: purchase replacement) the issue.
So, down to the nitty gritty, I had to ask myself: "Self, can you really top such an awesome sale like that for full color busts?"
And I said: No, but I'll definitely try. So I'm offering to anyone who wants it, full color full body single character shots for an earth shattering !!! (Well, yeah, DA has that special info, silly my trying to post it here), unlimited supply (no joke, if you want to keep purchasing them, I'll keep making them). If the graces of the patrons see fit to order in mass quantity, I will even try and output at an equal pace with the possibility of large volumes over a 48 hours period once a week. I'm all over some world breaking art-producing records.

Hmmm, took a look at that build John, the downside is that it has less recharge than my current working build, and I am not a fan of Tier 9s in general (my first melee toon was a /regen, i5 era). The upside: Dark Consumption. Currently I'm running without it, but I don't have Grant Cover yet and I don't run Tough....once I get some of the level 50 sets that should mitigate some of my end costs (I'm 43 and still have quite a few SOs), most of my recovery boosts are already in place though, so I'll have to see...might have to go back to the drawing board.
Some interesting stuff people come up with, mainly slotting choices my literal mind just wouldn't think of.

Attack chain is Smite > MG > Smite > Siphon Life (Standard Issue Uber Chain) while Hasten is active. Yes there is 15 Second delay in Hasten but considering a DM/SD can take the average AV down in three to four minutes saturated, 15 Seconds is less than concerning in the long run of a four minute fight. To achieve Perma-Hasten there'd have to be another ~30% Global in the build somewhere and it cuts too much in too many areas to attempt something like that without a) taking away from your Positional Defenses, or b) ending up with a load of stuff you'll never use, but mostly "a".
I'm also one of the few who take a less than franken-notable route on Siphon Life to push its recharge down even further while maintaining everything else except the Heal%. With 317% Regen through 149% Max HP, 13% each cycle on Siphon Life becomes more than sufficient ontop of everything else going on (but as they say "YMMV"). EPS is also sufficient to maintain your attack chain (I think it came out for a considerable length, been a while since I checked, but Dark Consumption readily fixes any concern anyway).
Now...if I were to throw a Glad 3% IO in there...heh, that would be another story and a Mid's Update and turmoil and time and...I just wont go there

Okay, so there's not technically a "Prose" section to the forums (and if there were, I never noticed it). We do technically have "Role Playing" where stuff may get tossed from time to time, but the following has neither anything to do with "RP" nor the desire to get lost, hounded, or otherwise in that maelstrom. In either direction, I value the honest opinion of the art community far more than I may feedback I may have received from the RP Community (not to say that some of you may actually rep in both places, I just feel more homely here). Ontop of the fact that this section is now "Fan Creations", I'm deeming that enough grounds to cover "Prose" as well. And while not entirely "Fan" since it's not being derived off anything directly involving CoX, it's the only place I can come to ask.
I know, totally rambling.
While some of you will still even catch this on Deviantart as watchers, either way. The following excerpt I'm linking to Here is a piece I've been fiddling with involving the potential of a 500-600 page "first book". This small piece is a driving directional force of inspiration that I'd like to finally get stabilized in its third variant and I'd like the earnest critique of [you guys/gals] for it. Granted "serious critique" isn't normally tossed around here, I'd still like it, whether on Deviant Art or PM here. The excerpt isn't miles long by any stretch, but in what might cover the first three or so pages in a book, I need to know if you're going to put the book back on the shelf or take it home and delve into it a bit; and I need to know if I've got that. I know not everyone judges a book in the same manner, but that's all I'm giving [for now].
And just for sake of saying, in a long road cut short, many of the characters that become involved in the story were developed outside of CoX, found manifestation in the game, found development as a character, and are being ported back out into their original environment as enhanced personalities; and in the long run the story itself is directed and the kind of fan base that would follow a game like CoX, so what better direction to seek input than from the same demographic, as it were.
Edit: If you're really eager to try and snag a few more bits into "Origins", there's a section in my DA Gallery with a few pieces that happen to have additional extensions/variants/excerpts on the beginning and or basis to coincide with this particular piece. While they definitely don't all coincide, it's still there if you're curious to extend critique to the more of the idea than just this one piece.
