Quote:First: This. There is a fine line between the Art Teacher and the Art Critique. One may not be able to do what the other can, but both are equal in their ability to look into a piece and constructively break it down. Art is created under instruction, continued under desire, and displayed under humility. Art requires an artist to be capable of taking the good with the bad, like a seesaw; you have to balance the act. Some art is more free from the strain of commentary, but in a realm like here were art is attempting to mimic "reality" (ie: physical form, pose, position, perspective, etc), than we will be scrutinized, even if no one actually says anything.I've learned that there are people who are going to give you criticism that you can ignore, but at the end of the day a regular person can tell you when your hands need work, when one eye looks too far off center, etc.; simple anatomy is often a very easy thing for a regular person to pick up on.
I've been from the dirt end of inability to where I am now and still humbly say that I'm not that good, and I never will be because art is an imperfect dream of perfection and has levels of acceptable. Do I think I'm far enough along to charge for pieces? Yes, but not enough to say "That'll be $300 for your con sketch, Mr. Broke" like a rare set of artists have charged in the past.
Artist need criticism, they're like Editors. Every piece I've done in the last few months goes through a filter before I even take it past pencils; that being the Mrs. whom glances at each piece and often will find something that to her eye appears incorrect that a technical eye would understand is correct, but may not visually feel that way. It may be physically possible, but if the pose still looks like someone's pulling a hernia, it may not really be what you want conveyed (unless, you know, that really is what you're trying to do). For constructive feedback I'm more likely to turn to my wife for guidance than someone else because she'll be honest. Believe me when I say I've heard the words "I'm sorry honey, but that sucks." It doesn't dishearten me to hear it, it allows me to understand that there's something wrong that I'm not seeing; and when I can't find where to fix it from, then I'll go and find someone who does know the technical side, and find advice from that perspective to fix it.
You can't know where you're going without knowing where you've been.
Quote:...which lead's me on to pricing. To me you put your price on what your willing to work for. I organize my prices so they equate to an hourly rate and estimate how long it will take me to do something. For example: My bust's, and charge accordingly. You get into trouble if you charge for a finished piece. I found when I did everything for a fairly cheap price I'd spend weeks on a picture for an amount that was not worth it at all for me which led to all sorts of problems.
At the end of the day, though, its what your willing to pay for that matters. I charge what I'm willing to work for. You either pay it or find someone cheaper; same goes with Sorah; same goes with anyone.
While not so much thinking on an hourly rate but more in an interest of time subjectively, an artist should (and often do) charge based on what they deem the value of a piece is worth of their time and effort to produce. In many cases this is on an even scale of Personal Skill Value vs. Cost. As in what an artist values their abilities at, and that the more they see their abilities develop, the more they'll often charge. They may be able to produce a full figured sketch in ten minutes with a little ink splash and charge you $50 whereas the next guy might do something similar, but take an hour and charge $15.
Essentially the number one thing anyone buys from an artist is Confidence. How confident is the artist in their work and how confident am I in their work that I'm willing to pay for it.
No one pays for skill, that's a misnomer. Skill implies some innate hidden god-given talent that required no effort. Everyone starts off with box houses and stick figures, just some of us pursued it further than others. Giving the artist practice, they've put time into their abilities and honed them to a lethal-artistic weapon, and when they've got the confidence in it, you'll start paying for it.
Now, personally I believe there should be a ground floor before a price becomes a bit outrageous, but even corporate/commercial artists have their rates. Speaking of, where's Doug? He's the only one I could tip off the top of my head what a company like Wizards would fork out for a single painting. Or there's Sorah, whom is also "in the biz", but in a different industry, and has her own Confidence Value and charges accordingly.
Edit: For the reason of just being a fork in the side on the topic since it was brought up. A Plumber is not always good at his/her job, and a bum off the street may actually know what they're talking about. Where does one learn but not through experience? Someone may not be licensed in a hired position, but that doesn't discount that they have some knowledge of value. Now, I'm not saying you should call a plumber to fix your septic tank, but at the same time if I can save a buck by calling a friend to help replace the U-Joint under my sink, you better believe I will.
Everyone learns from somewhere, and these days the average joe/jane can also get in on it since most community colleges have classes on most industry trades (HVAC/Electric/Plumbing) that only cost a few hundred for a couple weeks and drop you into an apprenticeship somewhere for field training. While totally a different topic from Art Instruction to Art Critique, the point of view is the same. There's not much separating one from the other past a license or degree that may not always have any true value in expertise or knowledge.

Quote:Haha! I was searching through for ages until I realised, you have accolades toggled on which gave you an extra 25% Psi defense, Elusive mind I think.
I think this build is probably a little out of my price range, how much has it cost you?
Also, you don't have hasten in that build, is your 52% recharge bonus plenty? What's the lowest global recharge I'd need to drop hasten? And one last thing, you don't have CP and your recovery and endurance drain aren't fantastic, so what's this build like on endurance?
Ah well, that explains it. I was far too tired this morning to look for the issue and knew it seemed strange but I was really only verifying it was the right build in general.
In concern to the endurance, global recharge, Conserve Power, and Hasten... You don't need Hasten. Sounds scandalous, no? Seriously though, I've never taken Hasten on a Spines/DA as I've never had an actual use for it. The general recharge you can achieve out of sets and bonuses is more than sufficient to cover your needs. Even without global bonuses I never felt Hasten was necessary. Spine Burst and Throw Spines on their own had always been enough to cycle through. Endurance on the other hand, you can never have too much of that. Generally an additional 20ish% Global Recovery sways most "Endurance Blues". You wont be performing any miraculous AV Solo's or anything, but the rest of the game will continue to be your oyster. Keeping a few extra inspirations will always be a bonus to maintaining your runs, of course, but there is--regrettably--a limit to how much recovery you can squeeze into a build while keeping other things consistent. That and I have had CP in my own build at one point and realized that the only times I ever actually used it were either when I severely over extended into for-sure failure (see: Death), or if I was Soul Transferring into a bad situation and CP balanced getting up to speed enough that I wasn't in that bad situation any longer. So one or two events out of fifty just didn't prove its worth.

Quote:What? :S
EDIT: Someone brought it to my attention that they think you are referring to the photos on my DeviantArt by photographer Nathan Lemon. I'm not sure if you are insinuating that they are fake or whatever, but ummm...wtf? LOL
Uh...er, no. I was referring to your workAs in: Here, Here, and Here
As for your...wait, you have photos in there? Hadn't noticed those, well, until you brought them up; and in either case I'm sure the question I have would seem offhanded since you don't know me and that's an entirely different topic.
(...nice photos by the way)

Quote:What? Are you saying you don't intentionally run into a mob and face plant just so you can pop Soul Transfer every once and a while to have some purpose in life?Spines/DA has the advantage of OG and Dark Regen, but Spines/Elec isn't going to be plagued by the endurance woes of Spines/DA (which inhibit survivability in fights that last longer than 10 seconds) plus, as isn't often mentioned, Spines/Elec would actually have the ability to gain some measure of additional survivability from endurance draining. Power Sink + Lightning Field is actually quite the impressive secondary mitigation, not to mention that Energy damage is significantly more common than Negative Energy damage. Plus, Power Surge is actually a useful tier 9.
I thought everyone did that!
On a more serious note, I know that endurance theft can be a very effective form of mitigating incoming damage with all the time I've spent on a Sapper (Kin/Elec), but keeping it that way for every mob on the regular may not be so clean cut. Spindles just have more at their disposal to deal with incoming damage (and flat out preventing it in the first place). Although, not saying it's perfect, but I don't see the endurance issues to being so difficult on mine. Having zero endurance concerns will definitely be a welcome change though, and possibly be the very factor that springs Spilectrics into fame over Spindles. -
Quote:However, my issue is this...(and I will quote one of my mentors):
"I can't afford a Rolls Royce...doesn't mean I'm going to write them a letter telling them that their prices are ridiculous. I just don't buy the car."
I have an idea. I'll render up whatever vehicle you want so long as you keep working out scandalous shots and we'll both pretend their realAnd if that doesn't work, maybe I can threadjack this back on track and see if that doesn't help get some more pretties to look at.
-
Quote:Maybe on par with a Spines/Fire, but I don't think it'll match the survivability of a Spines/DA. With some nice metal spines and some tinted electricity though, I might survive another fifty levels of things exploding from my torso just to watch things sizzle on skewers. I will agree that overall it'll probably run a lot smoother than it's competitors for the blue bar!Well, considering it's got resistance, a self heal, and lots of endurance management tools, I'd probably put my money on Kat/Elec or BS/Elec. Kat/* and BS/* provide the +def that */Elec is naturally lacking and */Elec brings the +rech and endurance management that make those sets enjoyable without having to use their bad attacks to keep their blue bars up.
Of course, Spines/Elec could just as easily be a dangerous combo. It's got the endurance maintenance tools to work around Spines' high end costs and a damage aura to combine with Quills. It's not gonna be crazy survivability, but it'll definitely be a farming machine on par (and possibly eclipsing) Spines/Fire and Spines/DA.
Spires, Spindles and Spilectrics galore! -
This is the last build I'd worked on with a defensive focus, all but S/L is above 20% (From typed to positional) with soft capped Psi...although don't recall where that came from. Build was last touched 4/22/09.

Aye! Just because "Yay!" sounds to giddily for my taste.
It's great as a fallback on your road to the great soft cap beyond, and even then if you get stuck cascading into failure. Doesn't require any extra slots, nice place to store a +3% Unique, and almost any considerable scenario it's easy to get it into a build. -
Quote:Hey, you never know. We could go Sue Storm on some folks and start crushing them between invisible walls.I forgot to mention, that'd be your scrapper primary.

Crushing Bubble: So cute and cuddly until your opponent bleeds. Does Smashing/Energy damage and immobilizes the enemy. -
May be a bit out dated now, but the original builds and slotting are still viable, just possible to improve upon them in some areas now. Budget wise though, it'll probably be on target. Spines/DA Guide I haven't looked into a Spindle in a while but I know that it's possible to squirm 20-25% global defense into them pretty easily now a days.
-
Go to the source! Pyro Mania He totally ebay'd that stuff and we missed it!

Actually I don't think I'd mind having some personal force field for melee toons. Bubbles, Repel and Knockdown effects would bring a whole new level to Scrapper Control.

Lets drag this kicking and screaming back on track. I'll see your "No Weave", and raise you all Aid Self.

Okay, I'll bite for the "Disagreement".
No, I don't want Scrappers to have Ninjitsu. I entirely refuse to accept this as a possibility.
If it happens I'd be forced. FORCED I tell you. To delete my Elec/Nin Stalker and reroll it into a Scrapper and the thought of wasting all those levels because the Developers decided to beat me spastically with a proliferation would sadden me.
Save the Stalker, don't Proliferate.

First I just want to point out the redundancy since Sucker Punch's already does everything that's being sought after (Builds seperated by AT, Primary/Secondary along with Global Submits, dates, ratings, comments, etc). It may not be as streamed and data-loaded as Mid's, but in an online format for mass consumption it does the job just fine.
As for going as far as setting up something like a forum section filled with build resources, again feeling a sense of redundancy. There's guides out there that cover a lot of what people look for insight on. They may not be all up to the same level of snuff, but when it comes down to it most should get the general concept. When people start coming down and knocking on individual doors for builds and assistance that's where the breakdown is. There shouldn't be five pages each week, almost on a rotating schedule, of people asking for help on "X/X" This or Y/Z" That when the basic help was only a single search off.
Even spoon feeding power-builds lacks merits 75% of the time. Werner, Shred, Powerforge, just tossing some of the more hounded AV builds that come to mind, all have builds that people come asking about. Some willingly share, others prefer to keep it reclusive to their needs. Even I felt that there may not be much worth in sharing prime-builds until I got over the fact that there wasn't much sense in my hoarding it. Even when we all share these power builds, most of the time no one takes the advice given and gimps themselves to floor because they'd rather have five power pool attacks than sticking to their primary. (Not a literal interpretation, just an example).
Really I just don't see the point in it. Too often find that when someone asks "Can I have ur uber buildz plz", they're really asking "Can I see what you did so I can say I don't like it and do whatever I planned on doing wrong the first time, anyway?" Everyone's intitled to their experimental, conceptual and tweaked builds, but what use is it for those of us who understand and can break down the game into numbers and builds when we'd otherwise just get turned aside. Most of the time we're better off just accepting the way things are and just come out of the shadows every once and a while and push a few small bits of advice here and there and introduce new concepts slowly over time. That's the way the dev's do it, and it's worked out so far
Yes, I'm totally playing the Old Man Card, waving my claws and screaming for you young whipper snappers to get off my lawn. Back in my day we didn't have Mid's or "Real Numbers" and we did just fine with our Single Origins. Now you all want Inventions and Data Mining!
Breaking it down to a single point: We could kick dirt into the wind all day long but in the end all the builds we could possibly throw at anyone will never amount to the same experience and knowledge earned by just opening the program and reading what's right there. Grab one of the spreed sheets that float around every so often for DPS/EPS/Attack Chain, plug in the numbers and roll the dice. I'd really hate to log into the game tomorrow and the first thing I see is two people arguing over the same sets because one has a Shred Monkey build and one has a Iggy Build.

Quote:I kind of found the Fire Aura with Charged Armor running on my Blaster Homage to be more like the show when compared. Could go either way though, really. Does give me some ideas to re-rolling the original though since he's now locked off an a canceled acount.Actually, /FA with the lvl 30 costume electric body aura would be more fitting. The activations of /FA makes it the win for this. Also, making a 2nd costume like the first one but with the electric aura and gold hair would make for great power up effects. This same idea has crossed my mind many times. It took everything in my being not to make my BS/regen a Trunks rip off. Minus the power up aura.

You know...speaking of it. Why does it seem to be a trend in the last ten years to buy out big companies just to add it to your portfolio?

Then...something like Exhibit C.) General Electric. So much under their list that the only thing I can do is say: Glance at it No wonder they're rated the top company of 2009. From Dishwashers to Movies.
What's next? Disney buys out Whirlpool?
I totally don't mean to tangent that insanity, but it's crazy. It's like the line of out Iron Man when Tony Stark(RDJ) and Pots are talking about a painting (artist escapes me). He questions its value and representation, they go back and forth a bit and he says "I need it. Buy it, store it." Doesn't even care /what it actually looks like/ he just wants to stick it in a warehouse so it's "His".
Okay, I'm done. I had to share that with someone since it's been bugging me to say it. I don't honestly care about the whole Disney>Marvel thing (kind of funny in a sense...the whole thing was so Disney could sell Wolverine and Spider-Man to little Timmy because they didn't have a Monopoly on Boys like they do with Princess-Themes for Girls. Seriously, that's why they did it o_O;; Marvel agreed simply because they couldn't afford to ship their films out of state and Disney is a powerhouse for that stuff. I think Marvel played Disney...but, whatever)

Notice: I've just discovered that my junkbox has been consuming some e-mails of inquiry that I wasn't aware. I generally check it every couple of days incase something does dump there incorrectly. So, if anyone has attempted to send me anything that I did not respond to, I apologize, this was not on purpose and I may have missed your e-mail. If this is the case, please re-send, and if possible note me on DA or PM me here. I was able to catch at least one today unexpectedly as I went to clear the junk folder so I figured I'd give a heads up if I missed one accidentally.

Quote:SSSH!<---- Also loves the background for that piece... speculates it's one of the images sent back from the Hubble telescope?
I also love what you did with Anatolia... is this sale still going on???
And, yes and no on the sale. Currently on hold while I clear out the queue (further update on that below)
Quote:Byakko is the Japanese name for The White Tiger, the celestial guardian of The West in Chinese astronomy, so there is relevance there
Quote:Meant to comment a lot earlier but been tied up this entire week.
First commission I ever received so I'm actually speechless. Thanks alot
As for...everything else still pending. Had a very interruptive event happen at 8:02 p.m. 8/25/09 that came kicking and screaming into the world. So currently I'm bursting with pride and joy and a pencil just can't seem to find its way into my hand the last couple of days as my newest offspring has been occupying that place. Hopefully you'll all understand the delay

Update #8: Classic Lady Judgement
-
Updates #6 & 7: Surprise Gift - Gray Huntress and Surprise Gift - Vexxxa
You should both see this in your inbox thanks to stealthy e-mail collection.
Edit: Forgot to mention there would have been three other updates tonight but my daughter's been sick all day and pried me away from doing everything I needed to. Fret not, things are prepped I just didn't have enough time to finalize everything and ship them out before I had to head out for work tonight. So expect more tomorrow!
