War is often the best option? How about war may be unavoidable, such as when invaded. Or war is the option of last resort after diplomacy and all negotiations have failed?

The sense in which there are no "winners" in war is well summarized by English poet John Donne: http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/no-man-is-an-island/

Nice seeing you on these forums again, Voodoo Girl! I've been pretty happy with the quality of the forums over at Titan Network and increasingly disappointed in the quality of forums here; sad too, since they started so great. See ya over at Titan.

Oh well, that's wonderful info!! Thank you!!! (and yes, none of my characters that I reviewed for Incarnate stats was in Dark Astoria or on an Incarnate trial.)

My issue with Fansy is simply the whole "talk like a crazy person" when it has been shown that instead of being Golden Girl on lyrical crack...Fansy can actually hold a real conversation in English. I am not into the coy hints of some people or the purposeful crazy rambling innuendos of other fancy birds. If you have something to say just say it.
Thanks for the history on this, Burnt the Toast. If you or others have more on that history and Fansy "being an imposter", that might help us evaluate Fansy's recent statements. The past 24-48 hours is the extent of my reading anything posted by Fansy. If Fansy is a former NCSoft employee that would support his/her claim to having a confidential source inside

Since I don't know the EQ character Fansy, I'm presuming the person posting as Fansy is emulating that NPC's style of talking. Some of what Fansy has said the past day or two to my mind is quite vague and purposefully so; other statements have been very direct with little doubt to my mind about how said statements are intended to be understood.

If Fansy is a pulling a prank or hoax, I'll be annoyed; and unless the others in the Community Consumer Action(s)/Save CoH player response think as I do that Fansy is legit, then it would be wise to proceed taking Fansy with a grain (or pound) of salt, depending on one's skepticism. False hope at this point truly would be cruel; however, Fansy's main points (imo) are 1. NCSoft is listening to us, whether they want to or not; 2. the Save CoH movement is working and should continue, albeit imo judiciously and intelligently; 3. CoH expiring on 11/30 terminates various contracts that will permit NCSoft to negotiate in a way we player-fans/customers are more likely to prefer.

Whether this is a hoax, sad joke, delusion, ego trip, corporate ruse, or a completely legitimate informed person with insider information who needs to maintain the cover of a facade, there's no way for me to know for certain barring some Reveal. As the Oracle told Neo in Matrix II "It is a pickle, no doubt about it. You'll just have to make up your own damn mind." That said, I've decided to put my trust and faith in Fansy and Fansy's purported source(s). (I've done all the research I personally can easily do.) If I'm deceived, I'm deceived. I won't like it, but it won't hurt nearly as much as Labor Day weekend (8/31 - 9/2) when 90-100% of us felt stunned and hurt first by the sudden Sunset Announcment and immediate layoff of all/most Paragon Studios personnel (most 'cause I don't know that is was all initially), and later as it sunk home even more deeply that our friends could no longer log in to game with us due to the emotional pain they're feeling and the active SGs and then servers started emptying out.

For me, this is about Saving CoH. It's also about treatment of customers by a major MMO publisher. For my part, I find it entirely credible that a former employee would have one or more contacts among his/her former colleagues willing to give some info on the QT (second definition: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=qt)

Quite apart from our (reasonable) speculations: a steady customer base, an estimated $10 million annual revenue, the relative profit/value of selling rather than taking a depreciation write off on the IP, the potential cost of negative publicity, etc, I think it's entirely possible that there are some, perhaps many, within NCSoft who take the company's Vision and Mission Statements to heart: to promote human happiness worldwide, to do the Right/Correct thing, etc. Whether any of these are ranking executives in NCSoft would be speculative and perhaps doubtful. Whether they play MMORPGs or not, these employees may rightly understand that we are a community and might also share the feelings many of us do or at least empathize that City of Heroes is more than a game, it's also an art form. On bad health days, I used to joke that CoH was my favorite coloring book! I could design costumes, bases, and after power customization even specialize many of my character's abilities including activation emotes and colorization.

Maybe there are Costume Competitions in other MMORPGs, but in MMOs where one selects from 8 or a dozen faces, a few hair styles, and costuming choices are selected by equipment worn, I tend to doubt it. I only once encountered a character who looked much like one of mine in CoH and even then there were significant differences. In the few MMO's I've tried outside CoH, one routinely encounters characters that are near doppelgangers of one's toon in how they look.
  7. Hi Chad! Here's what I have on Victory. Incarnate Gravity/Radiation Emission Controller with Tier 4 Core Nerve (alpha), T4 core Rebirth (destiny), T4 core Reactive (interface), T4 core Polar Lights (lore), and Tier 4 radial Ion (judgement) with zero progress towards unlocking Hybrid presently.

Incarnate Energy/Mental Manip Blaster with tier 4 core Musculature (alpha), T4 core Barrier (destiny), T4 core Diamagnetic (interface), Tier 3 Radial Cimerorans (lore), and Tier 3 Radial Ion (judgement.) Has some progress towards unlocking Hybrid but it would be moot for tonight's Magi iTrial for the Triple Threat badge.

When I look, I see a level shift of 1 on these and ALL my incarnate characters. (Sorry, I don't know what it takes to get a +3 level shift but apparently I don't have it.) That includes the blaster not on Victory who's Tier 4 from Alpha to Hybrid.

If I can help you earn the Triple Threat badge, great! Hoping you have enough skilled players interested and able to play at the time you propose for this.

If forming, please send me a Tell: @Kristoff von Gelmini (sorry it's a long funky name. If I'd known MMO gaming better when I picked it, I'd likely have chosen differently, but hey, it's distinctive and I've not met any other Von Gelminis in CoH who weren't either friends or alts of my first 50 who lives on Infinity.)

I'll need 23 people other people with +3 characters and a good balance of buffs, debuffs and damage to pull this off. This is and has been the main item on my CoH bucket list since the cancellation was announced.

For those of you who do not know about Triple Threat, it is earned in the Magisterium Incarnate Trial by defeating Chimera, Nega-Pendragon and Shadow Hunter within a five second window. It's tough, but obviously doable with three strong teams who are paying attention to one another. In my previous attempts, the difficulty has always been negating Pendragon's fae shield, but I'm confident that we can handle it as long as everyone follows directions.

So, again, I ask for your help. Bring whomever you feel strongest about playing and has a +3 Incarnate shift, but remember that we need to balance strong buffs, debuffs and damage. Plan on three runs: a practice run to get everyone warmed up, then two REAL attempts. (Feel free to grab Ultimates, team inspirations, or any thing else that you think will help out. I hate to say it, but there's not a lot of reason to keep stockpiling resources at this point.)

And remember that the badge doesn't award until the trial is completed, so please don't leave us hanging after the first wave of Praetorian AVs!

I have two 50s on Victory, a Gravity/RE controller with Tier 4 everything except for Hybrid which is still locked (IIRC). I'd really have to double check as well as play the character a bit since it's been a couple of weeks and i want my play refreshed if I'm on this toon for this purpose. I also have a blaster, has all incarnate powers but for Hybrid, however, I'm fairly sure some of his incarnate powers are Tiers 2 and 3. I'll check on level shifts and the thiings my memory is vague about before posting here again, but barring unforeseen events, I'm up for this!

I call b.s. I would also like to remind everyone once again of all the other b.s. formerly spewed on these forums. Remember all the false rumors that have had to be debunked publicly by not only our own overworked mods but whole other development houses as well, who shouldn't have to interrupt their own business to do that. And it's all because some weirdos are so desperate for attention that they have to sink to this nonsense.

Honestly, the absurdity gets more extreme with every week that goes by. NC already said "fahgetaboutit, period, end of story." If they weren't going to hand the reins over to a then-still-together Paragon Studios at the peak of the SaveCoH campaign when they were taking the most damage, they're not going to get involved in any half-baked scheme with unknown underlings later.

Fansy should be banned, to be honest, as should the other false-rumor mongers. Take your entertainment from such a dufus if you will, but don't anybody believe a word of it.
Hmmm. Even more amusing or ironic. No, I am no Fansy, not even remotely, though I did get a reply from my private message thanking Fansy for what she or he posted here and on the Titan Network forums. In my private reply, Fansy said someone was claiming I'm Fansy. I'm not. If I need to prove it, I'm not sure how to go about it other than saying I've had only ONE account with NCSoft ever (this one). When the servers go dark I'll have NO NCSoft account nor need of one since the publisher is discontinuing "my cup of tea." Apologies if you found my attempts to mimic the style of Fansy confusing. It must be because I'm a ROLE-PLAY GAMER, and if someone is going to be whimsical and humorous while sharing potentially good news and encouragement to NOT RELENT, to instead continue our Save CoH efforts, and further claims to be a Bard, I'm role-play gamer enough to attempt to reply in kind. (The few hours I played EQ one afternoon in the late 90s didn't introduce me to the EQ character of Fansy. For me THE Bard is sweet William, otherwise known as Shakespeare, though for others that title would go to Taliesin, or if German Goethe or perhaps Schiller.)

On to the meat of your post. You call B.S. That's fair and your call. I also would take umbrage at anyone offering false hope or (worse) perpetrating a hoax. I can't prove Fansy's not doing that, but I can attest that it's my opinion the person writing as Fansy isn't. It's my sense after reviewing every Fansy post I could find on this and on Titan Network's forums that Fansy is legit and has a confidential source who perhaps risked their job so Fansy could "leak" to us that our Save CoH efforts have NOT been in vain and further to continue them. Yeah, I'd like more constructive advice from Fansy or anyone as to how to direct our community consumer activities even more effectively, and am hoping Fansy can perhaps divulge privately to TonyV, Victoria Victrix or whomever info to help hone our response and efforts in a way NCSoft will hear and respond to favorably, by which I mean either continuing to publish CoH and rehire the Dev team (ok unlikely) or to SELL the IP etc. so CoH continues and any devs looking for work might get jobs with the new publisher.

My goal as a customer is for NCSoft to treat me like I'm a valued customer. Apparently, I'm not. Valued customers have replies to their letters. Additionally, I do NOT mean rank and file NCSoft employees--I've had nothing but positive experiences with both game staff and tech support--I mean the executives who sold me and all of you various products from the Paragon Market as add-ons for a product that will soon cease to exist, marketing new items no less than 10 days prior to the Sunset Notice. That and few other things such as the treatment of the development team formerly known as Paragon Studios is why I am angry at NCSoft. I would feel mere disappointment if City of Heroes closed because almost no one ever played it and the meager revenues generated failed to offset production costs, that I could understand and would find infinitely more palatable.

Well, I'm sure I've rambled on quite long enough. Have a good day, Happy Gaming and STAY SUPER!!

P.S. Thanks to everyone posting who's managed to stay positive and seriously constructive. I don't think I've managed to be either of these as well as I would have liked.

  14. This isnt' exactly a new "game" per se but since 8/31/12 efforts to Save CoH have been ongoing, particularly on Titan Network forums. I don't know that taking part in customer action(s) will replace the feeling you have playing CoH. I don't think any MMO presently on the market will replicate sufficiently the experience I have playing City of Heroes. But we could use the help.

Until then, we all have until midnight 11/30 or 12/1 3 pm EST to play City of Heroes. Yes, it's not the same without the formerly active supergroups, servers and our friends, but the content and game is still here a while longer.

    Best wishes,

Thank you again, Fansy. As you suggested, I did take time to Google and found numerous links to your famous name. Pardon my ignorance in not knowing Who Thou Art. http://www.notacult.com/fansythefamous.htm looks the most likely but then I find a link to a Fansy Goodsinger in WoW: http://www.wowwiki.com/Fansy_Goodbringer and even this Urban Dictionary entry: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fansy

While whimiscal in your posts, O Bard of Bards!, I do not believe you'd intentionally perpetrate a hoax for your own amusement at the expense of Heroes and other fans languishing at the imminent demise of the City and Isles we love best.

Rather, sing longer, louder and more clearly to those who hear your barding and infer correctly while having patience with those who cannot.

While I am sorely tempted to guess WHO THOU MIGHT BE, I shall refrain, for by your words you kindle hope and yea verily e'en shed some light on paths to be taken for the Quest to Save CoH to meet with happy conclusion. Therefore, good Bard, play on! I'd not unmask thee e'en were I able, though should the Quest meet with Fortune's blessing and success, perhaps then thy mask may be put aside amid cheering of this Final Reveal!! (Unless 'twere wisdom ne'er to do so.)

In the most obvious example, nobody can make a low-pop MMO now even though what is now a low-pop MMO was top dog 10 years ago and highly profitable. This is bad, bad, BAD, for anyone but who always becomes the target demographic: the gullible young crowd. Why should everyone else have to be told, "you get nothing but what is crap to you because all we care about is the demographic that is easiest to string along"? This is how smart sci-fi has almost become extinct and now can usually just be described as soap operas in the future/space. Entertainment is telling you, "You're not in the largest demographic, so you don't like poop? Too bad. You either eat the poop, or starve, because the only people who matter to us are the poop eaters."
Hmmm. Interesting post, Tim. 1. how did the Boston Legal episode turn out? I assume the elderly couple lost/had no case. (Sounds like a frivilous lawsuit to my layman's ears.) and 2. I had a funny image of the Entertainment Industry dressed as Marie Antionette saying "Let them eat poop!" Not exactly enticing, and no doubt the reason why I find comparatively little on television worth watching or even in the movie house.

It doesn't work as an analogy for the reasons you cite. My point in posting this is that sometimes customers can get discontinued products restored. Perhaps the small number of City of Heroes fans makes the analogy to Surge more apt, since Surge is a soda pop I've never heard of nor tried.

Ah, but we know better now, don't we? That there were indeed and still are Rangle Plots(tm).

    Favorites

I'd like a few more years to consider my answers to the questions posed.

    1. My first 50 (under issue 15) was a defender. My second was a controller. But my fave AT was the blaster. It took me a while to learn how to play a blaster without getting sent to the hospital all the time but doing high damage at range was highly satisfying.

    2. My fave character was an energy blaster with mental manip and elec mastery, enough so that I made a second one on another server and also got that character to 50 and Incarnate powers (though only the first one got Tier 4 Alpha, Judgement, Interface, Lore, Destiny and Hybrid.) Mostly I've been playing my Water blaster (has only Alpha, Judgement and Interface atm) but Water blast/Ice Manip might supplant my current fave as a better blaster.

    3. Lots of ATs that others loved I never got into. If CoH were to continue, part of my future plans included learning those archetypes: stalkers, tankers, masterminds. Yeah, I had a few lowbies of most ATs, tho never rerolled the deleted Stalker.

And do remember that on top of the usual buisness communication traffic, the other games, the people over on COtitan intentionally tryign to flood the communication lines, it may not be that they intentionally ignored you. They may not have the time or more important things to do. Not saying what you said isnt important but it may have just lost in the shuffle or maybe they decided to ignore anything that looked like those flame "communication" thing from COHTitan people and yours just got lumped into there.

It dont seem that anything they can say right now can "soothe" the situation and if they continued to release statements that continue to anger the customers, then instead of them complaining about the lack of talk from NCSOft they would flip it to say that it seems that NCSoft is now taunting them. I think so many people are so angry that right now, there is no way to appease them either way. So what is an entity to do? Try to appease those that cannot be appease or focus on te changes and goals of the company? I would focus on the goal of the company. And ona person level, most people wouldnt bother trying to appease to people angry. All a person have to to do is look at past post between an angry person (non-NCSoft angry post) and most people give up in one or two posts to make it better and write it off fairly quickly as "oh they dotn want to listen anyways so I'm not going to waste my time", if responding at all.

If they was to reply right now to answer the questions would you really be ready to listen? Or only ready to listen to get even more angry if they dont say what you want to hear? They already released two statements I think, and look how that turned out.
Yes, I believe I am 100% ready to hear NCSoft's explanation right now. Yes, their two Public Relations statements qualify imo as examples of "EPIC FAIL". No, I don't think NCSoft or any company should single out my communication as the one to reply to. Rather, I think any reasonable customer letter, one that omits bombastic language, ought to be responded to, and many companies have a department dedicated to customer relations. Perhaps my communication was "lost in the shuffle" as you suggested or "not important enough" or otherwise slipped thru the cracks. Be that as it may, NCSoft dropping the ball on this reflects on them, and signals clearly how important my business as a customer is to them or isn't! Unless you're suggesting that NCSoft cannot distinguish between one customer's letter and another's? I'm not certain about "entities" but I expect businesses to act business-like, which means reading one's mail, sorting and filtering it, perhaps discarding/ignoring bombastic rants, but otherwise responding business-like to customer letters. (Presumably NCSoft still wants customers.)

Re: appeasing the angry crowd aka all of us, did you read the link I posted on "New Coke"? I actually like the Coca-Cola company version better than the Wikipedia synopsis. The reason I posted that is that Coca-Cola angered and upset MANY of its customers. Coke chose NOT to ignore it's customers. Coke wanted to win/survive the "cola wars" -- hence the "bold" step of New Coke/Coke II -- and Coke had the wisdom to see it had made a bad decision in doing away with its "failing" product and brought it back. "Classic" coca-cola came back ONLY because of customer action and letters.

CoH wouldn't be able to survive a relaunch under NCSoft ownership and would once again be shut down.

The only way CoH could continue is under completely new management that has no connection to NCSoft.
What you suggest might be the case but we won't know unless NCSoft decides to continue CoH. I know many players who stopped playing CoH shortly after the Sunset Notice of 8/31 who would return, but concede some wouldn't. Some of the dev team have new jobs, others don't. I personally have no problem with CoH continuing with an entirely different publisher than NCSoft. NCSoft which I regarded favorably until 8/31 has managed thus far only to alienate me further by their public relations statements and lack of courtesy of a reply to my customer letter.
  24. I can see quite a lot has been posted to this thread since last I read it.

Marketing new items including a new powerset less than 10 days before the Sunset Notice of 8/31 stinks, imo.

Paragon Studios ought to have been in the information loop months in advance that headquarters was considering closing NCSoft, not as a sudden surprise late Friday afternoon 8/31 that you're all laid off and we're closing CoH.

Nearly everyone commenting on the public financial reports (since none of us have access to NCSoft internal accounting) suggest that CoH was still profitable (earned more than its expenses) and had a loyal stable customer base. Why it made sense to NCSoft to close CoH under these circumstances is unknown and is the cause for near endless speculation other than their nebulous "refocusing" comment.

Some of their PR statements if intended to be soothing were instead inflamatory, e.g. CoH is special to NCSoft like a family member - man, I sure want no part of a family that "sunsets" even revenue-producing members of the family, with no warning and no options for reprieve.

Yeah the 90 days of play during "Sunset" is better than nothing. Barely. NCSoft refunded the unused/unusable portion on my annual subscription to the product they're discontinuing. Huzzah! (Too bad for me I bought my last batch of Paragon Market points prior to the timeframe they're refunding.)

NCSoft hasn't told us WHY sunsetting CoH is good business; e.g. if it cost more to produce than the revenues generated. Do they have to? No, but if you want to keep your customers, you talk to them nicely, with rational understandable explanations, not with what comes across (imo) as doublespeak (as in CoH is so special to us we have to, um, KILL it.)

As a player I want to see CoH continue. I loved the content and the game. I also loved the community and active supergroups. Additionally, I came to appreciate that CoH is an art form: all the conversations and forums devoted to builds, all the costume contests, reminded me of model railroad enthusiasts, who'd lovingly detail this or that. NCSoft's decision to stop publishing CoH affects me. NCSoft's decision NOT to sell the IP likewise affects me. The time and creativity I put into developing characters, bases, and teams/groups vaporizes into limbo. I could talk some about what made CoH special and so could you.

MMORPGs may be a highly competitive market. So is the soda pop industry. In 1985 Coca-Cola decided to stop making Coke and changed the formula. Here's what happened: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Coke or if you prefer here's what Coke says about it: http://www.thecoca-colacompany.com/h...e_newcoke.html

We CoH players may be too few (or we may not be!) but with Coke, the consumers, the customers WERE able to bring back their desired product. Likewise customers of other discontinued products were able to get the manufacturers to re-introduce "sunsetted" products.

I applaud those working to make a positive difference and hope in time we get City of Heroes back, optimally with most/all of the development team, since imo CoH without them sure wouldn't be the same. I want Issue 24, and Issue 25 with Kallisti's Wharf (see the youtube video) and all the other neat things the devs had planned. Will I get what I want? Maybe not, but I can work for it. I've written a non-responsive NCSoft--very bad form, imo, to ignore customer communication. As a customer and fan of CoH I have every reason to be unhappy and even angered over what NCSoft has done and how. That others feel differently is their perogative.
