  1. I decided to go the frankenslot route on Dark Regen. Got 84.67% on acc and end redux, 47.7% heal, and 96.1% recharge. Still managed to keep 3 of the Touch of Nictus to get the HP and Acc bonuses. Decided against the Theft of Essence: Chance for +END to get as much as I could out of it every time I use it.

I can just switch things around later if I don't like it. Thanks for the suggestions guys.
  2. I would take the Leadership pool much more and would take some of those situational powers that I currently skip to make room for Stamina. Some I might only use once a week, but how cool to have it when you need it?

Why chase a couple set bonuses when you can carry some inspirations?
    This.

Since +def is one of the few things worth pursuing, it's hardly surprising that's the one being pursued. Set out a bowl full of apples and bird droppings...don't be shocked when everyone takes the apples. I would love having other bonuses that are worthwhile. The soft-capped numbers would necessarily go down as people migrated to other bonuses they personally wanted more. Give us some oranges and less apples will be eaten.

There are quite a few folks spending a lot of influence, time, and making build sacrifices to get this defense. What happened to the idea that you should be rewarded for effort?

On characters that have no native defense and no defense debuff resistance, I prefer to build for no or moderate amounts (20% - 32.5%) of defense while focusing on other build goals that benefit the character more.

Since I actually fight enemies other than CoT Behemoths, I know all too well that softcapped defense is a lot less invulnerable than it looks on paper. There is a reason that defense is the only mitigation you can stack such huge amounts of, not just as far as IOs are concerned, but also in the realm of pool powers/ally/team buffs: it is bypassed more easily than any other mitigation out there.
Same here. Iirc I have exactly two toons which are soft-capped...a SR Scrapper and a Inv Tanker. I'm not really willing to give up what some people give up to get the 45%.

I have an Ice blaster that achieves 100% damage mitigation very often. Slows (underrated!) and holds galore. Out of whack? I also have a AR/Devs Blaster that is very safe most of the time (especially with his EPP bubble of safety available when things go south).

My Fire/Fire Blaster is much more dangerous to play. I haven't done anything special with either of them bonus-wise...that's just the way they are designed. Balanced...no...but I don't want all my characters to be exactly alike.

Edit: it also speaks to the nature and prevalence of defense bonuses when the best way to shore up a resistance-based character (like Fire Armour) is to get defense.

Now, I realise if resistance bonuses were about equal in power/prevalence as defense ones it would be laughably easy to make stupidly overpowered characters...but a semblance of balance would be nice.
Got a point there. Resistance based characters are more challenging. But again...maybe it's ok that every character isn't equally hard to play? I sign on and have a WIDE variety of choices available on my character screen. There are times when I want that "super" feeling with the SR Scrapper. I don't feel anything is broken. I realize when I sign on with a Blaster my risk vs reward is less in my favor than a Tanker or Scrapper...or Controller or Defender....but why not admit that is ok? Am I the only one that isn't in the same exact mood every day?

I play soft-capped Blasters all the time. How everyone doesn't know when to pop 4 purple inspirs when needed, I dunno. The option to combine inspirs meant my Blasters stopped dying as much. It's easy to do.

I would like the option to remain open if I ever do decide to go through the PITA to make a Blaster capped. (Unlikely...but maybe I'll be in that mood one of these days)
  4. Thanks guys, I will look that stuff when I get home. Dark Regen even sticks out to me as needing another look....so it MUST be bad.

Dark Regen may actually use LESS end with this build because I may use it less often. No defense in the old build (which sometimes meant I was back in trouble by the time the insanely long animation finished ).
  5. I'll take this silence to mean I have the perfect build.

It doesn't seem too pricey, so I'll give it a shot. I think I'm most worried about the low end redux in Dark Regeneration...that thing takes a bite! I'll probably look at options on that.
  6. Just pulled out my Spines/DA scrap which hasn't been played in a while. I had a little more trouble surviving than I cared for so I thought I would redo the build. Mostly I wanted to get hit less. Last night I was doing a lot of healing, green/purple eating, ducking behind cover to stay alive. (For some reason I was stealing aggro from TWO tankers.)

Not being the greatest build guru in the world I thought I would post it here to see if there were any obvious holes in what I'm doing. The main thing I did was drop cloak of fear and pick up tough and weave. (Had to give up Air Superiority :( ) I went back and forth over Cloak of Fear and Oppressive Gloom. I went with the latter for end benefits and the fact that it just seems to mitigate more in my experience. I would reconsider that if the to-hit debuff element is worth the end.

I could have gotten more defense if Obliteration had more end reduction...I had to pass on that several times. :(

Mostly this exercise renews my hope that those rumored "virtual slots" are able to be added to powers. This is a lvl 50 toon, so I just threw the slots in a weird order.

Game design - like all businesses - is a balance between serving "the customer" and doing what you want and hoping there *are* customers.

Perspective is interesting. Jack gets hammered for wanting to follow a game design vision, even though it might be sometimes contrary to the players. Michael Bay is often reviled for the opposite reason: he gives the viewing public what he thinks they want to see, and his ticket numbers suggest he's right much of the time. It is almost never about vision or catering: its about whether you agree with the final result that determines your judgment of the philosophy that got them there.

Both well said and pleasure to read.
  8. I run two accounts at once all the time (not dual-box...dual-windows on one PC).

I never team that way though. I've got so many characters that its fun to mix and match them and run through AE missions or something. I team a Fire/Kin and a Cold/Ice Defender a lot and it's awesome. The ice shields make the Fire/Kin unkillable and the Fulcrum Shift makes the AOE attacks on the Defender into awesome-sauce. Stuff dies quickly. When you are in the mood to be a god that is one way to do it.

Also I've been running a Fire Tanker with a Fire Blaster....nice to have no aggro on a Fire Blaster. You just kill everything in comfort.

I suppose a bubbler on follow would work on teams. Just bubble everyone every few minutes. I doubt I'll ever do it.
  9. Appears to be the PSU. Posting now after 45 minutes with no problems after replacing it. (bumped up to 600w)

    So as of now...thanks guys.

I, too, was unsure if it was a PSU issue. I first suspected heat, so I blew out all my fans and grilles and vents and such, to no avail. I was able to confirm with reasonable certainty that it was a PSU problem when my PSU made a sizzling noise, began belching large clouds of acrid white smoke, then made a loud pop before I yanked the power cord out. Yeah, I was bummed. I was also surprised since it was one the higher-end brands, a PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750. I've never heard of one of their units nuking itself. Oh well.

I RMA'd it since it was still under warranty and wanted to be sure that nothing else was damaged in the meltdown. FWIW, the builder I purchased it from, Digital Storm, has been fantastic with regards to handling this issue. Very communicative and good about keeping me up-to-date on things. They actually called me - on an actual telephone! - to let me know that they had fixed everything (in five days) and to inquire about which method they should use to ship it back. Not an email, a phone call from an actual live person. I give Digital Storm my wholehearted endorsement. Having to pay for shipping was a bummer, though.

I hope your situation goes less dramatically than mine.
Yes...so far no nukes. Must mean my PSU isn't a blaster.

Crossing fingers against that. I'm about to go into penny-pinching mode due to my job ending....definitely a bad time for the PC to explode on me.

I would have done that...but the PC won't actually start and/or run long enough to do that.

    A heat problem, eh?
  12. A couple of weeks ago, I hit the start button on my PC and walked away to get a drink. When I came back, the PC was off. I was puzzled but just restarted it again with no problem.

Yesterday I booted up and spent about 5 minutes doing stuff when the PC just stopped. No warning at all, it just shut completely off. I tried to start it again but only got the start button to light up for about a second and it got no further. I went away for about an hour and tried again. It booted up fine for about 2 minutes and then shut off again. Again an attempted start only lasted for about a second.

Power supply? I have a 500 watt PSU in it. I did upgrade my video card about 2 or 3 months ago. The one I put in had to have the extra power cord to run. (I can never remember what I have in it when I am away from the PC...like now)

Tell me I am going to get off cheap here.
  13. Seems like I do something different every day.

While shopping yesterday I got 3 tells to join teams. I finally took one and took down a few AVs for that character.

Someone is starting a TF every few minutes it seems like. And as a testament to how active the server is, you usually need to respond quickly or the team will be full.

More often (and note that this is virtually 100% of the time), I'm sitting at the consignment house, the tailor, the store or at the trainer, and I get a buff that expires before I can even think about getting out to a fight. Far as I'm concerned, this an irritation. I'm not going to blow a fuse and scream at the buffer, or even do anything more than maybe make a snide comment in Teamspeak or roll my eyes, but there's no point other than to show "o hai! I has buffs!" In the consignment house in particular, this can add extra load on people with older systems (thankfully not me) where it's already slow.

Rule of thumb for me: If the buff is being handed out intelligently and with a reason, then there's no problem. If it's just a matter of having an itchy buffing finger and a captive audience, then it's stupid. For my part, on the few buffers I do have, I generally don't drive by buff anyone. I might pass out a rez where necessary but if I'm looking to test out my buffs, I'll find one of the buffable friendly NPCs, like the PPD walking around Kings Row.
Yeah, a WW buff doesn't make any sense. I can see how that would cause eyes to roll.
  15. Aww man...

See...this is why it is soo hard to be a human being. No matter what you do, someone will not like it. Even if you are going out of your way to be nice, someone will take offense to it.

This probably means we'll never stop having wars. What a species we are.

I will say I had no idea about SB causing some to DC. That's an understandable complaint.
  16. Welcome.

I have to ask, is it necessary to download the game again? I would think you could get around that one somehow.
  17. I would love to get in on it with a Fire/Kin Controller if spots open up.

I've been on many all controller teams so I know what you mean.

I think the crystals got a couple of us in the 2nd mish. (No gloating!)
  19. 1:05:43 for defender team 34:57 for Controller team.

We somehow ended up with 4 kins/....which don't stack very well. Would have loved to have more Rad/...but it is what it is. Another excuse (reaching) was I wasn't 100% sure whether we were supposed to "speed" it or not. (So busy recruiting we didn't have time to talk about it)

Trollers win! Wish it was closer than that!

Just to show I'm completely out of touch...

The population of Freedom went down? I know the AE farms died (now starting to come back...uh oh...) but I must not have been paying attention to the population in general.

If it takes me more years to get them all maxed out and the process is just as fun and rewarding as it was getting to 50, then that's a great "problem" to be burdened with!
    That sounds like my attitude.

I mostly play 50s now (at lvl 50 you can play every single part of the game), so giving me even more reason to play them is win. Since I'm still here, I'm obviously not bored. I think I have a better idea than the OP which 50's to start with first...so that's not a worry.

I'm really interested in the idea of adding more slots if that's what this implies. Most of my lvl 50s could really use a couple more at least. I do have a couple that seem to have more than enough, but they are the minority.

Having played Controllers so much (including that awesome combo) I really wonder how a Defender team can keep up. I can't wait to find out.

I'll probably start forming up in Cim about 15 minutes before 1:00pm EST. I'll start hitting up the global chat channels at 1:00 if the teams aren't full. Hopefully it won't take too long to get started.

More than likely we'll be an all defender team, probably doing the ITF.

I can still run with either of the set Def / Con teams listed in this thread at the 1pm ET time.
Anything is fine with me. I'm in wing-it mode.
  24. Ok...how about 1:00pm EST on Sunday the 24th? I'll say start with the ITF and move on to the LGTF pending better ideas on the spot. I guess the advantage of those two is most know them. We should either do something that everyone knows or that everyone doesn't know. Seems easier to find the latter.

    We've got:

    Defender team:

    1-JeetKuneDo
    2-Lieran
    3-tempty's friend
    4-OmegaElementress (either)
    5-Altoholic_Monkey (either)
    6-
    7-
    8-

    Controller team:

    1-tempty?
    2-Turgenev?
    3-Lucky666
    4-OmegaElementress (either)
    5-Altoholic_Monkey (either)
    6-
    7-
    8-

Player ratings are tied to your login from C:\...\City of Heroes\USERNAME\playernotes.txt. The format of the file structure is:

    Field 1: Global Name.
    Field 2: Star rating.
    Field 3: Alternate names seen.
    Field 4: Player commentary.

    For example:

"Turgenev" "5" "Dr. Turgenev, Supreme Soviet" "This guy likes to talk."

You can review this file at any time in Notepad or any other text editor.
Awesome. Sounds like a minor bit of work, but that will pretty much solve the problem.

Just to clarify, I would copy the entire file over as an additional file to the one that already exists in that username file? I was assuming I would just open it up and copy over information the other one doesn't have and vise-versa.
