My nomination for Best Character is Ms. Manners. She appears in 2220 Trademark Infringement and 259920 In Poor Taste as your contact and in the latter as an ally in mission three.

If that is your goal, that is an admirable one but, keep in mind that it is strictly YOUR goal. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I would wager that most people play this game for fun and, writing an MA arc that is trying to be the next great american novel is not going to fall into most people's definition of fun. Furthermore, if someone felt they had an idea that fell into this category they would be a fool to publish it here as opposed to spending the time to work it into something that they could attempt to make money from through a professional publisher. Looking for high end literary content in MA is like looking for a ticket to the clue bus at the train station, in my opinion.

Are there any plans to implement a search/sort feature for arcs based on number of plays? I would find this considerably more useful than some of the search and sorting tools currently available.
-
And this is where I get confused. All of these arcs where already chosen by devs to have been made nominees in the first place. So, why does there need to be a second round of vetting at all? The fact that they were nominees and selected by devs makes them DC by definition. Ultimately, I would hope that the original poster was right and that they are just trying to milk the process for all it's worth.

Quote:While you can make the distinction between movies and arcs, I think that most players voting will not. As long as the name Epic is attached to this category I would bet you any amount of money you care to lose that there is going to be confusion over exactly what this category title means with most players voting for the "save the world" arcs over others. Like I said in my previous post, if you want the category to be all about voting for that style of arc, then that is fine. However, I got the distinct impression that the category was purely a designator for arcs for level 41 to 50 characters based upon how the other categories (TO, DO, and SO) where named. If this is the case, then I would recommend purely naming the categories by level bands (i.e. Best 1 to 15 Level arc, etc.). Ultimately, it is Bubba's decision and, while I agree that the term Epic does sound cool, I strongly feel that it is a term that is going to create more problems than it is worth in the long run.Re: Is 'Epic' really epic?
As I said in the "behind the scenes" notes, I think an arc written for the biggest heroes needs to be appropriate for their status. That doesn't mean it has to 'save the world' every time. Even little things can require major heroes, such as mentoring a protege. So, no, epic arcs don't have to be grandiose at all. But they do have to be appropriate for that stage of a hero's career (this is true of every category -- AVs are usually a bad idea in TO arcs). I like the name 'epic'. It's for players with epic powers. It's not a movie, it's an arc. -
I have a question for other people who voted in all of the categories. What was your hit to miss ratio? In my case, it ended up that I had voted for seven of the winners as my first choice, with the other two being my second. I'm curious to see how others who voted in all the catories did just to get some sort of basis of comparison.

I would like to third this motion as Wrong Number came up with the same idea as I was getting ready to leave for work this morning.

Quote:I had expressed this concern privately to Bubba during the voting process.Re. The voting process: Unfortunately, public voting can devolve into a popularity contest, either deliberately or accidentally. If one creator is a member of a big SG, for instance, and word gets out about his/her entry, you can get a dozen votes for that creator's arc from people that only vote in that category.
Quote:Mandating voters to cast in at least two categories could be an option, but that has its problems, too. -
Quote:I have no problem with authors voting for themselves either but, as Dalghryn said this will lead to gaming the system. Ill note that Im pretty insensitive to this problem myself because, in my experience, no matter how well you build a system people will find a way to game it.Author voting: I allowed author voting, and it didn't cause any upsets, but it did have the possibility to.
Quote:The nomination process: I wanted to avoid allowing authors to nominate their own arcs which I thought would create a massive flood of arcs that I wasn't prepared to take on. But this nomination process created the problem that a few of the arcs were by authors who are no longer active, so it really didn't matter to them whether they won or not. Also, many of the authors didn't know they were nominated until towards the end of the process (my fault for not better notifying them as I should) One thought is to have authors post their arcs for qualification in one thread, and have players choose nominations from the qualification thread in a second thread. That might be a little convoluted though.
Quote:The categories themselves: There was a bit of conflict over the level range categories. One of the TO arcs, which ended up winning, contained an AV in it, which many thought were too tough for a TO range arc, but many others thought differently. Also, in the so-called "Epic" category, some felt that Blap Blap Blappy Day had a disadvantage because it was not "epic" in feel, even though it covered the level range.
Quote:The number of arcs for voters: There was a large amount of arcs for possible voters to play through in a limited amount of time. It's hard to pin down a correct amount of time for something like this, but I ended up with a lot of votes in all the categories, many people who voted in all the categories, and many who voted in most. -
Congratulations to all of the winners! Congratulations to Bubba for running the whole show and, congratulations to everyone who voted. I'm already looking forward to next year.

I just wanted to say I agree with you on this and, really don't see where the issue is here. My toon was partially TOed at best and the EB was really no problem at all, especially compared to other nominated arcs which have racked up some pretty impressive kill ratios on the same toon.

My vote for best Multi-Part Arc:
1) The Consequences of War Part 1 #227331 and Part 2 #241496 @Dalghryn
2) The Audition Part 1 #221240 and Part 2 #221241 @MRCaptainMan
I also wanted to correct a mistake I made in my previous voting. Back when I cast my "no award" vote for best short arc, Wrong Number correctly questioned my judgement on this. To give a little background on myself, I have been a board game enthusiaist for 32 years now. I used to write reviews and did a good deal of playtesting, a little of which I still do today. Because of my background, I had been invited a few times to participate in review panels similar to what Bubba is doing with his players choice awards. In each of these, the "no award" vote was part of the process (the Hugos use this too, if I remember correctly). As a result of this, I fell back on this programming and lost sight of my principle rule with respect to this game which is that CoH is about fun before anything else. So, I wanted to take this opportunity to apologize to everyone involved in the MA players choice awards for my apples to oranges mistake.
My corrected vote for Best Short Arc:
1) Celebrity Kidnapping #1388 @PW
2) Of Sound Body and Mind #13107 @Mr. Mud -
The funniest thing about this comment to me is I genuinely wonder whether Venture realizes he has insulted the intelligence of pretty much everyone involved in these awards. This is, yet again, another demonstration of why I don't take his reviews seriously and wonder why anyone would trust his judgment as a reviewer on any level. The wisdom of Solomon, indeed!

My vote for Best Use of Mechanics:
1) Speeding Through Time # 51728 @Geek_Boy
2) The Next War on Drugs #245042 @arachnodragon
Well, I would bet that of all the posters here I have the absolute least time to play CoH (due to a ton of RL responsibilities) and, I'm going to be able to get votes in on the two parters. So, I think your one extra weekend was plenty of time. Ultimately, it is your decision. However, I just don't want this to end up like a bunch of the five part arcs I have played that easily could have been four but, where padded to five because of the dogma that a serious arc must have five parts. -
My votes for Best Serius Arc:
1) Blight #140423 @Witch Engine
2) Tales of Croatoa: A Rose By Any Other Name #178774 @Silvers1
This was an interesting category for me because I have always said that dev's choice should never be viewed as any sort comment on arc's overall quality. With the recent addition of the winners of the Architect Awards, the quality of the dev's choice selection of arcs has improved a bit (Sabrina's Tale was my third choice). However, you then have the unplayable Ghost in the Machine arc to counterbalance these (unless the arc was not built to spawn 2 EB masterminds out the gate). -
Quote:Absolutely, and you should be commended for achieving that.4) Remember, this is for fun. Yes, there's a prize involved, both in inf and bragging rights, but the most important part is to play some great arcs, which everyone is doing.
Quote:Thank you all for your support, and I also don't mind seeing discussion based on the rules. I'm not taking any of it personally. I've been getting too much positive feedback for all of this to do that. -
In my opinion they are. I'm a fan of shorter arcs and I can easily name a number of arcs more entertaining than any of the other four entries in this category. Given that yardstick, no award was the obvious choice.
-
Most but not all.
Quote:meaning that they're not exactly hurting for publicity.
Quote:Lastly, there's no consolation prize at awards ceremonies like the Oscars. -
My vote for Best Short Arc:
1) Celebrity Kidnapping #1388 @PW
2) No Award -
Quote:I agree with this final statement completely. As it stands now, the fact that an arc was a nominee is virtually meaningless. The arcs don't get moved closer to the top of the list and are effectively banished to obscurity as a result. At this point I would have prefered to see the winners not having received dev's choice because, given their very generous RL prizes, it seems that adding the dev's choice on top of those is the equivalent of kicking the nominated player's when they are down. This basically has the effect of, yet again, devaluing the whole dev's choice concept. Then they could have started giving arcs that almost made the cut Dev's Choices, thereby spreading the wealth a bit and adding incentive for future award submissions. It just seems like another lost opportunity to promote MA activity.
Fortunately, we do have something better in the MA player's choice awards. Since these are awards that were initiated by and are being selected by the players, they will have considerably greater value to me personally. In fact, the one thing that has been much better with these awards is the delay between the nomination and final selection process. This is obviously for the practical need of giving people time to play the arcs to be able to vote on them. This gives the nominees considerably more time in the limelight as well as getting more plays for them. Getting arcs more plays does not only drawing more attention, it draws exactly the sort of attention (getting the arcs played) that you want MA to be receiving. -
My votes for best epic level arc:
1) One Million Eyes #71933 @minimalist
2) Have a Blap, Blap, Blappy Day Kids! #2019 @Wrong Number
One Million Eyes is easily the best arc I have played out of all of the nominees so far. It really made me feel like a hero (which doesn't happen anywhere near as frequently as it should in this game). -
Congratulations to all the winners and nominees.
Quote:Why only some? Weren't all the nominees picked by the developers? It was a challenge to narrow down the nominees and winners because we received so many excellent submissions. In the end, we had to make some tough choices. However, don't be surprised if some of the nominees receive Developer's Choice designation in the City of Heroes mission lists! -
I just finished The Most Important Thing could you please review Old Dog, New Trick arc # 81318. Details of the arc where included in my feedback mail.
