Quote:Actually, they're weren't overly concerned. That's why they initially refused to train him. It wasn't until Maul had killed Qui'Gon that the Council started to take this whole "The Sith might not be gone after all" thing seriously, at which point the 'Chosen One' prophecy gets viewed in a new light. Lo and behold, suddenly Obi-Wan is given permission to take on a new padawan.Thinking about it, it makes NO SENSE that the Jedi would be all fired concerned over this prophecy.
If the Jedi see "balancing the Force" meaning "Jedi win", why would they be concerned? At the time they found the "chosen one", the Jedi already HAD WON, as far as they could tell. They hadn't seen any Sith or darkside activity for AGES. They were an important part of galactic society. They had a totally sweet temple on the capitol planet and everyone gave them VIP treatment.
It'd be like someone showing up today and saying, "You know, I totally have this perfect way to win World War 2."
Why weren't they all like, "Hey, dude, you're late to the game, the Force was totally balanced a few centuries ago. Go home."

I know I've taken the opposite viewpoint from you, Dark, but I can see where you're coming from.
Ultimately, you're right. It's a general difference in movie watching philosophy. I can indulge in and appreciate the 'what if' aspect of analyzing what led to or came after the events of the story, it's just not something that factors into my enjoyment of the story itself.
It's possible my opinion would change if I didn't consider the huge majority of the Star Wars EU to be garbage. -
Quote:Except this is specifically and explicitly how Star Wars canon is set up. It isn't a hypothetical "Maybe he could do this", it is a definite "He can do this, any time he likes."That might be a reasonable argument...had the Star Wars IP not been licensed out to all and sundry. Books, movies, games, comics, toys, etc. Expunge all that and your empire comes crashing down around your ears.
You kinda lose the right to say to people, "Oh that's not canon. Only what I write is canon." when all that merchandising is approved and released.
Certainly, practical and economic considerations would likely prevent him from wiping out anything not with his official hand on it, but they haven't ever stopped him from stepping in and doing what he wanted in spite of years of EU precedence.
Take the cortosis vibroblades in the KOTOR era, or even Mandalorian iron. Both creations of the EU, and both established in the EU as being at the very least lightsaber resistant. In a recent episode of The Clone Wars, the story called for Obi-Wan to duel a Mandalorian. The creative team intended to use a lightsaber resistant vibroblade for the Mandalorian's weapon. George specifically said "No. A lightsaber can cut through anything except another lightsaber," so they had to have the Mandalorian use a lightsaber.
A similar edict came down regarding Wookie Jedi. He was content to leave the handfull that had already been written, but was explicit that there would be no more.
Or perhaps you'd like the tragic tale of Anakin Solo. He's dead, gone, and unremarked because Lucas said he didn't want there to be two Anakins in Star Wars.
And that doesn't even touch on the ways the prequels stomped all over the EU.
Quote:If by "perfect sense" you mean, "the exact opposite of sense", then yes I agree with you. Because you quite literally can't have a happily ever after in such a universe. For a universe that took great pains to set up it's basis for existence, there has to be something more than just killing the Emperor and blowing up the Death Star.
If only to compensate the contractors' families.
Quote:Had Sleeping Beauty spun multiple movies along with referencing say, the Little Mermaid, then yes I would've wondered. However, SB is a relatively self-contained movie.
Quote:A story that spans multiple decades. It's not really a clear beginning, middle, and end. What happened to Leia, Luke, and Lando during the year from the end of Empire and the start of RotJ? What happened in between ANH and Empire? How did Luke go from the wounded bird at the end of Empire to the relative bad-*** in Jedi? The movies are brief snippets into the lives and adventures of the main characters.
In the end, you're obviously free to continue to overthink things as they relate to Star Wars. That's certainly your choice to make. But being unable enjoy it without overthinking is your problem, not a flaw with the ending of the story. -
Quote:From The Mythology of Star Wars with George Lucas and Bill Moyers, Lucas compared the difference between the light and dark sides as being like the difference between a symbiotic relationship and a cancer. A symbiotic relationship is one which benefits both parties and in which neither is harmed, whereas a cancer takes without giving back, eventually causing the death of both parties.Which doesn't even remotely answer my question. You claim that balance is restored to the force by the death of the Emperor and Vader, and the wiping out of the Sith. So, at the end of the movies, you are left with only one side's view/philosophy of the Force, the Jedi, in the form of Luke. So explain to me how having only one viewpoint, with no opposition or counterpoint on something creates balance. That would be like saying if you were the only one having this discussion there would be a balanced viewpoint on whether or not the EU was valid.
The Force (or Light Side, if you must) is naturally in balance. The presence of the Dark Side creates the imbalance, and so destroying it (by destroying the Sith), returns the natural order. So, by destroying the Emperor and being redeemed (and then dying), Anakin restores the natural balance of the Force, fulfilling the prophesy. -
Quote:Irrelevant. It's his universe. He created it and is whole and sole owner. His word is the Fundamental Truth, as far as the Star Wars IP is concerned.Except the one movie that was the top, namely Empire, didn't have Lucas' ham-handed attempts at directing and/or writing in it (though he did have a hand in the writing, there were others there to reign him in). The man may have made a damn fine universe, but he's not all that adept at actually writing stories in it, IMO.
If he woke up tomorrow and decided to read all the Star Wars books and came to the conclusion "Wow, this is all garbage, pull all future releases and have this expunged" that would be that. Everything would be N-canon, end of discussion.
Quote:Except that ending doesn't make sense. Oh, the Dark Side is destroyed...wait what? The Dark Side is what happens when people choose to use that power for their own greed and self-aggrandizment. Saying that they "destroyed the Dark Side" doesn't make a lick of sense in the context of what the Dark Side is. Saying that they destroyed is akin to saying they expunged all the evils of mankind from the universe.
Fear, violence, hate, of the Dark Side these things are.
They destroyed one user, true. But they sure as hell didn't destroy the concept.
Quote:It's not about the post-RotJ novels or the comics or the rest of the EU. It's about trying to make sense of a universe that has at least 20,000 years of history that has been alluded to, as well as events that are referenced in the movies.
Did you watch/read Sleeping Beauty and think "But how could the regional economy recover from the overnight loss of trade that an entire, and obviously prosperous, kingdom provided? What were the social and political ramifications of that kingdom's sudden disappearance, and then reappearance after 100 years? How did the people of that kingdom deal with being living anachronisms when they woke up?" I didn't, because they don't matter. In the family friendly version, the princess and her kingdom are saved, true love triumphs, and everything works out in the end.
Star Wars is exactly the same. It is a contained story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. There are a few tidbits thrown out to give it a passing semblance of history before the movies, but nothing more than is absolutely necessary, and never dwelled upon. -
Quote:Ahh. I see.No, she's not. I'm not even talking about the novelizations and whatnot, but rather extrapolating that universe to logical ends. You cannot simply erase Evil by the death of Palpatine, nor can you erase the Empire with his death. At best you have an anarchy state since there is no one/thing in power. Saying that it's 'better than it was' is while technically true, not the whole story.
If we accept that that universe has a backstory of at least 1000 generations, then we also have to accept other things. As well as accepting references to stories outside the movies themselves (Han's speech about the bounty hunter on Ord Mantell for instance) we have to accept that those stories exist.
Good can triumph over that particular Evil, but when Good rests on its laurels, Evil gathers power.
As far as Lucas goes...well, to me, he lost credibility when he has a 14 year old (elected Queen no less) falling in love with a 9 year old.
"This guy owns an awesome sandbox, and I love it, but I don't have to listen to his rules because I don't like them."
Got it.
Feel free to extrapolate all the 'What If...'s you like, and try to inject realism into a space fantasy about wizards with lightswords in a galaxy far, far away. Plenty of authors have, with decreasing degrees of quality. However, at the end of the day, the movies and Lucas' statements define truth for the franchise.
When the credits roll in Return of the Jedi, the Empire is finished, the Dark Side is destroyed, and everyone lives happily ever after. The End.
You don't have to like it, but that's the way it is.
None of which should prevent you from enjoying the post RotJ novels. Lots of folks do. I don't, personally, for the most part, but these days that just saves me money on books I don't have to read.
Fortunately, I can watch the films, get to the end of RotJ, and turn off the film knowing the story is finished. -
Quote:In this case, she's right. At the end of Star Wars, according to Lucas, Good triumphs over Evil and everyone lives happily ever after. There isn't anything after Jedi. The Dark Side is gone, the Empire is gone, Anakin is redeemed and that's it. No Solo/Organa brats, Luke doesn't get married, Boba Fett is dead in the Sarlacc, and everything is better than it was before.Wow...so the death of the Emperor completely eliminated any person's need for greed and power. What a fantastic world you live in.
And you honestly think that because you cut off one head of the massive military apparatus that is the Empire, the rest will just lay down their arms and give up their worlds?
Naive, you have a new poster girl.
End of Story, that's a wrap, last page of the storybook.
Sure, there's a lot of officially licensed and published 'What If...?' fan fiction out there, most of it worse than what you'd find even in a cesspit like Fanfiction.net, but as far as Lucas is concerned, none of it happens. Now, clearly he thinks there are some stories to tell before the end of Jedi, which is why we get the prequels, The Clone Wars animated series, and the potential live action series, but that's about as far as it goes. -
Quote:This is one of those extremely rare cases when I generally agree with GG.To be fair, Lucas has been trying to kill that program since it aired.
Also, GG, we get it, you're a purest. If it wasn't on film, it didn't happen.
Which isn't to say that there hasn't been some decent or even good official fanfiction out there, such as BioWare's KotOR. But when push comes to shove, the movies are the final word for me. -
Not saying this will or won't kill WoW, but 'what if...'.
I wonder how Kotick would feel about being remembered as the guy who caused/presided over killing what may be one of the most profitable games created to date.
I'm sure that would go over really well with the Board of Directors and on his resumé. -

Quote:Be that as it may, Activision/Blizzard does have a legal department. Assuming the Legal Department didn't burst into flame, killing everyone inside and leaving just a mostly burned scrap of paper saying "This is ... a good idea", then at some point, legal counsel following the CYA principle had to say "While you can technically claim the forums are optional, this might not be worth the trouble it could cause, legally speaking."in my experience, this smells of upper level executives, it takes the right level of lack of real world skills, knowledge of technology and responsibility for their actions to exclude it from people who work with or vaguely understand the game, only an executive could be this deluded.
And even if legal all died in a fire, any marketing department worth the name should have stood up and said "Err...this has the potential to go wrong in so many different directions, it probably isn't worth it."
Given the fact that not only has the official post reached something like 1700 pages, but that game sites net-wide are aghast, and even international news agencies like BBC have picked up on it, Activision/Blizzard now strides with the giants alongside the likes of EA with their "Sexually Harass a Booth Babe" campaign. -
I'm just stunned how enough people at Activision/Blizzard could think that was a good enough idea to even get this far.
I mean, a couple of people with a crackpot idea I can see, sure. Happens all the time. But this had to go up the chain, level after level to get approval and resources devoted to creating it.
To me, this goes beyond an organization-wide failure of common sense right into pure denial of reality. -
Quote:I'm betting on the redhead as a borrowed body.I agree with the first paragraph of your quote.
As for the second, I think it's the latter (i.e., she's spent the majority of her career using other people's bodies). I'm working on an arc sort of about this at the moment, but I can't get one of the missions to play right. (BlueBattler, feel free to PM me on this if you want, since it was one of your posts a couple years back that gave me the idea for it.)
Note, though, that the recent backgrounder on her Praetorian counterpart seems to imply that Shalice Tilman's career began rather more recently than World War II. Basically, like so many other points in the game's backstory, character age is a garbled mess, but no more so than a lot of things in the two major comic book universes. -
It's only because villains are better than heroes.

Marshall Brass.
I'd like to know what he's potentially hiding, and why he hasn't moved further up in the ranks. -
Quote:Actually, I was just coming back to nominate you as best poster, Sam.What, am I supposed to just bow down and agree with opinions I disagree with? Are we back to the old "It's my opinion so it can't be wrong." shtick? We don't have to all agree with each other. How does that equal "coming down" on someone?
After countless posts by you about how broadswords aren't big enough, and you just never had hands giant enough to fit your "petite character with giants gauntlets" motif until the Valkyrie set, and so on and so forth, to see you here arguing against someone with the exact same problem of visuals interfering with a character concept, only in a set you like at the moment, well, that's pure comedy gold.
Five stars, sir. Would read again. -
Ah yes. The City of boards are so much more civilized than other games' forums.
Why, no one would ever come down on someone here for offering a negative opinion based on available information. Nope. We're all civilized, open minded folks here, who certainly don't make assumptions that everything will be awesome based on a flashy preview. And we're not at all blind dev fanbois and apologists.
Nope.
Never.
Not here.
Just good civilized open minded discussion.
I'm so glad that it's acceptable and even encouraged to offer up a differing opinion here without fear of the frothing herd blindly stampeding on you. It's refreshing.

Quote:If you've seen the movie Equilibrium, then combine that with the effect animations from the Archery powerset already in game and you've got pretty much all we've seen of Dual Pistols so far. It's of interest to me that in the past, in the Suggestions forum, I've seen the idea of Dual Pistols shot down by saying how boring such a set would be. And now that it's en route and fancy (presumably, I haven't seen the video), someone is saying they wished it wasn't so fancy.
I haven't decided what concept I'm using for DP, but I know I'll have one. I'm kinda into fancy and unrealistic myself. Blaster or Corruptor, what and which side to choose.
If you haven't seen the movie Equilibrium, you haven't missed anything worth seeing. -
-
Quote:Some sort of mini-shotgun shell for the cone, and a mini-explosive round for the AoE.I'm just trying to figure out what kinds of animations would be necessary to make a non-flashy DP set that also included at least one cone and one AoE. I mean, realistically, a pistol is a piss poor choice for someone who's going to be taking on super-powered or super-armoured enemies, unless they've got some massive tricks up their sleeves (like Malta Gunslingers, who notably wouldn't have good enough powers to create a solid Blaster set) or so much ridiculous "skillz" as to not fall into the realistic category. In this case, we seem to be getting both.
-
OP:
How dare you not like your dual archery with selectable damage type set?!
You mean you didn't like Rain of Bullets? Or Fistfull of Bullets? What's wrong with you?

Quote:I thought that and the shot with the Rikti in it to be the two least impressive screenshots available. You just need to look at the "before" and "after" screenshots of Valor Bridge to know GR is made of 100% awesome
The Resistance and Mother Mayhem's fortunata, err minions were tied for third. -

In all seriousness, I do have one quibble about the graphics upgrade.
The environment looks awesome, but the character models still look about the same as they do now. So you'll have spiffy looking updated environments, with 5 year old pasted on faces, mitten hands, and a really, really ugly run animation. Wow. Now I remember why I always wear a cape.
While we're at it, a new skeleton for the models is way overdue, if only to add on more attachment points for even greater costume variety.
Now, maybe changes to all that are going to be announced in the coming months, and I hope they are, but I found the contrast between the top notch looking environments and the 5 year old character model (with reflections!!!111one) to be pretty jarring. I imagine it would have been even worse had they used an original hairstyle and some of the original costume parts instead of the much newer helmet hair and RWZ+Cyborg pack costume.
