Yeah. I really like your build, and I've already started a SoA to try it out. Also, why Hover and not Combat Jump? Just a final thought.

Quote:...You know, when you put it that way, it suddenly makes a LOT of sense. I've wanted to do flashback arcs with my two main toons, but since they're all slotted with 50+ SOs and IOs...well, you get the picture.Of course! In fact, your question is ... amusing ... since if you ever really delve into what the difference is in *throughput* on your powers by raising the levels of the IOs, you'll often find that you gain "not all that much" on a great many powers by using max level Set IOs, while at the same time losing entire level ranges in which you could have been getting Set Bonuses (and now won't be). So it's a tradeoff. I prefer to have a build which offers consistent performance across the widest range of Levels ... versus a build that offer maximum performance at only the very highest Levels.
If it helps to think in terms of automotive technology ... I like my characters to have a Wide Torque Band that yields consistent power levels across a wide range of RPMs, rather than the alternative of a Peaky Torque Band that offers maximum power in a narrow range (Levels 47-50, specifically).
It's something I "discovered" on my MA/SR main back in Issue 9-10, who needed a whole slew of Set Bonuses in order to maintain NO GET HITSU! as the focus of the build. Needless to say, the first time I had to Exemplar to run a TF, I was *shocked* to see all of my Defensive Set Bonuses simply GO AWAY and I was left with gaping holes in my build that were quite intolerable in actual gameplay. So rather than building "for ambition" (ie. Level 50 Set IOs), I set my sights lower and asked the all important question ... "If I'm not building for how HIGH I can go, what happens if I build for how LOW I can go, and still remain operational and effective?"
Quote:I don't have an exact bookkeeping accounting of what it cost me to acquire all the IOs for this build. It *IS* complete though, at this point, and fully slotted out with IOs. Total fabrication and acquisition costs are somewhere between 100-200 million though (which by modern standards is "dirt cheap!"). I acquired a lot of things via Reward Merits, and after Issue 18 we had the opportunity to burn INF+Merits in order to get Alignment Merits which can be turned in (by Heroes and Villains only) for Set IO Recipes. I did a lot of INF+Merits=Alignment simply for the convenience factor, and because I was flush with cash (with nowhere to go) at the time and was "in a hurry" to get it done, so it cost me a good bit more to finish than it otherwise might have. There are of course some recipes that you simply can't *buy* off the market, simply because there's no supply, due to the fact that those recipes are dirt cheap to buy using Reward Merits.
For "expensive" things like the Numina Proc and the LotG Global Recharges ... I just ignored the market and used Reward Merits for those. Even at 100 Merits and 40 million INF over 2 days ... it's still WAY cheaper to get them that way than to go to the market and drop 200 million on a Recipe or an Enhancement that's already been built.
...You know, do you think it would be possible for you to help me with builds that work like your own? I've had some builds provided by other folks but it's all ridiculously high-end stuff with costs upwards of 300-400+ million (or MORE), and it just kills me to think of earning the inf for a build like that.
Also, and this is just out of curiousity, would it be possible to do a Huntsman/Bane build that used the Primary as well, even if only in limited amounts? I'm relatively new to the game (god I sound like a broken record with how often I've said that, but it's true only been playing since May) and trying to use Mids has been rather painful for me since I apparently suck at building a character. -
Quote:So...do you still do end-game content and do well? I'm not faulting your build or anything, just curious really. I never thought of slotting that way, and it's an interesting concept to be sure.Nope.
I'm one of those (weird?) players who like to be able to Exemplar/Malefactor and play lower level content (Flashbacks, Task Forces, Strike Forces, etc.) and not lose all of my Set Bonuses. For this reason, I don't slot everything with level 50 IOs, unless dealing with either single slot powers (in which case Set Bonuses are moot) or Common IOs. Commons will get upgraded every 5-10 levels or so between 7 and 47 with a fresh batch of 10-50 Commons (if I can remember to do it). IO Sets however, I tend to slot for low level applicability.
Level 22 IOs offer their Set Bonuses at Levels 19+ (because 19+3=22) ... and Level 19 just so happens to be the upper bound of an entire group of Flashback Arcs.
Level27 IOs offer their Set Bonuses at Levels 24+ (because 24+3=27) ... and Level 24 just so happens to be the upper bound of another entire group of Flashback Arcs.
Also, how expensive was your build? I can't believe it was all that costly considering you're using lower end sets. I don't plan on stealing your build or anything, but it does look nice.
Quote:The Huntsman's appeal can be summed up in a single word.
FUN.
As a Huntsman, it's all about Gunnery & Grenades. Stand in one place too long, and you'll be ankle deep in brass casings (slight exaggeration). It also *sounds* awesome when you've gotten everything slotted (finally, by Level 50) and you can just crank the ammo out.
The Huntsman is also a "faster" animating group of powers than either the Bane or Crab equivalents. As I found very much to my surprise when I went and looked ... a Huntsman shooting a hand-held gun (ie. Soldier attacks) can crank out 6 distinct attack powers in the time that it would take a Bane or a Crab approximately the same time to animate only *5* distinct attack powers. This makes the Huntsman "feel" quicker and more nimble, more responsive to player input and changing circumstances. -
I noticed that your sets are all level 27s and what not. I assume as you get higher in level or when you eventually hit 50, you start switching from the 27 sets and IOs to the 50s, correct? I'm just checking because I recently unlocked VEATs and I'm thinking about trying out various builds.
As I'm new, might I ask what the appeal is of the Huntsman is, as opposed to Crab/Bane? -

Quote:I'm a KM/WP Scrapper, I took the Body Mastery Ancillary, Jumping as a my travel power, and the Fighting Pool. My Alpha Slot is Spiritual, Interface is Reactive. I was told that, as a KM Scrapper I should maximize my recharge to make up for my lower base damage. You could start by telling us what your primary and secondary are, what you enjoy or think you'd enjoy doing with the character if it was capable of it, and what your budget is. Then we can give you a general idea of what is possible, what sort of powers you should be taking, what sort of set bonuses you should be looking for, that kind of thing. Or if you don't want to go through the learning process, we can give you a cookie cutter build. Or you could post the builds the two people gave you, and we can tell you if they're good or not, and what might be improved.
Right now I only have 140 mil as a budget, and I know that won't get anything much at all, but let's just assume for the sake of the build that the budget isn't a huge issue. Also, I don't intend on going with full purples or anything. -
...and I'm not even sure where to begin. I mean really, I've been playing since May, and I decided since I've got T3 in all my incarnate slots I should maybe buckle down and work on a build...
Except that I have no idea where to start or what to do. I've mostly just been taking powers left and right based on what I saw and what I liked, slotting in SOs and the occasionally IO to replace it, but I haven't gone anywhere near sets yet, and to be frank, I have no idea WHERE to begin.
I keep on looking at the Paragon Wiki and looking at enhancement sets to see what I might want/need, but I can't decide which would be best. It's all incredibly confusing for me.
I'm almost tempted to just remain with my SOs/IOs as is for the sake of conveinence. I've had at least two people give me builds, but I'm just not sure. Coming up with these things on my own is just brain-wrecking.
Where should I even start? -
For me, it's a tossup.
For example, on my Demon/Therm, I've taken all three attacks because they're useful, at least for the -res effect on each of them.
My new Necro? I'm not sure. I may just take them all anyway for the heck of it since they're all -hit, which isn't bad when you stack on Twilight Grasp and Darkest Night. -
After seeing a few MMs in action, I felt compelled to give them a shot on my own, and I've rolled quite a few (Demons/Therm, Mercs/Traps, Thugs/Dark, Bots/FF). And after playing around, I noticed a trend among builds here:
Ignoring the primary attack powers.
Now, outside of Demons (because of the -res effect) I can somewhat understand why you'd skip them. They're not worth the damage or the end it takes to use them, and only a few of them have worthwhile secondary effects. But, after trying a Bots/Traps with NO attack powers I found the entire experience to be incredibly boring and dull.
Being stuck with only your Origin attack and Brawl to do damage outside of the single pet you have until you hit higher levels is just ridiculous. On top of that, there are many uses for the primary attacks that I believe get skipped over.
For example:
-Hold procs/Achilles Heel: Most people see powers that do damage and want to slot them for that damage. But MMs aren't supposed to be doing the majority of the damage, their pets are. So, instead of getting these attacks to do extra damage, why not slot them for debuffs and other secondary effects instead. Combined with the Reactive Interface, you have an attack that supports your pets, and by default, your party.
-Active Participation: I feel that an MM that just "AFKs" during combat (doing nothing but slinging heals or buffs with their secondary, if at all) is a lazy and boring way to play. It's especially bad when you have to solo, and you do nothing but stand there twiddling your thumbs while your pets sling out attacks. After all, yes, your attacks aren't comparable, but it IS still damage, and every little bit helps.
And it also depends on the power. For example, Necro's Dark Blast, Gloom, and Drain Life have -hit built in, which works wonderfully with the proper enhancements, whereas a Merc MM has no good reason to take the Grenade.
Likewise, Ninjas and Thugs share similar attacks (one fast, one somewhat slower, one cone), which makes it more up to the player in question as to which they'd want (me personally? I go with the fast attack and the cone, to maximize the number of times or targets I can hit).
But I feel that this unspoken "consensus" of ignoring the primary attacks isn't fair, considering the options you have in terms of sets and procs. It's like saying KM's Repulsing Torrent is useless when you could slot it with Kinetic Crash. You shouldn't be taking attacks strictly to maximize your DPS.
But that's just my 2 cents. -
Quote:Sadly, I didn't get very far, as I was only really spamming Warmth and Cauterize, with the occasional Fire Shield. The low levels are agony.Issen, I can't say how far you have played the thermal set. It is very back-loaded in its boss killing and AoE debuffs at level 35 and 38. The new changes to thermal buffing will make your life so much easier with more time for lash and crack the whip! The endurance reducing /resistance buffing Cardiac alpha was tailor made for demon summoning/thermal.
-
I'm sure this topic has been done to death, but I honestly cannot decide. Thematically, DS/Dark fits better with the magic motif, but I could make either work just fine (Dark just fits easier).
At the same time, after trying a Thugs/Thermal and realizing why Thugs/Dark is so damn popular (because it's so damn GOOD) I find I'm divided. Dark is very End heavy with toggles and the like, and Thermal is not.
But Dark is easily one of the best MM secondaries ever, but Thermal cannot be discounted as it has good buffs and a nice set of heals (even if Dark has the best rez ever).
I'd like to pick just one. But I can't seem to stick to just one. (And yes I could make both, but I'd rather not. -
It's more that many people find kb to be an annoyance (others find it to be endless fun). Honestly though, what you want on a Km/ build is recharge for Siphon to be up alot, and that means you'll have better buttons to press than the Torrent. Might as well free up a power slot for something else more interesting.[/QUOTE]
I suppose? I mean, to be honest, after my friend did my 50 build above I still had a single power slot remaining. This is mostly a concept character, so I'm just not sure what else would fit.
Well, the pool fits with the concept. Admittedly, it DOES sort of make me a one-trick pony (my only attacks are the KM attacks), but again, it fits with the concept. -
Quote:This is true, but I'm typically not soloing, if I can help it. I much prefer group play (especially with my SG). And unless someone in the group turns up the difficulty, I'm usually always playing at default (+0/x1 I believe?).A couple things stand out to me.
-Build for defense. Willpower feels a little underwhelming against massive odds, like soloing spawns for 4 or more players, which most scrappers seem to thrive on.
Quote:-Repulsing Torrent - skip it. It doesn't give you a damage buff during power siphon, its damage is Frak, it doesn't have a -dam effect, and it's knockback isn't even consistant. About the only thing it's good for is PvP, where it's damage is decent.
Quote:-Resurgence - skip it. I actually like rezs like Phoenix and Soul Transfer, because they have a period of untouchability. Resurgence will pick you up, and you'll likely go back down before you can get all your toggles back on.
Quote:-6 slot your attacks. Thunderstrike's 6th slot bonus still grants extra E/N defense even though it's primarily ranged defense. Kinetic Combats are also a little lacking in terms of overall enhancement, and franken-slotting a lvl 50 ACC/DAM/REC and a lvl 50 ACC/END/REC (any set) in the last two slots really shores it up. Where to get those extra slots? Here's a few powers that you're spending too many slots on. Only my opinion.
-Mind over Body - only needs 4. That endurance enhancement will net you a bigger endurance discount if it's in an attack.
-Rise to the Challenge - You can got with 3 or 4 on this one, but don't waste the 4th on a tohit debuff enhancement.
-Strength of Will - I wouldn't slot this for resistance, I personally only have it two slotted for a steadfast 3% and a gladiator 3%. Yes, grinding out a gladiator 3% with alignment merits was worth it to me.
-Physical Perfection - Willpower sees little return from this power, given it already has Regen up the wazoo and Quick Recovery, and most people will tell you it's not even worth a power choice, let alone slotting it. If you do take it, put a miracle or a performance shifter in it and call it a day.
-Find a place for a Winter's Gift. Willpower has no resistance to secondary effects like end drain and slow resistance. Energy defense will help mitigate end drain in many circumstances, and the 20% slow resistance from a Winter's Gift will go a long way to reducing the headache from caltrops, web grenades, and cold powers in general. Most travel powers are still plenty effective without enhancement, and slotting this IO in there instead is well worth it. -
To those of you asking about the origins or purpose of the build, I just had a friend whip up a basic level 50 build. After all, I'm new to this game, so the nuances of slotting and procs is still something I'm learning.
The build (basic as it is) is essentially a template, a starting point. I likely don't have the money right now to even create this build as it stands now. But it's something for me to work for.
While I'm definitely not the min-maxer others are, I don't want to be completely gimped, hence my asking for second opinions. -

Hm, seems my friend is using the most current form of Mids. Well, can anyone offer any advice?
-
Quote:Hm, I didn't consider that. I could try and send you the file itself so you could open it, would that help?I see a few things that jump out at me right off the bat (RttC doesn't get much out of -ToHit enhancing, Repulsing Torrent is...less than decent), but not being able to open the build makes it difficult to really offer advice. It looks like maybe your friend used the older (pre-May 8th) version of Mids.
-
I'm new at this whole "MAKE A BUILD!" thing, so I was wondering if someone could just whip me up a basic 50s build for a DP/Dev Blaster. Something that won't cost me 10s of billions of inf, as a starting point.
The pools I selected/plan on selecting are:
Speed (Hasten)
Jumping (Combat Jumping, Super Jump) [Note: I was using Super Speed, but found that Super Jump is just SO much better]
Fighting (Boxing, Tough Weave)
Munitions Mastery (Body Armor, Surveillance, LRM Rocket)
I realize it might be a bit much for me to ask folks to whip up a build for me, but if I have something to work with early on I can tweak it from there. Well, that and I've only been playing CoH for about 2 weeks now and a lot of this is STILL new. -
So, I made my first Scrapper a few days ago based on a concept, and went with Kinetic Melee/Willpower. I'm terribly new when it comes to the whole Mids thing, as well as dealing with enhancement sets, so I had a friend whip me up a basic build for when I hit 50.
Obviously this build isn't optimized or min-maxed, as you notice that the total cost likely won't be billions of inf, and the fact I still use some basic IOs in there. I'd just like a few pointers from forumites on this, or some ideas on things I can do improve the overall build.
Oh, I went with Crushing Impact over Mako's bite because of the Acc and Rec that Crushing impact provides, as a note.

I'm new to these forums, so I think this is the place to go. I'm currently trying to get my trial version to work (One of my friends has successfully converted me to CoH!) However, the updater seems...stuck.
It says it's currently fixing the piggs/sound.piggs but nothing's downloading. It's just stopped. I'm not sure why, it was downloading fine a few moments ago and now it's just stuck. The 7-day trial is currently active, so I'm eager to get this problem resolved so I can use my trial, something to whet my appetite for later.
Does anyone know what I should do? If this is the incorrect board or if I missed an obvious solution, please forgive me, CoH is possibly my first subscription MMO, I'm use to more F2P games.
