Who says 36 is plenty? NCSoft is looking to hang onto players-- why not offer more slots?

    [/ QUOTE ]
I would guess because there is not sufficient demand. Only the devs know how many people have filled all slots, how many have filled over half, etc. If 99% have used less than 30 slots (picking a number out of thin air), don't expect any increase.
  2. [ QUOTE ]
Well I already have a name and an outfit and a "basic" concept. I was going to call him, I have the name reserved right now, Insomnious and he hasn't slept for around a year now, and that has given him superhuman abilties....

    [/ QUOTE ]
There you go. So ice doesn't fit at all. Willpower seems to fit the best, but invuln could work also.
  3. [ QUOTE ]
    Do I need it?

    [/ QUOTE ]
eh, it depends on your play style.
I freakin' love it! I don't play my fire/fire brute much so I always have a ton of patrol XP. Of course, if I'm paying attention, I wouldn't get debt anyway.
    1. Situation starts going south.
    2. Self destruct.
    3. Rise of the Phoenix.
    4. Profit.

I've altered my play style to accommodate this tactic. If we find a group that will be a problem, I volunteer to go in first and do as much damage as possible before / during / after dying.

    The "Red Carpet"

You could also go the opposite route. Change the SG colors to both red, put down a line of floor tiles, then change the colors back. Of course, you can never use that floor tile type again or it will reset all existing ones. (I have not tested that, but that's how the banners work.)

    Questions on IO

    [ QUOTE ]
As you level up just use whatever level IOs become available to you. Upgrade them all when you get to 32.

Once you have 35s in everything, getting higher level IOs as you go is just gravy.

    [/ QUOTE ]
This seems to be pretty common practice and it's what I do. I'll slot level 35 common IO's and never touch them again unless I decide to use IO sets at some point.

    Respec question

    [ QUOTE ]
There was a message that popped up and I clicked ok before I read it.

    [/ QUOTE ]
This drives me nuts. I hear this at work occasionally.
"I got an error message from the software." (which I wrote)
    "What did it say?"
    "I didn't read it."
    <sigh>

The pop-up would likely have provided useful information and it might have allowed us to tell you exactly what the problem was. As you've seen, though, all people can do now is speculate.

    My suggestion: try again.
Sometimes connection problems cause it to fail and it might go fine this time. If it doesn't, pay close attention to any error messages.
  7. [ QUOTE ]
So, did you guys also go through the other 49 supposed threads on this topic and give them crap too?

    [/ QUOTE ]
    Unless I missed one.
  8. Then you're doing something wrong. Did you take your mez protection power? Offensive toggles are sure as heck worth taking and they do NOT get turned off much (hardly ever) if you're a scrapper or tank.
  9. [ QUOTE ]
Is this a topic of interest for either the players or the developers?

    [/ QUOTE ]
Offhand, I would think the answer is no. Thirty-six slots is far beyond anything needed by the vast majority of players. If you need more, get a second account. I got a second account for the additional slots back when we could only have 12 per server. I currently have 20 or 21 characters on my 'home server'. Having a second account lets you do lots of other stuff, though, so it's useful.
  10. They work okay together. There isn't any 'synergy' that makes it a good combination, but there also aren't any conflicts that make it a combo to be avoided. My first tank was inv/EM and I took him to 50 and still use him for tough content.
  11. One the one hand, nothing is tougher than a stone tank running Granite and this is the preferred tank for 'high end' stuff (like the Statesman TF). However, granite armor gimps your movement and damage and a lot of people really don't enjoy that. Stone is kind of a specialized set for the uber tough content.

Invulnerability would be a reasonable choice. You can face anything in the game and don't need IO's to be able to do it. I've tanked Lord Recluse in the STF on my invuln and, when I got my Master badge, we had an invuln tanking.

Having made those comments, I don't think one of the requirements for your first tank is that he should able to tank the STF. I would suggest building a tank for the other 99% of the game and not worrying about Lord Recluse.

Lots of tanks can handle 8 man spawns on invincible. Sure, stone and invuln can do it. So can ice, shield and willpower. I don't have a 'feel' for dark armor (and, frankly, haven't even looked at the numbers on it). I would not suggest fire for a first tank as it's kind of squishy and you're specifying big teams on invincible. Can a fire tank handle that? Yes. Can someone new to tanking handle it using fire armor? Maybe not.

Overall, I would say you should pick a set that is 'friendly' to players new to tanking. I would suggest invuln, ice or willpower. Shield is also not bad but it doesn't give you any assistance with hit points or endurance, so I consider that a black mark on the 'first tank checklist'.

As for picking from one of those three. I dunno. Have you got a concept in mind? Not everyone likes the 'look' of ice. Some don't like the look of invuln. Have you picked a secondary? Some work better with certain primaries than others.
  12. [ QUOTE ]
The beginning levels of an Ice Tank are a little painful. Your defenses aren't really solid for a while, and with the fantastically amazing Chilling Embrace you're going to be drawing a lot of hate that you'll need to figure out how to deal with.

    [/ QUOTE ]
If you mean specifically because of Chilling Embrace, I agree. I didn't take it until level 22 (i.e. once I had SO's).

If you're saying ice is bad at low levels in general, I have to disagree. The defense sets seem to work much better at low level than the resistance sets.
  13. [ QUOTE ]
and might even make Burn a bit more viable as a damage dealing power.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Definitely. My /SS tank has Arctic Mastery and Ice Storm makes them run. I always do Foot Stomp right after Ice Storm.
  14. [ QUOTE ]
Bender usually tells someone to "Bite my shiny metal [term I believe is censored on the forums but it a 3 letter word for what we sit on or another name for donkey]."

    [/ QUOTE ]
The best variant was when Leela asked him to interface with the Femputer.
"How about you interface with my ***. By BITING IT!"
  15. [ QUOTE ]
Isn't the multi tiered pyramid illegal ?

    [/ QUOTE ]
If by "illegal" you actually mean "against the forum rules", then the answer is yes.
  16. [ QUOTE ]
What if you replaced, or added another choice, in the Flying Power Set? Instead of Group Fly, you could purchase "Turbo Boost", which is a Click Power that gives you 30 seconds of extra flight speed.

    [/ QUOTE ]
You already have that. It's called the 'Good vs Evil Jump Pack'. It gives you a 30 second boost to flight and hover speeds.
  17. My ice/SS doesn't have Tough or Weave and never needed them. I have both on my shield tank, but ice has Hoarfrost and Hibernate so it's easier to deal with emergencies and take 3 other powers. Another factor is that I was focusing on damage, rather than defense.

Combat Jumping is good on any defense set. I have it on my ice and shield tanks and my /SR scrapper.

Icicles..... I built mine for soloing a lot so I definitely wanted Icicles. It's not vital to the set.

    I skipped Hand Clap.

I don't have Taunt. Please note: I took both Chilling Embrace and Icicles and have some taunt slotted in Energy Absorption.

Hibernate is one of those powers that doesn't need anything else. Drop a recharge in the default slot, unless you're going for set bonuses.

I didn't take Hurl. Lots of people do. I figured I could wait for ranged attacks and took Block of Ice, Ice Blast and Ice Storm from Arctic Mastery.

If you can afford it, or get lucky, slot the Steadfast Protection +defense unique. 3% defense on everything from one slot. Priceless.

I would say the most skippable power in your primary is Permafrost. I really only took it because I wanted to put IO sets in it and that's your place for resistance sets (assuming you don't have Tough and Hoarfrost is 'busy').

Next most skippable... either Icicles (it's a lot of damage, but you might not be concerned with that, though you probably are if you're taking SS) or Hibernate. I hardly ever use Hibernate but I had to take it because it's just so darn good for when everything is falling apart. It's a really good power.

If you are interested in damage, Rage / Icicles / Foot Stomp / an AoE (I took Ice Storm) is really brutal.

Least skippable powers in the primary: everything else, I guess. Aside from the three that are varying degrees of skippable (but I took them all), the other powers are essential.

SS: you're forced to take Jab. You must take Knockout Blow, Rage and Foot Stomp. I also took Punch and Haymaker. Hand Clap is counter-productive, in my opinion. Taunt is up to the individual and your goals with the tank. Hurl - totally subjective. Someone people want that ranged attack ASAP, some don't care.

Oh, and Kruunch mentioned Stamina at 20. That's a no-brainer for any non-Willpower tank unless you have a REALLY good reason. My invuln took Stamina at 30 so I could get Aid Self and Tough first and I let other people do the damage. He's built for large teams. Some ice tanks respec out of Stamina after getting Energy Absorption. This is viable, but Stamina is only one power pick since a tank REALLY wants Health, so I don't think you're saving much.

At least now we know who's been going to unboxednekkidcodemonkeys.com.

pohsyb: Congratulations, and enjoy the honeymoon.

What? Something about a code monkey?
  19. Prestige and influence were doubled also.
As for when, if I had to speculate, I would guess mid-July or so.
  20. [ QUOTE ]
Without question universally and emphatically "NO". The Merit reward system could have been a good idea if it were a purchase system instead of a purchase "chance" system.

    [/ QUOTE ]
It *IS*. You can use it both ways. But the random rolls are cheaper so some people take them.
  21. [ QUOTE ]
It's easy. (and half the time I get stuck running the team. Ever try to do team management stuff with superjump?)

    [/ QUOTE ]
No, but I can carry on a conversation between teleports.
  22. [ QUOTE ]
It seems I am a complete moron, and merely moving my PC fixed all of my overheating problems.

    [/ QUOTE ]
I read this as: moving my PC probably took it from 'barely overheating' to 'barely NOT overheating'. It sounds like you don't have a lot of leeway on the heat issue. Definitely make sure your vents are clear and consider an accessory to keep it cooler. Even something as simple as getting the laptop up off a solid surface can help it stay cool.

I knew someone who used his laptop on a tabletop and put a pencil under it, near the back, to get it slightly off the table and that actually made a difference. Something a bit more sophisticated should be able to deliver better results.

I've heard that "money is the root of all evil".

Listen closer. The actual quote is that "the love of money is the root of all evil."
  25. [ QUOTE ]
Ahh good... I was worried that the rage crash woulnd't synergize well with a def based primary like ice. 10 sec def reduction I can live with.

    [/ QUOTE ]
    Yup, not a problem at all. I have a lvl 50 ice/SS.
