  1. I am considering playing with a new controller and I am really unable to decide which of the multiple possibilities to choose.

    First I must tell you that I don't PvP and that I mostly team (probably will duo a lot) but that I occasionally solo.
    Also, my main controller is a lvl 42 (nearly 43) Mind control / Empathy and I love it. I love the hard controls, I love the fact that I always have something to do in a team situation (hate to sit idly at the keyboard) and I like to be able to do some damage (yes, Mind control does enough damage to solo).

    So far I have created three new controllers to try something new:

    Cosmic String - Gravity / Kinetics - leveled to 14
    Susan von Doom - Illusion / Force Field - leveled to 6
    Gaia. - Earth /Storm - just created. level 3

    I would like to know if those combos can offer good playing synergies, if they are very difficult to solo, what's your advice on highly skippable powers and must-have powers...

    Maybe the combos are not the most efficient... but they make sense to me in a "concept" kind of way: gravity + kinetics plays with the forces of gravity in the primary and secondary. Earth + storm is the power of mother Earth. And for Illusion + FF I have an alternate dimension Susan Storm (of the Fantastic Four) that met and married Victor von Doom instead of Reed Richards: she has the invisibility and force field powers... and some more. 8)

    For what I have read in the boards, here and the US ones, the combos that seem "cooler" are Fire/Kin, Fire/Rad and Illusion/Storm, but those doesn't offer me good concepts to work with.

    Anyway, forgive my ramblings... I am asking for advice about build and power synergies... cyes, I want a "concept" character... but I don't want it to be gimped if possible!
    One last thing: do not tell me "Try all of them for some levels and then decide". If I had time to do that... I would not be asking for advice!! 8)

    Vigilance?!?

    I think that what would really be in the theme of defenders is an inherent that gets proportionally stronger:

    - The more teammates you have.
    - The more enemies in range.
    - If the enemies are higher level.
    - If the enemies are higher rank (i.e. lieutenants and bosses).

    So, if your defender is in a team of eight against +4s and faces a really large spawn witha lot of bosses and lieutenants, his/her buffs/debuffs become proportionally stronger and gets some +recharge and endurance reduction. This could be good soloing and in teams.
  3. I have a Mind Control/Empathy controller and so you see how important I think CM is, I will tell you that, before I respecced out the Fitness pool and was short on power choices, I chose CM before Recovery Aura or Regen Aura.

    For me, CM is one of the best powers (or even the best) in Empathy and the reason I chose the set for my controller.
    Mind control is a very busy set, and Mind/empathy is really multi-tasking and, in a team of 8 against tough enemies, kinda stressful. Anyway, if you team with me and you haven't your own mezz protection (aka. "you are a squishy") you can give CM for granted. In fact, I am constantly spamming CM, Fortitude and Adrenaline Boost... and I am not a defender! I need time to control mobs!

    I usually buff teammates in the time it takes to go from mob to mob. CM goes first to the defenders/controllers that can grant some mezz protection to me, then to the other defenders/controllers and then to the blasters/kheldians.

    I primarily play squishies (my 50s are a blaster and a Warshade) and I know that not being mezzed is key to survival... not only to the squishy but to the whole team. Blasters mezzed => enemies live longer => some tankers may die => teamwipe.

    In fact, the two things I hate about some Empathy users are: no proactive CMing the squishies and Healing Aura set on auto-fire (aaaargh!).

    This weekend has been quite busy. I had to drive my wife several times to her parents home. Her mother was sick.
    I had to cancel my participation in two TFs...

    On the bright side, my wife's mother seems to feel better already.

    Whatever the team needs, they are all above level 30, (except Lupo who is 26) and haven't done that TF...

  8. I have a Kat/SR scrapper too, which is nearly lvl 38.
    I was considering not taking Elude.
    The recharge is veeeeeery long and don't see the benefit in adding more defense if I nearly have 45% on ranged and more than enough in melee (with Divine Avalanche).
    In what situations would you use Elude?

    As I have three blasters (Inercia lvl 50 En/En, Tesla Legacy lvl 15 Elec/Elec and Fyrefrost lvl 39, Fire/Ice) and two of them have the Snipe attack, I think I will keep my Ice Sword with Fyrefrost.
    Certainly I would rather have Blazing Bolt than Flares, but then, the new Defiance allows me to fire Flares when I am mezzed, and that makes that power a must (at least for me).
    Now that blasters can use their Tier 1 and Tier 2 primary attacks while mezzed, I think this will affect (slightly) a lot of builds.

  13. I have a Fire/Ice blaster and I was thinking in doing a little respec to get the maximum benefit from the new defiance:

    I have all the powers from Fire/* except the snipe (Blazing Bolt) and some from the secondary: Chillblain, Ice Sword, Build Up, Ice Patch, Shiver and Freezing Touch. I use hover and fly.

    I was thinking in getting rid of Ice Sword to get Blazing Bolt, so getting a nearly pure ranged blaster (except for the hold, that works great if some baddie gets close enough). I have read the snipes provide a great bonus with Defiance 2.0 making them good openers.

    Please, advice!

    I am planning to create a new character, a defender obviously, otherwise this would not be posted here... ok, I'll go and sip a coffee...

    Back.

    OK what I wanted to ask to the defender gurus:

    Kinetics + Electric Blast OR Kinetics + Radiation Blast

    I think the first has a good endurance draining potential (transference + short circuit) and the second has maybe more "melee" range powers that would benefit from the kinetic buffs.

    What would be more effective and more "synergic"?

    Also, I would like to know if those combos could be more or less easily soloable, because my highest level defender (lvl 35 dark/dark) is very good defending teams but has the damage potential of a crippled turtle and it takes ages to kill anything with him. Everybody says Kinetics is very good and lately there has been quite some talk about Fire/Kin controllers. All that has made me want to roll some Kinetics character... and don't really want it to be a Fire/Kin troller that needs to wait until level 33 to get enhanced Fire Imps to shine.

    So far, my experience with those sets (Kinetics/Electric Blast/Radiation Blast) is practically non-existant: Grav/kinetics controller to level 10, elec/elec blaster up to level 14, rad/rad defender up to level 22 (deleted), rad/elec defender up to level 15.

    All your input will be very appreciated.

    Ah! And I think the bafge info you linked is incorrect. AFAIK, the first respec gives you Stalwart Medallion, the second Statesman Star and the third Freedom Cross.
  20. I have created a new Super Strenght /Elec Armor brute and I am planning her stamina-less from level 36 and above.

    My plan is to take the powers I like up to 18 and then respec (veteran) at lvl 20 to get Hurdle+Health+Stamina all at once (so, loosing two "fun" powers in the process).

    Then, at level 36 (once Power Sink can be slotted), I plan to respec again (Trial respec) to loose Hurdle+Health+Stamina and get some fun powers (Hand Clap, Hurl...)

    In my Warshade experience, you can have a stamina-less build if you have a good and fast Endurance recover power (like Stygian circle for warshades) but not a slow Endurance recover power (like Consume for Fire tankers).

    Do not think that Conserve power will save you many endurance problems, since it recharges waaaaay too slowly to be up often. Even with three recharges and lightning reflexes and hasten and +recharge IO bonuses Conserve power won't be up as often as you would like. I finally respeced out of it in my Energy/energy blaster...

    With three recharges and only one enemy, Power sink can give you 25 endurance every 30 seconds, though it costs 13 endurance to activate. So, it can give you 25+25-13-13 = 24 endurance/minute.

    With three recharges and three endurance modifications: 48 endurance/minute... when stamina three slotted gives you about 50 endurance/minute (half of natural recovery).

    Remember that those calculations considered only one enemy (e.g. AV fight). Usually, as a Brute, you'll be sorrounded by three enemies at least.

    Also, do not consider only the small +recovery from some IO bonus. If you slot complete or nearly complete sets in your attacks (4/5 IOs from same set) to get the more appealing +recharge and +accuracy, it is most probable that you are slotting some meaningful Endurance Reduction in your attacks. And remember that attacks are the most endurance/consuming over time powers you have. Endurance reduction in attacks almost always saves you more endurance/minute than in your toggles.

    I can fit Maneuvers in my build if needed, but let's decide after we see how it goes during this session.
    Once we got some more essential powers, I think we will be lot tougher to kill.
