Lone Hero DID apologize, publicly and very graciously, and Bill snarked at him anyway. So, feel free to call Bill a complete moron.

  2. Thing is, a player may belong to several different SG's since sg's are character specific, and a player may have many different characters. So, judging a SG because of a player is useless.

Use the star rating system to flag the player. That way, you'll be aware of them no matter what character or SG they are using.

I predate villainside and PVP. Would you like to actually have me answer with that degree of experience, or would you prefer getting pissy over getting more information? If the second, I'll just say "Go here: http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Main_Page and don't ask anything that's covered there" and leave it at that.

For future reference, that *is* me getting rude, which I'd call perfectly justified in this case. Me answering a question? That tends *not* to be.

Y'know Bill, I was right with ya up until this point. I mean, the guy apologized VERY graciously 2 hours before your post. After that, what's the point of being snarky, except to reinforce his preconceptions from another community? Whether you think you're justified or not, that was really un-cool.

Sorry, I thought that my answer was pertinent to your questions 1, 2, & 5. If you look at the information in the two windows I described, you would have your answers. I've always thought that knowing where to find the information was more useful in the long run...

  5. When you go into base edit mode, there will be an edit bar along the bottom as well as two smaller windows to display the details of your edit choices.
One of the smaller windows is for room/base details, it also has a tab for lighting (ambient).
The other smaller window is for item/wall/section details, which also has a tab for color (paint).

While you are in edit mode, your chat windows will disappear. To bring them back, just press "c". There is also a global chat channel you may want to join called Base Builders, Inc. Lots of base builders go there to ask questions, talk about techniques, ask folks to "come look", etc.,.

A support player or two can easily supply sufficient damage. No tank? a scrapper can take a decent amount of damage, especially if a support player is covering him by weakening his enemies or making him tougher. In fact a team of all support players with no main tank or damage dealer is still an extremely effetive group. Also, there are several power combinations that people will say are the best, like Fire control and kinetics for a controller, or fire blast for blaster, or stone armor for a tank. While these ARE effective power sets and combos, it is not possible to make a "bad" character. You may be less effective than others, but by no means are you useless. Basicly, I recomend a scrapper for your first character. Personally they are my favorite archetype. They can take a hit, and dish out some hefty damage. Controllers are another one of my favorites, and while they can be very hard to play (especially if you are solo), they are potentially extremely powerful. Blasters are a bit of a challenge as well, but only because they are fragile. Not a complicated character to play. Then there are tankers. I personally dont like playing tanks, I find them kind of dull. However many people enjoy them and thay can make a major difference on a team. Defenders are another archetype that is potentially frustrating, but very fun, and quite powerful. Then there are Warshades and Peacebringers. You don't get to play them until you get a character to lvl 20, and they are possibly the most complex archetypes, namely because of theyre ability to shapeshift. As a human they can deliver modest damage from a range, and have some decent powers to resist damage. However they can shapeshift into a kind of flying squid, and deliver a powerful ranged punch, but they lose virtually all of theyre damage resistance. They can also turn into a large, lobster like creature. This form is wicked tough, and can heal itself. However this form is slow and can only attack at a close range. All in all, no archetype or powerset is bad, but they are all unique. Try out a whole bunch of characters before you pick a favored archetype.

Oh, and welcome to Paragon City and/or the rogue isles. I have found the CoH community to be a very friendly one in my 5 years here, and I hope you have the same experience. As for a starting Server, I recomend pinnacle. It is a small community, but there are enough people to get stuff done. It is also the friendliest server I've been on, and in my experience, most peple are very tolerant and understanding of new players. if you do decide to play there, look me up. My global name is @szpek (if you wanna talk to me, type "/tell @szpek, inseret text here"). I have a small casual supergroup (basicly a guild) you're welcome to join
Not to detract from the general sentiment but...

    DUDE!!!
    WALL OF TEXT!
Break it up, please... my eyes, they bleeeeeeeeddd!

As for my contribution, well, I ain't got much more than what folks have already said here.
I highly recommend Mids Hero Planner for working out power combos/builds/enhancements. Sure wish someone had pointed me to it early on.

    Water trick?

yah... the slow field needs to be crafted from one of the special base crafting tables. It will require some salvage + prestige to craft. Since it is a "defensive item", it can only be used in rooms that will accept/permit defensive items in them.

The bug that makes some of them look ugly is actually connected more to what you have your water graphic settings at (this is due to the Ultra Mode changes). So, if you have your graphic settings at medium for water effects, it actually looks somewhat decent.

The slow field will only cover one "section" of the floor. The trick to getting the water effect from it, is to actually place it above the floor level by using the special "floating" technique.

As some of you may have already guessed my avatar is in fact a Schooner. I guess I should explain myself. I am from Australia. We have seven different territories/states and each has its own rules. Let’s start where I am from, in Queensland. A Schooner is 425 mL so it’s about three quarters of a pint and is probably the most common measurement that a typical Aussie man would ask for in a bar. Alternative measures are a pot, which sounds bigger but isn’t, it’s 285 mL. Or you could ask for a glass which would be 200 mL.

Over in New South Wales, schooners and glasses are the same but a pot is called a middie. In Victoria it is all the same as Queensland but in South Australia a glass becomes a butcher, a pot turns into the schooner and a pint is only 425 mL, which is a schooner in everybody else’s language.
In Western Australia a glass is a bobby, a pot is a glass and a schooner is a pot, according to some sources. But others say it works out the same as it is in Queensland except a pot is a middie as it is in New South Wales. That’s because in Western Australia a pot is 575 mL which is slightly more than a pint but close enough to be called a pint by all the English people who live there.

I am not making this up, it’s for real.

In Northern Territory a schooner is a schooner but a pot is a handle and a glass is a seven. Although another source tells me that a glass is a six not seven, because the seven is actually a pot and the handle is 425 mL which of course, in most other places is a schooner.

Stick with me on this, we only have Tasmania left to go.

In Tassie, just as in N.T. (probably) a glass is a seven. But a pot is a ten and a pint only 425 mL.

And if your still confused by all the mL's. Just remember that 425mL is equal to about 14.3 oz.

Hope this helps to clear the confusion.

    Schooner

    *head asplodes*

Beer glass sizes here are a crap shoot depending on what establishment you decide to go to.

If it's a decent place, the "small" is usually 16 oz, and "large" is 20 oz (and a few actually sell the "yard"). If it's a cheap place, they start at 10-12 oz and miiiiiiight go up to a 16.

No special names... just roll the dice.
  9. My instinct is to say "pray-tor-ian".
But when I consider the name "Danae" (Greek; Perseus' mother)... I've heard it "Dan-ee".

Are we talking about Greek v. Roman? or could it be a simple matter of placement? I dunno. Language changes with each culture that uses/borrows their words.

    .
  10. We've been asking for "non-raid" versions of raid items for a loooong time.
    Old Artwork + "non-functional/gated" flag = non-raid raid item
Really, could it possibly be that simple?

All North American City of Heroes servers will be taken offline for back-up maintenance on Tuesday, July 27th and Wednesday July 28th, 2010 from 6:00am to 8:00am Pacific Time (8:00 to 10:00am Central time / 9:00am to 11:00am Eastern Time).

They will then be taken down for an extended maintenance on Thursday, July 29th, 2010 between 4:00am and 4:00pm Pacific Time (6:00am to 6:00pm Central Time / 7:00am and 7:00pm Eastern Time).

Please be aware that these maintenances will also affect our European servers since the Auction House and Mission Architect will also be unavailable.

We apologize for the inconvenience this will cause some of you and are appreciative of your understanding and patience during this necessary downtime.
So, yes, there was some maintenance this morning... AND there will be maintenance tomorrow as well.

If you want to grouse abou..er.. I mean... discuss it... go to the discussion thread.

  12. Your acronyms are crackin' me up, Zube... and I love the Odyssey reference.
  13. That is very odd. I just lost/regained the red star after 37 days and had no problems getting things up and running again after paying rent.

I've not been bitten by the "inactive base" power bug, but we've seen several folks who have. My guess would be that the initial issue was the "inactive base" bug, which may have also entailed an incorrect message that you were paid up. When the bug was squashed for ya, the correct message was that you actually still owed rent in order to get things up and running again.

    Ambient Light?

Interestingly, even the "working lights" have different color temperatures (yellow/blue color) and intensity levels. I do like using them for specific effects. I tend to set the ambient light for the room first, then use the "working lamps" to accentuate various sections or to create special effects.
  15. Impish Kat

    Ambient Light?

Ambient light is adjustable with the "lighting" tab found in one of the small windows while in edit mode. I believe it is the window that also shows the room stats, not the one that shows item stats.

There are 3 "areas" for ambient light; high, middle, & low. These areas correspond to the areas of the room that the light affects. The "intensity" is on a segmented slider that can be adjusted for each "area".

You can color your ambient light, or set it to black/grey/white and adjust your intensity from that point. Setting it to black/grey/white will allow your wall "paint" colors to remain true, since black/grey/white is really just another way to express the intensity levels of colorless light...

"Painting" the walls is done in the other little window (items & such), when you have your walls "selected". Coloring the ambient light will change the color of your "paint" and can make for some fun overlapping and color tweaking. Keep in mind that colored ambient light will also affect the highlights & shadows of the objects/items in your room.

ETA: there is not actually anything labeled "paint", I think the tab is labeled "color". I just use the term "paint" because to me it more accurately describes the effect and distinguishes it from "light".

  16. What CaptA said.

Use the cubical to hang a wall item.
Take the cubical away & voila! The wall item remains "floating".

So, the trick is to place the cubical wall in such a manner that your hanging wall item will be "floating" in the position you want. (I hope that made sense)

    Just started

I might not have seen it, but has anyone mentioned Mids Hero Designer?

It's a great offline tool for planning out your powers & enhancements.

I definitely wish someone had pointed me to it early on (hubby didn't tell me about it until I'd been playing for nearly 4 months - the butthead).

    .
  18. I would much rather have a delayed release date if it means the product will undergo proper testing and be less buggy.

    Thank you.

Not necessarily, there is a format. Once you know the format, you look for certain key phrases.

Sometimes, it's not only a matter of what is written, but also that which is NOT written that one needs to be wary of. It is actually a severe LACK of several key phrases that makes me cringe at FB.

    Posting Pictures

I am one of those weird folks who actually reads the privacy policies and such. I was unimpressed with FB's privacy policy combined with it's "mission statement"... & don't EVER intend to jump on that bandwagon. *shudder*

For posting pictures, I usually host on imageshack. If it's an "important" pic, I'll re-size it to smaller/lower quality in PhotoShop first. I'll also keep those photo links in the account I have there, which allows me to delete them any time I want (yes, I'm a pseudo-control freak). I also keep a notepad file for my picture links... again, for the "important" pics. There are plenty of pics out there that I don't care about, and don't necessarily keep track of.

Once I have a url for the image, I just use the image tool at the top of the message box.

  24. FYI folks, Art Lead David has started up one of his "All Things Art" threads for booster packs.

A lot of focus has been on mutant/monster/animal packs. A few brave souls have spoken up for a SG booster pack, but we could use some more voices.

Head on over and give him your ideas.

Head on over and let him know we NEED more base items, and we'd be more than HAPPY to pay 10 bucks for them.
