  1. I WANT A GOLDEN GOOSE NOW!!!!!!!

  2. Meh when I see a scantily clad female "walking" around all I can think is:

    G.I.R.L.
  3. Seriously..another thread on this already??

I actually have no desire for yet another ground based detoggle travel power... once they make the bat/bird travel power... I may take interest in that.
  4. Water Blast has been out for around a week now on Beta. It is quite fun

    Looks at Sig.... sigh.. SOOOOOON
  5. 1. People are not attacking YOU. They are attacking your idea.

    2. There are three parts to the Ad Hominem fallacy: The only part that has happened is that you have made a claim. No one has refuted your claim by stating an irrelevant fact about you; thus using that irrelevant fact to dispute your claim. What has happened is that people have stated you have made the same argument over and over. What has happened is that you have not shown a reason aside from personal greed on why a change like this is needed. What has happened is you have failed to justify the change as something needed for the majority of the population. What has happened is that you have taken on the victim role because others have attacked your logic and inability to reason.

    3. You have stated this is not an issue of Creativity, but you have failed to negate this assertion with any use of the commonly used terms and application of the word.
    cre·a·tive   [kree-ey-tiv] Show IPA
    adjective
    1.
having the quality or power of creating.
    2.
resulting from originality of thought, expression, etc.; imaginative: creative writing.

The current system is based on using creativity. What you are proposing is the exact opposite of creative. You are proposing a plan which would in fact take away one's ability to be an individual...this is NOT creative. Your attitude is not about creativity it is about defeatism. Defeatism is the exact opposite of creativity as it is giving up...not looking for alternatives..not being imaginative.

You can claim all you want there are no "good" names left, but this is a subjective opinion...one which many people disagree with. Names are themselves a product of creativity and as such are purely subjective...as is all creative forms... think art and music.

If you are going to suggest something...only to get mad when others differ from you..and then claim you are being attacked personally...and use this to "sway" opinion... you are utilizing a fallacy yourself: The Victim Fallacy.

Personally... I find when a discussion falls into the whole "fallacies" area... it is over. Everything that can be said has been said. We can agree to disagree. And I will continue to disagree with a change from the current naming system until a NEED arises and a reasonable alternative that does not stifle one's creativity or individuality is proposed....

No common ground?? Hmm let's see:
    We play the same game
We both have to think about names that fit the theme of our character
We both have limitations placed on those names

Seems like we have a pretty common ground to me.

Just because my current toons are named as sentences does not mean I have not had other toons. My change to sentence names was within the past year before that I had:

    StormScorch
    Fixxer Upper
    Fruity Tootie
    Bubblelicious
    Control Phreak
    Maiden Taiwan
    Your ExGirlfriend
    Maiden Hades
    Nex Dea
    Belle Bataille
    Spectral Lemonaid
    BurntFrost
    Frosty Treats
    Tricky Trick
    Terrable
    Ima Screamer

Just to name a few of the hundreds - by the way feel free to take any of these as I have deleted all of those toons around a year ago - so they may still be available.

I spent the entire thread mostly defending why the singular option even needed to exist, and what character flaws it implies to believe it ought to exist.

I've concluded that as I'm fine with the status quo, and no on has yet produced a strong enough argument to challenge the status quo, there's no specific benefit to me to attempt to convince anyone that any particular course of action would be reasonable, when no action at all is currently being contemplated.
See... I have no issue with the status quo. I find the challenge of finding a name opens me up creatively instead of stifling me or my characters. I have yet to see a REASON why a new naming system is NEEDED.... There are millions of possibilities for names out there..whether they are desired or good names is a matter of subjective opinion. One man's trash is another man's treasure.

Yes we will because I define creative as being faced with a problem...and overcoming that problem with whatever tools you have available to you.

    Defeatism=/=Creative

And there's nothing creative about tearing down a perfectly good character concept just to choose a name that doesn't fit. Many of my characters are easy to fit with the current name system. But many are not.

What royally peeves me is when my argument for a different naming system gets boiled down repeatedly to the ad hominem of "you lack originality and creativity". Claiming that because my creativity springs from a different direction than your means I have no creativity is the height of elitism, and does nothing to help the discussion. Which is convenient, since it allows you to off-handedly dismiss the discussion.
Not calling you un-creative, but I disagree... renaming a toon based off the examples you gave..is creative in my book.

To me creativity is more than thinking up a simple name...it is taking the challenge and being creative about it. I honestly think Blue Beetle rates pretty low on creativity whereas I think Azure Scarab...pretty frickin creative.

It reminds me of Boggle...where you look for all kinds of words in a puzzle. If you constantly use the same 4-5 letter words...you are not using your creative side as much...and get a lower score....because a lot of people see the same ordinary words in the boggle puzzle and disqualify your choice. I love the challenge of naming toons and would think seeing the same name over and over followed by @Global would be silly....and frankly quite boring. The creative names people come up with this in this game...make me smile.

And there are more duplicate heroes than you may think in comics. There have been as many as three, perhaps four Flashes operating simultaneously. Two Batmen. Two Captain Americas. At least two Spider-Women. Over three thousand Green Lanterns, four on Earth alone. Two Wolverines, Hawkeyes, Spider-Men... all the Avengers in the Dark Avengers storyline. Two Iron Men (before he was War Machine, Rhodey also went by Iron Man, even as Tony was in the suit). There are currently two Hulks (even though one is Red, his name isn't "Red Hulk", it's just "Hulk"). Two She-Hulks. Two Human Torches. Duplicate hero names aren't that big a deal in the comics.
Not to nitpick but CoH is not a comic book. Yes it is based on super heroes; who are mainly in comic books...but it is not a comic book mmo.. it is a super hero mmo...hence the title of the game: City of Heroes - not City of Comic Books.

I'm sorry you can't get THE name you want, but what right do you have to take away my individuality that I have had on a character for 5-6-7-8 years? CoH is a SOCIAL game...and truth be told I do not want Joe Schmoe out there in Broadcast with a duplicate of my name saying things that I would never say. Sure my friends may know it's not me because they know my global... but Player A who sees I BURNT THE TOAST screaming profanity or racial slanders in broadcast.... will probably react negatively to me if they saw me 15 minutes later. I'm sorry but I have little faith that scenarios like this would not be a daily occurrence as there can be quite an immature player base spouting off in various channels. I can see duplicate names being used to harass more well known players in this game...sadly. There is nothing to stop me from creating a new Forbin Project, Arcanaville, etc... and doing my best to ruin their reputation in game.

So no I am not for duplicate names unless their is a clear indicator that the duplicate is just that...with some type of preface such as @OtherGlobal: Duplicate Name .... otherwise... thanks but no thanks.

So, sorry but I'm against this idea because it would cause more headaches for the GM's.
I am not FOR the idea... then again I am not FOR any changes being made to the naming system as it is. I'm not gonna sit here and tell people to be creative etc, but imo there is nothing wrong with the current system. I see plenty of great names still being created every day...and I play on Freedom one of the higher population servers.

Any changes that would require @Global being put into names is not something I want....as I think it actually takes away from the individuality of characters. There are PLENTY of great names out there...and even as "odd" as my names are (more sentences than names)...it can still take me hours to come up with a name I truly like; not because names aren't available but because I want the name to be something unique and fitting that toon. I do not write Bios for my toons... my name is my bio...it conveys what I want people to know about that character
  13. One word: Redraw

I LOATHE REDRAW on "blast" toons...and lemme tell you why...

    It FEELS slower.

With that said.. I would love my fire corruptor to be using a wand or something mystical, but redraw irks me! My Fire Corruptor is /time and putting my wand away every time I would go to do a /time power would just irritate me to no end.
  14. I don't mind a system that allows duplicate names IF the person who had the name first sees no alteration of THEIR name.

In other words (not that I think anyone would choose my name but using it as an example)

My main toon is: I Burnt The Toast

If someone else came along and wanted that name I think their name should appear as:

    @Global:I Burnt The Toast

If this were the system.. I would make damn sure I never had a name that had @Global:Name because frankly I think that looks about as stupid as it comes

If a new naming system came that made all my current toons have @Global:Name even though I chose the name first... I would be a lil upset. I personally think such naming systems are stupid looking and take away more from the individualization of the game than anything. But hey if Joe Schmoe is happy with @Global:Mecha Man then so be it.

I truly am tired of all these "name" threads though...and wish they would just go away. I see people create toons on a daily basis with some very cool names and a lot of the time I think to myself "Wow... I am surprised no one had that name before...."

I'm not saying people who support new naming procedures are lazy or unimaginative, but I just hope IF something ever happens to allow more "diverse" names that it does not affect me and my already unique names. I take great pride in my names...and if a new policy were to come along that butchered them ala putting @Global in front of them... I'm not sure if that would be the final nail in the coffin for me, but I do know it would push me away from this game.
  15. I prefer the social part of teaming. Doing missions etc by myself is just boring. If no one is on I know.. I will ask a random lowbie if they wanna join me.If this was a purely solo game I would have quit after a month or two. And unlike some people...I love the itrials and TFs
  16. Meh too early for me... Will be on my way home from work at that time... otherwise would gladly join.

  19. Gratz on installing the game What server did you choose to play on?

Hope you find some people to help you along in game... you will find most people are very helpful to new players

Just because someone is capable of adapting and adjusting doesn't mean they like doing it - if I'm used to driving a Ferrari and all of a sudden I'm given a Ford Focus, of course I can still drive it, it's just nowhere near as fun. People left after I13 not because they were incapable of adapting, but because they'd rather not continue playing a game that no longer provided the speed and variety they were looking for.

This is cute coming from you, Bud.
I find most discussions about pvp to be pointless as nothing big will happen to pvp. The last major thing to happen to pvp was over 3 years ago...and people still complain about it like it was last week. I like pre Issue 13 pvp..and post Issue 13 pvp. They both have/had severe flaws, but I learned to work around those flaws to do what I enjoyed with pvp. That is what I meant about adapting... Comparing the old pvp to a Ferrari is laughable btw I would say you had a Ford Focus and now you have a Focus Hybrid....both still Fords and both still have major issues..one is just more expensive than the other

Did you pick a server to play on yet?
  22. The Marvels - Welcome to CoH. Feel free to look me up in game if you ever want to team. You will notice some people being quite the Debbie Downer in this thread...my advice is to play the game yourself and judge it from there.

I have played for almost 8 years now...tried the other Hero MMOs..and well..they just do not compete with CoH in my opinion.

I am not sure what level of a premium player you are, but feel free to send me an in-game tell (@I Burnt The Toast) - and I will gladly show you around. FYI I play on the Freedom server.

Good Luck and most importantly.. Have fun!
