Quote:You're playing free form right? Get a good block power, an active defense and slotted passive. At level 20 I was able to take on groups of 5 +3 enemies on my ranged damage build (Granted a lot of that was one shotting or near one shotting everything with Ricochet Throw before I even aggroed them half the time.) I feel like characters are much more powerful before the level cap in CO as opposed to leveling characters in COH. Now at level 33 on my second tank build with regen as my passive I haven't found much I can't handle, albeit with slower clearing speeds. Being able to switch between builds on the fly is a godsend in that respect though.
That's fair.
Still not a fan of the active block. I'm not a ******* twitch gamer. I haven't been for a few years now.
And, to be fair, with my KO blow and FS equivalents, I'm killing more enemies quicker.
I just hit 20 and he's fairly decent. Just really irritating at times. A lot of the game irritates me. Stuff I've taken for granted from day 1 in CoH, stuff Cryptic got RIGHT the first time and promptly forgot.
And yeah, the multiple builds is cool. -
Quote:Haven't played enough to talk about control-type characters there.I'll miss my Masterminds and my Dominators a lot, but I'm vaguely excited at the idea of putting together a Freeform character. (Or several Freeform characters)
But if I'm not mistaken, some of the gadget-based ATs acquire pets.
Quote:I just hope defensive powers in CO live up to their hype. That's going to be the deal-breaker for me. My Unleashed was not as sturdy as I expected, but that was before I read through their (woefully incomplete) wiki and learned a little bit about how CO's mechanics work, and that "melee" didn't automatically equal "class with damage reduction" like it does in CoH. If my Tank or Hybrid with the Invulnerability passive is still getting easily KO'd by a a group of two or three punks with handguns at the easiest difficulty setting, I'm out of there.
I dive in, then spam foot stomp with a little buildup and stuff just dies.
The only thing that's making me feel less than "super" is the fact that more than about 8 enemies and I'm toast. No matter what.
Quote:(All that said, if Paragon Studios reforms and starts active development on CoH again, I'll be back to CoH in a heartbeat and never look back) -

Quote:I went and recreated my main over there. He'd been created previously, but I'd deleted the original to make way for something else at the time in beta.Maybe, must maybe, Champions Online will be it. For me, the first step is the creator. And I'm not entirely unhappy with my recreation of "The Knave of Trumps" in the CO-verse.

I'm a bad person.

"Yeah. That 8' tall tank with the blown-out proportions? The one who's smiling so hard he looks like he got zapped with a mega-dose of Joker venom? Go tell him you like NCSoft stuff..." -
Okay, trying REALLY hard not to bawl like a little kid who just lost his best friend.
Michelle,
Thanks for all the hard work and love you've put into these videos over the last few years. They're part of what kept me here in the first place. The game is great, the devs are great, the community is great and your videos have been just outstanding.
Uh...excuse me for a minute.
Something in my eye.
...dammit can't see the box of kleenex! -

Quote:That it would have been a very competitive/outsold WoW?
Just curious what you all think. Personally, I would rather have people blatantly copy this game than WoW (Not like champions or DC, like, Carbon clone with different names and such.)
Would it have outsold WoW?
Not in a million, billion, trillion years. I'm not sure who (or how many) at Blizzard sold their souls for this success. But WoW is just an absolute mutant phenomenon of an MMO. I honestly don't think ANYTHING's going to duplicate the ridiculous level of success it had.
That said, would CoH have benefited from an actual and continuous advertising budget?
Not to put too fine a point on it, but HELL YEAH!
Think about how many comic shops there are in the US.
Polybags every now and again.
Ads in comics for each issue and maybe a multi-page booklet format for expansions?
I honestly think that, with a proper advertsing budget, CoH could have continued drawing players in at a healthy rate and maintained MUCH higher retention numbers.
Paragon at least understood that a great community can do wonders for retention. But NCSoft, I don't think, understands the community aspect of these games and how they can be used to drive profits. All they tried to do was eliminate any and all expenses. Never mind the fact that, at times, you have to spend money to make money.
What could CoH have done with retention numbers in the 100-150K range?
God... -

Not seeing it here.
What server you on? -
Quote:Actually, there's another tie for 'praise a dev' for me, although this is more 'praise a mod.'
Ex Libris and Lighthouse.
Of all the community rednames, those two knocked themselves out for me when I was making videos - and Ex got me the gig of presenting (TWICE!) at HeroCon 2008. Invitations to betas so I could film, telling everyone in the Paragon offices as soon as a vid of mine went online, they were incredibly supportive of me (and of the other videographers as well).
Another reason I mention them is because of their experience with me as a game videographer here in COH, they got me gigs for other games as well (PAYING ones, too!). Ex was the one who got me the contract videographer job at SparkPlay for Earth Eternal, and Lighthouse got me the ongoing contract videographer gig for Spacetime Studios (Pocket Legends, Start Legends, etc).

That's actually really damn cool Michelle! While you might not have been an "official" videographer for CoH, your involvement got you real gigs elsewhere. -
Quote:In CO they consider the group of enemies, not the single guy: If before you died you killed every single member of the group you were facing they don't respawn, but if even one was left alive everyone will respawn and you will have to fight that whole group once again. In the alerts however that don't happens and the guys that you killed don't respawnQuote:This mechanic of three NPCs, you kill two and the third one kills you; you respawn at start of mish and have to fight the same three NPCs ALL OVER AGAIN until you manage to defeat all three is a simply exhausting mechanic, and one that sucks a great deal of what fun there is out of Champions Online.
Its just drudgery.
What I hate are the RIDICULOUS amount of "hunts".
And the fact that you HAVE to return to your contacts. Which is why I tend to grab as many missions from them as they'll give me.
What REALLY peeves me off are the hunts that are:
- Insufficiently explained in the mission text
- Not given a bounding area and/or actually tells you the wrong general neighborhood.
Teaming is really primitive over there. Plus, the looting system isn't automatic and round-robin. The looting style is picked by the team captain.
One piece of advice to people building free-form melee toons.
DON'T neglect to take "closer" attack right away.
Movement in-game is so slow that if you don't have a closing attack, you're going to get mauled when you eventually get knocked back and have to waddle your *** back over to the enemy.
Another, pay CLOSE attention to some of the gear you get early on. Some of the stat-boosts on the early component drops from missions are SIGNIFICANTLY better than a lot of the stuff that comes along later. -
IF they're able to scrape me out of the CoH server cabinet(s), I'll be over in CO.
It's not CoH. And the art style still induces nausea and headaches.
But I've had an LTS there for quite a while now that I haven't used since Open Beta really.
It's kinda hard to argue with "free". -
Basically NCSoft did a prorated refund of outstanding subscription time from September 1st onward.
Also, they refunded all points purchases back to August...25th if I'm not mistaken.
They did this for everyone. -
Quote:And a little blast from the past. Just for a much needed giggle.Quote:So I was on with my SG on Champion a while ago, and we were doing the Positron TF. At one point, we were ambush right in front of Positron and Valkyrie. So here's all these guys shooting at us, trying to kill us, and Mr. Bigshot "I got my armor upgraded" and Ms. "I have this fancy spear that none of you can get!" are just kinda standing there watching.
THANKS A LOT, LEGENDARY HEROES!
Seriously, though, it would be cool if the trainers got some sort of automated power similar to the police drones. There's just something wrong about the eight most famous heroes in all of Paragon city standing there watching you get pounded on.
All that crap is grey to me, no XP.
And yes.
THREAD NECRO BABY! -
I might not LIKE it, but if they threw beefy enough servers to handle more than 3000 people at a time, I guess I could see transferring some toons over.
Seriously though, the number of servers is almost a non-issue. It's RIDICULOUSLY easy to virtualize that kind of stuff nowadays. And with even a semi-decent SAN back-end, you'd be hard pressed to ever tell the difference without diagnostic tools.
Oh yeah. The other evening:
Freedom TF channel: 8 people
Protector TF channel: 64 people -
My heroes are my parents.
It sounds goofy, and I a massive trial to them when I was younger (they'd say that nothing has changed on that front).
With my dad. I dunno. How do you design an almost totally unflappable dude who just gets up and goes to work day after day after day after day and actually does his job. If I had half the work ethic that man had (he's retired now and 72, so he's in "I'm just gonna sit down and watch me some TV, leave me alone), I'd be a billionaire." He just became a grandfather last year when my brother's triplets arrived. My parents aren't "Granny and Grampy". They're "Grammy and Grumpy".
And my mom. German/Irish. Brute. Period. And yeah, someone took the height option on her all the way down. So there's enough fury to make an entire country-full of Hulks simply overload and explode. Even nowadays, I'd rather tank every GM, AV, iTrial boss, and Hamidon SIMULTANEOUSLY on an unslotted Level 1 Empathy Defender in Rest than have her ticked off at me.
But that much energy can have positive outlets too. She was always there for us. Band, Scouts, Tae Kwon Do, Little League, you name it. And if she wouldn't put up with MY BS, she'd be damned if she'd put up with others (as some of the people in these activities had their little "personal fiefdoms" that she basically went thermonuclear on, then turned around and made actually profitable). All while working two jobs.
Yeah, my brothers and I nearly put her in the looney bin a couple times (wish it was a joke, but we were little fricking monsters as kids and she got almost NO support from her family or my dad's).
Case in point, one of our neighbors was a guy who had definite "opinions" about women and their proper "place" in the world. We would occasionally lose a ball in his yard. We couldn't go in, the guy kept a doberman who was rather feral. Instead of eventually getting them back to us, he'd keep or destroy them. My mom gave him a dressing down that'd have R. Lee Ermey lying broken and sobbing on the floor.
So the next time my father went to take the trash out, this neanderthal followed him out there and basically told my dad that if he didn't "get control of his wife", that he'd thrash him.
Well, my mom had seen this guy follow my dad out and was standing behind him with a baseball bat...
"Yeah. And while you're doing that, I'll be caving in your ******* head you *******!"
This relic finally up and moved away a few months later. But he never said a damn thing to my parents again, and anything we'd lose in his yard would just wind up back on our side of the fence. -
Quote:Haha, agree to the full extent I must say.
I mainly play counterstrike 1.6, and as you say someone or some people often need to take the brute force of the fire, and die in order to succeed.
Translation: "Leeroy Jenkins? That snotnosed young punk? I was running in and dying (but actually taking an honor guard to hell with me) before he was a gleam in his sire's eye!"
