That'd be something Tony and I need to discuss (since he's the first). Do we want a "room" or "crash space".

Granted, the latter might be more economical, but that's something that needs to be agreed upon.

And in any case, I'd be calling dibs on a bed. Done way too many years of "And you get the floor!" when working cons.
I'm also kinda wary about it too. My last year of "group organization" was the last Milwaukee GenCon. I wound up having to make three trips up to Milwaukee (one two days before the con) to insure we had rooms, then half the people no-showed at the last minute and I got stuck with the bill. If I'm going to grab a big room (or suite) for something like that, plans for everyone involved need to be ROCK FRICKING SOLID (so even if you no-show you still pay your part of the room).

Nope. I'm fscked up enough as it is. Alcohol would be superfluous.

Did most my drinking while I was overseas and it was legal for me to drink while under 21. I did more than enough of it to know two things.

1. I hate the taste of alcohol. Hate it. Passionately. I'm incapable of being a "social" drinker. I drink to get rid of the alcohol as fast as possible so I can go drink something I can actually stand the taste of.
2. I've tried the "getting drunk" thing. It took a phenomenal amount of alcohol (did I mention that I can't stand the taste?), and the worst I got was "comfortably numb", which I wasn't too fond of either. Think of it as trying to cure a headache by eating fresh, raw willow bark instead of asprin.

As such I've had two beers since I left the service, and two "hard liquor" drinks. Known as "ER PPCs". A regular PPC is grain alcohol or other distilled clear spirits at 151+ proof and a shot of something to give it taste. An "ER (Extended Range) version goes for 190+ proof. Essentially the drink I had was 190 proof + Peppermint Schnapps. Didn't get me drunk, but sure as hell cleared my sinuses out!

I don't smoke. I've had all of half a drag of one cigarette in my life and after I stopped choking and picked myself up off the floor I swore I wouldn't have another.

3. A drive set that doesn't support TRIM in RAID

Agreed. Defrag strategies on SSDs are only for very specific corner cases. None of which have much to do with real performance gains.

I only mention it because I'm "retentive" and wax didactic at the drop of a hat.

SSDs have the following edges:

• Generally faster
• Generally quieter
• Generally cooler (lower power consumption)

They have the following "issues"

• Higher cost per-GB
• Due to the above, SSD in the "acceptable" price range are usually an order of magnitude smaller than mechanical drives.

For instance:


$120-200 will buy you:

1. A 1TB laptop drive.
2. A 750GB Hybrid drive (750GB HD with a 32GB "caching" SSD welded on)
3. A 40-120GB SSD

If you're one of those people who keeps their install drives clean and moves things off the laptop quickly, that's fine. And performance is PHENOMENAL.


If you're one of those people who treats a laptop like a desktop machine and accumulates "stuff" all the time, you're going to run out of space FAST.


And for a size comparison. A 512GB SSD is available. But one of those costs nearly $700.

But that's for my needs. They are very much awesome in a lot of other ways, and I DO recommend them to individuals... but man... those are seriously screwed up machines, IMO, hardware wise.[/quote]

Not getting into this. It's neither here nor there and only serves to draw flames. Can we just put the "I'm a Mac, and I'm a PC *FIGHT!*" thing to bed?

You can build a box and hack a copy of Darwin onto it. But it's NOT the same thing as running OSX. OSX won't install on non-Apple hardware without hacking and Apple won't support it.

No, as in VRAM. And the lower VRAM is going to limit options that one can use if one is trying to play at higher resolutions.

There's no such thing as 100% reliable hardware from anyone. Period.
There ARE highly reliable options within the Wintel/WinAMD space though. At multiple price points.

Actually, in recent years, diagnostics for motherboards has become much easier. ASUS even includes a diagnostics daughterboard on many of its offerings. You simply look up the code and it tells you exactly what's going on. No listening for beep codes.

Let's just say that there's a market for Mac products. And while I know that market, I'm most definitely NOT a part of it. Saying anything more than that will just make me sound like I'm being offensive.
