Quote:No. Not really. Just a realist.You sound like the old people at the McDonalds who freeze up when a group of teenagers walks in and orders chicken nuggets because one of them has a skateboard.
I was a sociopath as a teen. As was everyone else I knew. Some people grow out of it, many don't. Don't forget the fact that most sociopaths have thin veneer of civility and sociability so they're at least marginally functional.
Look at the DSM-IV definition of socipathy:
A) There is a pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others occurring since age 15 years, as indicated by three or more of the following:- failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest;
- deception, as indicated by repeatedly lying, use of aliases, or conning others for personal profit or pleasure;
- impulsiveness or failure to plan ahead;
- irritability and aggressiveness, as indicated by repeated physical fights or assaults;
- reckless disregard for safety of self or others;
- consistent irresponsibility, as indicated by repeated failure to sustain consistent work behavior or honor financial obligations;
- lack of remorse, as indicated by being indifferent to or rationalizing having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another;
Series B is there simply because, in teens, most of the symptoms of A are ubiquitous.
Series C, go look up "conduct disorder". It pretty much is a "yep, teenagers" thing.
Series D is there to help isolate diagnosis of APD from more severe forms of mental aberration.
I'm not saying this out of fear of teenagers. I don't fear them. I'm merely making a statement that all teenagers are sociopaths. With very few exceptions, the standard definition of Antisocial Personality Disorder (sociopathic behavior) is bog standard behavior for teenagers.
I say again, it's a combination of hormones, cultural indoctrination and basically just a part of being human.
Now the fact that this condition IS so pervasive is nothing to worry about. As I said, most people grow out of this behavior (hence the Series B age qualification).
Now if this continues into adulthood, or said kid develops dangerous super powers and goes on a killing spree, THEN you worry. -
Well, this is a T (For Teen) game.
Having enemies' brains and blood squirting out their ears and nose, body parts and other gibs flying all over the place and sticking to things, and enemies screaming like babies in a fire when you nuke them would probably NOT be acceptable.

Trade out Hand Clap for Taunt.
Hand Clap (and the associated KB) is a really BAD thing for tanks with AoE buff auras.
I recommend replacing Kick with Punch for the selfsame reason. -

Quote:Since it has to do with the Mac client, you're probably best off just hitting Customer Service.Since the most recent update, the game will go into a strange "forever loading" thing where I can't do anything. It displays only a black screen. If it is in fullscreen mode, the computer is essentially frozen, and CoH cannot be force-quit. If it is not in fullscreen mode, then I can force quit CoH but I cannot quit it regularly.
I've tried a few things, such as turning down graphics and making sure no other programs are open, but that doesn't seem to help. On the activity monitor, CoH quits taking up any of the threads and just sits there dead.
Anyone know what is going on? I'm using 10.6.7 on a 13" Macbook with a Intel Core 2 Duo processor and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M Videocard. -
Quote:That's semi true, but it comes off as a sorta as he becomes evil because everyone is mean to him. As if it is saying "yeah it's ok to be a jerk just because others are mean to you" it also seems to send the message of "you shouldn't bully people because one day they may be stronger than you" instead of a good message like "Hey you should be nice regardless of how the world treats you"
Conversely though if they had Matt or Steve become all villainy they'd send an equally bad message of "They're only nice to him and good is because they are so popular and have a good life" or "Just be glad they can't do worse because those popular people are psychos"
Overall I think it was just a little too forced with Andrew. Not that it's not realistic, but because the more they pile up on this one character the more they become unrelateable both in and out of the story.
Andrew is a loser who gets picked on in school, abused by his out of work father, while is mother is dying of sickness, who's only friends are the two most popular people in the school which came about by happen stance and he films everything for no reason who is also a virgin who not only has no skills but also recognizes he has no skills nor is he that intelligent and he doesn't seem have games or access to the net (or much) and he doesn't do drugs or play sports or read or do art or have any hobby defined.
From what we are told of this character we can only construct that his days are pretty much get bullied all day and sit in his room staring at the ceiling without thinking. You don't get the impression that he's smart or talented or doing well in school or anything that could give him that reality... all you get is him being screwed with and him looking at the ceiling doing nothing else more or less and everything we see other than that is a product of things that happens after the start of the movie.
He's a poorly developed character and doesn't work...
On the other hand Steve and Matt are far more developed and not just "well everything good happens to them" which is really kinda crappy because Steve is only really in there as a warning sign, which isn't utilized well at all either.
Matt, on the other hand, has a lot of deeper character. He's popular, he's nice, but he's not just popular and nice. He's also probably the smartest of the 3. He reads philosophy, has a girlfriend, has other friends, he's adventurous, and is thinking about the consequences of the actions that these powers might allow them to do.
now if you would have had Matt or Steve go evil and have Andrew as a tertiary background character you could have told better and more cerebral story imo. You see yourself in Matt or Steve because they are relatable and charismatic, plus they are completely different in their philosophies and I could see where they'd do this or that for their reasons. They would act like a hero or villain because there is so much you could do with the whole "fun loving politician" vs "Philosopher but slacker" positions no matter which way you go.
Andrew when you really look at him falls flat as a main character and noone can really relate to him because he acts like a child in his reaction and in his life in terms of throwing a fit and all like that, but he's not innocent in any way and as such his character is static and there is no arc there.
Honestly. The kid has been picked on and beaten down for a good portion of his life.
He's essentially been shown and acclimated to "might makes right". And, now that he's in a position to be a bigger, badder bully, he doesn't have the self-restraint due to all the suppressed anger and hostility he's been keeping bottled up.
His attempt to define himself as a new species and an apex predator is simply his way of dehumanizing others so he doesn't have to deal with the moral, ethical and emotional consequences of killing "people".
Note how broken up he was when his friend died, and how he just bottled it up when confronted in a hostile manner by his cousin.
You may think having the "picked on kid" go berserk is cliche, but it's honestly the most realistic of the three.
Look at how each viewed their abilities.
Steve viewed it as a trick. An, admittedly, cool ability that he was basically using it as a...romantic aid and not a lot more. The best comic book analogy to him would probably be Booster Gold.
Matt looked at it as an ability with great potential (both good and bad). He simply hadn't taken the morality of it much beyond the morality of the moment though. "Jeeze, we hurt someone, we shouldn't do that". It was a dirty little secret to him. The best comic book analogy to him would be a young Clark Kent when his powers first manifested.
For Andrew, on the other hand, it was transformative. He finally was given the ability to fight back, as he saw it. But for people who've been beaten and downtrodden like that, the idea of "proportionate retribution" just doesn't enter the picture. And because of his upbringing (or lack of), there were no more than rudimentary moral compunctions in place to stop him from letting his id run wild. He's unhappy and repentant because any sort of "acting out" was usually a prelude to a beating. But, because he's so caught up in his own misery, and because his punishments have been so inappropriately common, he has no real moral framework. Just a flimsy simulacrum that keeps him from being beaten constantly.
When it finally, completely, clicks that NOBODY can do that to him anymore if he doesn't want it to happen, and that he has formidible "weapons" in place to enforce his will, he goes on a power trip.
As I said, you may not LIKE the characterization, but IMNSHO, it's dead on and the most realistic of the three. -

Quote:You're usually better off converting to Alignment Merits.Unfortunately, the minimum any set recipe costs is 50 merits. So, with around 90 slots to fill, you're looking at at least a 4500 merit cost to make a full build.
Then spending out AMs either directly for the recipes you want or burning a couple for valuable ones you can sell on the market and using the Inf to buy the stuff you want. -
Because we're all a bunch of deviants at heart?

Quote:Congrats.I finally got my first ever level 50 scrapper.
Titanothere is my TW/Inv scrapper and I have to say I have really enjoyed getting him there - which is strange because as some of you may have noted I'm not really a melee player. He's only my third ever melee toon to get to the max and he's already gotten much further ahead than one.
One of the odd things about him is the fact he's TW. I don't even know why I bought the set, it was a moment of whim but I have to say I've really enjoyed it. It's rapidly becoming one of my favourite sets in the game but it does need a giant cricket bat weapon please (looking at you Noble Savage!
) But credit to the Devs for something that hooked me from the start, against all my expectations.
Now I just want tob e able to play TW and Trick Arrow on the same toon
Thanks to everyone for advice and guidance and also to the chaps on Defiant who've helped him get there

One dumb question. Why go with Scirocco's Dervish instead of Eradications?
Sure, Erad gives lower overall enhancement than Dervish, but the set bonuses are nearly double for both AoE and Ranged.
Additionally, for Focused Accuracy, while 2 EndReds are nice, wouldn't two Cytoskeleton Hami-Os be almost as good for EndRedux while providing more +ToHit? -
Quote:Most of the build suppliers should be able to tell you exactly why a certain IO is where it is, if it isn't already fairly self-evident.I don't mean to sound dismissive here, but if I am physically incapable of working with something when I don't comprehend what I'm doing on at least a fairly decent level. Whenever I see a build, for instance, my instincts are to point to an enhancement and ask "Why is this here?" Not as a challenge to whoever made the build, either, but just because I can't operate unless I know the "why" of the matter.
The thing is, min-maxing builds for specific purposes is a mini-game all by itself. And, like the costume creator, is highly variable and nuanced. There isn't any "One True Way". But lots of ways to accomplish similar things for varying purposes.Quote:My attempt here is to get just a basic, bottom line understanding of what the hell I'm doing here and why I'm doing it, set some baseline goals and see what it takes to achieve them.
*edit*
See, this is also something I hope to try and avoid. One of the things I like most about City of Heroes is that I can sit down and play it without worrying about whether I'm playing it the "right" way. I like to run story arc missions as much as I can, and it's what I find entertaining. If it transpires that I HAVE to farm for INF or Merits and that I can't play the story arc I want right now since it doesn't drop the right kind of currency and I have to go grind Architect missions, instead, that would be... Depressing. And would serve to make the game a lot less fun. -

My buddies running the BattleTech pods should be there again this year. The last two years have been pretty good to them. -

Quote:I can't find Arcanaville's lovely post on the "delete cookies" messages, but I've noticed a thing.
As we're all aware, the forums randomly instruct browsers to delete all cookies, such that if you are active on the forums for a few hours, you will likely be logged out several times.
Well, I've been less active, and I've noticed a thing:
1. All of my cookies have an expected duration of "until next year" or at least a few months out.
2. With perfect reliability so far, if I haven't used the forums for a day or two, and I come back, I'm logged out.
Hypothesis: Rather than telling vB to generate shorter login cookies, someone cleverly did something to attempt to implement session timeouts by flagging start times and deleting "old" sessions. It has a finite cache. If your session gets flushed from the cache, that also makes you get a delete-cookies request, because you're presumed to be "old".
In any event, I think the completely consistent logouts given longer time intervals probably mean something.
From word of Zwill, the forums are set with something like an 8-hour session time. After that, you have to log in again. -
Beacon for the RWZ: Yes. But you'll need to partake (or crash) at least one Rikti Mothership raid to get the final exploration badge (it's in the bowl of the mothership).
Beacon for Cimerora: Nope
Hacked Telepads: An upcoming (Issue 22) addition to the base builder's arsenal.
At least currently, they look identical to regular telepads, and are constructed with the same components. Energy and Control consumption are currently identical to regular telepads.
They have a slightly higher Prestige cost. But, considering the fact that you use fewer of them, will ultimately realize you a savings of prestige). -
Quote:You may want to look at going directly to iBuyPower and configuring up a similar rig.Well I just found my gaming rig http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...7322&Tpk=560ti
With the specials this weekend, you could realize a slightly more powerful machine.
Going with the z68 configurator:
- i5 2500K
- 8GB RAM (4GB x2, the one you spec'ed likely has a cheaper 2x4 config, meaning future memory upgrades are going to be more expensive)
- GTX 560Ti 2GB card (Superbowl deal)
- 1TB HD
- Win7 Home
Yes, the price is a little higher.
In my not-so-humble opinion, it's worth a $42 premium. -
And when they catch you, you get a nice cozy cell, three square a day and all the butt-sex you can handle...

Quote:Keep in mind that I am by no means a technical person- I do art, not computers. Yesterday, My game strted crashing- several times in a row, giving all kinds of error messages, including corrupt file messages. I gave it a rest and played for several hours today, no problem. And then it crashed again. and kept crashing. It crashed when I changed zones, and then when I tried to log into a character, and now, I can't even reach the login screen before crashing. I have uninstalled and reinstall the drivers. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game. It changes nothing.
I'll give as much data as I can, but something has broken, but I don't know what.
Have you tried just starting up the launcher itself?
Run the launcher, right-click on City of Heroes and select "Repair".
See if that helps.
Also, are you loading CoH by itself? Or through Steam? -

Just for the heck of it, I set the city of heroes setting in the nvidia profiles to "force single-gpu" and went to 35-40 fps. This is with ultra, 8xFSAA, and details set to 200%/200%. Same settings with SLI on (using default which is force alternate frame rendering 2, or the force alternate frame rendering 1), both produce ~9-10 fps.
So I'm not surprised at what you saw.
If you're building a machine primarily for CoH, just get the single fastest card you can. SLI is a waste of money.
If you're building SLI with other games in mind, just resign yourself to the fact that CoH is only going to use one card. -
The 520 is a very entry-level card.
It'll run the game. But I'd stay way the hell away from any ultra mode effects. -
Quote:I can pretty much guarantee that if I plunk a few tens of millions down, they'll be quite polite and stoic whilst I'm in the room, take my money, then wait until I'm out of the building before laughing at what a ******* I am.You'll recall that they never said anything about not laughing in your face while they listened.

Then, when my paid-for expansion comes out, I'd be the one laughing.
