  1. Okay, my opinions on the sick little "Raid Your Brains Out" culture that's sprung up since the inception of BAF/Lambda have been made abundantly clear, multiple times prior to this.

    That being said.

Getting ticked at someone for bringing a flat 50 to a BAF/Lambda?
    Uh, WHAT?

That's what those two trials are FOR.

Even Keyes, as it stands now, doesn't really require a level shift.

As for the rest? Yeah, I can see not wanting to go into a DoD with straight 50's.
    Or an Underground.
I also wouldn't want to have to run a MoM without sufficient anti-mez.
The TPN is "iffy", but the TPN is a mess of a trial anyhow.

A lot of it falls to having an active raid leader who pays attention to league balance.
I took an unshifted new Blaster on TPN with an excellent leader who knew what he was doing and was so heavily buffed that I had no problem hitting and killing stuff. So I contributed.

And while I'll alt if asked, I usually bring the toon I feel like playing on.

I'm so completely sick of raids that I only do them once in a blue moon. I don't give a damn HOW lucrative they are. So if whatever I'm bringing, when the mood strikes, isn't good enough and I'm not inclined to alt? Especially if it's someone talking out their [PANCAKE] about the new iteration of "We gotsta haz a h3@l0r!"

    Frak that noise.

    I'll go do something else.

So I was thinking maybe I could run both accounts at once, and power level that character up to level 20 by having it team with a toon on my main account, so the merits would be worth something.

Anyway, I can't figure out a good way to make both accounts run simultaneously on the same computer. Maybe that's not supposed to be possible. However it would help me a lot.

    USB Port Problem

Now the question becomes whether I buy a whole new computer, or just get a new motherboard. But if the board is that out of date, and I'm going to need other new components to go along with it, is it just time to bite the bullet and buy a new computer?

I might be able to wrangle up about a grand for it if I needed to, and I'd love an option that gets me up and running before this weekend, but I'll do what I need to do.

Edit-> On the bright side, I can now take a high-res picture of any component you want to see from my comp, since they're spread out on my kitchen table right now.
If you can put a grand out, I'd recommend going new system. That said, you may want to do a quick-shop at your local outlets.
The advice below is taking for granted you don't mind building.

If you order tomorrow morning, you could get your stuff on rush shipping on Friday morning. Use the guides here on the forums for moving your CoH install. You can have a bare and spare Windows install with all the patches in a couple hours.

You can also save some cash (or get a slightly beefier system) by transplanting some of the stuff you have now (CD/DVD, HD, etc).

If you REALLY are in Tyson's Corner, VA, DEFINITELY go to the local MicroCenter for your processor!

    They have the i5 2500K for $180.
    Newegg price is $220!

The board I'm recommending is $125 on Newegg and $120 at MicroCenter.

Granted, there's tax. But look at it as the "rush shipping" charge.

Going to give you as much stuff from MicroCenter as I can. This way it's one-stop shopping. In, out, and you can have a system up in a day or so.

    Motherboard
    CPU
With the rush, I want stuff guaranteed compatible.
Not a big fan of memory with LEDs on it but this stuff is compatible.
    From Newegg
    From Crucial directly

These from MicroCenter should work as well. You're paying less for lower CAS rating and making up a little of the difference in tax.

    Case Suggestion

    Cheaper Case Suggestion

    PSU

    CPU Cooler

If for some reason your old hard drive isn't SATA

If for some reason your old optical isn't SATA

Right there that has you at $825.

You could carry your current video card over from the old system (This close to nVidia's new release? I would! Prices on current items are going to drop as soon as they hit the shelves.)

If you're NOT running Win7, I'd recommend it at this time.

Windows 7 Home Premium Make sure you get the 64-bit version!

Now, if you know someone who goes to college, I by no means recommend that you see about purchasing an Educational Copy of Win7 Pro 64-bit through them for $70!

Okay, in one stop you can get a more or less complete system

    Case, PSU
    CPU, Cooler
    Motherboard, Memory
    HDD, CD/DVD
    OS

Factoring in a 10% sales tax, you'll walk out of MicroCenter lighter by about $950

If your HD/Optical are already SATA, carve off $170
If you're already sporting a copy of Win7 64-bit, carve off another $110
Also, there's a couple of small mail-in rebates to be had to bring the final price down some. You just have to wait for that money.

If the above two cases are true, you're all set for a HELLACIOUS upgrade to your video card later this month. As I said, if your graphics are "acceptable" right now, go with it. The new system will help stabilize them at higher levels since they'll be able to keep the GPU under full utilization at all times.

If you DO mind building, you already know what your range is:

Here's what Microcenter should have on hand

Or, if you have a hardware geek friend who's not afraid of building, spend that leftover $50 on pizza and beer (or soda, depending on age/preference) and ask him to build it for ya.
  4. Well, I hit L50 tonight on Brownian Cessation (Ice/Ice BABY!)

He was a tank I started over on Protector and got to 30 before I stopped playing him.

Then I started participating in TT.
Considering I had a plethora of tanks on Pro already, I put BC on a bus to the Justice Universe and he's never looked back.

First tank I dinged 50 on during TT. Won't be the last by a long shot. Have a couple more that are getting closer.

Well, you COULD try getting an identical board (though if you're Ver1 and it's Ver2 you may run into issues just booting Windows. Also, those boards are out-of-date enough that you're going to have problems finding them.

If you're up for doing a fast-n-clean Windows reinstall in time for DXPW,

    Asus Option

    Gigabyte Option

Also, both those boards come with legacy PS2 connectors as well, just in case.

Just spoke with a friend at Gigabyte. You can try reinstalling the drivers, but he's kinda sure the ports are fried or on their way to it.

  11. Basically as long as you have a mission-holder (Read, someone who's 50+ and gone through the DA intro arc) ANYONE can participate in the DA arcs. You just can't do the final mission after the arc completes. Those are solo-only, like the Matt Habashy mission where you become a hellion/hellion girlfriend from hell.

    Basically it's something like:

    • Arc Mission 1
    • Arc Mission 2
    • Arc Mission 3
    • Arc Mission 4 (Complete and get new contact)
    • Extra mission.
Drowning in Blood can be done by anyone over 15.

The repeatable missions in DA can be done just like Tip/Radio/Paper missions.

The DA intro mission has to be done solo.
But anyone can get into DA via the portal by the Arena.
I took an L33 Fire/Rad through for the beacon badges on a Magic Carpet ride.
They won't get any Incarnate drops. but they should get XP and regular salvage.
Also, I think the "personal" missions for each of the contacts is solo-only as well.
Luckily they aren't REQUIRED to finish an arc. They're only there for badges.

So, on my main computer, I've run into a problem. The computer seems to have stopped liking the USB host controllers or the jacks. Which is absolutely fantastic, since my mouse and keyboard are usb-dependent. I was able to find a usb -> ps2 port converter for my mouse, but I can't really google or type anything, which makes it tough to search for help on that computer. So, I highjacked my fiance's compt to ask for help. I say this because I can't give you many details on the other computer or post the typical reports that might help you to help me diagnose the problem.

    System:

Self-built, running Windows XP SP3. Can't remember the motherboard type or processors.

    Now, what the problem is:

    The USB ports aren't recognized
The computer says there was a malfunction, and that the drives aren't recognized
It gives me a little pop-up to click to fix it, but it's the window's troubleshooter, and therefore fairly useless.
Nothing plugged into the drives work, or even shows that it's getting power.

What I've done to try to fix it:

    1) Run the Windows troubleshooter, and perform all the fixes it suggests
    2) Uninstall the USB Host Controllers, reboot the computer a few times to have the re-install
    3) Run Windows Updater
    4) Download new drivers, but tough to do, since I can't type in the model numbers, and I don't want to pay for a driver finder (not like I could put in any info anyways)

So what's next? Are they just dead, and I need to get new parts? Is there something I can do while only having a mouse to do it?

Thanks. I'll try to get anyone more info if I can, but I can't post from that computer.

Can you get a good high-res pic of your motherboard?
Or a couple of them, of different parts of the board?
If so, we should be able to figure out who made the board and where to go to find working drivers.

    Mea culpa guys.

My fire/rad group was in the process of hitting DA tonight with the intent of leaving a smoking, self-illuminating crater.

This prospect caused Mot to lose bowel and bladder control, blowing down several servers.

Shortly afterwards the rest went down as he proceeded to dig himself a hidey-hole and pulled everything in after him.

Being this hideously powerful has some perks. Sure! But there are times...

    Grrr...

Apparently Mot got the **** scared out of him when he heard my Fire/Rad group was hitting DA tonight.

He dug himself a hole and proceeded to start pulling servers in after him.
He eventually got the mapserver too.

Damn, it's nice that we're powerful enough to make evil death gods crap themselves, but this just ruined my evening!
  21. Apparently Mot was scared about the boasting my Fire/Rad group was doing.

He dug himself a hole and pulled about 4 servers in after him.

Evidently he then pulled the mapserver in too. I can't log in on any server now.

Damn, being powerful enough to scare the crap out of evil death gods SUCKS!

Compared to the broad swath of content that came before. Yeah. It is.
Essentially the game funneled down into one thing if you wanted to advance your character.

    Raid Your Brains Out

The introduction of DA does little to change this.
It introduces a painfully slow "alternative" that STILL ties you to the "Well if you get lucky with random rolls you can make progress, if not tough ****" mechanic. And your only deterministic option is to STILL build everything raw from threads and continual up-conversion of salvage.

    Please note my enthusiasm.

A disappointing but extremely necessary point to make the movie work were the changes to the villains, Carter's transportation to Mars, and even Carter's backstory. I can't imagine a film audience, or even a literary audience, for that matter, accepting these things in the form Burroughs wrote them originally (villains as almost unnoticeable characters, totally unexplained, and being a mysteriously ageless soldier, respectively, for those who don't know the novels). Story conventions have just changed too much over the past century. I was disappointed to lose the original version here, but I thought the changes were handled well.
Agreed. While the whole ubermensch theme running through much of Burroughs' works had to be toned down. I think that's partially what was behind the whole dialog between Matai Shang and Carter (the line about the transfer process not really making him any smarter).

    Quote:
On the last point, (the literary) Carter's unexplained agelessness, my personal pet theory has always been that Carter is, in fact, the basis for the legends of the god Mars himself. Burroughs never gives any hint of having even thought of this, let alone written it into a story, but I still enjoy the idea. What do you think?
Honestly I don't remember enough of the novels. I got through the first and the second. But Burroughs' style has always been somewhat painful to read.
