Actually, if you're going with one of the self-contained solutions (like the Corsair H line), I'd say "It's an option". Especially since it's generally quieter than stock HSFs and takes up less space around the CPU socket than decent air coolers.

Quote:Well, every few years you want to renew your thermal interface material on the chip. What can you tell me about liquid cooling, what maintenance is needed, do I have to change the "Oil" every 3 trillion MB's?

But a lot of the self-contained cooling systems you pretty much never have to change anything with them.
If you're looking for sites that have "build it" matrixes, try iBuyPower.com and CyberPowerPC. Maybe Falcon Northwest (just be warned, Falcon is one of the "pricey" custom-builders). -
First off:

Quote:Unless you're moving around a lot and playing CoH from lots of locations, I recommend you stick with a desktop system. They're your most powerful option for gaming. They're also a better bang for the buck than "gaming laptops.Hello everyone:
Im looking for some down low on a new high end gaming computer for this and other games coming down the line.
First off Im leaning towards a PC desk top, but Im still tossing around the idea of a Mac, so thoughts on PC Vs. Mac?
Also, Macs are NOT gaming laptops. You can play some games on there, but your best option is a Wintendo setup.
Well, some of this HEAVILY depends on your budget.Quote:What do you consider the best video card?
Something like the Dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 or the Dual ATI Radeon HD 6870 CrossfireX or is there something else out there?
You could drop $500 for a brand new GTX 680 or a Radeon 7970. But you want to make sure it makes sense for your budget.
Honestly, I recommend going with nVidia for your card. Currently it has fewer issues in CoH in general.
I'd recommend a minimum of 8. If you want to go higher, and your budget allows for it, knock yourself out.Quote:How much RAM should I be looking at? It seems most gaming rigs come with between 8GB and 16GB with expansion slots.
Raw clock speed is the worst identifier for gaming prowess.Quote:Processors and processor speeds? Should I be looking for a 4 core or a 6 core? Is 3.3GHz good or should I be shooting for a 4.0GHz over clocked liquid cooled processor?
Currently the most economical chip for gaming is the i5 2500K.
If you want something beefier multi-threaded, you could step up to the i7 2600K.
If you want the "latest and greatest", possibly the i7 3820.
Do you need a monitor? Need to buy the OS too? Recyling anything?Quote:Lastly, price, Im looking to spend between $1,000 to $2,000 roughly.
Looking to buy or build?Quote:If you can link some good sites or some rig specs that would be great.
Alienware machines are overpriced entry-level gaming machines. You're paying for a "famous" name on a Dell computer. Don't buy from them. PERIOD.Quote:One final question, looking at some specs out there Alien Wear seems to be top of the line, but coming in at $3,000 to $4,000 they seem a little pricy for a rig thats only a little better them the other rigs out there that run less than $2,000. Are they worth the price or are you just buying bright lights and a name brand? -

Why is it that every property that some Hollywood schmuck doesn't know what to do with is turned into a comedy?
Why?
Why why why why!?!?
I'm going to go take some steel wool to my eyes now. -
Too much stuff excised, and things like your CheckPoint VPN software? C'mon.
Hit up Customer Support for assistance please. -
Incorrect.
Reread what I said about multi-purpose and multi-platform.
Moreover, OGL is directly extensible by people other than the controlling body.
DX isn't, it's a black-box. You take the feature set you're given and work around any limitations.
DirectX is a set of multimedia APIs that includes Direct3D, DirectSound, etc, etc. It's primarily oriented toward gaming.
Not sure who told you AMD was "focusing on OGL".Quote:The sad fact is that OpenGL seems to get less support and new tricks developed for it by companies like Nvidia, and companies that supposedly focus on OpenGL are plagued by driver issues(AMD).
Pretty sure whoever it was lied. -
Quote:You may be having "environmental" issues in that install (as in something in Windows is broke).I got fed up. I tried various methods for installing the new drivers, and they didn't work, so I got a better power supply and a GeForce 560 graphics card.
It still crashes.
I don't think the graphics card is the problem.
I've done a bit more testing on the nature of the crash; it always crashes some time during the second mission since I logged in to that character. Logging out to character screen or login screen and then logging back in to the same character doesn't help. Having the second mission in a different zone from the first doesn't help. If I only do one mission, I can stay on indefinitely without crash as far as I can tell (I spent a while editing costumes, crafting IOs, and selling/buying on the market without problems, until I tried a second mission, which caused a crash). I'm going to see if switching off between two characters (doing one mission with one, switching to another, then switching back) will prevent the crash, but I'm not too hopeful. This whole thing is pretty crazy. Is anyone else having this problem?
Especially if those AMD/ATI drivers were "sticking" in the system registry.
If you have already bought an nVidia card, take the above advice and grab yourself a driver cleaner program and purge any ATI graphics stuff from your system. -
Quote:Mon pleasure, new community manager!
and note to all, I made a twitter account for the goat-
@n3therg0at
is there a thread somewhere collecting the twitter handles of forumgoers?
I tracked down a few people with their search function, but it was sorta slim pickin's.
So would you get ticked if someone referred to you by the diminuative "goatsy"?

Was able to Google up a shot of Sharkskin:

Quote:The thing is, OpenGL is a multi-purpose, multi-platform tool. It's sad about OpenGL as well.
I would love to see a challenger to Windows(because it's bloated and tries to do too much now), and DirectX is a Microsoft thing so Windows is apparently always going to be the gaming choice so long as OpenGL can't do the job as good and no other competing graphics software comes out.
That's like griping about your Swiss Army knife because the scissors on it aren't as good as a pair of Fiskars or a set of tin snips. -
Here's Scorpion Shield (you can't really see the purple Scorpion Claw glyph. It's only really visible when you first fire off the power. Afterwards there's a purple glow about you. You can actually see the scorpion claw glyph in this pic. It's hovering over her chest (just ignore the boobs). Due to the darkness of the image, you have to look close at the full sized version.

Click on the above image for a full-size (1920x1080) version. -
Quote:That, in and of itself is worrisome.the text file for the coh helper log is too big, even when split in two. id have to segment it some other time.
As I've said, there's a marked difference between how DirectX games and OpenGL games will run on an Intel graphics chipset.Quote:intel chips have been standard in laptops lately and the quality of the dedicated cards in notebooks has been tanking. Ive run some high end games that my older pc wont run (deus ex 3 comes to mind). the old desktop runs coh better, though. (at 1280x768 resolution)
Simply because *Insert DirectX Title Here* runs fine has next to nothing to do with how well CoH will run. -
-
Unfortunately, integrated Intel video is good for displaying your desktop and not a hell of a lot more.
It's not so much that it doesn't have the raw power to do so.
It's just that the Intel video has absolutely atrocious (with a capital ATROCIOUS) OpenGL support. Moreover, OGL stresses video cards quite differently than DirectX does.
You can try upgrading your video drivers to the latest Intel drivers. But that's no guarantee that it'll fix it. And as you're on a laptop, telling you to get another graphics card is a severe no-go.
If you can try again to provide the info requested in this thread, it'd probably help.

Also, when was the last time you shut down and blasted the dust out of the machine? -
