Quote:The problem is, the GMOTD doesn't "pop" reliably. As long as it was used sparingly (i.e., not updated hourly since it pops up and, in general, pop ups are evil
), may I suggest using the GMOTD that gets updated on Tuesdays with the current and next few weeks' worth of WSTs and Market releases.
Sometimes, it'll pop when I log on. Sometimes, it'll pop when I zone the first time. Sometimes, it just never does. -

Quote:Let's just say it's a value judgement, based on play style.
Inv/SS is nice, but I'd hardly call it self-sufficient
I wouldn't call something that has no innate defense and has to rely entirely on set bonuses and pool powers to get any "self-sufficient" either.Quote:Elec/SS is more like it. -
My vote is for Inv/SS.
A nice, self-sufficient set that can be made RIDICULOUSLY tough. -
I use a tool called "Camtasia" to put my vids together. It's mainly meant as a post-production tool for turning presentations into videos. But it works if you have video source too.
Note: If you want to get high-def, record at 1280x720. That's really the max resolution Youtube will accept.
I don't recommend using any tools that allow for half-resolution capture while playing at higher resolutions. You lose too much video quality in the final conversion process.
As for the general style of the vid? It was fine.
Also, what is this 3GB limit? Max for how much iMovie will handle in a given project? -
Stuff like this is almost as frustrating as the stupid "???" objectives in some of the new DA arcs.
Why give people an objective and not tell them what it is? -
For future reference, push the data chunk too.
The data link doesn't survive edits to the post or even previews. -
Quote:Driver rev? What is that? Remember...talking to a computer illiterate here ;O).
Appreciate your insight! Going to go ahead and order it once you let me know what this "driver rev" is and how I can get it...
Short for "driver revision". A way of saying "which version of the video card drivers will work best in your particular setup. For ATI, "newest" is not always "best". -
Another thing that's REALLY aggravating is that some powers (like Spring Attack) don't work in there either.
-
Reminds me of a AFD joke pulled on the BattleTech and Shadowrun communities a few years back.
Then we wound up turning it into a "real" product.

Quote:The $799 looks like a decent setup. He brought up some pages of CPUs that were a GREAT price, but I wanted to make sure these would work with you guys...here's a link to the four he recommended. It's not an "I get more FPS that GOD!" box, but it's likely a very decent upgrade from whatever you had.
About the only downer I see is the ATI video. Say what you want, ATI is still flakier in OGL apps than nVidia is. But if you can find a decent driver rev, you should be okay.
I don't see the info on the system's motherboard nor the installed memory loadout (2x4GB of RAM or 4x2GB of RAM). So it's hard to tell.Quote:And a last question...I couldn't find the info on their site, but would I be able to upgrade the 8gigs of memory to 16? (again, focusing on the $799 iBuyPower model). The 2 year warranty also is a nice piece of mind.
Appreciate any insight.
You SHOULD be able to put at least 16GB of RAM in any of these machines though. You may have to simply yank whatever's in there and buy the full 16GB separately. -

On the free-play tiers (anyone not subbing), you need to be at Tier7 on your Paragon Rewards, or buying an invention license every month to use IOs.
On the flip-side, you have access to a second build that you can outfit for SO/HO if you want. -
Quote:Doctor in the hospital: Holy god! What the heck happened to YOU?If I ever became a dev, I don't see what the point of being called anything other than "Arcanaville" would be, because it seems unlikely that could be kept a secret for very long.
On the other hand, if they let me design my own signature character... let's just say there's a lot about the powers system players would learn is possible when I started showing up in Pocket D and stomping on everything in sight.
Hyperstrike: Got gnawed on by a Three.
Doctor: Huh?
Hyperstrike: The guys who went after the Nines weren't so lucky...
Doctor: Oh. You tried taking on Arcana again didn't you?
Hyperstrike: (Sheepish) Yeah...
Doctor: DUMB***!!!
Hyperstrike: No arguments there doc. -
Quote:The thing is, they DID get a product in their language. They thought they were getting a game that would be in their language, and now it won't be.
Baited by the initial product, switched to a less useful product, thus making it over-priced for what they get. Yeah, I know what bait and switch means. Is it spot on? Maybe not. But the spirit of it is there.
Support is now being deprecated for that language.
The game itself remains available and allows the player to determine whether or not to keep participating (and/or paying).
That's NOT bait and switch.
This is like griping that you can't go to a Chrysler dealership and buy a brand new 1990 Dodge Shadow today.
Actually Zwill has already spoken to the "close the servers" issue. The virtualized manner in which the servers are hosted means that keeping any given server shard going is negligible.Quote:I still think that the decision is a bad one. Not because it might help those servers get more people, and not because it gives me another couple of english servers to play on, but because it shows that if servers are not populated enough, this company might pull the plug on them at any time and as a player, the only recourse I would have would be to adapt or quit.
For the language support, they'd either have to pull some existing people completely off their real jobs or hire multiple new people for each supported language. At least one to do community moderation and one to do translation for game data. And these people are NOT going to want to work for free or with no benefits.
Even if you paid these people the craptastic wage of $30K a year (which is below poverty level in Paragon's neck of the woods), you're still looking at over a hundred grand a year in salary and benefits. Are the non-english servers bringing in this much in revenue?
Before you jump on me as a dev apologist, understand this. I, too, think this is a bad, rotten precedent. On the flip side, I can understand it completely, even though I don't like it. -
The response on the German thread has been fairly overwhelming.
It's as if a billion voices cried out...
Okay, maybe a couple hundred thousand...
Okay, maybe a couple hundred...
Maybe a couple dozen?
A dozen?
A few?
A couple?
At least one?
Nah, it's been pretty much silence...
Granted, this hit the servers at around 8PM their time. -
Quote:Sadly, no.
This decision brings no joy to anyone within the Paragon Studios team. We have long been proud of our ability to offer CoH in both French and German. Unfortunately we have reached a point where supporting the costs associated with localizing all of the game files, all marketing materials and all Community content was unsustainable.
Going by some of the truly blatant errors in the last SSA mission, it looks like you're even having trouble localizing for English...

It's now official. These servers have GONE TO THE AMERICANS!
Oh Unique Dragon, you pithy seer you! -
Quote:A workaround is better than what we've got now, lol.
I don't expect they're ever going to rewrite the AI to where it does anything spectacular. Also, I'd want them to fix the Stay command, since that's also quite borked (they don't stay in any meaningful sense of the word "stay")
Exactly. They stop for a couple seconds in acknowledgement, then the AI overrides the command and they go charging away. -
Quote:I'm literally drooling over here. My Alienware that I purchased in around 2005 was "top of the line" or so I THOUGHT at the time. After a long absence from the game, I've recently returned (that Alienware wasn't even turned on for all those years...I literally only use it for COH...use laptop for surfing/email/etc) to find that my little 3 Gigs of memory don't seem to cut it anymore. Had to turn settings WAAAAAYYY down from what they were before my absence so that now I feel like I'm playing, as someone described earlier, with stick figures and such.
I want to thank the OP for this thread, because I was just about to post something similar. I have the same price range and I'm in the market as well.
What really made me want to post, though, was all these AMAZING looking "rigs" and parts and pieces!! I will NEVER forget the day my Alienware arrived...(keep in mind I was playing on something equivalent to a Commodore 64 up until my gaming Alienware arrived) ...I logged in, and WHAM...I could NOT BELIEVE how real, alive, vibrant, clear, SHOCKINGLY AMAZING the game looked through my massive flat screen and new computer. I could dual box with ease, and did so often. Trials, TFs, Hamis, etc all EFFORTLESS. Now, trials lag me badly and dual boxing causes way too much choppiness and sound looping/issues. I want the old days back pretty badly.
But, you see, I'm a guy who knows NOTHING about that stuff. I mean literally not a thing. Overclocking? 32bits? Processor? All of that is as clear to me as a foreign language. Which is why, 7 years ago, I bought from Alienware. Guess I'd rather pay the little extra (or a lot extra) to have it DONE...I plug it in and play. Now, in hindsight, if I had gone a different route I probably would be able to upgrade and have all that joy back, but have been told that my memory is at the max. Sigh.
Can you guys offer some words of advice for guys like me who are in a similar situation as the OP, but differently, we have no technical background or expertise. We are the ones Alienware and other companies make their money from because it's easier to just give them the money and be done with it. Let's say I have $2000...where do I go from here? Are there people such as @Hyperstrike above who will use our money to build the best BEST possible gaming rig in return for a fee? If so, HOW do you find them?
I'm just a teacher...I work all day...but I LOVE this game and I want to experience it the BEST possible way. I don't, however, have the knowledge necessary to put something like this together. Is this a case of "it's not what you know it's who you know"?
Thanks again, OP, for posting this. It's been great to see all the responses from the point of view of someone who is in a similar position.
If anyone has tips for me and would like to share in-game, globals are @Clever One and @Justice29. (on @Clever One mostly these days)
Okay, if you have the cash, but haven't got the desire or technical backing to build for yourself, two of the "enthusiast" builders I'd recommend (having seen and worked on their products) are CyberPowerPC and iBuyPower.
As for who here would do a build for you. As I stated in the thread I'm working up for a build I'm doing currently, I honestly don't know. I know several of the tech-heads here. But not who does or doesn't go into system building.
Moreover, it's very hard for people to put it out that they do. Forum rules specifically prohibit people offering goods or services for sale for real money on the forums.
Also, I don't do a lot of system building for people. The building of systems is relatively straightforward. It's the ongoing support issues that are something I'm not able to deal with. This person was kinda in a bind, I had the opening in my schedule, and they're technically savvy enough to support themselves (plus they picked the components already). So my input is limited to basic assembly and asking a few questions about layout choices.
Basically from CyberPower I can put together a Z68 based system with i5 2550K, 8GB of RAM, a GTX 680, 120GB SSD with a 2GB HD data drive, 24" monitor and OS, shipped in a 2 week time frame for about $1950 shipped.
iBP can deliver a nearly identical system for a bit more than that.
Both of them will suck the doors off an Alienware rig. -
