Quote:Two words (well, two more): PLOT ARMORAs cute as this scenario is I'd just have to ask why the vampires haven't ever tried to do this.
And guys, I don't care how great you think Buffy is. NOBODY dodges a supersonic round fired from a mile or more out. They're not faster than sound and their head winds up like a watermelon at a Gallagher show before a single sound is heard. -
-
I've got nothin'...
Unless someone else has experience with this, you may need to put a call in to customer support. -
Buffy: So where's this...
*HEADSHOT!*
Natasha: Target neutralized sir. -
My setup's a bit more exotic.
I have a server rack set up behind my desk with all my network equipment bolted onto it.
Plus a shelf to set my computer on and get it up off the floor. This way my desk remains free for whatever other clutter I accumulate.
And when I need to put a DVD/Blu-Ray/CD in, I just reach through my monitor area.
The phone's a VOIP system tied back to my office at work.
Across from it in the opposite bay are my webcam and my NAS.
Right next to my desk is my TV and Blu-Ray unit.
This setup isn't totally convenient. But it's relatively clean and easy to maintain. -
Quote:The devs have said that, at its height, about 10% of the population had entered a PVP zone.ROFL! What next? Are you going to argue that redside has more players than Blueside?
Anyone that's honest knows that PvP was never popular with more than a fraction of the player base and base raid popularity was only a fraction of the PvP population.
Not that they were PVP players or anything. Just that they'd entered the zones and used the arena.
I'd suspect that i13 put a major dent in these numbers. -

Quote:It's not just a function of raw wattage. This is a bit hardware technical for me, but does it mean the Silverstone 500W you referred to, has enough wattage? Just checked the wattage usage on the GTS 450 on tomshardware which states a maximum load of 219 Watt (though that is the 1Gb version, dont know if that matters). So changing the power supply and thereby adding 125 Watt more, would that be sufficient?
You need to make sure that you're getting sufficient amperage on a specific rail (the +12V rail).
You also need to make sure you have the appropriate connectors for your motherboard and hardware.
Additionally, it's not really a good idea to run a PSU at 80-100% load all the time. It shortens the life of the component drastically. So a little "head room" is desirable.
Quote:Okay, if I get this right, what you are saying is that this PSU would fit my computer, socket/connector wise, but not all PSU's does?
Motherboard power connectors (for most PCs) come in 3 flavors.
20 pin (older)
24 pin (newer)
20+4 pin (hybrid)
20 pin connectors will technically work on a 24 pin board, but you need to buy an adapter. And even then, you may run into issues if the PSU can't supply appropriate power for the board across all rails.
24 pin can work on a 20 pin board, but, again, you'd need an adapter.
20+4 can basically be fit to either.
Quote:I'm so sorry for what might seem like trivial/non-intelligent/right out stupid questions, but I just want to make sure that I buy the right stuff from start, and get a bit enlightened on the way (if possible ).
Or, if you know people doing carpentry. "Measure twice, cut once". -
Quote:The GTS 450 card requires a minimum of a 400W PSU with 22 amps on the +12V rail. Thanks for that. Two questions though, would the Silverstone PSU fit properly in my casing and is the 500 W enough for the 450 GS card?
The Silverstone delivers about 34 amps on the +12V rail.
It's a 20+4 model power connector on the main. This means there's a 20 pin connector (which is what your board uses), plus an additional 4 pin connector if the board required it.
This PSU may be a bit longer than the original PSU. So take some measurements and compare them against the dimensions on the Details tab here. But, from the diagram, it doesn't appear that you'll have any problem. There appears to be lots of space between the back end of your optical drive and your current PSU. -
Quote:I'll give the 0.2.1 a try later. I too had to pull out the original image because I was crashing on almost every zone.I just released 0.2.1 on the exe, and included the same fix on the website, try to generate a login screen, and see if you get the crash please.
**Edit**
Okay, two SECONDS later. But still.
0.2.2 seems to have cleared up my issue. -
Honestly, I've NEVER heard of Hantol prior to this post. As such I'd be VERY wary of buying. And the price of $40 for a supposed 720W PSU? Uh, no. I wouldn't put one of those in my system because I know I'd be swapping it out after it died in a couple weeks.
Maybe look at this one from Silverstone. A more reliable name.
The 450 should be a decent step up for you. It's going to run like a GTX 680 or anything but you should be able to do at least basic Ultra Mode at acceptable framerates. -

Okay, was having issues with my NoScript.
So Father scooped me. I pretty much agree with every syllable of his post. -
Quote:Actually that's false. Or at least it was false when I ran through.Gabriel will track arcs completed even if you don't have his mission, but he doesn't count arcs completed before he was added in.
I'd dithered with the DA arcs until he was put in the game. And hadn't completed it on anyone.
Yet when I picked him up the first time on my main, I was credited for all the arcs I'd completed previously.
Don't know if it works the same for farming via Oro. But I DO know I didn't have to rerun the arcs I did prior to Gabe's inception to get the 2 emps. Indeed, his presence has basically killed any arguments I had about the deterministic issues with the DA arcs. While still quite slow, at least it allows a diligent player to accumulate Emps for Rare and VR salvage at a steady pace that doesn't rely on an RNG. -
Quote:If you take your settings down to -1/x1, the last mission (the only one that's required to complete the arc) isn't too bad even if you're alone. However, if I'm remembering correctly, that arc doesn't give you a reward table at the end. Probably for exactly that reason.
So Heather is still probably your best bet.
Also, OP, don't forget about Taskmaster Gabriel. Two guaranteed Empyrian merits a week (plus the rewards for the individual arcs) isn't a bad deal when you're not doing trials, and it's a little less grindy than doing the same arc over and over again.
EDIT: Ninja'd! And also, make sure you do a repeatable mission every day. Those ten-thread rewards add up.
One thing you need to be careful of. If your powers have any sort of KB component at all, running at even level or less can result in enemies getting tossed around all over the place.
The first time I ran through the DA super-arc, I ran at +2x8. The only missions I had problems with were the last one in the first half of the Dream Doctor arc (after you get Audrey'ed and break free you have to fight several mobs of BP). The Sorrow-based BP nuked the crap out of my defenses on a capped Inv/SS tank. Made me feel positively squishy...
But all the "final missions", I had zero problems with.
Imagine my abject shock in failing the rescue at the end of Heather's arc at +0x1! All due to most of my attacks becoming Foe-Tossing Charges and the extra time incurred chasing them down. -
Quote:Correct. 17-20 second boot-ups from the time the BIOS hands off to the OS? Yes? PLEASE?If I did a SSD+HDD configuration, I would want the SSD to be the boot drive, presumably.
Fast application load time? Yes? PLEASE?
Improved CoH zone loads for the portions of the zone loads reliant on the local files?
Quote:You've given me some food for thought. Thanks again. -
If all you're using it for is CoH? Yeah. Overkill to the max.
If you plan on multi-boxing, doing video capture of various games or other memory-hungry applications, then the extra RAM can be very nice indeed.
Quote:2. Is a RAID setup preferable to a simple single SATA HDD setup?
HOWEVER, unlike other forms of RAID there is NO redundancy whatsoever.
If a drive dies, or desyncs from the array (happens more with consumer-grade hard drives), you lose EVERYTHING on the entire array. As such, it's NOT an ideal method of storing data you don't want to lose.
If you're really concerned with "faster", go single HD, buy yourself an SSD and a copy of Acronis True Image. Clone the system to the SSD and use the single hard drive for data storage. A single modern SSD will outperform a RAID-0 of hard drives for just about everything YOU are likely to use it for.
Quote:3. Am I asking for trouble regarding the ATI card? I know some folks prefer NVidia, and my current card is an NVidia card. Is this ATI card 'beefy' enough? Should I be looking at other options here?
As to the possibility of having more driver issues with ATI than nVidia. Unfortunately the answer is "yes" there too. Unfortunately, ATI and nVidia's product offerings don't line up neatly in terms of product equivalency.
Quote:4. What's the deal with this THX TruStudio sound? My last few computers have had a soundblaster card of some kind I think, but for this build I had no option but this TruStudio deal. What the heck is it, and should I be concerned about it? -
Quote:Maybe they did it just to tick YOU off specifically.2) I avoid the forums. I come here either when I am looking for possible work-arounds or to help others or when I have been seriously BLEEPED off by a particular "bug"(more like a "feature" at this point all too often) or the sheer volume of bugs they have let stay in this game or created almost intentionally.
It's a conspiracy man! A conspiracy I tell ya!

Quote:3) I don't care what excuse you or the developers give for the problems in the game, or how many times you try to blame my computer that works perfectly for everything other than City of Heroes.
Pfft.
Quote:This game is going to be offline permanently by this time next year if they do not fix most of the issues, because you all KNOW they will be adding more stuff that will break the game even more(because that is the only constant with patches).

Quote:They have different employees and Alienware is left to mostly run as they always did because "Dell wanted what Alienware does".
Try again.

Quote:I just defended my opinion about how I would like to use computers against comments that TRULY looked like "I just hate the way it looks, I want the old way I'm used to".
Quote:So clearly, the people who attacked my opinion, and I replied to, were "stuck in their ways" like the old man who doesn't want to use a simple cellphone because "I'm fine with my wired phone in my house instead of some newfangled doohickey that works exactly the same but I'm too stubborn to see the truth".
People attacked your opinion because you were attempting to pass said opinions off as fact.
Quote:I know, from experience, that a trackball mouse(laser of course) is superior to any other mouse, especially for gaming, but nobody ever makes them with enough extra buttons and certainly not well placed. It baffles me how this has not been made yet, despite the wide adoption of trackball mice in business and gaming, where carpal tunnel is common, areas that have a use for the quickly accessible buttons.
Thus rendering your blather about "superiority" hollow and self-serving. It's your opinion. Not a fact. Please stop pretending that they're one and the same.
Quote:FYI, touchscreen control is not "less ergonomic" than a keyboard and mouse, especially considering your argument of a "2 foot screen" is not what a touchscreen is intended for.
Intel just completed a study though that people still wanted their mouse and keyboards.
The problem with Win8 is that Microsoft didn't "augment" the Windows interface with touch capability. They tossed the old interface and a massive amount of work that went into it in favor of a touch-oriented setup. Never mind that the market for touch interface outside the mobile segment is tiny.
Quote:Anyway, I'll defend my opinions and you can just suck it up and take the rant because that is one of very few reasons I even look at the forums.
Okay! Now we know to just ignore you then. -
Quote:Not saying Dell doesn't give you a good deal for what they're selling you.Just for counterpoint purposes, my last three computers were Dells (two desktops, one laptop). My current desktop is pushing seven years in age and, while I am now seriously contemplating replacing it, it still functions perfectly well, and runs CoH just fine (I did upgrade to 6G RAM and a new video card about two years ago, for about $300). My most recent single-player game I've purchases is Deus Ex Human Revolution, and it runs fine as well.
On the occasions where I've needed customer support, they've been very responsive.
Not discounting Immortalus' experience at all. Like I said, just providing a counterpoint perspective from a very satisfied Dell user.
It's just that if you're looking for a very specific feature/performance profile, it's VERY hard to match it with the Dell matrices without paying through the nose and out the ***, if at all.
Quote:Dell is not a "premier manufacturer" like Alienware
Oh, and Immy doesn't seem to realize Alienware = Dell. -
Quote:Wow. Sorry you had such a lousy IBP experience. And sorry to have recommended them to you as such. For those still following this thread for its intended purpose, the computer I purchased (see above a few pages back) did arrive and the motherboard was cracked. LONG story short, I contacted iBuyPower through Costco's rep and after discussing the issue with them, I was completely dissatisfied and will never buy from that company again. I took the computer into costco and returned it and got the money put back on my credit card. (LOVE costco). I purchased an Alienware (which is the kind I have now and have never had a problem) through Costco for a GREAT price...$999 for those interested and it's better spec-wise than the iBuyPower one was, so I'm actually glad this happened.
Yes I realize there are cheaper options out there (building yourself etc) but when that's not possible for a person who is technologically illiterate, you have to put up more money to get it done for you.
I can't wait til it arrives!! The whole time I was waiting on the iBuyPower to arrive, I don't know quite why, I was nervous and worried. The anticipation for the Alienware is much different...just pure excitement. Guess because I know what I'm getting.
Happy gaming!
What issue "exactly" did IBP fall down and knock their brains out on?
Were they refusing a replacement? Or warranty service?
Or were they going to try and send you a motherboard and expect you do DIY?
Hoping your new system works well for you. -
Quote:Okay you've said something similar to this before. So, City of Heroes performs a hell of a lot worse than it should. Just look at World of Warcraft, which ALWAYS plays better than City of Heroes despite it being Blizzard's first MMO and Cryptic and NCSoft having made many more.
It was dumb and wrong then. Now, it still just as wrong, but even dumber for you having already been corrected.
You cannot compare WoW and CoH on performance.
They are two separate game engines that load down a system differently.
Trying to draw a direct comparison because the more graphically limited WoW performs better than CoH (which is far more customizable, resulting in a larger system footprint) is like saying that you have no problems in heavy traffic because you take your motorcycle down the shoulders while the other guy in the pickup truck hauling gear has to sit in traffic.
Quote:You would think "experienced developers" would have the better performing program, but that is definitely not the case with City of Heroes.
Quote:And no, you can't argue it was because of increased funds available, at least not before launch. Cryptic likely had more resources and making a program run as good as possible is essential to making as much money as possible.
The WoW engine is more graphically primitive than the CoH engine. By design. What's more, AFTER it became the 12,000 pound gorilla of the industry...well, throwing money at problems sometimes CAN work.
Assume for the sake of argument that Paragon Studios consists of a development team of roughly 30 people.
WoW can throw a team nearly that big at team solely focused on code optimization. Meanwhile you still have your REGULAR development teams churning their stuff out.
Quote:Contrary to popular belief, people don't need "experience as game developers" to know when the code of the game is a steaming pile of crap.
You don't know, therefore you assume. Based on nothing more than a vague sense of butt-hurt.
Quote:They just have to see the evidence in the visible output(i.e. the game doesn't play right).
There would not be all the bugs and inefficiencies if the game was properly coded, especially given its age.
This game was originally designed to play on a general patch-level of an OS that's been dead for more than a decade.
It's survived not one, but THREE major OS paradigm shifts. And countless OS patch levels. Not to mention hardware shifts, and driver revisions for various components. In addition, the basic API has seen at least two major revisions.
Not to mention 7 years of updates, additions, and massive revisions to the game code. To the point where, other then some superficialities, it's not even the same game anymore.
Think about it as a huge, four-dimensional jigsaw puzzle. The fact that it works as well as it does is a testament to the sheer amount of labor programmers of MANY types (not just Paragon) have put into the effort.
You're ranting about performance anomalies in YOUR environment. Which Paragon has precious little control over. And because YOUR setup is OBVIOUSLY infallibly powerful and stable, it MUST be shoddy coding on Paragon/Cryptic's part?
Pardon my polite laughter...
Well, you get the picture. -
Yes.
