Quote:Brilliant? MOI? COOL!The guy at the Player Summit asking about trading tokens between his two accounts made me realize that this idea is brilliant.
Quote:I was just shy of Tier 9 when Freedom launched, and after ten months worth of buying goodies, I have reward tokens coming out my eyeballs.
Let me give my excess tokens away. My fiancée would be giddy if she suddenly had Celestial Armor when logging in one day, and I'm sure there are plenty of people with multiple accounts who'd love the feature, too.
It could even be limited to T9 VIPs as another feature of the subscription, and as a method of preventing exploitative behavior with low-tier VIP Bundle accounts or other similar things being created for their tokens.
And what happens if someone gives someone thousands of points, changes their mind, then says "My account was raided! I want my points back!"
And, what do they do when someone's account IS "legitimately" raided for this?
This is SPECIFICALLY why I said "between two game accounts on the same master account". Because, that way, they KNOW that the same party is paying for all the stuff. There's no possibility that they're going to be abused. And Paragon has gotten their money, one way or another. -
Sorry. But I'm going to add my voice to the "Hahaha! YeahNO!" box.
Yes. Preemies have paid money. Some more than others.
They deserve something.
They've GOTTEN something. Their Paragon Rewards tokens, whatever points are in their account and anything they've paid to perma-unlock.
On TOP of that, they get to play everything BUT the Incarnate stuff and SSAs FOR FREE!
But you don't think they're getting their money's worth? You're getting all that for $0.00 a month. Where as, before, at that price, you got JACK SQUAT! And had to LIKE it that way!
If you want the Incarnate stuff, pay the $12-15/month (depending on your sub length and how hard you go after discounted time). Plain and simple.
If you don't want to pay the $12-15/month? Fine. Be happy with the massive amount of stuff you're getting for free.
Don't like those options? Take the third option.
Go pay to play ANOTHER game!
Or the fourth
Go NOT pay to play another game that gives you nothing or at least nothing close to what CoH does. Then come back once you're more appropriately educated and grateful. -
If you have the cash, get a Blu-Ray combo drive. It simply gives you another option.
I wouldn't worry about two optical burners. Unless you're *already* heavily using your opticals for major burn-fests on a regular basis. I have two opticals in mine. A Plextor DVD burner (LOVE Plextor, they're expensive, but they're some of the best opticals I've ever owned), and a Samsung Blu-Ray combo drive.
Frankly I haven't burned a disk on them in more than a year now... -
Quote:The Asus board you got came with an on-board video solution. If you're going discrete vidcard, I wouldn't spend for it. Just get a regular board. One less components to cause problems.Ok, Motherboard decision, revision, looking for new opinion time. ;-)
ASUS P8Z77-V LK (looking at it again I'm wondering why I chose this model over the other ASUS)
ASRock Z77 Extreme6 (beyond it being another ASRock, I think I might have chosen this one for the variety/number of ports)
Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H (I was truely impressed with the head disipation approach, liked the port options, and was really curious about that mSATA thing in the middle. I guess it does something in conjunction with your CPU?)
Does anybody know how many fan headers these have? It's really hard to find out unless someone's done a youtube review vid, but honestly I haven't looked there yet so...
Not a big fan of ASRock. They can be VERY hit-or-miss.
Their motherboard documentation needs a LOT of work too. -
Quote:If you're overclocking your CPU, anything relying on the CPU for processing runs faster. And if the CPU is feeding data to the GPU, it can feed it at higher rates if/when necessary.Beyond the obvious increase in numbers, what's the major advantage, performance wise, of overclocking?
If you're overclocking your GPU, anything relying on the GPU for graphics crunching runs faster.
Quote:I also have the concern of overheat constantly in my mind because of my living environment. Seeing as how I'm not the payer of the heating/cooling bill, I have no control over it. As I write this my room's 86.9F with the ceiling fan on high and all the windows open. Ambient outside temp is 72F. IDK what the moisture levels are, but we're less than a few hundred yards from a lake. I've seen my room go as high as 92F with my laptop, PS3, Apple G4 and TV all running at the same time. Whenever I pay lots of stuff down and can afford to live on my own again, things will be WAY different, but that's what it'll be like for a while.
Most cases seem to have a rear fan of either 120mm or 140mm and some have HUGE top fan(s) as well. I think I might wanna look into one with twin top fans just to be safe, but all this still has me wondering if the OEM fan/heatsink are going to handle this environment. -
Quote:I agree with GG.Actually, it combined a pretty wide scope of visually distinctive peices combined with pretty flexible uses - which is something that the other 2 sets didn't offer.
The Film Noir set would have run out of suggestions for distinctive parts quite fast, and ended up more as suggestions for which current costume parts that fit the theme could be revamped - it had the wide flexibility, but not the distinctive look.
The Aztec/Mayan set had the visual uniqueness, but not the flexibility, because the a lot of the parts would be almost too unique.
Basically, I think that the majority of the audience just looked at the 3 choices and thought "which of these will offer the most new and interesting parts that I can use on the widest variety of costume concepts?".
I...

Quote:bow before my nerdy overmastery!i think pretty much -everyone- who plays this game is a geek to a certain degree. The point is the player who would spend and entire day/weekend at a pummit is at the very least a "special" kind of geek who's probably a bit more "out there" than even the normal type of geek.
For better or worse we usually tend to be "at the mercy" of that kind of player where these things are concerned.

Quote:perhaps there should be a sticky at the top of one of the forums sections from one of the devs with a copy past of the answers given before, so its easy to find and easy to point people to, until they can solve the problems or build on the current systems, and dont have to keep answering the same thing to new people and interrupt more productive discussions.
i know that bases is a pretty straight forward answer, and pvp is too, though it has a lot more issues i think. and they HAVE explained it lots of times, but those times have all been to small audiences or in obscure places.
it would be nice to have it easy to find, in the forums and linkable, to reduce the fuss about it until it can be properly looked at... maybe... so when people say "why is BLAH broken or why isnt BLAH being looked at?!?!" people can say "link to answers here."
O_O
Nah. There'd still be the inevitable "What about PVPM. WHARGRRBL! Slap in the face! Everyone else does it! Oh! Did I mention? WHARGRRBL!" Posts. It"s just the nature of the beast. -
Quote:It's still a learning process. Both for them, and us. From what I have heard, this one ran better than the first. I expect that the next will be better still. So the Revamp panel was more about a storyline update than an architecture rebuild. More Mercy than Atlas. Understandable, but the guidelines should have been given in advance of the Pummit so people could prepare accordingly. That also explains why the discussion was around blueside zones - the content redside is more or less OK, if lacking in quantity.

Regarding powersets, I would have suggested Gravity Blast, but the game is in need of new Defense sets. Wonder how it will look, considering atomic and glow(s) already exist as auras. -
Quote:From what was being discussed, we're looking at a toggle based resist/debuff/regen/recovery set with the following:It depends on the set and the pros and cons of it. I'd need to know more than just a set's name before knowing if I was interested in it... at least a list and description of the powers would be essential.
- An exotic damage aura type (toxic).
- Leveraging of the ablative mechanic rather than a monster heal on top of the regen.
- Resistance (given early) to an exotic damage type (toxic).
- A unique combination nuke/self-res power.
- A godmode.
- A possibly unique "tradeoff" system in the regen/recovery mechanism where an undamaged player would start with high recovery, but as they took damage, would have their recovery come back down while their regen began to climb.
Granted, it is kinda premature at the moment. But it looks like it could be a VERY interesting (and easy) powerset to pick up and use. It's occupying a middle ground between Elec and Willpower. -
Quote:I refuse to go and buy them with Paragon points as well.I have not and will not buy any Supergamble Packs. Having said that I am under no illusion that my view is the majority, just looking at Las Vegas, Indian Casinos and Gaming parlors' success shows these kinds of things work very well and are revenue booms.
Cheers to those of you that are providing a nice chunk of revenue for PS to reinvest into our game. Thank you.
However, I have a surfeit of Reward Points that just keep accumulating (and nothing to spend them on, save a new costume set every 3-4 months). So I can be philosophical about dropping a bunch of RPs for a few. If you walk into a casino and they had you a club card with $50 for the machines, why not? -
Quote:Think of it as an exotic damage set version of Willpower.I guess Nature affinity will be free for VIPS.
Water blast next powerset released, since Beam riffle was the first Freedom powerset and its been a while since we get a ranged powerset.
Bio/ Symbiotic armor will need more tech since it comes with that new absortion mechanic.
No mention of sorcery of another upcoming powerpools and Psychic melee...
Meh for Radiation armor.
Mainly resist based rather than defense. Plus it has decent tools for regen/recovery and is leveraging the new "ablative" system.
The set's primary resists are semi-exotic.
It's got a toggle-based taunt/damage aura.
It uses a debuff mechanic (which can justify fairly fierce debuffs since they're resisted so heavily).
It's got an exotic damage aura and a combination self-res/nuke combo power that would be fairly unique in the game.
Plus a godmode.
As someone who plays Inv/WP/Stone and dislikes clicky mez protection, it actually sounds like it could become a nice optional power set.
Load in some set-based defense and it could possibly rival Elec for combination toughness. -
Quote:They're not ignoring you. They know you're there. And small things, here and there, are being done in PVP. Just not the overhaul that it truly needs. Kinda similar to the base crowd.I was saying how ignoring a portion of your playerbase is poor form.
Quote:PvPers in other MMOs aren't given the shaft to the same degree they are here.
Quote:It's less about "fix PvP" and more about "quit ignoring/acting like jerks to the people who want you to fix PvP, and at least try and have a discussion about it."
Note the term. "Conversation".
Not "screaming pillory". Not "hysterical accusation". Not "think I'm cleverly, subtly insulting them but it's about as subtle as a brick in the face" snipe-fest". You know, the usual thing that goes on.
When approached about it calmly and rationally, while tired of rehashing the subject for the umpty-quadrillionth time, they're perfectly willing to discuss the subject. They acknowledge that they know the system's broken. They simply don't have anyone that feels up to tackling that can of worms. More, they note the previous former dev who tried to step up and the warm, loving reception he got for his first step...
Quote:The reason people kept asking about PvP and bases was because they'd never gotten an answer and felt ignored.
The devs have been clear about this. Simply because someone missed the official answers and demands "the schpiel" all over again doesn't mean they should take time away from other, more current questions and their duties to chew old fat. -
I'd say it even if she didn't have a big, sharp knife pressed to my throat right now...
Quote:I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it.
Quote:When you think of core elements in other MMOs right now, PvP is a huge part. Quite a few MMOs have based their feature set around PvP and use it as a driving force for what sells their product.
How'd that work out for them?
The reason many of these other games are "successful" with PVP is because they're gear-based. All toons are essentially equal (or nearly so) without gear. And two same-class toons with the same gear are identical.
CoH has an absolute PLETHORA of powers and effects that need to be taken into account. And you have to have some sort of neutral starting point. Which CoH doesn't have. The powers in the game aren't balanced and were never really intended to be. Attempts to bring these balance-breakers down to a "fair" level has people screaming "nerf" and pointing out mechanics in other powers that need to be brought down because they break the new status ideal of "balance". It's all a race to the bottom essentially. At that point, they may as well give everyone an identical amount of hit points and brawl and let them go at it.
Quote:Neither of us are in a position to say whether or not it's a good business decision to go forward with it
Were I of a mind to, I could comment on the business case with a decent confidence level.
Quote:but a total absence of meaningful PvP is branded as something that can sink a new MMO in this age.
Quote:I'd say that's incentive enough to at least try to get it going.
Had that sort of rationale been correct, this would have been City of Combatskill and died horribly as many other clone titles have.
What made this game the success it is wasn't the PVP system or following what the industry hacks said "must" be done.
I'm glad you enjoy the PVP system in this game. Really and truly.
Just like I enjoyed playing the Photon laser tag system before it shut down.
Just like I enjoyed playing BattleTech sim pods at Virtual World before they shut down.
PVP is in the ******* step-child state it is for real, legitimate reasons.
And at some point you have to simply step back and assess it rationally.
Now, maybe if CoH had the crazy-insane success a certain 800 lb gorilla in the MMO space had, they'd have money to dump into any little project they desired. Good, bad or indifferent.
They don't. They need to be circumspect about what they spend money on. And they need to take actions that can maximize their returns.
History has shown them that dropping money into PVP doesn't put as much on their bottom line as other, more "foofy" things.
Ask Zwill to compare any of the top 10 market items' gross revenues to how much they can verify (though the exit surveys) was lost in subscription fees from players leaving post i13 and being generous in assuming they'd have stayed subscribed until today (figure $450/player).
Even if they could verify that they lost 1000 players. Look at the revenues from Super Packs ALONE. Even at the WORST possible exchange rate, that's sets the MINIMUM of around $300K in gross revenue (as they were specific about "top sellers on the paragon market"). That's 2/3rds of what was "lost" for a 3.5 year period. And Super Packs made that IN THREE MONTHS.
Paragon has people who can do cost-benefit analysis too. -
-
Right now, they haven't got any definitive plans to sell the Tier 9 VIP costume sets.
However, it was brought up during the talks about possibly selling stuff like this, or selling stuff and simply giving the VIPs some "head start" time with certain things, then automatically rolling it out to non-VIPs.
And the girl talking about murder arson and jaywalking is Polly Animatronic.
And it's humor people! HUMOR!
As for PVP. A rebalance isn't going to happen. There's too many factors affecting the game, and too many different mechanics interacting. Balancing it might be, mathematically, possible. But actually doing it would likely result in something everyone would hate even MORE because it'd be utterly unrecognizable as the game you play now. -
A group of flat 50's/50+1's? You'll fail at the Avatar. Period.
You won't survive the confuse spam. (Unless those +1's are all getting their +1 from rocking T3/4 Clarions. -
Well, for sheer min-max, convert one of the common IOs in Stamina to a PerfShifter EndMod. Will slightly bump your movement speed. Won't do anything for Fly, but Hover will speed up a bit.
Also, if you're looking for KB mitigation, you can swap out the last Defense IO in the Ally bubbles. You go from giving 25.85% defense to 25.15% defense (basically almost no change, so I wouldn't even bother with boosters unless you've got tons to spare).
Or you could save those slots for Health and drop a Numina Heal and the Unique in there to give your recovery and regen a bit of a leg up.

Okay, in the last week I've run something in the neighborhood of about 10 arcs for salvage.
9 commons and one VR. When the VR dropped I nearly died of shock. -
Quote:Because I could. I'm sitting on a massive load of PP at the moment. Why buy Thunderstrikes from the store? They're easy enough to get in-game. And there's a, ahem, controversy going on right now about certain store-bought enhancements leading a number of players to boycott them.
Moreover, because the Thunderstrikes exemp. So I basically keep my defense numbers down to level 27.
Quote:Regenerative Tissue is a Proc120s. In Rise of the Phoenix it will only be active for the 2 minutes after using Rise of the Phoenix. If you're leaving it as a one-slot wonder, maybe a Mez/Dmg HO instead?
One of the reasons why I asked for people to look. I occasionally pull boners like this. Like accidentally tossing a Kismet 6% Acc unique into...PFF (facepalm). -

I may or may not look at things...
In all seriousness though Grey Pilgrim is right. I am going to go through the various procs and will test out those with a really low % proc chance and try to identify why they were set so low. If nothing scary happens (meaning I find a potential exploit) I will likely increase their performance. I can't say exactly what will change and by how much as everything involving these changes are simply on paper right now.

At Dinah's.
Nice place.
Tour of nVidia was nice. Got to see some of their testing lab stuff. These are the guys who go out of their way to test stuff to the breaking point. They also do custom manufacturing for internal use. VERY cool.
These are the guys who give the stamp of approval for SLI-worthy ratings for components. -
Quote:Tohit?
I quite liked ya build, it made me spark up mine to see what I went for. What you've done is dropped in some offense with some attacks in order to maintain high defense. I get that, I didn't do that myself, I settled for being offensive and with the need for a luck to softcap but I team and teams bring all kinds of things that may put me in the position of simply being about full on damage.
yeah. like I said, I was doing so much damage I was ripping aggro. It kinda sucks when half a group un-glomps from the tank, comes over and make you kiss carpet and thank them for the opportunity...
My damage output has come down. Sure. But I am a lot safer now (I'm a big proponent of "safe") and can solo in DA at greater than x1 without ROTP'ing every mob. -
Beware!
Hyperstrike has landed! (Yeah. It wasn't an earthquake.)
And he's coming for YOU!
Flew out on the OMGWTF-early flight from Chicago to Phoenix (man those jetpacks are slow).
My connection was 3/4ths empty so I had a row to myself coming in.
Filling early got us out here early too.
Was actually at nVidia over an hour earlier than expected.
ROCK ON!
Forgot my car charger.
And this Altima I'm driving is pushbutton start.
