    And you were essentially "griping" about a power because it was more or less functionally similar (not identical) to something granted by another power set.

    Rad Armor looks to become sufficiently differentiated from Elec that there will be concrete reasons for taking one or the other.

    If that's your line of reasoning, why not simply condense all defense/resist sets into one set called "Armor" and be done with it?

    Rad Armor is going to be a "defensive" (not "Defense") set. Because of this, it's going to share some commonalities with other defensive sets. That means that some parts of it are going to look like other sets. How it creates its own niche, in the end, will be up to Synapse (and some player feedback).

    It still has to be developed, balanced, etc. So the form that it finally takes if/when released will likely be somewhat different (with at least SOME information from the original panel surviving).

    It's primary mitigation is Resistance (with exotic resists being part of the toggles instead of based in a click heal).
    It's secondary mitigation is Regen.
    It's tertiary mitigation is persistent Debuff.
    It's quaternary mitigation will be the Absorb/Ablative effect.

    Think about slathering on some set-based defense on top of this and how fricking evil it would be.

    Spikes could still cause this set problems, since it relies on Regen rather than Heal. But the Absorb/Ablative power is functionally similar.

    Also, we're looking at a dual-purpose heal/recovery power that uses thresholds of damage to determine which effect is dominant
    • Low-to-no damage = High recovery, low regen
    • High damage = Low recovery, high regen
    All in all, this sounds like an exceptionally interesting set to play, and with IOs, could rival Elec for sheer general durability and damage output potential.

    It's not a self-destruct per se.

    It's looking to be a unique power that's part nuke, part self-rez.

    If you use it while you're alive, it's a "regular" nuke.

    If you die and then trigger it, think Rise of the Phoenix. Except with a mushroom cloud.

    As I said, this looks to be totally unique to non-Incarnate powers. It's not just a limited use power that only works if you fail. But a power that can be a regular part of your attack sequence.

    If you hit Newegg, they should provide a link back to the product's page on the parent company's website.

    Most of them have a PDF version of the motherboard manual available. And most of those have a board layout in them describing fan header locations.

  18. Okay, I'm home, I'm somewhat rested, and TOTALLY not recovered from the Players' Summit.

    1. Dinah's: GREAT place. Though if the event keeps growing, we're going to run into space issues fast. Parking during the event was something of a fiasco. The hotel itself was DAMN nice though. I've paid nearly twice what Dinah's charges for rooms and not had such nice accommodations. For the super budget-conscious, looking to do the "communal crash pad", the rooms are HUGE.
    2. Traveling: I REALLY recommend taking the absolute earliest flight in on Friday that you can manage. It tends to get you in ahead of the crunch, and leaves you time for sight-seeing. GPS or good directions is a must though as it'd be QUITE easy to get lost otherwise. TonyV and I actually found the first two HQ for Atari while we were out there. We also assaulted Hell with naught but a water bucket. Err, we visited the Apple Company Store at One Infinite Loop (sorry, sorry, my Mac hatred runs deep). TonyV even got himself a tour of the Googleplex. I also got to visit a buddy over on the nVidia campus.
    3. Which Airport: SJC (Mineta Intl. Airport) is a VERY nice place to fly into. While the fact that I got in at 9AM local time helped, it was VERY nice to be out of there within 30 minutes of arrival. And from there, it was a straight shot to Dinah's.
    4. Rental car: Renting a car is probably going to be cheaper than cabbing it everyplace or relying on rides. Just take into account what I said about the parking situation at Dinah's. If you rent a car, fill it up before you return it! Otherwise, my rental would have cost me $9.28 a gallon!
    5. Panel Planning: I agree with the sentiment that the basic premise to all the panels should be known in advance. This way it gives attendees time to brainstorm. As it was, I only turned back one of the cards (for the zone revamp panel) because I was kind of caught out and going "Uh...burrito?" and trying not to look like I just drooled on myself.
    6. The dinner: For Paragon. Is there any way that we could get a safe/bland "third option" for the dinners? I went with the beef because I figured it'd be safe. Only to find out that there were mushrooms in the dish (as there were in the salad). I have some fairly FIERCE allergic reactions to several types of dietary mushrooms (and thus just avoid ALL of them at all cost). Luckily there was someone who was willing to trade their choice off to me, but still.
    7. Karaoke: I just dunno. I'm not a karaoke person. Not pointing fingers or anything. And I, personally, couldn't carry a tune in a bucket. Just...well...y'know.
    All in all though, Paragon puts on a decent shindig. And it was DAMN nice to go to an event and not working it for once...

    Also, with the S2011 boards, notice there are TWO varieties.

    Quad-channel, single row
    Quad-channel, dual row.

    QCSR boards look nearly indistinguishable from Socket 2011 boards. They have 4 DIMM slots and that's it.

    It's the slightly more expensive QCDR boards that are able to mount up to 8 sticks.

    And why not just buy 2 sticks of 8GB memory? Then you can chunk in another 16GB later on without replacement.

    The extra fans will help keep the case temps down, closer to ambient room temperature. But liquid cooling isn't going to do a hell of a lot for you since your ambient temps are already so high.

    You'd be better off buying a cheap window air conditioning unit than spending out on an expensive liquid cooling setup.

    No. It basically has a "learning" algorithm. So, at first, the system's going to run like there's no SSD attached. Over time it's going to cache the frequently accessed stuff on the SSD.

    Actually no. Asus has multiple versions of the same board. The options are all just a bit different on each of them.

    And I don't mean they have an on-board GPU. Should have been more clear. The version you have has the connectors for VGA and DVI so they can take advantage of the on-die CPU of Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge processors.

    Of course, now that I'm looking closer, I'm noting ALL the damn things (save a couple of the expensive "enthusiast" versions of the board) have the headers for the VGA and DVI.

    Head over here to see the differences between the various Ivy Bridge processors.

    The closest equivalent to the 2500K is the 3570K.

    Ivy Bridge prefixes:
    37## = i7-type core.
    35## = i5-type core.
    K = Enthusiast class processor. The processor multiplier is unlocked to allow finer-control in overclocking. You can overclock non-K class processors. But that involves overclocking the system bus, which overclocks ALL the components on the bus. Unlocking the multiplier allows JUST the CPU to be overclocks, and at a finer-grained rate than just kicking up the bus clock.

    No, it's what I described above. ALL of these CPUs have a built-in graphics accelerator in them. It's not a gaming class GPU. But, for most desktop-related functions, they're fine.

    It depends. Some apps are heavily multithreaded and can benefit from the i7 architecture. Most games won't really see a massive difference. If you're doing encryption cracking, the i7 will be better (but a GeForce/Radeon GPU client will suck the doors off the i7). File compression via ZIP/etc will benefit. Video processing/encoding runs faster on an i7.

    The i5 2500K was the better bang for the buck because the i7 2600K didn't really add any performance for the extra $100 to your gaming. At the same time, being a K-class processor, you have the OPTION of some light overclocking so you CAN add extra performance. And the price differential between the standard 2500 and the 2500K is a whopping $20. Just don't go to the movies one time and you're good.

    The same is true of the i5 3570K and the i7 3770K. You have a $100 difference (where the i5 is cheaper). And for gaming purposes, the i7 doesn't give you any performance boost over the i5.

    What's the difference between the 2### series and the 3### series?
    The 3### series has undergone a "die shrink". Basically they're using a new lithography process to render what is "essentially" the same chip in a smaller size.

    Meaning they can crank out more chips per wafer, and the newer chips actually require less energy.

    Moreover, there have been some subtle refinements to the architecture as well, resulting in better IPC (Instructions Per Clock). This means that, ostensibly, the newer processors can accomplish more per given "tick" of the CPU clock. Meaning they could possibly complete extensive, long-running operations faster.

    There's a SMALL downside to the new architecture. It runs a little hotter, even though it uses less power. The reason is, the die (chip) size is smaller. Therefore there's less surface area over which to transfer heat to the heat dissipation devices.

    Yes. It's electrically compatible with older 2.0 cards. You simply won't see the full 3.0 data rate out of it.

    If you're going to drop $250 on a card, I might suggest spending the extra $30 and going for the GTX 560 Ti 448-core (essentially a 570 with a couple cores that didn't meet spec turned off). The performance improvement is enough to justify the $30 price bump.

    Yep. Socket 1155 is Socket 1155. While Intel put out Socket 2011 and quad-channel RAM for "enthusiasts", it chose to keep the 1155 as their main socket interface for now. Sensible, since Ivy Bridge is just a shrunken Sandy Bridge. No money investing in extra infrastructure to support another new socket type.

    Memphis gave you a pic of the 690. I have the identical case. And yeah. there's a loop you use for a cable lock. Once placed, you can't get the side panel open without removing the cable lock first.

    If you are going to "chain" the computer to the desk anyhoo, an extra lock doesn't accomplish anything more.

    And if some schmuck steals it ANYHOW, a barrel lock will only slow them down. They HAVE the computer. If they just wanted a computer for themselves, they have it. If they want to strip the system out, all they need is a pen to pop a barrel lock.

    Hmm. Looking at the CM690 II that's out. It's sans-loop now. Not cool.

    If you're not looking to watercool or using 2.5" SSDs, I'd recommend taking a look at the Lian Li PC-9F.
