Quote:Why yes! Yes it is!Just got back from a midnight showing. It's great. Go see it.
Stay after the credits, for both stingers. Both are great.
*SPOILERS*
Hulk thrashing Loki around like a ragdoll was the single most satisfying scene I've ever watched in any movie, ever. -
Just got back myself.
It's Thor's own night out there in Chicago. Stormy as hell with huge miles-long thunderbolts lighting up the sky.
But a little thing like death by EXTREME electrocution isn't going to stop me.
This is right up there with Nolan's Batman for greatest Superhero Flick EVER. And for completely different reasons. Nolan went for gritty realism.
Whedon...eh...not so much.
As expected, Downey gets some of the BEST dialog in the film.
But the Hulk. MY GOD! He get not one, not two, BUT ALL of the best and funniest scenes in the entire flick! It's like someone fused all of the Stooges together, tossed a bucket of green paint on them and then ticked them off.
Basically Whedon's sense of "funny" is what keeps this flick from getting too melodramatic. And there's so much of it in there that you almost can't catch it all in one sitting. You just can't. He got the tone of the film ABSOLUTELY perfect.
And for those of you worried that this was a case of "It was all in the commercials". No. Not even close. Not even in the same time zone.
If any of these apply to you:
- Whedon fan
- Action film fan
- Comedy film fan
- Drama film fan
- Superhero fan
- Marvel fan
- Fan of ANY of the properties involved
- LIKE GOOD MOVIES!
- LIKES MOVIES!
- Has $10 in your pocket AND A PULSE.
Do yourself a favor and go see it.
Don't wait for DVD.
Don't wait for a damn crappy cam download.
If you even THINK of waiting for it on Netflix, you're dead to me.
SEE THE FRICKING FILM IN THE THEATER!
2D, 3D, whatever floats your skirt up.
But see it. This is one of those films that Hollywood rarely puts out that actually deserves to be gone to and watched on the big screen. If you want to see more films like this, tell the movie industry about it by going and seeing this one. -

Okay, the i5 3570K and the i5 2500K are pretty much interchangeable (with the 3570K being the slightly more expensive.
The Asus Z77 board can be downgraded to the Asus Z68 board with little to no performance loss.
Honestly, if you're playing just CoH, you don't REALLY need much more than a GTX 560 Ti. The 680 was just a suggestion since it fit your budget.
With memory, 16GB is nice. 8GB should probably be minimum.
As for brands to avoid?
Motherboards: Stick with Asus or Gigabyte. Some people like ASRock too. They don't really impress me though (very hit-or-miss with their products).
GPU: If you're going with medium to high end gaming GPUs for nVidia, they're more or less interchangeable. Currently EVGA is probably the brand to beat.
PSU: Thermaltake, CoolerMaster, Antec, and Silverstone are names *I* trust.
SSDs: Most of the ones on the Sandforce controllers can be hit or miss. But they're also some of the best performers. Corsair's offerings are decent. As are Crucial's. Intel is the stability Gold Standard, though they won't win on performance or price. OCZ makes some "okay" SSDs but they can be flaky sometimes.
HDD: My personal preference are for Western Digital. Specifically the Caviar Black drives. But they're fairly spendy at higher densities. For a file dump drive, the Blues aren't bad. Haven't really touched the Greens much.
Cases are more or less interchangeable.
Memory, you want to pay attention on. You still want the DDR3 1600 stuff. The lower the CAS rating the better. But don't let yourself get tricked into spending more simply because one memory's CAS is a WHOPPING 1 nanosecond faster than the other's.
Win7 Home. You want the 64-bit version so you can take advantage of 4+GB of memory.
Rule #1: Beware ostensibly "identical" parts that are MUCH less expensive than other offerings in the same space. If you see a 700W PSU for $30, and the rest are around $100-150, odds are you REALLY don't want that $30 PSU (unless you LIKE buying PSUs made of concrete, or want to burn your components out).
Unless you're overclocking (more than minor levels), you don't need a spendy aftermarket cooler. The default HSF will work just fine.
Hopefully that will give you a start. -
Quote:The market is an ANTI-social place. It's an action-free PVP zone.I'm not sure where y'all are getting the notion that the market isn't supposed to be a social space when that's *exactly* what it's been since the invention system was introduced.
You're not there for a costume contest.
You're not there to talk to the guy next to you.
You're there to extract money (Inf) from someone who wants something you have.
As others have said. This is a solution searching desperately for a problem. -
Quote:Your antipathy toward the idea seems to indicate it would be an effective incentive. =D
In any case it would provide another inf sink in a game with epidemic inflation.
Please. Not this broken line of "reasoning":
- They agree with me, therefore I am right.
- They disagree with me, therefore I am right.
Tacking on a fee won't remove the incentive to use /AH.
Tacking on a fee to my loyalty perk WILL piss me the hell off.
I've spent enough REAL money with the company that a silly little grab for my virtual currency like this would irritate me in ways I don't really even like to contemplate. -
Quote:I really love /ah and wouldn't trade it for anything.
But I miss being able to pop in to Wentworths and find a bunch of folk hanging out doing their thing. IMHO the game needs *more* public gathering places where your character can feel like part of an actual CITY of Heroes.
So, how to incentivize players actually using the actual market locations?
Well, I'm glad you asked...
A convenience fee on remote transactions!
In a world were banks happily charge you $2 to pull $20 out of their ATM, surely the Market deserves to gouge for the unparalleled utility of the remote AH screen!
A small, flat fee would make the physical market more attractive without putting a serious dent in the utility of /ah. Also, INF SINK!
Say, 5 or 10 inf per transaction?
Not hurting for inf by even the craziest stretch of the imagination, but no.
Actually, howsabout HELL NO.
It's, essentially, a vet perk.
It's not much of a perk if it costs more every time you use it.
And screw "incentivizing actually going to the market".
One of the reasons we HAVE /AH in the first place is because various market locations are morasses of lag and hideous power spam that people have been BEGGING for some way to avoid for YEARS.
Quoth Thor: I SAY THEE NAY! -
Quote:They REALLY don't want to do this.I have one point: You might want to keep a forum for these languages, even if you can't moderate it. Maybe just keeping the server forums is enough, like you plan to do, but then make sure they are marked as Zukunft (Deutsch), Vigilante (Français).
They don't want to open up a section of their forums to becoming a "Wild West" that they can neither read nor moderate properly. It could open them up to all sorts of liability.
Would any of the various nasty scenarios that could get them in trouble ACTUALLY happen? Probably not. But an ounce of prevention is worth considerably more than a pound of cure in the form of legal department billing.
But leaving those forums open in a non-archived, unmoderated state would be the same thing as going to 4Chan, insulting them, then dropping one's trousers and bending over. -

Okay, with the extreme markup for Euro I've come up with a new list on the ComputerUniverse site.
Case
Power Supply
Motherboard
CPU & Cooler
Memory
Graphics Card
Boot/Game Drive
Storage Drive
Optical Drive
OS
This comes out to about 1260 Euro ($1660) shipped.
While it's not QUITE as "balls to the wall" as the Newegg system quoted above, it's STILL going to be a complete butt-kicker of a system and falls within your price range.
As to ordering stuff in the US and shipping.
Essentially the shipping costs for any place that WOULD ship it would completely destroy the price difference between buying abroad in dollars or "local" in Euros.
As for a friend who's helping. Offer money. He may turn your cash offer down.
At least deliver pizza and beer/soda/whatever when he's over helping you assemble.
WATCH HIM LIKE A HAWK so he doesn't make off with your spiffy new system (that he'll be turning green with envy over). -
Honestly, while I'm all for more options, this kinda thing is VERY slippery slope.
1: What if the other person has XP earnings turned off (or is L50)?
2: What if the person is leveling at a pace THEY feel is appropriate, and doesn't wish to have their XP earnings boosted?
The first comes dangerously close to selling snake oil.
The second comes dangerously close to usurpation of another player's prerogatives for control of their character. -
They'll put flashy LEDs on ANYTHING nowadays!

Okay, took Find's last build and tweaked it a bit. Defense came down a little (save in Psi). But I was able to kick up recharge to the point where you have Perma DP and Perma Hasten.
Moreover, since your regular defense were so high already, I went ahead and did something I normally don't do. Patched over the Psi hole a bit.

Yeah. There are ways to cap out Psi defense. But they usually compromise you in other ways. Like being so end-heavy you outstrip your recovery. And having to use things like Stealth (not a +Stealth IO, the Stealth power), which then leaves you BELOW softcap when you attack.
-
One other thing. Since this is a Dell we're talking about, remembet that the power supplies are no stronger than they absolutely need to be (305W in this case).
It's possible that you're inducing some sort of spike in power usage that's exceeding the PSU's ability to supply, causing an insufficient power situation and leading to a crash. -
Quote:And this brings me back to my suggestion:
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=288296
Revamp T9VIP, make it accessible to all (and only) VIPs, and rename it T-VIP.
I see the same mentality regarding the VIP outfits here. People fighting for their elite status and ego, while showing signs of megalomania and narcissism.
The only thing I worry about is that this forces non-T9's to choose between the vet status perks and the costumes. -
Quote:Because the T9 VIP allows you to have it FIRST. And for a fairly long period (12-18 months) before anyone else gets their grubby little paws on it.So basically you will rename the "T9 VIP" to "T9 VIP for sometime and then everyone can have it via another method"? Tell me, what's the point of having a "T9 VIP" again then?
Here's a suggestion: make "T9 VIP" go away, turn it into a "Revolving Tier" and let everyone have access to it, regardless of what tier they are actually on. This way you still get your points (money) and at least there's no pretence of creating VIP costume content only. -
Okay, going to quote you towards the lower end of your budget spectrum.
This will help cover shipping, currency conversion vagaries, and trying to get product in your "neck of the woods".
Giving you Newegg links so you can at least see the products I'm talking about.
Case
Power Supply
Motherboard
CPU & Cooler

Boot/Game Drive

This would put you about $1710 before shipping.
With you being in a location I'm not familiar with (for getting parts into), I'm expecting you to pay a premium for at least SOME of them.
Cost-cutting measures:
You could step back to a Sandy Bridge platform with an i5 2500K. This would shave off about $30 from the CPU and another $30 from the motherboard of a similar Z68 version (A V-LE model).
Dropping down to 8GB from 16GB will save you about $55.
You can also go with a cheaper hard drive. Staying with 1GB but going non-WD or at least non-Caviar Black will cut about $30-40 off your costs.
Also, the GTX680 is the most powerful single-GPU card extant right now. It's priced at $500.
Stepping down to a 560 Ti 448 Core would be a fairly hefty step down. But you can still near-max CoH on one and it'll save you about $220.
Stepping down to a GTX 580 would save you about $70-100.
With all of the above-suggested cuts, you could cut off $250 or so.
That'd probably leave you with enough to buy a monitor.
Maybe something like this one. -

Quote:Nope, okay, see, right there is my disconnect.
Let's say I'm on Nebula, the "nobody's here" server. (See? You've never even heard of it, that's how few people are on Nebula!) I want to team. I click "Transfer to Other Server", make my choice, and within moments, bam. Teams. Invites. Costume Contests. More players than I can shake an Endurance bar at.
I have my bit of fun, and when I'm done, if I want, I click, "Go Home", and bam, I'm back to Nebula and solo-style play.
That seems like a lot less coding for the Devs than "cross server teaming", but accomplishes about 95%+ of the same things in my mind.
It does vastly reduce the "server transfer token" use, but wouldn't cross-server teaming mostly do that anyway?
Again, I'm not trying to be difficult. I honestly feel like I'm some sort of blind fool, who can't see how obviously awesome cross-server teaming is, because I can't think it's much more than "free unlimited server transfers".
Memphis_Bill - Valid points, I suppose. But again, those can be addressed by making those properties "sticky" when you click "transfer to other server" button.
Currently transfers break SG links. Meaning that if you move over to another server, you have to recruit yourself back in somehow when you come back. You also lose your member date and prestige count.
Worse, there's no guarantee your name will be free when you transfer.
I don't want to take Hyperstrike, move him to "Nebula" only to find there's a Hyperstrike already there and I have to rename him. Or worse, have someone snatch Hyperstrike from me on my "home" server while I'm away, meaning I have to rename when I get back. No, no, hell the **** no.
CST should, ostensibly, be a system that allows you to share mission instances with other players and generally do your thing without breaking your SG connection or losing you your name.
