Agreed. While the Ultimates continuum has had some interesting stuff in it (like Mr. Samuel L. "THIS *IS* MY INDOOR VOICE ******-******!" Jackson as Fury), by and large it's been one horrendous ball of stupid, corporate-sponsored fanfic-grade crap.

Amazon is NOT a haven for the technically literate. If your hard drive dies, you plonk a new one in.

If worse comes to worst, you simply call Microsoft's Activation line, explain that the old drive died and the new drive is replacing it.

The hardware activation isn't THAT sensitive. You basically have to swap 3/4ths of the system components to trip it, and if you do, you simply call the activation line and tell them your CPU and motherboard died in a freak lightning storm and you've replaced them. It's STILL the same machine.

As long as you're not going:

    Install: Activate

6 weeks later: New system, install, reactivate

6 weeks later: New system, install, reactivate

6 weeks later: New system, install, reactivate

THOSE kinds of things they track.

Also, one thing you can spend money on, OTHER than a craptastic old copy of XP, or the full retail Win7? A copy of Acronis True Image.

Once you have your system installed, patched, and just the way you like it, THEN register it. THEN IMAGE IT.

Instead of needing to take 4-8-hours to reinstall everything AGAIN if you blow a drive, you simply mount the new drive, fire up Acronis and drop the original image back onto the system in an hour or two. Then just patch it to current, reimage it, and keep truckin'.

And no pesky reactivation to worry about.

Sorry if you find what I'm about to say offensive. But the way you're looking to go about this is the most painful, expensive and bass-ackwards method available to you.

I liked it because it showed the Hulk keeping memory across appearances and doing something 'playful' if a bit violent to a cohort...

In short, an example, I think of the contrast between someone who grew up enjoying Marvel comics and someone who didn't sitting in the audience for the film.
Yeah, I mostly meant it as:

    Hulk = The Avengers
    Thor = The Hunger Games

  5. You may just need to reinstall your graphics drivers.

For a metaphorical representation, she's peeved about this:

  7. So you're going to pay double for a retail copy, just on the off chance you may replace your system in a year or two?

    Don't waste your money.
  8. I'm going to say "Well, YEAH".

The Roman chest piece is meant for skintight stuff. Period. If you're going to use baggy, you should EXPECT clipping.

Why they haven't locked out some of these things when using baggy? Dunno.

You say it never used to? I dunno about that. I think you're mis-remembering.

  10. The only real differences between Home and Pro are:

    1. Pro can access more memory
    2. Pro can join domains
    3. XP Mode (running a Virtual PC XP instance inside Win7)
    4. Full access to the backup/restore tool for full system backups.

Unless you're on a system with +16GB of RAM or you happen to need Active Directory support for some reason, going Windows Professional is a waste of money.

XP Mode isn't very useful to many home users. A couple of my clients use it to support some apps that don't play nice in Win7. But other than that...

As for the backup/restore tool. Most users aren't going to use it anyhow. Moreover, there are third party system imaging tools out there that are easier and far superior to the somewhat arcane backup tool.

In short, just save time and money and go XP Home 64-bit.
  11. Okay, just about any primary (for brutes) and secondary (for tanks) will work fine with Stone.

At lower levels you're going to be running multiple armor, status resistance, and healing toggles though. So you can conceivably eat LOTS of endurance.

Once you get to Granite, it becomes easier to manage. But Granite has its own set of problems.

    1. Your movement is even MORE severely debuffed than it is with Rooted alone.
    2. Your damage is debuffed severely.
    3. Your recharge also takes a MASSIVE hit.
It's possible to PARTIALLY offset the first with some set bonuses and heavily slotting Swift.

It's possible to PARTIALLY offset the second with set bonuses. But in some cases this can compromise your build's main focus (which is heavily layered defense, resistance and regen).

It's possible to completely offset the final one. But in doing so, you're merely rendering yourself no better off (and usually still lacking, damage-wise) compared to an equivalent tank/brute with another armor set.

While Granite could be viewed as a God Mode, you're not a God. You're simply, when built properly THE most survivable player AT/Powerset combo in the game. You'll hear stories of people who AFK on a Stoner in the middle of a horde of enemies, come back 20 minutes later and find the character not only alive, but all of the enemies either dead or close to it.

As for your third question. There is no "best tank". Electric, Willpower and Invulnerability can be brought within spitting distance of equivalent toughness. Other sets have different types of mechanics allowing them to offset damage differently.

What makes a tank/brute "good" is NOT their power choices. It's how skillfully the toon is played.

Poor framerate in any outdoors area?

    Resolution: 1920x1080
    Anti-aliasing: 32x
    Anisotropic Filtering: 16x
    Ambient Occlusion: Ultra
Occlusion Strength: Strong with color bleeding
Uh, YEAH! I should think so!

Inside instances are much less complex in most cases and don't have the poly count that outdoor instances do. Remember, your card is rendering EVERYTHING in your field of vision. So I'm betting the primary culprit is your AF. As there's more distant objects needing filtering in outdoor instances.

Also keep in mind that OGL is harder on a system than equivalent DirectX titles and you have your culprit.

Also, honestly, at 1920x1080 can you even SEE the difference between 32x FSAA and 16x AF and a more modest 8x FSAA and 4x AF?

On top of that you have Ambient Occlusion cup-checking your system in "swing for the fence" fashion.

The combination you have above is something that's going to make pretty much ANY card weep.

You're probably not running out of memory or GPU. You're probably running out of video memory bandwidth and tying up enough CPU with the high AO to starve the graphics card out.
  13. Took the easy way out.
Subbed the generic Resist in Charged Armor with the PVP IO.
The set you had in Foot Stomp didn't come across at all for some reason.
Reading in, I saw it was an Oblit set. I guess for the positional defense. But for an actual attack it BITES for endurance reduction. I think you'll like the setup I've dropped in better.

    63.8% recharge.

  14. Since my last post, I've had roughly 20 component drops across multiple characters. All but one of which have been common. The last was an uncommon which dropped last night.

Merits drops from the table have been mainly astrals, but I've gotten a couple emp drops.

I know "random" can mean "randomly bad", but I'm getting REALLY ******* irritated with nearly endless randomly bad streaks.

If any devs are actually reading this, can someone go over the logs of drop percentages with a fine toothed comb? I can see having to get dozens of tables to get one good drop now and again. Getting scores is kinda pushing it. Asking people to whack down HUNDREDS of drop tables just to get a single rare or very rare is "self-trepanation" levels of stupidly insane.

Granted, you're paying ***-**** prices at that point.
  16. I've gotten a little play in on my DB/WP Stalker, unshifted in DA lately.
It's been a while since I actually played her. And she's a completely different animal now with the changes to Assassin's Strike. VERY scrapperish. And I haven't even TOUCHED the ATIO set yet.

    In short: ME LIKE!
  17. Actually we may not. Flash memory has a distinct problem. As transistor size goes down, so does transistor durability. This isn't a problem YET. But it's going to become one in another couple die shrinks.

Basically flash drives are hitting right now because they CAN and because it makes sense, even if it's still in the luxury category.

But in a few years they're going to be stuck unless a different type of storage memory can be found that's more durable.

Remember that defense without any resistance is setting you up for eggshell syndrome.

Basically you're running along, perfectly fine, until you're not. Then you're licking linoleum.

For S/L and F/C you're good. And with the paucity of psi, you're no worse off than any other player if something gets through.

But the deficit in E/N resistance can hurt bad. ESPECIALLY late-game and in Incarnate content. Tower-buffed Lord Recluse will wreck you.

Late game, defense debuffs (which are flying more freely) will also **** your world up.

Don't get me wrong. A granite-less tank can be built quite tough. But Granite is still a better option for everything save psi-heavy mobs.

Also, Stone's regen is not "sick". It's decent, but it's no Regen or WP. What makes it so useful is the layering of defense and resistance on top of it. This makes it FAR easier to keep ahead of incoming damage.

    Here's a Graniteless tank.

Which is the tougher tank? Which can you pretty much walk away from in any mob and still be confident it'll be there when you come back?

    Exactly.

Overall I seem to have a collection of WD drives (mostly the passports) with the exception of a Seagate that's serving to backup my PS3 as it requires a FAT32 partition and I think I'm done upgrading the HDD in the PS3 for now (last upgrade was 500Gb). I've clocked 3 out of 4 Fujitsu(?) factory installed laptop HDDs as dead within 5yrs of purchase so I definitely won't lean that way ever again. I used to buy Maxtor disks back in the day, but I don't even think they exist anymore. :-p
    Fujitsu = bad news.

Maxtor was bought by Seagate a few years back.

Um my understanding is that it is a bad idea to raid the green drives. There meant to sit idle more often and haven't be reinforced to run high speeds alot and be accessed and written alot. Aka what I am saying is that raiding said drives will burn them out way way faster cause raid will use the drive highly.
Western Digital's current generation of Green drives are RAID-capable (RAID-0 and RAID-1).
And, with a RAID-1 (mirrored) setup for storage, you're not going to run into issues with array breakage due to drive spin-up or extra wear due to needing both drives active, as on a RAID-0 array..

Oh and personally I don't see the point of getting a drive smaller then 500gb anymore, it is just so cheap and common.
    Agreed.
  22. Try something for me.

    Try disconnecting the USB headset.

See if it is still unstable.

All you had to do was watch the Summit presentation. They talked about a second set of Super Packs there.
  24. If you're looking for redundancy, yeah, I think a self-built setup would probably be a better idea. You CAN buy RAID-enabled devices, but they're usually somewhat pricey and somewhat painful to get running.
