If you're already running off an SSD, a Ramdrive isn't going to give you a monstrous performance increase at all.

The big thing with SSDs is that the disk-centric portions of a map load run faster. A Ramdrive might shave a second or two off something that already only really takes a few seconds. And, due to latency in how the client communicates back to the server for synchronization, it may result in no boost in load speeds at all.

    Build Advice

    1. STOP CHASING PSI RESIST! You, quite simply, CANNOT accrue enough of it to make it worthwhile on an Invuln tanker.
    2. Build to bolster your typed defenses. In doing so, you will also bolster your positional defenses, to the point where you'll be better defended through Ranged and AoE
    3. Optimal resist slotting for Invunl is based on whether or not the slotting is active or passive.
      1. Active Resist (Temp Invuln, Unyielding, Tough (from Fighting Pool)): 4-slots of Reactive Armor
        1. Resist
        2. Resist/Endurance
        3. Resist/Recharge
        4. Resist/Endurance/Recharge
      2. Passive Resist (Resist Physical Damage, Resist Energies, Resist Elements): 3-slots of Aegis
        1. Resist
        2. Resist/Endurance
        3. Resist/Recharge
    4. If you're tossing in the two 3% Defense Uniques (Steadfast Protection and Gladiator's Armor), allot them early on in the build to prevent exemping out of it.
    5. Uniques like the Miracle + Recovery don't belong in click powers like Dull Pain. They're only active when the power is. It, like the Numina +Regen/+Recovery, belong in Health or Physical Perfection. Preferably Health, as you can't exemp out of health.
    6. You're built with too many attacks. Even with no recharge added in, you're running more slotted attacks than you can maintain in continuous chain. Worse, many of them are underslotted. Foot Stomp has "meh" damage enhancement and HORRIFIC Accuracy. Even level stuff, you'll hit. But beyond +1 or +2 you're going to have a hell of a time hitting bosses and LTs. If you're fighting Rikti Drones, they're weak to AoE damage.
    7. Built right, you really shouldn't need Focused Accuracy because Rage will be perma-plus.
    8. If you're going to build for defense, you don't need Unstoppable. You'll be ridiculously durable without it, and you won't have the "Just kill me now" crash to worry about.
    9. Taunt is underslotted. On a team you're going to have trouble holding aggro if your teammates output a lot of damage.
    10. Concept or not, Leaping is a better option for your tank. Combat Jumping adds to your defenses and doesn't stop powers like Foot Stomp from working the way something like Fly/Hover do.
    11. You've slotted for additional KB protection in Resist Elements. Uh. Why? Most of the things in the top-end game that CAN bounce you around are going to do so because they're sporting CRAZY levels of KB/Repel that you simply can't build high enough for. Your native KB/Repel resistance in Unyielding will more than cover you for 99.999% of the game.

Here's Hyperstrike, my main Inv/SS as he exists right now.
About the only things that slows him down are strings of lucky hits, auto-hit stuff (like crap patches), and fears. None of which you, as a player, have any control over whatsoever.

Running +0x8 with bosses against Carnies is pretty much cake. Cranking to +2 and it becomes iffier. The bosses will hit you for psi damage more regularly. At +4 it becomes challenging as all that psi hits you like a truck. But hey, this is what an occasional purple defense inspie is for.

But that's not gaming on the portable device. That's gaming on your computer through what is essentially a remote desktop or screen-scraping session.

What becomes a problem is latency and proper connection for input devices, as CoH isn't very touchscreen-oriented.

Also, though CoH doesn't really have any active, PunkBuster-type anti cheatcode provisions in it, how would something like that differentiate between a remote control session and a bot?
  5. Basically, current phones don't really have enough power to support running something like CoH on them. They can be tethered to a regular laptop or workstation and act as an internet connection for the game. But actually playing the game on the phone?

    No. Uh uh.

If the devs were of a mind (and the last Player Summit indicated they aren't), they'd have to basically build a specialty client JUST for each given type of phone.

They have enough problems just supporting Mac as it is. They simply don't have the resources or partnerships to accomplish something like this in any sort of timeframe you could call reasonable.

Moreover, there'd have to be some major changes in the game interface to make it small form-factor friendly. This would probably result in a loss of functionality on the PC users' end.

Give it another 8 years. Then see where mobile devices are.

  8. As to "can't afford". Well, if you're buying another machine, and nothing it wrong with this one (outside of gaming), you honestly *can* afford to run both.

Keep the laptop for work purposes and possibly build a gaming desktop.

As Gaia points out, it'd probably work out cheaper in the long run.
  9. Well, with the preponderance of ATT, Mission TP and Team Transporter, Doc Quitenearlyforever TFs don't take quite so long anymore.

I ran one shortly after TT hit the market. 4:30. Still a hefty time investment, and we had one numbnuts join and bail six missions in. But, overall, not nearly the mega-painfest they have been.

What do all those other games have in common that CoH doesn't share in?

    DirectX.

CoH is an old, somewhat apathetically optimized OpenGL game. The portions of driver code used to run the game are different and in some cases, not as heavily optimized.

It stresses your system differently than a DirectX game does.

    Quote:
They are newer games, potentially more demanding I would of thought.
    Yes and no.

DX has a lot of nice little hacks and "performance optimizations" that are essentially low level system calls that bypass certain subsystems for greater performance.

OGL pretty much forces you to use the OGL method of rendering. This way OGL, nominally, maintains platform neutrality. Plus, OGL is extensible. If you don't have a function in OGL that does what you need it to do, you can write yourself a module that does and tack the calls on.

Yes, this is still less ideal than being able to get it on your own like every other teleport beacon, but...
Actually, I've done single-team ship raids. And, while they're not as renumerative as multi-team raids, they're actually quite doable nowadays with Incarnate powers. The last one I did netted me something like 400 VMs. We even got the GM and the 2 merits by abusing league mode and flipping individuals to their own teams for the bombs phase.

Doesn't actually belong here. But Union and Defiant are the historical UK servers. So if you're looking for the main body of people who're on at the same time you are, those are the two to hit first.

Nowadays *all* of the servers are in English, so it honestly doesn't matter where you go.

    Super Stunners

Yeah. I never quite "got" why an entire team would pile on one of them, beat them down, then get "offended" when it rezzed with maximum health and they lost a bunch of endurance.

Playing toons with knockback, I've had to actively remind teammates NOT to chase them while I blast them out of range and leave them to stay dead. Nobody in range = no rez.
  22. I agree with the "just do a ship raid" sentiment.
They're easy, relatively quick and with a couple competent teams, can result in a slew of Vanguard merits. A "crummy" raid can yield 4-500, a decent raid 600-ish. And a very successful one with a full zone worth of people and massively overlapped Judgements, etc can result in raids of upwards of 1000 VMs.

It's going to take me a few months to get together the cash to replace it,given current circumstances, but I will - WILL - be back.

Can anyone recommend a half-decent,reasonably priced, extremely reliable and durable gaming *laptop* - as I can't afford to run two machines and will need to work on site? This one's lasted me since March 2010...
It's probably better to ask once you get the dosh together to actually buy the laptop.

Right now we want to see what can be done about making sure the current one remains functional. I'm running on a T61P that's now about 4-5 years old with no overheating problems. Why? I keep it clean. Well, that and it's a secondary machine.

First off Dream, when was the last time you blasted the thing out with a can of compressed air? Don't simply try this with the laptop sitting in the usual position. Blast it out that way for sure. But turn it on its side and blast out the various air intakes, etc. Then turn it upside down and repeat, then on its other side and repeat, etc. This way, if you have a fuzzball in there you stand the maximum chance of dislodging/destroying it.

Second, are you sure the interior fans are working? Put a hand near one of the vents after it's been up a while. You you feel warm air moving?

Third, Are you playing with the laptop just plunked down on whatever available surface there is? Or are you getting it up off the "desktop" so there's better airflow?

Not saying you need one of those fan-laden laptop coolers (though those never hurt), but just something to get it off whatever surface there is. After a while, that surface just becomes one giant heatsink, and depending on the surface, can artificially heat up your laptop.

Something as simple as an ergonomic laptop travel stand can help keep the temperature down.

I actually use one of these with my laptop and have few thermal issues.

Fourth, Another thing you could do to reduce power consumption and thermal load is replace your hard drive with an SSD. And, on top of the above benefits, your disk-related operations get a gigantic kick in the pants (17 second boot times and faster map loads anyone?)

While #4 is probably your most expensive option, all four of them together are still significantly cheaper than purchasing a new laptop. I'd urge you to do the first two immediately. Try #3 for a cheap "fix" and #4 if you have the spare dosh (and through the fact that you could move the SSD to a new laptop if it doesn't help).
