We're talking about a whole different level of lazy. What you described doing isn't lazy marketeering.

We're talking about people who apparently feel they should simply be GIVEN purples. Because...well...they did the devs a "favor" and logged in.

Seriously though (well, more seriously than I was being), this is supposed to be a game. You know, FUN. The kind of abuse coming across in this rep system detract from this. Sometimes drastically.

What's more, it's discouragement from participating in the online community here. As niche as the forumite community is, anything that is detrimental to community participation should raise a warning flag for the mods.

Community, forumite or otherwise, is one of the things that KEEPS this game going, five-plus years and more after it's release.

    Here here!

Howabout we go a bit closer to home than the "I know a guy". Not casting aspersions, just it's always easy to claim "I know a guy". So, without further ado, I present:

    Me.

I have a level 19 Brute who's currently sitting on over six MILLION in inf. How? Marketing. He's been played a grand total of three DAYS (since creation, not total play time).

I also have an tanker that got his start during the DXP weekend and had about 4 days of play. He's at 25 and similarly sitting on about 6 mil. Now imagine what I could do by playing them for several months.

And I'm not talking about spending hours and hours in the market. I log in, hit the market, clear out my bids, place new ones and put up anything I still have for sale. Then I go kick butt until something fills up. I then head back to the market, rinse and repeat.

I'm frugal with my enhancers (been leaving them go until I can attempt to combine them with the next level up), I haven't IO'ed yet (waiting until around 30-32 before I start).

By the time these guys hits 50, they're going to be able to just do outright buys of anything they want, save purple SETS (though with the luck of the drop, you never know).

Again, I'm a frigging LAZY marketeer compared to some of these guys. So if I can have sub-20's and early 20's rolling in inf in under a week, ANYONE can.

Christ...I sound like a frickin' infomerical.

I've been playing around with brutes a bit. On a couple off-Protector brutes, I've gone +1x0(x1), and found it mostly survivable (though certain enemy types just wreck me). On a new SS/Inv that I started on-protector I was running +0x3 and was just getting wrecked. So, right now (pre-stamina), I'm running +0x2. My main problem is just running out of End. Currently he's at 19 though, so that problem is almost over.

And his damage output. DEAR FLIPPING GOD! Once I don't have to carry quite so many blues, I'll probably be cranking him to +0x4 (and shortly arrive at 50). He's already sitting on over 6 million due to some judicious marketing.
  9. Sorry about diving in on this so late. Most of the advice is fairly correct. Father Xmas' post is pretty much dead in the black.

One SMALL disagreement on a newer video card without replacing the system. It's a practical "gotcha", rather than a technical or performance-related one.

MEASURE your case BEFORE purchasing an expensive new video card. I've personally run into setups that were "technically" able to fit a card. HOWEVER, it meant removal of internal components (like fans, etc). Or where hardware on the motherboard itself actively prevented it (perpendicular-mount SATA headers and chipset coolers are notorious for this).

Reason: A lot of these new cards are double-width, due to the extensive cooling systems bolted onto the side. Moreover, these cards run quite long and wide.

For reference. Most of the cards have these approximate measurements:

    Width: 1.5 inches (3.81 cm)
Depth (Height): 4.4 inches (11.176 cm)
    Length: 10.5 inches (26.67 cm)
Nominal height of the top of the PCI-E connector from the board face (the clearance you'll need components in front of the slot to be under): .44 inches (11.25 mm)

Also, if a chip is supported by your motherboard, even if the "FSB" speed is higher, in most cases for the last several years, the FSB and memory clock have been decoupled. Performance takes a small hit, but nothing horrendous (as older Single-Channel Single Data-Rate SDRAM did). In short, you can keep your DDR2 800 memory, you simply won't get maximum performance out if it.

    Rent A NPC

With the number of temp powers out there and already available for pets, I'm not really sure this is warranted.

Also, does this "bought" sidekick simply respawn at the end of the 90-120 second period after death? Or do they actually run back from the entrance to the map? And what happens if you're ghosting?

Sorry, but, even being almost untruthfully kind, most of the pet AI in the game is quite DUMB. All you'd see in such a situation is a bunch of "Your hench-hero was killed (again)" in the log.

No. It's been explained before. All that means is they'd have to rebalance the enemies and player powers. In the end, it's be the same old thing, just with a bigger number, and a lot of people ticked off because their powers got nerfed for such a silly reason.

Either that, or it would create a level-locked zone that nobody but the vets would be in, pulling people out of the rest of the zones and contributing even more to the illusion that "nobody is on".

Neither of which is going to help retention or bring in new players.

    I was too busy leveling.
Heh. I know guys who out-earned my "paltry sum" on the market just by farming and drops. And I probably could have done the same. However there are two considerations.

I try to avoid my 50's during DXP weekends (as part of the point is the DXP). I also avoid toons that I'm specifically taking through game content and "farming" arc merits.

I wanted to see how well my "scheme" worked.

Outside of a couple costly fat-finger mistakes (tacking an extra zero on to salvage bought for an auxiliary round of crafting, accidentally buying one of the IO's I'm putting up for sale as I'm price-checking and forgot to switch back to the sales line, all accounted for in the conversion from gross to net), it didn't do too badly.

I didn't exactly take a bath on Accs and Dams (lots of competition there), but I didn't make a whole lot. The various EndMod/Red and recharge IOs were more lucrative. Heals were so-so. The Defense IOs were really where it was at for me this weekend though (40-60K crafting+salvage and selling for 500K-1M? PLEASE?)

Considering the sale prices, I was stunned (COMPLETELY) that the salvage for said IOs stayed as low as it did Blue-side (Red-side, some of the components were nearly cleaned out and going for 125K each). I re-crafted Defense IOs (L30) four times this weekend and my salvage cost was never more than my crafting cost. All save for one of those fat-finger mistakes where I accidentally typed one zero too many. Even there, I still made 200% profit or better.

Yeah. I noticed this too. Only one of the toons I played this weekend was actually one of my marketers. And he'd been cleaned out before I took him for a spin. He pulled down another couple million (at L38) in salvage and drops alone. One toon I played wound up with 1.1 million (redside) from just Rune and Alchemical silver drops.

    Quote:
The only meaningful inf I made 'on purpose' was flipping some low-level Blessing of the Zephyr -KBs. Put in a bunch of bids a few weeks back, picked up the winners and re-listed them at 100m each for 2xp.

They sold fast enough that I'm probably should have bumped them up even more... =P
    Heh. Nice.
  19. Started with a base investment of 8 million in salvage and crafting costs.
Put my Field Crafter to work crafting commons. Started with a spread of commons in Acc, Damage, EndMod, EndRed, Defense Buff, and Recharge. Had a couple odds out there as I used the opportunity to scrub my base of all the odds-n-ends salvage that was just cluttering the bins and costing prestige.

Loaded in Wednesday night across 7 toons (approximately 120 market slots) and priced exorbitantly when there was little to no competition.
None of the toons save my crafter had more than 3 million on them when I started.

I would then check twice a day. Once in the morning, once in the evening.

At close of business on Monday evening, none of the toons had less than 24 million on them. Net (after salvage, crafting, market costs), 171 million (rounded down to the nearest million).

83 million alone came from L30 defense IOs. If you're one of those uber-impatient people who paid 800K-1M for an L30 Defense IO this weekend, chances are pretty good that the money came to me.

    Thank you.

    Thankyouthankyouthankyou! </PenelopeYin>

Now, this is small peanuts compared to the quantity of inf moved by some of you guys here (hence my "I am the Diet Coke of Ebil" post over the weekend). Still, it represents 2137.5% profit off an artificially limited initial investment. If I actually had a heart, this would do it good. The shriveled little thing might even attempt to beat once or twice and pop out a couple clots of dried blood.

So, I ask (if you're willing to talk about it), what did you do in the great Market PVP Arena this wekeend and how profitable was it for you?
  20. Okay, levels are more or less approximate. Pretty sure, but I might be under by one level or so.

I have two level pacts, one on Freedom, one on Virtue.

    Freedom:
    • Fire/Stone Brute, 21-28
    Virtue:
    • Ill/Ice Troller, 15-28
    Protector (Home):
    • MA/WP Scrapper: 31-38
    • PB: 35-37
    • Ice/Ice Tank: Brand New to 25
    • Sonic/Traps Corruptor: Brand New to 6 (All in the last hour of DXP)

    On the marketeering front:

Made a killing off an an small 7-digit investment in common IOs and my Field Crafter toon.
If you spent 500, 800, or 1 million on an L30 Defense Buff Hero Side (with crafting and salvage costs, that's over 900, 1500, and 1900% profit margin respectively) , chances are you paid out the money to me. Made over 83 million just from Defense Buffs. Made approximately 171 million total for the weekend.

    On the badge front:
    • Got six alts I was using to sell my IOs their Enhancer badge and at least one quantity-based marketing badge each (a couple got two).
    • Picked up Fabricator on my Field Crafter toon.
    • My Scrapper picked up the Manticore TF (and got to see the L40 PP bug first hand..ow) and the Tank Smasher badges as well as the Midnighter badges.
    • My Ill/Ice Troller picked up Shrouded, Sensation, and the one for fighting Psychic Babbage (plus a few I may misremember)
    • My Ice/Ice Tank picked up the Midnighter badges and the one for fighting the Kraken.
    • My PB got Centurion during a failed ITF (one of our main damage dealers fell off in the first mission and never came back). We just steamrolled everything up until we got thumped HARD at the console (whittled it down by nanometers). And were on our way to thumping Romulus, but couldn't handle fighting him AND the ambushes AND the ridiculous Nictus spawns.
Had something similar happen with my scrapper when I picked up a L50 team for the "Save the World" mission (Hro'Dtoz and Nemesis). We whupped up on the Rikti, but the ambushes murdalized us for Nemesis.
We'd get him chopped down to 25%, an ambush would come in, and we'd wipe. Mainly we'd lost three of our team (including our debuffer) and since it was 4 AM, getting more people to come help was tough.
    • Plus the assorted damage badges, wealth badges, exploration badges, etc.

    On the teaming front:

My Ice/Ice spent most of his time solo. I was playing him while at work and had to stop periodically. To make up for this I had him running +0x4, and was making 3 levels every 2 missions in the upper levels.

Just about everything else was teamed.

    On the fun front:
Save for failing the aforementioned failed missions/TFs, and one instance where an L50 with a bunch of lowbies kept taking Malta missions (then took a Malta+Carnies mission), I had a friggin blast! I was absolutely inundated with team invites all weekend. Didn't have to go looking even once.

All I can say is that I'm glad it isn't like this all the time. If it were, I'd lose my job due to getting addicted to the game!

Normally I get two or three invites a day on Protector. I was just flooded this weekend (though a couple times I had to solo due to being at work).

And if that's what you're expecting for the norm for teaming (especially post-SSK), you're pretty much boned.

Simply stating "people are leaving the game" with no qualifiers is just unsupported *DOOOOOOOM*. If you can SHOW that significantly more people are leaving the game than coming in, then you have something to worry about. But, you cannot show that. Your observations of server population are somewhat meaningless. Why? Because you're not everywhere on the server and you don't have access to some mysterious panopticon giving you hard numbers on who's actually on the server and who's hidden.
