  1. Hey BaBs.

Now that we have a walking animation, can we do away with some of the rooting in other powers that really DON'T require rooting? Or at least reduce the movement supression a bit?

Because hitting someone and going "ONE mississippi TWO mississippi THREE mississippi FOUR mississi...I CAN MOVE!" sucks.

However, I've migrated myself, forcibly, to Windows 7 and Office 2007 at work to force myself to deal with it. So far, most of the Win7 experience has been remarkably pain-free (after remembering that I need to use "Run as Administrator" to install stuff without hassle). I still haven't touched Office 2007 much.

I even migrated CoH over to the box to test it. My only issue was having to move back to a 4:3 screen as opposed to 16:9.

Even my boss, who stayed on Win98 until 2005 did a Win7 install on her desktop and is mostly happy with it so far (a couple of our programs don't work right, but some of those are EXTREME legacy).

Then there's Windows ME -> No Computer.

    UPGRADE!

Just wondering because I thought it would be kinda cool to sometimes knock them down, and every so often send them flying. Seems thematically appropriate to me.
AFAIK, you'd just gain an extra chance of KD, not convert it to KB.

Anyone who switches platforms and simply ***umes that their depended-upon software packages will follow them is a two-legged donkey.

That being said, if you're buying a Mac to put Windows on, you're essentially just paid a premium to get a Wintel machine with a nice little alternative GUI system (like the laptops that boot up into DVD-player only mode).

Ah. Smug superiority. The number one failing in both the Mac and Linux camps. And this is said as someone who's been using Linux for longer than some of our player base has been alive.

    Quote:
Obviously, the original poster has upgraded.
Incorrect. They have chosen an alternative platform.

    Quote:
However, there are caveats with upgrades. Sometimes software built against legacy platforms won't work, and so yes, sometimes it's worth it to have a legacy platform around to continue to use legacy code.
Unfortunately you're wrong. As much as you may like it, Windows isn't a legacy platform. Legacy implies that the software you're talking about is no longer supported. And with Windows that just ain't the case.

    Quote:
There are also some cases where some programs are better left to a legacy platform. I happen to be of the opinion that tools like MIDS are among them. I don't like MIDS for a variety of reasons. It's one thing to look at a list of numbers and think "that looks good." It's entirely another thing to actually put those numbers into realistic play. MIDS can tell you everything there is to know about the raw numbers, but it won't tell you one lick about how an avatar plays. It won't tell you what the natural strengths or weaknesses are. It won't tell you what enemies you'll face, nor how to switch up your playing style for the needs of a team. It won't tell you how long you'll have to farm or how many TF's you'll have to run to afford the IO sets you want. It won't tell you what's actually available.
It's only a build/enhancement statistics analysis package. It's not an enemy comparison package.

    Quote:
For these and many other reasons, I don't use MIDS, and I'd have a hard time justifying anybody spending time to port the underlying code to an alternative operating system base, much less maintaining the current lists of enhancement sets.
    Fixed that for you.

    Quote:
But... that's just me. Obviously some people find value in the tool. I'm not one of those people.
Didn't buy a copy of Windows to dual-boot eh?

This is not the fault of the people in charge of the Mids project. They are working with what they have. If you want to donate time, money, hardware, and programming expertise to make it a truly cross-platform tool, you're more than welcome to.

    Quote:
Cohplanner works alright I suppose, but its missing half the PvP IO sets. And PvP builds are the only time that I need to use a mids type program.
What do you want for free? Realistically, the install-base of Mac-using CoH players is quite small (probably even smaller than the market-based Mac-to-Wintel PC ratio). Should the developers pull off improving their existing, working project that reaches hundred (or thousands) of players to work on a parallel project for a few dozen?

  15. Okay here's a quick one-off:

    A couple assumptions:

    1. You wanted a COMPLETE system and weren't reusing ANYTHING from your old setup. So I quoted keyboard, mouse, and monitor too.
    2. You're buying NOW, not a couple months down the road. As such, the 5870 isn't really available right now. So I went with a GTX 285.

Now for a few wheres and whyfors.

Plextor Optical: Always had good luck with Plextor. Very quiet, fast drives and rarely have problems with them (have an Plextor CD burner that's over 8 years old still churning away in one of my systems). Some of the other drives, like the Lite-Ons, while they're okay, tend to be somewhat noisy. Yeah, the Plextor is almost twice the price. You get what you pay for.

RC-690 Case: I currently own this case. Nice and roomy (though if you don't care for larger cases, this might be a turn-off. Lots of room for fans. And assembly was stupid-fast. A breath of fresh air after dealing with Antec Sonata cases (quiet but VERY tight quarters) for several years.

Western Digital 1GB Drives (Matched): Drive space is dirt cheap nowadays. The drives spec'ed are decent drives. I've always had very good luck with WD. YMMV though.

Samsumg LCD: These are very decent monitors for the money. I've put them in on several clients. There's a small amount of bleed at the top, but it's only really noticeable when the screen is dead-black. Thing is, a lot of monitors have the same issue. Most of the ones I've come across that don't are far more expensive.

EVGA Superclocked GTX 285: As I said, the 5870 isn't generally available (yet). Also, I still don't quite trust ATI (even though they've gotten better since the AMD merger, there are still things I don't care for in their products, drivers, and some niggling little distrust in both ATI and AMD from being burned a few times too often).

    PSU: Decent PSU. 'nuff said.

Keyboard and Mouse: I use 'em. Again, buy what you prefer. There's still a LOT of wiggle room in this budget.

Memory: Went with 6GB. I've been using G.Skill for about 3 years now. I've had exactly ZERO problems with their memory. I spec'ed out the lowest latency stuff. If you feel the need to double the amount of memory, go with the regular latency stuff, as most boards won't run a full complement in lowest latency.

Motherboard: I trust Asus. Their boards are solid. They work. They may not be THE highest-performance boards extant. But I prefer stability to top-end speed.

i7 9 series: YES, the 8 series is cheaper. The 9 series still outperforms it clock for clock. If you're going to step down to the 8 series, then yeah. Go with the 860 (as the 870 is only $40 cheaper).

CPU HSF: Decent HSF. Relatively quiet and has decent thermal performance.

Extra case fans: The base case itself only comes with a couple fans. Add a few more of these low-RPM case fans to move a decent amount of air through.

Again, this is just a suggestion and a bunch of my opinions. Make your own decisions.

    TF's etc, like lvl54 ITF's etc etc.
I'd recommend three-slotting recharge IO's in the following powers.

    Rage
    Dull Pain
    Hasten
    Conserve Power

Rage will essentially be perma. You'll have nice windows of double-rage and (with speed boosters on your team, you'll even have times you're tripled).
DP will be up frequently (though most of the time you shouldn't need it)
Hasten won't be perma, but it'll be up so often that you shouldn't notice.
Conserve Power will not be perma, but will be up frequently enough to cover for times when your End bar is running low.

Just stick Hasten on auto and fuggetaboutit.

Also, consider replacing Hurl with Laser Beam Eyes. While overall damage is significantly lower, LBE has the following going for it:

    1. Lower End cost
    2. Lower Recharge time
    3. Lower cast time
    4. Has a -Def component (compared to the -Fly component on Hurl)
Here's a look at the build for my Def-capped at 30 build.
Note: There are no purples on there at the moment. KO Blow and FS are slotted for them (eventually), but right now they're both slotted with common IOs as such: 1x Acc, 3x Dam, 1x EndRed

    Thank you,
Check out the link provided by Aett. It leads to Call Me Awesome's guide on softcapping an Invuln tanker. You'll see multiple builds in there, including a couple of mine, which are actually designed to be softcapped down to L30.

It's not cheap. You're probably looking at several hundred million total to cap nowadays. But, with purpled toons going in the multiple BILLIONS, it's a much less expensive proposition.

If you get a new router, you don't necessarily have to get a new wireless adapter for your machine. If you're running Wireless G, you're fine for a router set up for Wireless N. You simply won't be able to take advantage of the multi-channel aspect of Wireless N (but will still get G-speeds).

And a big thanks to all who provided feedback!

Well, looking at the system you linked to. I'd take pretty much the default options. Upgrade the video card and add a second hard drive.

If you need a monitor, tack that on too. The default offering is actually pretty decent right from the get-go.

If you really want to spend more than $1500-1600, you can go nuts.

About my only advice is to avoid the paid-for "factory overclocking".

Also, here's a couple promo codes that actually appear to work:

REPEAT (Good for 5% (about $70 in the base config) off)
    twitter (Good for $25 off)
    myspace (Good for $30 off)

    (Hint: Use REPEAT)
