Quote:It's "cheap" (and in some cases, more effective) in comparison to someone with an extreme recharge build and 5 sets of purples loaded on.Now, granted, it's not like it's a terrible deal for a softcap build's benefits, but what calling it cheap communicates to me is "this guy is speaking a different language than I am"
But hey, everyone has 3-50 (yes, fifty) billion inf to blow on every character, right? Right?
-
Quote:The problem is, you seem to be considering this completely independently of the difficulty settings.
However, this still leaves us with the problem that the game's content can be completely trivialized by all ATs.
For the most part, the game IS trivial at +0/x0/NoBoss. SO/IO/whatever.
However, +4/x8/Bosses/AV is trivial for NOBODY. Even the super-tricked scrappers/tanks/etc will admit that running at these settings isn't "easy".
Or you let all the weak sisters run at -1/x1 and all the people who have a desire to be challenged will run at higher settings.Quote:The fix to that is to build content to the power level, which leaves SO characters in the dust. Or you can nerf, which would cause an ED sized uproar. Or you can accept that IO using characters can never be challenged by the content. -
Quote:Missing the point.Technically not true, as resistance debuffs do exist (but are rare, and resisted by resistance)
With resistance, damage reduction is dependable. It can be REDUCED through debuffs, but it's still functioning.
With defense, you're at the mercy of a random roll. Granted, you can heavily weight that random roll in your favor, but you still have exactly zero control beyond that. -
Quote:Correct:Not only that, but even a ranged softcap blaster can get hit by a single melee attack that does -def and the whole thing comes crashing down.
EDIT TO ADD:
My take on the whole thing: Defense is easy to obtain because of its fickle nature. If you had 90% resistance, that resistance is always there. Every single hit will be reduced to almost nothing. With 45% defense, almost nothing will hit you, but the hits that do get through hurt a lot. Beyond that is the chance that two massive hits happen in short succession that kill you.
With resistance, there is a well defined line of what you can handle. With defense, the line is blurry, and the RNG is what kills you.
Resistance = Sure Thing
Defense = Well-Loaded Craps Shoot -
Do you really want to be trying to take down someone who's defense numbers, even with you having SCADS of +To Hit, mean you're still only hitting at 5%?
Like a defense-capped Inv/* tank sitting someplace near the 50% defense range with nobody near him? -
Bah! Queen said it better. I shall paraphrase:
I want it all!
I want it all!
I WANT IT ALL!
AND I WANT IT NAO!

Quote:Not much happened last night with the Frads, I was on with my Frad and so was Greased Wheels, we waited around for a bit and when no one else showed up I switched to my main MLC toons and we ran some story archs in Founders...
Yeah. Sorry. As I said yesterday, the parents are in town and my name is currently changed to "Manuel Labor".
If it came down to a choice of the wrath of 7 other F-Rads or the wrath of Hyperstrike's Mom, the F-Rads are going to lose. Every time.
Look up the term "unspeakable horror", and there's a picture of my mom putting the smackdown on Chuck Norris.

Quote:For those still looking to do Fire/Rads I'll pick up the slack on Monday. My computer is down, so I am taking the opportunity to move some computers around, fix up my network, and restart my computers to run Win 7. So I will not be getting on the fire/rads (or any CoX) for 2 or 3 weeks. This means I will miss the next couple of mondays running of the fire/rads. Good luck on the burning for those that can make it, and good marketeering to all.

Okay, to be honest, I'd pay for a lifetime sub too. But then, I'm a cheap *AHEM* too. It's not going to happen though.
However, lifetime subs are what some games do right at release to build up cash so they can repay their startup expenditures or replenish their coffers so the game can keep running. It's also used by outfits that don't plan on being around long.
And while they may be a good deal for those who play longer than a year or so, they're a TERRIBLE loss for the company if the game survives. Essentially every month beyond (Lifetime Sub Amount divided by monthly sub amount = #) is lost revenue. What they (or at least Cryptic) is counting on is the same thing gyms count on. You lay out all this cash, play for a short time, then don't come back again. Except that, with a lifetime membership, if someone comes back in 2 years and plays again, that's money lost, since they can't charge these people.
- The game isn't new. Development costs have been sunk and amortized into oblivion for some time now.
- Neither Paragon or NCSoft are hurting for cash so bad that this would make sense.
- Doing so now would send a message that there was massive trouble with the game, which would probably trigger an exodus, offsetting any big-budget windfall.
- It'd probably raise all sorts of other problems (social issues, not technical) that would also probably trigger groups of people to leave the game.
As such, I can't really throw support behind this idea, as appealing to my pocketbook as it might be... -

Quote:Once we get the prestige up a bit, it'll get there. Redside is a snap to get a fully functional base for.Nice work on the base, Hype! Redside, we ain't so smanshy, but we are functional.
I'm pretty much good any day of the week. This is the last week the parents are in town so most of my obligations of time and strong back (but mostly tech support for the mother's new computer) are done after tomorrow.Quote:I'd like to propose a Katie run this week, as I'd like to get the accolade. My only week day that I'd be available at a decent hour would be Friday, so was thinking maybe 7 pm Eastern time. Any interest? -
Actually, from statements made further down it IS. I know it sounds like I'm being cocky and know-it-all here but I'm not.
Believe it or not, that's low-level gameplay. It's more about learning to use the base effects in powers to prep you for the more potent powers that start coming into play in the 20's and 30's. Right now you have gaping holes in your attack chain. These do, eventually fill in.Quote:I like the characters i've created. It's the fact the powers are largely samey and not terribly complimentary. There really is not much synergy and it's a little shallow.
At lower levels, holds, immobilize powers, and stuns all seem superficially similar. As you progress, you learn about effect-stacking (as higher-level enemies start gaining status protections). So one power that drops a Mag 3 Hold on someone may or may not affect them. But follow them up with another power that does the same, and another that drops a Mag 2 and your powers stack to overcome his resistance (also doing damage in the interim).Quote:I have a Dominator with thorn plant powers and they don't really gel and some of them are jhust the same thing: two abilities that trap the opponent are pretty much identical.
Again, at low levels, enhancements ARE trivial. Training Origin effects are almost (but not quite) pointless. Dual Origin effects are more potent. Single Origin effects are more potent still. Plus you have Invention Origin (which also scale by level). At high levels they provide better single-aspect effects than SOs, and many of the sets have pieces that improve multiple aspects simultaneously. With some abilities it's possible to nearly double two or more aspects of a power, while retaining modest improvements in still other aspects.Quote:Furthermore, beyond enhancements (which only really give a little boost to your abilities), there is nothing else.
Because it's not needed. The effects of many powers scale with level. Furthermore, with the Enhancement and Invention systems and the choices made possible by them, it's quite possible that while an individual power won't be COMPLETELY unique, your specific choices in overall powers+enhancements=effect will be.Quote:There's no talent point system or means to further customise your stuff.
You want deep? Head into the one of the AT-specific forums with a speculative build out of the Mids' Hero Designer. Then let them go to town on it. You'll get all the deep you can handle (a tips on putting together a VERY efficacious build to boot).Quote:Don't get me wrong; it's not bad by any means, it's just not terribly deep.
Again, we suggest you give the US version a try (if you're terribly concerned about population, go to Freedom or Virtue).Quote:This may well be mitigated when you are playing in a group, but without players that's not an option.
Also, explore the server-specific forums and ask about community gathering points in channels (though this will be limited by your trial status). Finding these community areas isn't rocket science, but asking up-front about them would probably make your endeavor easier.
Again, some of this may be that you're on the EU servers. Some of it may be that you're on at a very lean time of day. Some of it may simply be that a majority of the population are active in missions or hiding.Quote:The areas are totally devoid of other players.
Again, finding the community channels that are active will cut down on your need to search for people.
Reinstalling for the US version isn't as horrific as the initial download is. The localization files are relatively tiny compared to the sound and texture files (a couple megs).Quote:I'm not reainstalling and starting all over again just to play on US servers.
People are playing this game from the UK. Why not ask THEM what playing the US shards is like? Don't assume it's going to be bad simply because you're a few thousand miles from your server. This is NOT a "twitch" game for the most part. So if your ping isn't absolute rock-botton single-digits, it's no biggie.Quote:If no one in the UK/EU is playing on local servers then that's just too bad. If the game is more popular in the states then fine. But i'm not mucking around on the offchance it won't have lag problems (because it will). -
Quote:The tanker Inherent, GauntletI always thought Tank's attacks contained a Taunt component in similar threat level as the power Taunt (same with taunt auras vs. taunt), but a SG mate states otherwise. Since neither of us are 100% sure and are only using personal experience to state our facts...we could use some confirmation from the community.
When fighting an AV or multiple, does punchvoke and Taunt Auras (from tanks) "taunt" the AV or does the player have to use the power [Taunt] in order to keep the aggro of the AV?
As to whether or not it's weaker than Taunt/Provoke/etc, I can't answer that. I haven't really run any tests to see if someone I grab with Punchvoke can be torn off by an actual taunt power.Quote:Each time a Tanker attacks, he enrages the target, and those around him, enticing them to attack the Tanker. Each punch continues to provoke your enemies and allows the Tanker to do what he does best. Gauntlet -- also referred to as "PunchVoke" -- causes the Tanker's AoE attacks and auras to taunt every PvE enemy they affect. Their single-target attacks taunt the enemy hit and up to four more around it. Gauntlet has reduced chances of affecting exceptionally high-rank foes like Giant Monsters, and even worse chances of affecting other players in PvP. -
Quote:Just what WOULD an SS assassin strike look like?I'd start waiting on Proliferation. What other sets can we get that don't have AoE? Super Strength? I guess Stone Melee but then we'd have to get Stone Armor too >_>
Random thug just standing there minding his own business (or minding his boss' Business) and a fist emerges from his chest with his still-beating heart rocketing out to splatter on a wall across the street... -

Quote:There's also the version of Tanker/Scrapper stealth where you just kill everything between you and the objective.Looking over the Wiki it lacks Tanker Stealth!

(Using a tanker to "stealth" a mission to the end by simply ignoring the mobs attacking you and walking past while they try to stop you with their puny attacks)
Ok, it calls that "Ghetto Ghosting", still I think Tanker Stealth is a better term

Dead men (or whatever) tell no tales.
So it's kinda like you were invisible. Who's left to argue with you?
-
I propose thusly:
Create a "H3@L0R" Epic AT.
You spawn in as an L1, destructible Oranbega green crystal with "hardcore Death = Delete" rules automatically applied.
Note not just YOUR death, but a death by ANYONE, teamed with you or otherwise on any of the shards. EVER. INCLUDING NPCs.
Why? Because if someone dies/gets defeated, you've failed in your job as a H3@L0R and deserve nothing more!
Unless you agree with this, it has to stay /unsigned.
