Various types of Solar have lots of pollution factored in during manufacturing.
Wind affects the ecology of an area, killing birds and bats. They also introduce a lot of noise pollution into the area. Again, pollution is produced, just concentrated during manufacture. There's also the large footprint of wind farms as there are no efficiencies gained by scale.
Hydro affects the ecology (altered water tables, can interfere with fish populations, etc). Hydro can have detrimental effects on local geology as well (the creation of Hoover Dam has touched off earthquakes in the area as the bedrock underneath is compressed. Plus, concrete (which is what most of these dams are made up of, gives off CO2 as it cures. Think about millions of tons of concrete. -
Newchemicals has pretty much said everything I would.
As long as you don't expect an Ultra Mode Monster, you should be fine. -
Gonna comment on your original build. Know you've already made changes. So bear with me.
Your resistance armors are all grossly overslotted (70-90% slotting when best case you get 60%).
You're running Medicine pool ONLY because you haven't built for defense.
Do yourself a favor and build for defense and you won't NEED the Medicine pool. You can put them to worthwhile powers.
Why in the name of all that is SS did you take Focused Accuracy?
You have Rage! RAGE DAMMIT! RRRRRAAAAAAGGGGGEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyhow, you're going to spend a good chunk of your time Rage-doubled. So you REALLY aren't in need of the +ToHit from FA.
You have Hurl underslotted to near uselessness.
In RTTC, Hami-Os are your bestest bud. Yes, you lose prospective set bonuses. But you basically floor endurance consumption and cap healing.
Fly: If you tell me it's "thematic", I'm going to have to flagellate you with a wet noodle.
Combat Jumping. Take it, love it. Get by with Super Jump and jetpacks.
Here's my rework of your build. It could be tweaked tighter. But I'd need to rework power selection order to tweak it.
It's not QUITE as durable as AF's (but, unlike him, I've not tossed on an Agility Alpha yet), but as noted, I haven't basically done a complete rework on it. -
Well. Ensconced safely at work.
I survived the karaoke! YAY!
Great party! And Zwill didn't thrash me for busting his balls!
BONUS!
Hopefully it won't be another 2-3 years before I can make it back again. -
Quote:No. But I happen to know, personally, at least two. And both of them are BattleTech heads. I've heard this argument many MANY times.oh and none of you are nuclear physicists...so stop nerd raging.seriously
If I don't stand up and take a whack at "nuclear = bomb" they'll do horrific things to me.
Like transcribe a hoary old physics tract into binary... -
Quote:It's interesting the reactions and thoughts people are having in the aftermath of this event; with all deference to Forbin, I can't advocate any retribution as a means of punishment to this person for a couple of important reasons. The first being my very best friend in the world is mentally ill, and I've seen firsthand and come to understand how much an imagined reality is for someone suffering it.
I have to stress here that I'm not condoning or excusing what happened, but simply saying that if this is the case, then that's something for a professional to judge, not us.
Secondly, I'm not an eye for an eye person. My personal belief is that I am not qualified nor of a moral position to determine if someone should live or die based on their crimes. I'm old enough to understand that there is true evil in the world and it should be opposed, but I am not someone who should be allowed to make judgements on another individual.
What I have come to start to question in regards to movies like this and the 'action genre' is something I discussed with a good friend only a couple of hours ago, and that is our desensitised reactions to violence and what we take from it. Of course my friend perceptively said 'just like with the Christians and the lions,' and I took that very salient point on board.
We're not sitting in crowds baying for blood from real people, but an event like this blurs an already thin line between entertainment and reality. I think Mr. Nolan is a very intelligent and thoughtful filmmaker, but it may be that in drawing a portrait of a superhero in the real world, our acceptance of that being in the real world has become that much easier. This isn't a criticism as such, but for me at least it's something that I think I should consider when things are presented to me as entertainment.
I firmly fall into the Golden and Silver Ages of the heroes I prefer, because without that sense of moral purpose and responsibility, without that essential compassion and empathy for another human being, a hero can just as easily be a villain. It's why I embraced the Avengers so wholeheartedly. It's why the heroes I play in this game follow openly in the mold of heroes of decades past.
And if the best thing that comes out of this tragedy is that we're reminded of where those lines should be drawn, then I can't see that as a bad thing.
S.
Sorry. But thousands (or millions) of people go to see these pictures with nothing worse coming from it than a bit of entertainment. These people are cognizant of the difference between fantasy and reality.
You CANNOT make predictions about a nebulous mentally ill person.
You CANNOT plan for the actions of nebulous mentally ill persons.
Blaming it on the director, or the genre is disingenuous, and isn't understanding the fact that we're talking about someone whose gears aren't all spinning in the same direction.
Someone who is ill enough that they couldn't differentiate fantasy and reality.
Or someone ill enough that they just didn't care.
And with the news now asking "How can theaters keep their patrons safe?"
They can't. Plain and simple.
If some whack-job takes it into his head to kill people, people are going to get killed. In private, in public. The only way to avoid that is to barricade yourself into a concrete bunker and live the rest of your days out there.
There isn't any sort of protection possible against random nutcases. That's why we call them RANDOM nutcases. You simply can't plan for that sort of thing.
And I refuse to live in a panopticon while someone tries to figure out a way.
As to calls to have this person put down. While they're not an animal, the old "mad dog" analogy still holds true.
If he's put in prison, he'll simply be killed by other inmates unless he's permanently remanded to solitary confinement. These are people looking for any and all ways to feel in control of their situation (as much as they're allowed to). And NOBODY trusts a mad dog for no reason.
And if he's remanded to state psychiatric facilities, what then? After killing 12-ish people and wounding more, he's never getting out. I don't care HOW "cured" anyone declares him. So he what? Sits in a psych facility, "cured" for the rest of his natural life? -
Okay, I wouldn't use a full set of Lockdown in Choking Cloud. It's fairly endurance-intensive and Lockdown's end-redux is merely "okay".
I'd actually swap the ATIO set in there (and when you get the converters, change them over to Superior...but do it all at once so you don't lose set bonuses).
I went with Stupefy in Flashfire. The proc will occasionally toss a few enemies around, but it doesn't happen often enough to worry about.
Swap slotting on Cinders and EM Pulse. Cinders will be up MUCH more often. So you'll get many more chances at the proc there.
If you're teaming you REALLY don't want to slot Bonfire for KB. Slot it for damage and toss in the Overwhelming Force KB->KD proc.
Radiant Aura: If you're not 6-slotting it, go with Doctored Wounds for the recharge set bonus.
Lingering Radiation: Just put some endurance redux and an Acc in there.
Fire Imps: You can get the same defense bonus and a recharge bonus from Expedient Reinforcement.
You've completely ignored Hot Feet.
Yes, it does piddly damage. You're a Fire/Rad! If you were to monitor your damage output, you'd see that, in combat, Hot Feet accounts for a significant chunk of your damage.
Radiation Infection and Smoke are ridiculously overslotted.
Fallout, a very VERY situational power, is 6-slotted. For debuff...
If you're going to slot Fallout, slot it for DAMAGE.
Indomitable Will is overslotted.
Just, in general, you're slotting up as if you were going to be a ranged blaster. With your power selections, that's not going to work too well. And if they close on you, you're relying on a Hold-slotted Char, a Stun-slotted Flashfire, and your imps for damage (see "Attack an iceberg with a sewing needle").
Not saying my build is perfect (it ain't), but here it is for basic comparison.

Quote:You're not understanding. The fusion reaction won't survive contact with the walls of the containment vessel for more than a few seconds. Nowhere near enough time to "eat through". The snuffing of the fusion reaction is almost instantaneous. Yeah, there's going to be some radiation from the event. But you don't go lacing a containment vessel with fission-reaction products. If the containment breaks down, it seems to me that there's a potential for the energy particles given off by the fusion reaction to cause a fission reaction to occur. As I recall, isn't that the basic premise behind some nuclear bombs?
Okay, thermonuclear weapons (hydrogen bombs) actually use fusion in a multi-stage design. It's a huge rube-goldberg process.
You have two smaller fission devices compressing a fusion core to generate large amounts of fast neutrons to induce fission into fuel materials that aren't normally prone to induced fission (like depleted uranium).
So you're not using the fusion reaction to "blow up" anything. It's merely to generate appropriate levels of heat and neutron radiation to allow a specific type of fission to happen, increasing the efficiency of the bomb.
A hydrogen bomb is basically a fission-fusion-fission reaction.
Sure, if you're getting a small amount of radiation off a fusion reaction.
Sure, this radiation might induce VERY small-scale fissile reactions within containment. But nothing even close to what it'd take to induce a critical/super-critical reaction. Mainly you're just going get a short, high-intensity burst of radiation as the fusion reaction snuffs itself.
And, in a nuclear device meant to generate power, you're going to be building it almost completely differently than you would a bomb. As you're not attempting to induce criticality/supercriticality, and as I said earlier, you wouldn't be lacing the containment vessel with fission-reaction products.
Venture's anecdote about "put a bomb inside the reactor" is pretty much correct. -
Quote:What if it's actually a stabilising containment device that the reaction is started within, and then the containment breaks down and the reaction expands violently for a bit before the instability causes it to fall apart?
Thing is, fusion reactions don't work that way.
Disrupting a fusion reaction doesn't cause it to "expand".
Disrupting a fusion reaction causes the reaction to collapse (means things stop fusing). You're not protecting the world from a fusion reaction. You're protecting the fusion reaction from exterior contamination. And if the reaction hits the walls of the containment vessel? You get the introduction of heavier elements which in the containment vessel walls that kills the process.
This is one of the reasons why Fusion is such a power-intensive process (and achieving break-even is so hard). A good chunk of the power budget in't even caught up in ignition. It's in containment. Making sure the reaction is properly buffered so it doesn't even come in contact with the containment vessel itself. -
Think S.T.A.R. Labs.
They're essentially a private think-tank with government contracts. -

Man. These are some groaners. Lemme talia.

Quote:Actually, there's a whole class of sub-kiloton nukes that are QUITE man-portable.Normal nukes are not quite that small and are typically not very portable short of a bomber or missile or easy to create.
Granted, this thing was roughly the size of a Toyota IQ with a yield of 50-ish megatons.
The Castle Bravo device (largest detonation ever by the US) was 15 megatons and the device wasn't much larger. It was about 5 feet by 15 feet.
Tack on 65 years of technological advancement (and the fact it was originally intended to be an ultra-compact nuclear POWER device) and 4-foot spherical bomb is somewhat believable, even if the yield is kinda waaaaay out there.
On the flip side though.
This was supposed to be a nuclear FUSION device.
This argument comes up in BattleTech all the time.
Fusion devices don't go "boom".
When a fusion reactor breaks down, the reaction stops.
Granted, it's "sexier" if a mech goes up in a pillar of fire.
Hence the "Stackpole rule" (due to Mike Stackpole's penchant for having this happen rather frequently in his novels). -
Quote:Were I you, honestly, I'd actually PERSONALLY think my boss for the rollback in hours.I go the same theater as well heck I saw the avengers there the first Friday night. I too was planning on going but did not had the funds to do so. I was mad that my hours are being cut at work till I heard about this.
On a personal and professional level, it sucks.
But in this case, suckage has possibly kept you alive.
And who knows? It might just humanize and ingratiate you to your boss enough that he tosses some extra hours on your schedule... -
-
In that case, I'd probably go i7 for the greater multithreading, and get whatever you'd like (and can afford) as a graphics card.
Start up a thread of your own for to ask for advice on the system to build.
This way we don't poison Father's guide thread any further.
Use this as your guide for specifics.

And yes some of us read it. So what? It's more fun to comment on the basic premise of bulletproof skin than the actuality.

They can already microwave the crap out of people already.
And they can bombard them with infrasound.
Also, a 500 Terawatt laser was recently fired at Lawrence Livermore. More power than the entire planet uses at any given instant in time. -
Being discussed in some of the other movie threads.
A couple people here apparently skipped the midnight showing for various reasons. -
Wow. Just figured out which movie TDKR reminds me of.
The World is Not Enough.
Not a 100% match of course. But the parallels are fairly obvious.
Bane: Reynard
Talia: Elektra King
Batman: Bond
Catwoman: Christmas Jones
Basic Plot: Weaponizing a Nuclear Reactor
The Dragon's Demise: Getting his chest blown out/through. -
-
Quote:Now I'm asking myself, did he shoot up the 2D or 3D showing? There were two midnight showings in two different theaters (though it appears there were bullets that went through the walls into the other showing too.) I would have been in the 2D one... so bizarre.
I can honestly say I'm now a little freaked out at the prospect of going to the movies. It's irrational, but damnit it's there, stupid anxiety. Gonna take a while to process this.
Only two?
Every theater at the Cinemark near me was doing TDKR 16 theaters with a mix of standard plus an IMAX. Never seen the parking in that place so crazy-full.
Maybe idiot-boy couldn't get a ticket and was just stupid and nerd-ragey.
