"Taunting then breaking LoS" method works, but as you have said, not every team likes this style of tanking, and not every map allows it. And everything else... Had it been a real team, half the aggro would be somewhere I don't want it, or so it seems to me.

That's one of the challenges of tanking. Keeping an eye on the aggro cap.

If you pull down 2 8-man mobs, yeah, someone's getting the "overflow".

Play conservatively at first. Then take a couple chances. Sooner or later you'll get a feel for just where your comfort zone is on enemies and how much is "too much".

One question, no condemnation. Did you PL this tank or did you run up the levels in a more controlled manner? Usually those who have a hard time with aggro controls are those who level very quickly. Picking up powers willy-nilly isn't conducive to learning how to use the power effectively when it's still relatively low powered. As such, with a full selection of powers, it can sometimes be very confusing to figure out what a good pattern of use is. In effect, too many choices.

    1: What is your budget?
    • How much would you LIKE to keep it under?
    • How much can you afford if a small bump in price made a major performance difference?
2: Are you comfortable building your own or looking for pre-built.

3: Any companies you'd prefer to do business with or prefer NOT to do business with?

4: Any hard and fast wants/needs? Stuff you just GOTTA have?

Answering these question should help provide a much better fit of computer for you than just "go buy a Dell" or "get these parts and you're good".

Learn? Seriously. The fact that you're complaining about it sounds like you have a case of scrapperlock. Zoom your POV out (you don't have to go max, but don't be first person or near zoomed). Watch the mobs. Any start getting away from you, select the straggler and taunt/attack them.

Why not? Tell your teammates, flat out, that you're still raw with tanking. They can then make allowances so they don't lean so heavily on you. I've taken a highly substandard tank against Lord Recluse on a Master run. With support I was able to hold my own for a while.

Since then, I've gotten better. My build has gotten better. And while I'm no massive engine of destruction, it's not what I'm there to do. I'm there shaking hands with the badguys faces. My TEAM is the one bringing the pain.

Having a tank seemed such a good idea, but it seems that the only way I can melee is scrapperlock, I need some distance between me and the baddies to have any sort of situational awareness...
Again, pull your camera POV back some. And try to concentrate on seeing how many badguys you can keep around you, rather than how fast you can fling out attacks. Note: Your build MIGHT need some work for this. But you're Shields. It shouldn't be too expensive.

This will take a bit of time. Let it. Not everyone "clicks" with every AT from the get-go.

I mean, look at me. I have a similar problem. My blaster builds are all blappers. Even my defender and controller builds are blapper-ish. I've tried playing Masterminds. Standing back and buff-botting my pets drives me bonkers. So I don't play Masterminds

    Same here.

I didn't make a butt-ton. But I was leveling a bunch of lowbies. I did take my namesake for a single Nemesis farm (was at work and getting pestered periodically, so I needed something I could let just sit for a few minutes here and there). Took two friends who were idling so they could grab a couple easy levels and finished up in about an hour of play (closer to two due to interruptions). Heck there were a couple times where I walked away in the middle of combat without any problems.

I came out with about 11 million in inf and drops worth about 2x that.
One friend went in 27 and came out 29-1/2. The other went in 3 and came out 19-1/2.
  5. This video states my opinions on this quite well.

Okay, let's look at Everquest for a second. It's been going 11+ years now. They just released an update back in December.

And this is ALONG SIDE of EQ2 whch is roughly the same age as CoH.

Sorry to disappoint you, but this game still has a lot of room to strech it's legs yet.

Doing it simply because a subjective "this other game I played looks better" has to be up there in the 99th percentile of idea dumbness.
  7. Here's what I've got so far.

    Dreadful Gun Bunny: Kin/DP Corruptor
    Aggressive Diplomacy: Rad/DP Defender
    John Woo Hoo: DP/Elec Blaster
    Storm Caliber: Storm/DP Corruptor
    Manstopper: Emp/DP Defender
    Agent Ebony: DP/Energy Blaster

I could wear spandex. But the term "Spandex. Privilege, not a right." DEFINITELY applies here. I could see a rash of blindness happening if I did.

I could run around punching people. However that opens me up to reprisals. Like an ***whupping of my own, getting shot, getting arrested, getting sued, etc.

And I can fly. Seriously! I can! I can always do it. Once. Just straight down...

Well, maybe twice. Does bouncing count?

    Niiice!
  10. Okay, no purples , but I spent most of my time playing lowbies .

Two pistol defenders. One Rad/ one Emp/. The Rad is now at 20, and the emp is (without looking) 22-23.

Had an SOA that I created about this time last year, got him to level 8 and then left him. Lowbie SOA are painful sometimes... Anyhow, it's now sitting at L27 (snuck the last level onto them right as DXP ended) and the mid-level respec as a Bane. Head-squishing Mace-y goodness!

Got to play overnight while I was at work and farmed up a bit of Inf on Hyperstrike (and helped a couple friends add a few levels to their toons).

Then yesterday, took my FF/Arch defender to 50 while breaking a foot off in Rommy.

I even tagged another level onto my Ill/Cold Controller.

All in all, lots of fun to be had. Hope the people I helped level had fun. And I'd like to put out a big thanks to the people who let my lowbies tag along and contribute.
  11. Okay, have a couple of pistol 'fenders (Rad/DP, Emp/DP) up into their 20's from get-go.
Have a SoA that I created about a year ago, got up to 9, then left because it was actually painful to play in those lower levels. Was able to get him to his mid-level respec and went Bane. Became a completely different animal at that point and is now QUITE fun to play.

Stacked two more levels on my FF/Archery defender (now a level and a half from 50).

Then, to make a bit of coin, fished out a Nemesis Automaton mission on my main and ran it x8. Took several hours (playing at work and had to stop frequently (sometimes even in combat) to take care of stuff here at the office). Took a couple friends in to get them a few levels and some inf. They wanted to just bail when they got too sleepy. I told them it was OK and AFK farmed them. One friend got about 2.9 levels and the other went from 3 to someplace in the high teens.

Only one sour note out of all of it. Right before I went to do the Nemesis farm, I tried going back to one of my defenders. We lost a tank and picked up an overzealous scrapper who had no communications skills (basically not watching to see if the rest of us were ready and charging a bunch of +3 bosses). 6 Blasters, 1 scrapper, and 1 defender on the Argot'BurWot mission.

After nearly TPK'ing twice, and being unable to heal consistently due to getting the crap mezzed out of me and being killed the scrapper gets irate and:

DonkeyHeadCovering: Would it kill you to heal us?
Me: Well, considering I spent most of my time mezzed, it kinda...did.

He continued on in that vein, so I made my apologies to the team captain and took my leave.

    ADDITION!

Got my bubbler to L50 whilst breaking a foot off in Romulus' nethers.
Tacked another level onto my Ill/Cold
And working towards L27 for my SOA.

Think "Nictus swarms" or "Council snipers" or "DE Swarm swarms"

Granted, these are corner-cases. Still, one should be mindful that there are a couple situations where -recharge can absolutely wreck you. Moreover, having it up again pretty much at will is never a Bad Thing<TM>

If you're running this revision of drivers, it's recommended that you uninstall and roll back to the previous version of the drivers.

Actually it's worse than that. The effect is multiplicative.

    Code:
           Base 10 / Binary
    KB 1000 / 0.9765625
    MB 1000000 / 0.95367431640625
    GB 1000000000 / 0.93132257461548
    TB 1000000000000 / 0.90949470177293
    PB 1000000000000000 / 0.88817841970013
    EB 1000000000000000000 / 0.8673617379884
So by the time you hit petabytes, you're "losing" 11% to this rounding convention.

  21. Okay, first off, I'm not selling anything, endorsing anything, getting kickbacks from anything, or anything else. This is just me getting around a screwed up situation I had no part in making. If this helps someone, great. If not, well, I like to hear myself tal...err...type.

Background: Late last year, my landlord shot out a notice that they would be transitioning my building off Comcast as a cable provider to some place called Suite Solutions. Now my service with Comcast had been pretty fricking good. So I wasn't happy about this. I did some digging on the new provider and was...less than enthused about this change.

My landlord told me that the changeover was happening, no appeals. No changes. Nada. It was either switch over or be disconnected.

The problem was, they sorta failed to...welll...NOTIFY COMCAST.

Cue a 6 month reprieve while lawyers got richer.

Anyhoo, the other shoe dropped at the end of last month when the landlord apparently won in court. Comcast could still provide, but they'd have to put in their own parallel wiring system. As of March 1, I was disconnected and the local Comcast office couldn't provide me with a date for when/if wiring would be laid. The national support number was even worse. Totally and utterly clueless, though with as many markets as they occupy, I can't really blame some wage slave on the other end of the phone.

I'd tried AT&T in the past. I'll just say I was less than thrilled and leave it there. Ma Bell would NOT get another penny from me. And DSL from any other provider would be coming across lines leased from AT&T. And worse, they'd be lines AT&T wouldn't mind losing (aka bad/shoddy lines). I have relatives working in my area who deal with DSL provisioning. So I'm aware of the practices.

Satellite? Can't do it. I'm not allowed to mount an antenna on the building and don't have a balcony to simply place an antenna on.

Tether to my phone? No. I've tried such connections. They're better than dialup or IP over smoke signal. But for gaming? They can be hit-or-miss.

So my other option is one I'd kinda dismissed out of hand a while back. Clear (Clearwire). 4G WiMax (Cellular wireless, 4th Gen). $30/month for the 1MB service. $40/month for the 6GB service.

As my other options were somewhat...limited, I have opted to take a chance on the Clearwire connection.

    Day 1:

A quick trip to my local Frys and I was set up with a modem and an account. $118 out the door (lease a modem, are you NUTS?)

Basically when you leave the store, you're already set to connect. No waiting on connection, you're good to hook up when you get home.

I went in and disconnected my now useless cablemodem and replaced it with the Clear modem (Got the 2nd Generation "G" series modem. Apparently the 1st Gen ones are a bit...directional, which can cause problems depending on where you're putting the device.)

I'm getting 2-3 lights (analogous to bars on a phone) most of the time. The manual recommends a minimum of 2 bars.

I rebooted my router and my workstation and boom. Up online.

I played last night with only one nasty random disconnect (wasn't doing anything, just standing in my base gabbing and mapserved). The rest of the time the connection was rock-solid. I even made it through a Rikti invasion on Freedom. Something my cable connection sometimes had a hard time doing.

Ran a couple speedtests. Between 2.5 and 3.5 Mbits down (depending on test server) and over .5 Mbits up on every server I tried. Ping times are in the 80-90ms range, which is just fine. The T1 I'm abusing right now is pulling 35-45ms for the same site at a slightly less-busy time of day.

About the only thing that threw me was one little piece of sub-optimal routing. I tried tracing back to CoH.com. My ISP's peering point is out on the West coast and hops around 8 times in that area before traveling all the way across the country to Maryland and then back to Arizona before disappearing into the Limelight (llnw) network. I don't often see these kinds of "out and back" traversals anymore. Maybe I'm just spoiled...

Worst I ever saw was a 35 hop run that crossed the country 15 times before hitting the other endpoint that was 3 miles from me.

Had one person horror-story me a bit about what might happen. But my first impression has, thus far, been excellent. They did admit that with Chicago being one of their latest rollouts, the amount of deal-breaker problems they encountered was far lower. It also probably helps that Chicago is relatively flat with a massive infrastructure already built up for this sort of thing.

One other nifty thing. If I travel to another location that has coverage, I should be able to take the modem (technically a gateway device) with me and have Internet. Unfortunately, the two cities I visit most frequenty don't have coverage yet, but I can hope!

Note: I didn't opt for the mobile broadband in addition to the home service. I don't travel enough to make

Anyone else had any experiences with Clear they want to share? Good? Bad? Indifferent?

While I upgraded both my laptop and my workstation during this time, and CoH WAS an impetus, it wasn't the only one.

So the cost of the game alone is about $550 for me. That comes out to about $17/month. I spend more than this in fast food. My additional withholdings on income tax exceed this. This is the equivalent of 1-2 movies by me (depending on if I see it in IMAX or not).

So something that's been going on for YEARS is why the market is messed up?

No. No, I don't think so.

The subject here is COMMON IOs.

I use this vendoring trick to "nest egg" lowbies. I use it as a "fire and forget", rather than an agressive manner (and I'd make more if I were). As such, most of my lowbies have between 20 and 50 million by the time they hit 20 or so.

At that point, I move on to more profitable niches.

And, in all the time I've been doing it, I have yet to drain the supply.

Were he talking set IOs, I'd be in agreement.

If your argument is "But I'd get it cheaper if you guys let that stuff build up and didn't do this". My reply is "well yeah, but this is not a store".

If you want cheap commons, plan ahead. Use the same strategies the vendor-runners do, bid low and wait. It's quite nearly zero effort. And if you bid stacks and only keep one? Well, the IO pretty much paid for itself at that point.
