  1. Okay first off. Celeron. Okay for desktop productivity. Not so great for gaming. The amount of L2 cache is less than a quarter of what you'd find on a dual-core C2D or i5. This means that the system is going to be falling back to system memory (RAM) of which you're already using a half just to keep your OS going, and then disk (which is several orders of magnitude slower than system memory).

This means that the CPU gets to spend a lot of times figuratively twiddling it's thumbs.

Second, the 9400. This is the lower-end cards of nVidia's 9*** series.

Praetoria is optimized for Ultra Mode and not all the measures taken to make sure it "degrades" gracefully at lower settings insure that you are going to gain performance back.

Also, I notice a couple performance suckers still active. Anisotropic filtering is still up fairly high (4x), shadows are still on (albeit stencil), and your particle effects are still set to high (50K).

You MAY benefit a little from upgrading your drivers (you can get the current 258.96 drivers). But I don't expect spectacular results from them.

About the only other thing I could recommend would be to start turning other things off (Chrome, Skype, etc).

There are other strange graphical glitches too, but those occur in all areas, and go away when I move the graphics slider back and forth.

The Praetoria problem, though doesn't go away. At first I thought it was just because of all the people trying out Praetoria, but no one else is having lag troubles at the same time as I am.

Can you provide us with the necessary CoH Helper and Hijack This logs?

See the "Asking for help" link in my sig if you're unsure how to do this.

The critters in the trial drop nothing. No XP, inf, recipes, salvage, inspies, NADA.

Someone was saying that an all-nuke run happened on Pinnacle. If that's what's REQUIRED for this, it needs refactoring.

Maybe next time we can bring a slightly more debuff-heavy group with. Lord knows WE got debuffed enough!

Like the group over on Freedom, this is a "come as you are" event. If you wanna show up with a brand-spankin' new Fire/Rad, you can. Realistically though, if you're in TF range (10+) it's easier for everyone (and more rewarding).

Also, if you have access to the Tiki Lounge in Pocket D, go check out Trina's new costume. I don't think we need to say who designed it.
  7. Hey there! Welcome!

Okay, as you've noticed, there's not a humongous difference in the classes at extremely low levels.

The low levels are basically to get you used to playing in your AT and learning basic tactics and skills for overcoming obstacles in the game.

Once you hit your teens, your powers will mature a bit. You'll have more slots to play with and can start diversifying your abilities a bit. Just before you hit your teens, you graduate from Training Origin enhancements to Dual Origin enhancements (1 DO grants the same boost as 2 TOs).

Once into the 20's, your core powers (and some important ancillary powers) start to arrive. Early on, you also gain access to Single Origin Enhancers (1 SO = 2 TOs) and your performance really starts to take off.

Up into your 30's you secondary powers start filling in the gaps and you begin playing a lot more like you should for the rest of the game. Slots become quite plentiful and you've got the ability to start slotting higher level IOs that, even with the multi-aspect versions, provide greater return than just single aspect Single Origin enhancers.

Once into your 40's, you start rounding out your powers and filling in little gaps here and there. Early on you gain access to your Patron Pool/Epic Pool and you get to play around with some powers that are normally outside the purview of your traditional AT roles or are extremely useful additives to it.

Just be patient. Take your time. And DON'T rush yourself to 50. You'll thank yourself later, and be a much better player because of it.

  9. Yup. All the servers are going down for maintenance. So, likely, they have the patch for the online store ready.

If you continue getting BSODs and the like, you may have something else going on too. If it continues, post copies of your CoH Helper and Hijack This logs.

To see how, follow the "Asking for help" link in my sig.

Not to be a pedantic Richard, but here I go.

Define "avoidable" in correctly applicable terms as it applies to NCSoft/Paragon's City of Heroes service setup. Include the appropriate action plans and budgets necessary to achieve your objective as well as the full estimates of raw labor and programming necessary to make it happen, as well as a full hardware list.

I just don't see how this slipped by the development or net opps teams.
Who says the online store is overloaded?

What if there was some goofy, obscure code error in there someplace that was causing the server to run amok, eat money, and poop in everyone's left shoe (unless it was an Air Jordan)?

There HAVE been several EXTENSIVE maintenances on ALL of the servers in the past few weeks in prep for this. Unfortunately, Uncle Murphy is law unto himself.

    So cut them some slack.

    Does it suck? Sure!
    Will it be fixed? Sure!
Was this intentional or through malfeasance or laziness? HELL NO!

    What OS are you on?

If Vista/Win7, are you running by just double-clicking on the link or doing "run as administrator"?

If you're not doing the latter, please do so.

Also, were you in beta at all? If so, you can just copy the piggs folder from beta and wipe out the checksum file.

I ran into this last night too. I'd already gotten the pre-download, and it choked on one pigg and went into telling me that it was going to be FOUR HOURS to fix.

I then did the "copy from beta folder" trick and was up in 30 minutes.

It seems to happen to me every issue.

I'll even provide the base if people need it. It's already set up for a CoP run.

I am afraid. Very afraid. But once they are done and I get my games installed things will be better, right? right???

    Kudos on the new computer.
    Meh on going wireless everything...

Don't get me wrong. Wireless is very nice and handy and a good thing to have...as a backup. But my internal network isn't wired gigabit for nothing.

  20. So, you're essentially saying that this is a slap in the face that's so "slap in the face'y" that it's a slap in the face to slaps in the faces?

What a slap in the face...

  21. Okay, I lied. A bit of jiggety-pokery with swapping out files from my beta folder and I'm up and running.

I'm in on Freedom right now.

    Waiting on the hill.

Honestly, thank you every for taking the time to help me out on this one. Time to go slug my way into the 20s so it will start getting better.
    You get punch sooner.
You can slot up punch sooner.

Yeah, Haymaker is nicer. But it's also slower (twice the recharge time and 25% longer animation) and costs more (~50% higher end cost) . As such, your kill speed won't increase appreciably.

You can punch roughly twice for every single Haymaker and do more damage.

If you think holding to that right now is just exceptionally stupid, I don't think most people expect it to stay this way, and don't want to be screwed once it finally dies back down.
I look at it this way. On the Fun > Not Fun meter.

Play RIGHT FREAKIN' NAO > Wait 20-30 minutes to log in (if not more) and navel gaze.

And, once server load DOES go back down, HOW are they screwed?

They can still go to the server of their choice.
They can create a new character there.
They can transfer their current characters there.
  25. For the "I want to play on a high population server" and "The other servers are empty" crowds, please burn this image into your mind.

And note, it JUST turned 5PM Central. Imagine what it's going to be like later this evening.
