Honestly, not a clue. I know just enough about Macs to never use them for much more than a doorstop.

I will say this though. Since i19, the client has been SIGNIFICIANTLY less stable than it was in the past.

Prior to i19, 99+% of my crashes were from being on long periods of time, memory leaking, and then running face-first into the 1.5+ GB instability zone for 32-bit Windows apps.

Now, I can start up the client, stand there for 5 minutes not touching a thing and have the client spontaneously crash to desktop on me.

Good for you. Again, how the forums performed (and how they work now) FOR YOU is a function of how the forums are supposed to work + quirks on the server end + quirks on your end.

Hey, if these boards can be made to STOP DESTROYING MY POSTS, I wouldn't complain. At work, I have a "back" button on my mouse. More often than not, I'll accidentally squeeze that with my thumb when I attempt to use the mouse. A lot of times I'll open a new tab to look at a dictionary or do a google search, only to accidentally do that in the same tab I'm posting in (I've set Firefox to not select new tabs as I open them). I've had a few instances when Firefox actually crashed on me, too. And recently, I've had instances where hitting Submit sends me in 6-minute page load, followed by a blank page, forcing me to hit "Back" and resubmit, only to find my post no longer exists when I back up.
Again, a misconfigured proxy can cause this issue. Along with certain browser add-ins.

    Quote:
And again - how is this a problem with my ISP if this has been going on with this forum software from the day it was introduced, whereas I NEVER EVER had that with the old boards?
Your ISP and possible proxy servers they run react to different software

    wait for it...

    wait for it...

    DIFFERENTLY.

If the current board is using post tracking methodologies not transparent to a web proxy, or that run afoul of an add-in, you are going to get different behavior than the older board system.

Again, the fact that not everyone is having YOUR issues with YOUR level of severity and frequency points out the fact that YOUR issues are at least partially on YOUR end. Otherwise the user experience would be uniform for everyone.

Since this is NOT the case, and everyone is NOT having YOUR issues with YOUR level of severity and frequency.

Feel free to argue with Occam and his razor.

    "Never" huh?

On the old board I had timeouts that I couldn't back-button from (and thus, lost posts). And that was using Firefox. I don't use IE. Period.

As of right now we have dueling anecdotes. Huzzah!

    Quote:
The old forums did not "default" any of my text fields to anything at all. I'm not sure how they worked exactly, but I know that if I quoted someone, wrote text and accidentally hit one of my Firefox quick links, then returning to my post would see the text box written to where I'd gotten it to. This includes even instances where I've lost power to the building, and upon restoring my tabs, Firefox will also restore what I've written in the text fields. Because of how the new forums are set up, this does not happen if I quote, which is what I do most of the time.

The new forums are, in fact, VASTLY inferior for retaining posts than the old ones were.
So you're saying you lose posts when you purposefully (or accidentally) navigate away from the forums and that simply re-entering the URL doesn't restore what you typed.

I've been on multiple vBulletin systems that function this same way.

Is it different than how the old boards handled it? YES.

    Quote:
And they are completely incapable of tracking what I've read, whereas the old ones were almost always spot on.
Again, if your ISP is using a proxy and it isn't set up correctly, THIS IS EXPECTED BEHAVIOR. The board isn't dropping a massive number of tracking cookies onto your machine. Just a logon cookie and a timing cookie for the most part.

    Quote:
I have long since given up using the "take me to the latest post" function here because IT IS WORTHLESS. It has always been worthless, and it continues to be worthless now, to the point where I wonder why read posts are even tracked when that tracking is ALWAYS wrong. In fact, I can guarantee you that about half an hour after I make this post, the boards will insist it's a new post that I haven't read before, despite being MY OWN.
The boards DO have a new search cutoff. Usually it's a 10-20 minute window. I don't remember what the longest cutoff time I've seen on this board. This cuts down on server load by caching the last search for a specific amount of time. It makes it more inconvenient for heavy users. But you aren't directly footing the hardware and bandwidth bills for the board.

Again, I'm sorry that you're having such issues with the boards. And I acknowledge some of it may be tweaks made to the server software itself. But I still maintain that at least some of it are problems from your end.

All I can say is that your experience is NOT universal among users. As such, it's less likely that the problem is the forums themselves and more likely that it's either something on your end or on one of the hops directly in front of you. As has been noted, flaky proxy servers at your ISP can easily explain the bizarre behavior you're experiencing.

If that's the case, this has nothing to do with the forums.

At worst, you've got a nasty confluence of minor board issues being exacerbated by your own system/network issues.

    Quote:
Furthermore, the old forums were far less likely to destroy my posts if my page failed to load, apparently because quoting doesn't so much put text in a text field as load a page that assumes text in a text field. I've lost far too many posts for stupid reasons here it's not even funny.
Translation: The current board destroys posts on occasion. The old one did to, but you're supposedly noticing it more now. And you're frustrated enough that the rose-colored filter is now firmly in place on the old boards.

    Quote:
I mean, I don't know what the back end of the thing is, but I know that, as a user, my experience with the forums degraded SIGNIFICANTLY with the change, because both the features and the outlook of these forums simply don't work as well as those of the old forums. I don't know who or what is at fault here, but the reason I ask "why" is it seems the change has brought us nothing but trouble, with the possible exception embedding images now being allowed.

Again, while these issues are not unique to you, they're not happening to everyone. Please keep this firmly in mind.

As for people who're getting intermittent...transient errors of a similar flavor, please note that similar things happen on PBPBB, SMF, UBBThreads, and various other board software as well. I've run PHPBB and SMF for years. I see the same intermittent behavior (logffs, loss of posts, timeouts, etc) on these platforms as well.

Forums that at least can be maintained and upgraded. The old software was just a custom mess with no way forward.

The -1712 code problem came up while I had tried twice to start CoH after it crashed to desktop. The original crash was caused by some Bluetooth app that went nuts for some unknown reason. I don't have any Bluetooth stuff so I disabled the Bluetooth app in the top bar. Then I tried to start CoH. It didn't seem to start, so I tried again. Then I got the -1712 error, which apparently happens when you try to open CoH twice. So, that problem has not recurred.
This sounds like the app is crashing but not actually shutting down/closing.

Pop your Activity Monitor and see if you have a hung process in there.

If so, kill it and try re-launching again.

  10. Okay, as has been noted, your drivers are just a TEENSY SMIDGE out of date.

Latest version of the drivers that'll work with your card are the 260.99 (and yes that's a link to them).

However, some people have been having problems with the most recent version of the drivers. So if you do, here's links to a couple of the older versions going from newest to oldest. Note: I'm only going to include the WHQL-vetted drivers, not the betas.

    260.89
    258.96
    257.21
    197.45

Honestly, that's as far back as I'm gonna go, (and probably father back than you should have to roll back, since anything older than the 258 series gets CoH whinging about "out of date drivers" on the load screen).
  11. My first 50 was Hyperstrike. Took just under 3 months (not solid, 3 months of real world time, less in-game) to get to 50. Mostly because I played him constantly. He probably would have done better had a gotten a better handle on the content earlier. Most of his time was NOT spent in missions, but out street-sweeping.

    Never...
    Ever...
    Again...

Now, back when epics unlocked at 50, there was SOMETHING of a reason to race for 50. That and I wanted to have an alt that could participate in the high level stuff.

As such, Hyper paid a price. He bypassed a LOT of contacts. As such, there are zones he just does NOT have store contacts, etc in. And I missed out on a lot of chances to pound face in some seriously cool missions.

My stalker took longer. Partially because sometimes it was just too damn EASY to stealth missions. However, I had a lot more fun with her.

Right after that, I made a determined push to get my first villain, my corruptor, Domina up to 50.

My controller took about 8 months. Mostly because I put him down for a while post-40.

My warshade, Inion, from conception in August/November of 2008, just hit 50 after i19 hit. So about 2 years.

My Stone/Fire tank took about 8 months. Altitis.

My bubble defender took about a year and a half.

Hoping my SS/Inv brute The Man From BEATDOWN makes 50 sometime next month.

  16. Dear Kris,

I CAN call you Kris right?

I was very very good this year.

And, at the same time, very very evil. You could say I was very good at evil.

What I'd like for Christmas (and never mind that Jupiter-sized Annihilation Cannon pointed at the North Pole) are:

    One of these.

And maybe a couple of these.

And, just for grins, get me a copy of Acronis and maybe an upgrade for VMWare.

Oh wait. I just looked at my bank statement. You already got them for me.

Thanks! Maybe I'll let you live until next year after all!

    Ah.

Okay. Pretty much everyone here thought that you were talking the SATA data cables. THOSE are one-to-one.

The power cables, you can string pretty much as many devices as you have connectors for. Granted, if you're running a ton of 10,000 rpm drives you might want to consider a bit of load balancing...just in case. But usually there's exactly zero problem with daisy-chaining them on the power line.

    LOL!

I don't follow The Guild religiously. But I always love their stuff.
  19. Likely it's "Old Blue Eyes". They just reverted him to human for "a short period". So he'll probably be normal when the Annihilus bugs eat him.

Then, about a year down the road, one of them will crap out a pebble and we'll have The Thing back.

Two questions regarding "cable management" (I honestly could not get "google" to answer):

    1. With one Sata cable can I run both Hard drive and Dvd burner on same line? I know IDE, you should not.
No. Old IDE/ATAPI cables, you could string two devices. SATA is all one device per-cable.

    Quote:
    2. On a molex cable line, can I run three 120 mm fans safely. Or should I run two molex cables total (one with one and second with two?).

Thanks in advance. And I hope everyone has a great holiday!!
As long as you're not stringing other devices on the same power "branch" line, you should be okay.

Do people a favor. Give "the best" a rest.

Trying to balance against an upper-end outlier is a poor choice.

SS is a nice "plethora" set.

You get a nice powerful ST showing. You get a nice AoE showing. ANd you even get a decent ranged attack on top of that. You get a mix of stun/hold/KU/KB on top of damage.
