Quote:Yes it is capable of benefiting from SLI.A friend of mine is getting a new "Sandy rig" and regardless of CoX performance it will have SLI. I'm curious if the latest updates to City will allow any benefit for one of his favorite games. What evidence is there that CoX is or isn't capable of this technology?
Thanks in advance.
HOWEVER, the performance difference for CoH is relatively small between single and dual cards. You aren't really going to be cranking resolution much, but you'll be able to turn up some of your other effects without seeing as massive a performance hit.
Keep in mind that SLI (nVidia's Scalable Link Interface) didn't exist (save maybe as schematics and some firmware/software proofs) during the development phase of CoH. -
Quote:It's possible you haven't cached any new DNS info in a while and the system may be barfing after the old cache expired.I've posted this question to NC in multiple ways, but in trying to self resolve it fast. I can't access any part of cityofheroes.com from my PC, at all. I'm accessing the forums by cell phone on my home wifi right now. I've tried all my browsers (chrome, Firefox, IE) and checked everything that could block a single site (spybot, avast, peer guardian, superantispyware, malwarebytes, zone alarm) but none show a block on their logs. I can tracert and ping the site successfully. I tried accessing by going to the ip address of tge site but that failed too. So its not the network, the ISP, or the DNS.
My ISP is Comcast, but I could also access the site (poorly) via kproxy.. and my router has no blocked sites. Windows firewall is also off. Any ideas?
- Open up a command prompt (Start >> Run >> cmd)
- Type in "ipconfig /flushdns" (without the " ")
- Uninstall ZoneAlarm. I've seen more problems with ZA going haywire than I care to admit. ZA is, at best, an okay product WHEN IT WORKS. The rest of the time it's just one gigantic, resource-sucking nuisance. Revert back to the Windows Firewall.

Congratulations! You have properly executed a Wronski Feint!
Too bad Scirocco never read Harry Potter. -
Quote:One thing that can be done to offset the higher loads imposed by higher resolutions is to back down on FSAA and AF levels a bit. With higher resolutions, very high levels of FSAA/AF are less important (at least in CoH).1280x1024 ~> 1.3 million pixels
1920x1080 ~> 2 million pixels
Be prepared for about a 35% performance drop*
*It's not necessarily quite that simple. There's a lot of stuff happening in the background and the resolution you're displaying things at probably isn't the bottleneck in your performance. All other things being equal, however, a 35% drop is going to be the worst case scenario.
I will speak from my own experience, though...the hit I took going from a 1440x900 laptop display (just under 1.3 million pixels) to a 1080p TV screen (also 1920x1080) via HDMI cable, displaying, with both screens open but CoH only running on the TV, was rather substantial - I went from about 30FPS to 20, which would be consistent with the 35% estimate.
Don't turn them OFF of course, but if you're running 8x FSAA ad 8x AF right now, back down to 4 and 4. I'd be very surprised if you noticed a difference. -

Quote:Hate voice chat in MMORPGs for various reasons, chief among them being the total blowing of immersion
Yeah, nothing quite blows immersion like a Dr. Girlfriend voice on that dainty elf maiden, while the aged priest is warbling like an adolescent boy and swearing like a trucker, while the Paladin is getting over a cold and sounds like he's not only hacking up both lungs, but most of his other internal organs too.
Meanwhile, the guy who types clear, concise, perfectly understandable sentences in the chat window has an accent so thick you need a monowire to cut it, and just forget UNDERSTANDING it.
Not to mention all the background noise (yup, that's mom beating on dad with a frying pan) and the like. -
Quote:Which was why I said single card board as I only using a Single graphics card. does memory 1 GB mean anything, I noticed the 6950 was 2 Gb and most of the GTX560 Ti I seen is 1Gb
More memory is important for things like anti-aliasing, filtering, etc. Essentially what's happening is a combination of multiple-pass renderings of the screen, renders at higher resolutions that are then reduced to your resolution, and a bunch of other things going on. Each of these screen renders that you never actually see require space in the card's memory. More memory means that, if the GPU can keep up with the work load, there'll be enough memory there to support it.
That's part of the problem with the 560 right now. It seems to be an issue of the GPU is quite powerful, but is being held back by the limited amount of memory. -
One piece of nastiness with the Step-Up process.
There is NO cross-shipping.
So if it's the only card in your system, you essentially have to take your system offline for a week or more (unless you're paying through the nose for expidited shipping). -
Quote:Ok, so I have to run really good single cards is what you are saying I can understand that. So with that in mind I can run any single graphics card I want either ATI or Nvidia, but if i want to run two graphics cards at once I will have to use ATI and they will only run at 4x correct?
Anyone know what the Nvidia equivlent to the ATI Radeon HD6950 is?
No what he's trying to say is that, due to the way the board is constructed, you get lousy SLI/Crossfire performance. PERIOD. The more powerful your cards are, the worse the situation becomes. Quite simply, the cards are capable of pushing huge quantities of data back and forth and are being "choked" by the x4 PCI-slot because the slot itself isn't able to handle that level of throughput.
As to the nVidia equivalent. There's no direct equivalent. Close would be the GTX570 or the new GTX560 Ti. However, the 6950 may or may not outperform the 560 and the 570 is in a much higher price bracket. -
Shipped it back and got the real deal.
Not worried about power. I've been over-spec'ing my PSUs for years. Had a nasty case a while back where the PSUs in some machines I'd ordered for a client were just BARELY adequate for power delivery and they worked themselves to death in short order.Quote:Doesn't matter, the GTX 560 Ti (someone really needs to beat nVidia's marketing department about the head and shoulders, confusing your customers with suffixes isn't a viable marketing strategy) is a really nice card.
Faster than a GTX 470 but with lower power requirements and is whisper quiet with it's reference cooler. Roughly 30% faster than a stock clock GTX 460 1GB, roughly 50% faster than a stock clock GTX 460 SE at 1920x1200 with AA (across a cross-section of games). Uses about 30 watts more 12 volt power over the GTX 460.
Due to the cooler design it vents the hot air into the case so good air circulation in the case is a must.
Agreed about the silly naming conventions.
And not worried about case cooling. I still have several 120mm fan spots available to me if need be. -
Quote:This thread has got me thinking. MMO's draw a pretty diverse crowd (It's that first "M"), and I am now wondering how many people could not care less about leveling and actually playing the game, but instead use it as a way to just chat with folks? Just something that made me go hmmmm.
While I don't pretend not to be rather anal about advancement, honestly, I play this game to socialize. I can solo when I need to. But I like teaming.
And I don't Vent/Skype/etc. I'm an old IRC'er from way (WAY WAY) back. Running on teams where just about everyone is gabbing away on vent and ignore chat drives me up the walls. -
I basically never wasted my money on Wizard. I bought comics to read. Not as some goofy "investment".
I got to see first-hand what the build-up of and subsequent implosion of the "investment/collectible market" did to the comics industry as a whole.
Yes, Wizard has tried over the last 20 years to be more than "just" a price guide. So they probably deserve SOME kudos. But I'm a curmudgeonly sort who has vast problems with forgiveness, and a problem with forgetting things like this that dwarfs my inability to forgive by several orders of magnitude. -
Okay, as people know, I recently bought a GTX460.
Well, the GTX560 Ti has come out now.
Oh yeah, and I bought EVGA, so the Step-Up program will make it cost me a whopping $40.
Would I? Should I? Could I? -
Quote:Yes, this is exactly what I meant, but you can only choose one of them. If you're going Perma, you're going to get more "mileage" out of Hasten that way.Hasten and AM are not toggle powers. By "non-auto" do you mean powers that you can shift-click to force to auto fire?
No, understood. You have your POV on how you want to look at it, I have mine. It's not your fault you're wrong.Quote:[P.S. I want to add that I'm not trying to grill you personally. I'm actually relieved to come back to CoH and find a complex system worth arguing about after spending a weekend... in that other place with 6 powersets and 3 color selections.]
Seriously though, yeah, I'm being anal about the "in a vacuum" sustainability. I just tend to be REAL big on self maintenance. Probably just an unhealthy outgrowth of my inherent laziness. -
Quote:Never mind that we're already talking about levels of IO absurdity that make perma-hasten a given, even single-slotted.It also doesn't do anything if you don't have powers that are recharging.
Like I said.Quote:I'm sorry, but I have no idea what you are talking about.
I'm saying for the purposes of how much recharge one can get that you not factor in non-auto/toggle powers[/quote]
Quote:I kind of feel that double stacking Siphon Speed happens a bit more often than Jupiter aligning with Mars during the age of Aquarius. I'm not married to the argument, or even playing any of these builds, but you seem to be arguing that an average Kinetics user is not OCD enough to cast this power once every 30 seconds. Having watched them farm, I disagree.
Once every 30 seconds is the same as Drain Psyche. Would you argue that Drain Psyche users don't have considerably higher endurance recovery and regen than other characters?
Still missing the part about "sustainable in a vacuum".
Why not just start talking about getting two teams of */rads and two teams of */kins together and talking about how much recharge they can do unto one another?
That's how I classify powers requiring user/enemy interaction (outside of a power with no enemy interaction required, set to auto-fire). -
Quote:You're missing my point. The +20% recharge from one cast of Siphon is identical to the passives. Whatever else is going on, a Kin who isn't hitting at least the same recharge levels that a Super Reflex user is is playing with one hand tied behind his or her back. They can easily match the SR, and surpass them if they wish.
The recharge from Siphon is NOT self-sustaining. You have to keep spamming it to keep it going. Also, it does not work if you have no enemies.
Missed the part about toggles eh?Quote:Secondly, if we eliminate all non-passives, then we have to rule out Hasten.
AM would be arguable, but if you've already got an auto-toggle on Hasten, no.Quote:If Hasten is in, then so is AM. If AM is in, why is Siphon not?
Siphon isn't, for the reasons I listed above.
This is what I'm talking about. You can stand there. In a location with no enemies, and CONSTANTLY be at ###.##% of recharge.
Anything else is subject to the vagaries of user error. And I don't feel like arguing "If I catch everything, the wind's blowing in the right direction, and all the proper stars are aligned I'm at ###.##%" -
-
Quote:I'm not saying don't use it. I'm saying for the purposes of how much recharge one can get that you not factor in non-auto/toggle powers because the recharge rate isn't a guaranteed constant, due to it requiring continual monitoring by a highly fallible control device made of meat.I'm pretty sure triple stacked siphon is the standard for hardcore farming Fire/Kins. It's definitely doable. Siphon's cast time is only 1.93 seconds, so it's not that different from making sure to, say, throw an Ice Bolt every so often. Or, on an Empath, cast Fortitude on a new person each time it comes up. It would drive ME insane, but some people seem to do it.
-
Well, just an FYI. Quote pyramids stop at 27 levels and toss any quotes longer than that.
How do I know?
.... -
-
Quote:Which is why I'd look at maximum "self sustaining", as in "requires no user activity/intervention".I'm fairly confident that if we include bonus Recharge from powers that nothing can beat Kinetics. I don't see how any set could get to the +60% Kinetics gets from triple stacking Siphon Speed. So in a contest of sheer numbers its pretty much Kinetics or bust. (Of course, Siphon Speed can miss, but even given that you're probably still looking at a very reliable +40%.)
Because triple and quad-stacked Siphons are great and all. But if all you're doing is spamming Siphon to maintain that recharge level, it's pretty much useless. -

Quote:I love you guys.
And no, I don't think this is advertising. If, say, Neil Gaiman suddenly started playing CoH, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have to delete all the threads that pertain to his writing.
Mr_Ultimate - Bless your heart. You are hereby made an official member of Twilight Guardian's Midnight Squad (check here for further info).
And if any of you either can't wait until tomorrow to buy it, or aren't sure if you want to without a "taste," you can check out the first five pages here.
Y'know, it occurs to me that I'll be competing with the death of SPOILER in the Fantastic Four...
Everybody dies.
Not everybody really comes back (unless you're in a comic book). -
Quote:I was looking for a guide to raids and came across this 2009 post. Sounds interesting, but misleading in that getting HVAS/Shivans, 3 WB Rockets, and EoEs for everyone takes significantly longer to prepare for the raid.
Curious, though, if it works or has been used to any effect lately. Or has it been more refined?
This still works. Unlike CoP, where the devs ham-handed it to just make nukes not work, the advent of shard drops means that people actually have incentive to fight through the blooms now.
I was on a raid 2 weeks ago on Freedom where I picked up 12 shards just from mito defeats! RNG was LOVING me that evening. -
Quote:The only problem is you're not taking into account the number of slots required.5 x 10% from purples = 50
5 x 7.5% from LotGs = 37.5
5 x 7.5% = 37.5
5 x 6.25% = 32.5
5 x 5% = 25
5 x 3.75% = 17.25
5 x 2.5% = 12.5

212.25% from enhancement bonuses

Then there's special powers like lightning reflexes etc and then also the bonuses to individual powers from enhancements.
Now the LOTGs are single-slot.
But the purples require 5 slots. As do most, if not all the 6.25 and 5% recharges.
